I Don't Know What Pajiba Is, But He's Got It

The Daily Trade Round-Up / The TV Whore
Mar. 5, 2008

Well balls, man. Next week is the end of “The Wire.” And HBO pulled a fast one on those of us who’ve been watching the show OnDemand, by not putting the last episode up early. Despite all the bloody OnDemand promos telling us we could watch every episode early. So if you’ve been looking for it, you’re not going crazy — it ain’t there. We’re all gonna have tune in Sunday night together to find out the final what-what (and god damn has it ratcheted up into all kinds of amazing and exhilarating and depressing the last few weeks — gonna be a helluva last hour-and-a-half).

While “The Wire” is leaving us, turns out that “Scrubs” may not be, as last week we saw a flurry of reports about another “final” season of “Scrubs” next year, only not on NBC. Even though the show airs on NBC, it’s produced by ABC Studios, which is one of the reasons the Peacock has never treated the show terribly well, because a hunka-chunka any money the show makes goes into the pocket of NBC’s competitor. Well despite this original plan for this year to be show’s final hurrah, NBC is reportedly in slow negotiations for one more season. The show’s producers are interested in this since this season’s episode count went from 18 to 12, thanks to the strike, and they’d like a chance to finish. Anyway, the big news last week was that ABC has jumped in and is trying to put a deal together for the show’s final season, snatching it out of NBC’s sweaty little hands. But this could turn ugly, because NBC says it still holds the legal rights to the show, and unless it drops out of negotiations for next season, ABC can’t pick it up. The real irony here, of course, is that I’m betting many fans of the once beloved show don’t much care. Will I watch it on NBC or ABC next year? Most likely. But this show is pale shadow of it’s former self, and sometimes it’s better to just let your loved ones go, you know?

One show that doesn’t have networks bickering over it is “Quarterlife.” After airing just the first of the internet show’s six episodes, NBC pulled the plug, and Sunday’s planned timeslot went to “Deal or No Deal” instead. I had recorded the first episode but hadn’t gotten around to watching it. I suppose I could simply watch it all online, but I just wasn’t that interested in the show to begin with, so I think I’ll just move on.

Fans of “Gossip Girl” will be happy to know that the CW has given the show an early pickup. You “Supernatural” fans can cheer too, along with all four of the “One Tree Hill” fans. Of course “America’s Next Top Model” and “Smallville” got renewals as well, but a happy surprise is that “Everybody Hates Chris” is coming back. I stopped watching the show after its first season, but it’s one of those shows that just makes me happy to know that it’s still out there.

July 23 — mark it on your calendar. That’s when the fantastic British show “Spaced” finally gets itself a stateside DVD release. Long fucking time coming, and not a moment too soon, since Fox may ruin our fond memories of the show if it pickups the McG remake-pilot that it’s apparently ready to greenlight. Mc-mother-fucking-G.

But before that date comes around, how about this — finally, we’re less than a month away from the “Battlestar Galactica” Season Four premiere (April 4, bitches!). If you’re looking for a little 8-minute refresher of how we got where we are now, then this is the video for you (and obviously, the DVD Folks who want to remain un-spoiled should not watch).

And just because any reference to “Scrubs” warrants watching this video again:

… and this one:

I still *adore* the song Poison. That is all.

Posted by: llism at March 5, 2008 12:21 PM

I scream at my television in Swahili when the On Demand pulled the "Psyche, Psyche, Supapsyche!" move and didn't pre-broadcast the final episode. And I don't even know Swahili. Alright, maybe I was just so angry, I made a bunch of clicks and whistles, but still, motherfuck you HBO. Motherfuck you in the ear with my big toe.

However, I am pleased with the fact that the last episode will be an hour and a half. Because, seriously, how in the pink and purple balled fuck do you wrap this up in a hour?

Posted by: insertclevernamehere at March 5, 2008 12:25 PM

Even if the last couple of seasons of Scrubs haven't been as good as they could have been, it's still a far better show than a lot of the crap that's on TV now, and it deserves to come to a real conclusion now that the strike is over. Plus that way we get to see more Turkleton.

OhmigoditsalmosttimefornewBattlestar!!

Posted by: gelis at March 5, 2008 12:27 PM

YES! The Turk air band dance is one of my favorite moments of the show.

That's when the fantastic British show "Spaced" finally gets itself a stateside DVD release.

!!!! Finally.

Posted by: Julie at March 5, 2008 12:27 PM

"That girl is poiiiisooooon!"

I still try to dance like Turk whenever I hear this song. Honestly, out of the few shows I watch anymore, this one is the one I can watch over and over again, and it still be just as funny the first time.

I have yet to sample Spaced...is it really as good as everyone says it is?

Posted by: Shadows of Dakaron at March 5, 2008 12:30 PM

I see your a big fan of Turkelton.

I know "Scrubs" has been on a decline, but still--I love it and will watch it until the end. And a little Turk love is always good.

Posted by: em at March 5, 2008 12:33 PM

COOL CATS!!!

I don't care how long it's been since the song came out, I will belt out Poison anytime, anywhere.

And I don't care how not-as-funny-as-it-used-to-be Scrubs gets, I still love those characters and will hang in there until the last episode.

Posted by: Kolby at March 5, 2008 12:34 PM

I hope they don't crap out another season of Scrubs. I thought the reason that the show was ending was because Zach Braff didn't want to do another season. Regardless, they should just end it now; let it be on a high note.

Also, there is nothing wrong with "Poison." That song kicks ass. I love the lyric "She's just a big butt and a smile."

While I'm happy that Everybody Hates Chris is renewed, Smallville needs to end already. That show has been sucking for a few years now, and they're basically recycling the same plots over and over again.
This is how the eps go: Clark loves Lois. Lois loves Clark. Clark/Lois/Some random person gets attacked by bad guy. Clark defeats bad guy, who vows to return and wreak havoc upon Smallville. Clark & Lois reconcile and look at the stars for a while. The end.

Posted by: Brie at March 5, 2008 12:35 PM

I don't usually read the trade round up, but I did today, because that dance Turk does is my favorite part of any Scrubs episode ever.

and now I'm extremely pleased that I chose to read this, because CHRIST ALIVE SPACED ON DVD IN THE US. seriously, Fox, don't cheapen this.

Posted by: Jessica at March 5, 2008 12:36 PM

Whoa...It seems that if you fix your comment before it is completely submitted, both versions are posted. Good to know...good to know.

Brie - I always thought it was "Never trust a big butt and smile."

Hmmm...

W-w-w-w-wait.....Spaced remake?

Goddammit.

So true...my roommate and I like to make dinner together and watch the reruns on Comedy Central, even though I own every season.

It's so quoteable...

"Stop it! I don't have gay jungle fever!"

"Maybe I shouldn't bother."
"Maybe you mopn't."

I certainly hope so. I'm still miffed about the shortchanging that the region 1 "24 Hour Party People" got. Making the Mighty Boosh available too would be nice, but I'm not holding my breath considering how long Spaced took.

"Who the fuck is John Simm??"

Dill the Devil: Oh God, yes, Spaced is as good as everyone says. Best. Sitcom. Ever.

I think that spot's taken by Blackadder (in the UK division, anyway) I'd say Spaced stands equally with Black Books, as the funniest contemporary British comedies. I know most people say that's the office, but if you cringe throughout instead of laughing, is it really a comedy?

Posted by: cockroach at March 5, 2008 12:54 PM

I seriously need to start renting Black Adder from Netflix...should I start at the waaay beginning?

Posted by: Julie at March 5, 2008 1:01 PM

What can I say, it's been a while since I've heard the song. All I remember was that it was about a butt and a smile.

Posted by: Brie at March 5, 2008 1:04 PM

Julie start at the second series, when Ben Elton started co-writing. Black Adder is one of 5those series that reverse jumped the shark (it jumped the shark the normal way with the shitty 'back and Forth' special. Should have ended with the poppies. No question

Posted by: cockroach at March 5, 2008 1:04 PM

Cockroach: Good point. Blackadder at its finest is damned near untouchable. Good call on Black Books too - I agree that it stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Spaced, quality-wise.

Bernard Black: "I'm about to stop playing 'Who Shall I Kill First' in my head and just go with what feels natural! I'm thinking me! Then you!"

Why hasn't the Murder Tank already paid a visit to McG? And I don't even know anything about Spaced. I can simply sense that his doing a remake is clearly a terrible, horrible, very bad idea.

Posted by: tamatha at March 5, 2008 1:32 PM

I still love Scrubs. No, it's not been as good in the past year (though I don't think anything is as bad as the episode where they tried to get all political on our asses), but it's still better comedy than most of what's out there. Will watch Scrubs till the end. It's just so damn funny, and yeah, quotable, which brings me to the best quote (top 10, anyway):

People are bastard-covered bastards with bastard filling.

Cox rules.

Posted by: Slash at March 5, 2008 1:35 PM

It's too late for "Scrubs" to end on a high note.

Yeah, it's still on TiVo, but mostly out of nostalgia.

Whenever they add babies to a show, it's a sign the quality is going out with the tide. Babies are the last gasp of a desperate comedy writer.

Posted by: Wednesday at March 5, 2008 1:36 PM

nadine god your TV execs must think their audiences are fucking retarded!!!!

I'm pretty sure they do, but to fairer on them than they actually deserve, it's partly to do the length of a British series (particularly comedy) vs American seasons.British comedy is usually six episodes long, eight at most, whereas American Seasons are usually fourteen episodes long at least

Posted by: cockroach at March 5, 2008 1:40 PM

SPACED! YESSSSSS!

That show is damn near flawless. I consider the Pegg/Wright films to be perfect, and I can't believe they were doing it so well so early. I just wish they could team up with Jessica Hynes again, because (as they've said) she's gotten the complete short end of the stick since Pegg and Wright have become famous. Nick Frost, too, and he doesn't write.

In conclusion, THANK YOU TV GODS! This is proof there IS a Santa. Spaced on NA DVD was what I asked from the TPTB for Christmas '06. They're running a little slow, but [colbert]I CALLED IT![/colbert]

Posted by: Sarah at March 5, 2008 1:40 PM

Shadows,

I watched the entire run of Spaced on YouTube last November, and I really enjoyed it. It has some intensely weird moments, and sometimes I have an intense urge to shout 'RABBIT, RABBIT, RABBIT, RABBIT, RABBIT' when it gets too quiet. You'll see what I mean.

I have to second the endorsements for Black Books (fetch me my ice lolly!) and Blackadder.

I also wasn't wild about the 'Back and Forth Special' either. The poppies was a really poignant, heartbreaking end, especially when you consider the downward trajectory of the so-called Blackadder line. I think they should've just left it at that. But then, I'm overly harsh on stunt casting, so the appearance of Kate Moss did nothing for me. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, so I'll leave it at that.

No love for the first series 'The Blackadder'? I'll take a stab.

Julie: The first series of Blackadder (the one that centres around the aprocryphal reign of Richard IV), is generally the least-loved series. It was on the air in 1983, the ratings were middling, and the reviews were mixed. Rowan Atkinson was writing, and as cockroach, Esq. mentioned, it didn't yet have the talents of Ben Elton on its writing staff.
The tone of the first series is MUCH darker than that of the other seasons, and the first Edmund Blackadder is a bastard in every imaginable way. The later incarnations of the eponymous character are no saints by ANY stretch of the imagination, but they were very witty, and had a sort of sweaty, smarmy charm to them. Not so the case for the first one, he had no redeeming qualities. And R.A.'s performance is very snivelly and awkward. Think of a syphillitic Snidely whiplash suffering from malnutrition, something likely resulted in bubons, and an oversized codpiece.

Also, the well-loved Baldrick character is completely different in that first series, but I won't tell you how.

I think it handles the dilemma surrounding how a person was to get through life in brutal, ignorant times really well. It illustrated the point that at every level of society, around every corner and in every conceiveable situation, there were about a google ways to get yourself tortured and killed. Or, if you were lucky, you just catch some horrible skin ailment.

Crazy people-- more interested in power and gory glories were running the show, and you see that to an extent, their so-called kingdoms were just a means to an end of exchanging power and wealth. So really, it was entirely within social mores to kill family members, it was the time. So that's what I like about The Blackadder, it did a good job (to me) conveying the chaos and cruelty.

Although, there are a lot of characters in the first series that don't show up again. They do a good job of conveying the kind of passive, apathetic acceptance of viciousness that lets things continue in that way.

Brian Blessed ('rumpy-pumpy'!), is a fun psychopath, but I can why people would get turned off by his character...he's a psychopath. Elspeth Gray is bemused, and that's about it. She's a good foil to the utter insanity of the other characters, and she's got a lot of strange secrets, but...I don't know. Robert East plays the Prince of Wales, who's a very good contemporary citizen and everyone's favourite, but I'm not sure why he's there, because he's boring as hell and doesn't add anything. Lots of minor characters and on-location filming, so it's much more sweeping and epic than the later seasons. And that ending is a hum-dinger. Well the other ones are too. Eh, you'll see. This show had some jaw-dropping season finales.

I'm not saying it's as good, but it's definitely memorable, and I think it gets a bad wrap. The series premiere is REALLY great. Peter Cook is pissed and posthumous in it- what the heck else do you need?

Posted by: Jo 'Mama' Besser at March 5, 2008 1:48 PM

Damnit, I'm only halfway through the second season of BSG. I have 3 weeks to get and watch season 3. I think I'm SOL.

Posted by: JP at March 5, 2008 1:59 PM

My bad; Liliana. I meant Lana. I am just bizarre today.

But honestly, I'm not a fan of Lois, either. While Lana reminds me of a mannequin, (literally and figuratively) Lois just seems bitchy to me. She takes the "snarky reporter" thing too far. If it were up to me, Clark would've hooked up with Chloe a long time ago, instead of her being with the nerdy Jimmy Olson.

Posted by: Brie at March 5, 2008 2:03 PM

Julie:

No, do not start at Season 2. Absolutely start at Season 1. Otherwise you'll miss out on the best Richard the Third humor available as well as the classic episode where Blackadder is appointed Archbishop of Canterbury ("Now how can we make money from this? Souvenier Stand. Relics of the Hand of Jesus? Boxes of Five?")

Posted by: PaddyDog at March 5, 2008 2:08 PM

I keep that episode of Scrubs on my Tivo so I can watch that scene when I'm depressed. Between the last episode of The Wire coming up and Brett Favre's retiment, it's becoming a rough week. After watching the clip I feel a little better - it never fails to make me smile.

What's with the John Simm reference? Is he in Spaced? (sorry, ugly American here who doesn't know anything about British culture unless it's on BBC America)

Posted by: Three-nineteen at March 5, 2008 2:12 PM

Excellent...thanks so much to you as well, Jo Mamma and Paddy. I added it to my queue earlier, but I did start with series one. I hate the idea of possible missing out on inside jokes or the like in future series. Though cockroach has me completely psyched for the 2nd season.

Posted by: Julie at March 5, 2008 2:20 PM

It's funny, cause I edited my comment from "I started speaking 'retard'" to 'Swahili', because I know there are people who's panties get all pretzeled when people wield the ol' drool stick, and I managed to offend someone pretty much every time I express an opinion. So I try to pick something I think is safe and non-offensive. But once again, I just prove I'm a prick.

Spaced! Finally! I adore this show. But does anyone know if they're swapping out some of the music? I remember Simon Pegg saying that part of the holdup had to do with music rights.

Three-nineteen: John Simm is in one episode of Spaced. But he doesn't talk. Still pretty to look at though. The "Who the fuck is John Simm?" thing is from The Mighty Boosh though, right?

Posted by: docsmartypants at March 5, 2008 2:36 PM

Regarding John Simm, that was a quote from The Mighty Boosh, but yes, he had a small part on Spaced (as well as aforementioned skimpy US dvd release 24 Hour Party People and, as you might have seen, Doctor Who).

And are they finally gonna put Nick Frost in this year? Simon and Jessica have already shown up, what's takin you guys?

Oh and let me also recommend "Look Around You" while I'm talking UK TV.

I know and love John Simm from State of Play and Life on Mars. The Doctor Who episodes won the drool and swoon trifecta for starring John Simm, David Tennant, AND John Barrowman. Now excuse me while I go put 24 Hour Party People in my DVD rental queue and try to figure out what the hell The Mighty Boosh is.

Even though Zach Braff and Sarah Chalke will never do anything funny again I shall always love Brown Bear, Janitor, and Coxie.

Posted by: Amanda47 at March 5, 2008 2:53 PM

Three-nineteen: I share your John Simm love. If you ever get the chance to see him in Crime and Punishment, I highly recommend it. Also Human Traffic (for a laugh) and Sex Traffic (for a cry). Oh! And The Lakes! OK, I'm going to stop now.

Posted by: docsmartypants at March 5, 2008 2:59 PM

Count me in on the Blackadder love (I can never hear the phrase "cunning plan" without thinking about Blackadder), but another one I like (I'm prepared for ridicule, for some reason) is The Vicar of Dibley. No, not as funny as Blackadder, but still pretty amusing. The mumbly guy cracks my shit up. I think his name is Jim. British comedies just seem to be better written than US ones, they don't seem to rely quite so much on boobies and fart jokes.

If it wasn't for PBS, I wouldn't see any of this...

I loved Life on Mars when I caught a few episodes of it when I was in England a couple of years ago - with all the John Simm love here, does anyone know if it'll be available in the US on DVD?

Ooh, I also adored him in Dr. Who. Is it weird that he got me into the Scissor Sisters? Track three!

I'm one of those people that hates for any show to get canceled, even when well past it's prime, and I'm an avid watcher of scrubs, and I still said, "oh, that's...cool" when I read it might get another season. Maybe I was wrong regarding the whole forever thing.

Can you count, suckas?

Posted by: Farfalina at March 5, 2008 4:44 PM

Count me in for the Spaced-on-DVD celebrating. Here's hoping that the extras are substantial.

Now Mark Heap just needs to start appearing in the Wright-Pegg-Frost films, and my Spaced-related wishes will be completely fulfilled. Well, and Katy Carmichael. And more Jessica Hynes and Julia Deakin and Peter Serafinowicz and Michael Smiley. Pretty much anyone that ever appeared on the show, really. I know next to nothing about any of these actors, but I'd love to see more of them because they all worked together so well on Spaced.

Posted by: Sycamore at March 5, 2008 4:51 PM

Anne (in Reno): I know BBC America showed both seasons of Life on Mars and that there's an American remake planned (swallows bile at the thought), so I suppose a US DVD release could happen in the not-too-distant future. I think they're going to run into some serious music rights problems though. The show had a kickass soundtrack, but that can really slow down a DVD release.

Posted by: docsmartypants at March 5, 2008 4:54 PM

Seth - I love you.

Scrubs is awesome even when it isn't. There's always at least something that is quotable or charming - even in the "political" episode from last season, you have Eliot and Keith making out in the closet after they both come out as Republicans. "What about Hilary?"
Pause. "I hate that bitch."
slurp, slurp, face-sucking.
LOVE!

Posted by: Tammy at March 5, 2008 4:55 PM

Oh my god, one of my favorite Eliot moments is when she has to refer to genitalia...

Turk: A penis is?
Eliot: Schwing-schwong, peepers, or peep.
Turk: And vaginas are...?
Eliot: DISGUSTING,

Hee. Frick on a stick with a brick!

Posted by: Julie at March 5, 2008 5:03 PM

One of my favorite Elliot moments is when she's recalling how she learned to call a vagina a "bajingo" - when her mother, played perfectly by Markie Post, tells her, "Whatever you do, never let a man put his dirty how-do-you-do in your bajingo."

Posted by: Slash at March 5, 2008 5:14 PM

Posted by: Shadows of Dakaron at March 5, 2008 5:21 PM

Slash,

DO NOT be embarassed of liking The Vicar of Dibley! I nearly plotzed when she jumped into that mud puddle that was deeper than anyone could have imagined. Sometimes I really, really enjoy gentle humour. I don't know if any non-Canadians have seen it, but Corner Gas is a lot like that. Not much happens per se in an episode, but it's very character-driven, and I like it a lot.

And Alice Tinker? COME ON! Normally, I don't really love the 'Requisite Loveable Doofus', but then I do enjoy Blackadder and Father Ted and a bunch of other stuff, so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. But Alice manages to be SO FUCKING THICK and entirely loveable too. Great show. They're not still thinking of re-making it with Kirstie Alley, are they? I wouldn't watch that.

I don't watch Vicar of Dibley as much as I'd like, but what I've seen is kinda delightful. That Alice... I haven't heard anything about a remake. It was just a matter of time, though. Hollywood specializes in purchasing an idea and then ruining everything about it that made it great. I hate them so very very much for their methodical and ruthless despoiling of the Seuss books.

And I like Corner Gas, too (WGN, THE SUPERSTATION! carries it down here). I haven't quite got all the character names down yet, but they're all great. Even the crazy old guy.

July 23? Really? REALLY?!? YES!!! Spaced was the single reason that I got a region-hackable DVD player. I caught the second series on BBC America reruns, and after watching two episodes I ordered it from Amazon UK. It is still in regular rotation (and I didn't join the comment diversion earlier, but that box set would probably be at the top of my pile. And I might as well just add Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz right underneath).

And those Turk scenes are definitely two of my favorites. Here's another:

Thank you so, so much for this.

I've never been that interested in Battlestar, but like most things I really wanted to know what was going on with it!

Plus you managed to add one of my favourite Scrubs scenes ever!

I loves me some Bel Biv Devoe..

And Hooch is still crazy.

I love the Todd, Turk, Jordan, Janitor and of course Cox. It still has funny moments. I will watch until the very end.

I love that clip that you linked.

Dear HBO,

Your time is almost up, what the fuck are you going to do March 9th at 10:33 p.m.? No more "Wire". You think you're going to keep us on the edge of our seats with another thrilling episode of "In Treatment". I'm so glad the end is near after you fucked over your loyal audience by canceling Deadwood. If only you would have giving "The Wire" the same respect you gave that fat fuck from Jersey, you would be the king of cable. Bitch ass, what the fuck are you going to do now? I know, how about a Cathouse marathon? Fucking faggots!!!

OK. confession time: I'd never seen the Turk "Poison" video until just now.

Maybe it's because I'm a teensy but drunk, but I've now watched it 5 times in a row and I... am. dying. Seriously. Years streaming down my face right now.

Whew.

I don't like either version of The Office, but adore Black Adder, Father Ted, Spaced, and The Mighty Boosh. I would rather laugh then cringe I guess.

TK...you were gonna be on my list when you said you hadn't seen it before...but seeing you enjoy yourself so much has changed my mind. Game on, my friend. It is one of the high points of an already great show. I can't help but laugh every time I see it too.

And no, it's not just because you're drunk. Seriously, do you even need to add that? I assumed you were still passed out next to the whiskey fountain...

He's so damn . . . talented. Thanks for that, I never get tired of watching Scrubs clips. And I agree that it might be best to let the show go with love rather than to keep it going, but I really think they should have the chance to give the show the send-off it deserves. And I want Dr. Cox to fight Hugh Jackman. It must happen!

somewhat late to the party, damn time zones but I just have to say.
Mark Heap + Green Wing = Genius.
I laugh so hard I worry I might be losing my mind.

Posted by: Pencil at March 6, 2008 7:55 AM

Shadows, I must have watched it five MORE times after I posted... and obviously, I was a bit sauced since I meant Tears, not Years, running down my face.

And now I feel like Hell.

The other clip is a goldmine as well. The next time I win a bet with Mrs. TK, you can bet your ass I'm gonna roar, "DO YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU MESS WITH THE WARRIOR?!"

Much eye-rolling will undoubtedly ensue.

I don't know what I hate worse: The fact that his name is McG or the fact that his movies make me vomit blood.

Posted by: JustKyle at March 6, 2008 11:18 AM

Jo"Mama" and Slash, I frickin' love Corner Gas! For some reason, none of my co-workers like it at all, but I think it's a seriously clever comedy. I mean, there was a running gag on punctuation in one episode, for pete's sake!

I disagree with the writer of this post--every season of Scrubs is awesome. Granted, the last couple seasons are not as good as the first three seasons, but I can always rely on Scrubs for a hearty laugh. Besides, My Musical, for me, was superb ("Everything comes down to poo", "Guy Love", "Dominican"). I love the way they incorporate the secondary characters too. I'd love to see the show have a proper ending.

You should post the Turk & The Todd Kung Fu Fighting sequence.

Damn, I'm late again! My hubby is from England and introduced me to Spaced, Black Books and I fell in love with Life on Mars. And apropos of nothing, I found Rowan Atkinson pretty hot in Blackadder II.
