All of us who have read the Game of Thrones books have known for a while now that the show and the books don’t match up. This coming season is going to feature even bigger departures from what’s on the page, which is exciting and terrifying. Exciting because surprises can be fun, and terrifying because now we have no warning when bad things are going to happen and can’t tease our TV viewer friends with that knowledge. It’s been confirmed that there’s at least one character who’s going to die this season who is still alive and kicking in the books, and it’s far from the first time that’s happened. This has led some of us to wonder if the show and books would end the same way, especially since the show will certainly end first.

Well, wonder no more, in a speech at Oxford Union featuring D.B Weiss, David Benioff, Kit Harrington, and John Bradley, David Benioff confirmed “And so we’ll eventually, basically, meet up at pretty much the same place where George is going; there might be a few deviations along the route, but we’re heading towards the same destination.” So we’ll get at least a few clues to where things are going in the books based on the show, but the paths will be different.

If you want to watch the whole speech (featuring drinking and teasing of Kit Harrington) here is the video:
