Fun With Words and Expressions
An Afternoon Comment Diversion / Dustin Rowles
Ten years ago, when I moved from the South to the Northeast, I found that nearly everywhere I went, people kept asking me “Are you all set?” or just simply, “All set?” At restaurants, in particular, members of the wait staff had a tendency to ask, around the time I’d finished my dinner, if I was “all set?” And I didn’t have a goddamn clue what they meant by it. “All set?” What the hell was that supposed to mean? Indeed, it took me several months to realize that “all set” meant a variety of things, including “Are you done?” “You okay?” or even a passive-aggressive means of saying, “fuck off.”
Anyway, I mention this by way of introduction to today’s comment diversion. This afternoon, we’re not going to test you on your favorite music, movie, or literary subcategories or genres, we’re going to get a little nonsensical. Having written reviews for three-plus years now, I’ve pretty much exhausted my vocabulary, so today we’re reaching out to you good folks to help us expand our lexicon or, better still, give us some insight into particular words that get under your skin. So, here’s five questions (and, by way of example, my own answers) about words and expressions. I suspect that, language-wise, many of you have a lot in common. Let’s see. All set?
1) What’s your favorite word? Prestidigitation.
2) What’s your favorite word from a foreign language? Kugelschreiber (German for ball-point pen).
3) What’s your least favorite word? There are two: Greasy, as in, and especially, “greasy boners,” and spoon, as in “Spoon me, Daddy-O.” But nothing is more toxic to the ear than the combination of both: Greasy spoon. It’s a diner, for God’s sake. Say diner!
4) What’s your favorite colloquial expression? “Not a man, child, or woman alive …”
5) What’s your favorite regional word? To dicker (Southern for, “To bargain.”)

Holla, westcoastpat!!
And it CRACKS me up that so many people hate "moist" and "panties." It particularly grosses me out because, when people hate both of those words, it makes me think of the two put together. *pause* EEEEWWWWWWW.
1. Portmanteau!! It's my favorite word AND my favorite kind of word!
2. Jashik -- a Korean word with no real English equivalent that simultaneously means "punk," "rascal," "sneak," and "smart-aleck." I've Anglicized it. The word for the practice of being a jashik would then be "jashikery."
3. I really hate it when people use "literally" figuratively, esp. since those who use it tend to OVERuse it. I know that it's acceptable now, but I don't think it should be. "It was so heavy that my arms literally fell off." Really, Joe? They fell off? They were torn from their sockets by the weight of those three textbooks? Then how you didn't bleed to death is beyond me.
4. I guess my all-time favorite is "yo mama."
5. I, like westcoastpat, am a fan of "THE 405" and "THE 5" when referring to freeways (and by that I mean "highways," for you Chicagoans out there). And, like Chesnut, I also love "dude" -- esp. "dude, seriously!"
SO FUN!!! I loved this diversion!!

5) What's your favorite regional word? "Whoopin'," Southern (or rural) for ass-kicking-level defeat -- "Even though we played at their field, we gave 'em a whoopin'. I also constantly say "fixin'" when I mean "preparing to," but it's unconscious on my part.

1) What's your favorite word? Gleet (Inflammation of the urethra resulting from chronic gonorrhea and characterized by a mucopurulent discharge.)
2) What's your favorite word from a foreign language? Schadenfreude (Satisfaction or pleasure felt at someone else's misfortune.) Only the Germans would have a word for this.
3) What's your least favorite word? "No problem." OK, that's not one word, but I'm sick of hearing people say, "No problem" when they really mean, "You're welcome."

Kt - "Chouette" does not mean "owl" in French; it's sort of a dated way of saying "cool". "Hibou" means owl. But I am wondering... did you have an FSL text book when you were a kid with a bespectacled and besneakered owl on the cover, and the text was called "Chouette"? Because I did!!!

Favorite Regional Word: Wicked (as in "wicked awesome" or "wicked reTAHdid!!!" Somehow, we Bostonians forgot the word "very" exists.)

"shoot me in the belly button and call me holy" another expression of surprise or just conversation filler as in my dad has nothing else to say
"rode hard and hung up wet" this is how my dad refers to "hard looking women" another one of his gems

I remember when I moved to New York, during my first week waiting tables I asked someone, "Can I get you something to drink? Coffee, tea, pop. . ." My customers looked at me like I had three heads and replied, "Pop?". I quickly added the word "soda" in my lexicon so I didn't seem so Midwestern.
Adding my own here, but my least favorite regional word is the use of "on line" in the Northeast. For instance, "I was standing on line waiting to buy a new Metro card. . ." Really? Was there a line you were standing on? No! You were standing IN a line, making up a line of people. Used to drive me and my former roommate CRAZY when we heard that.

I find it interesting how many people's fav foriegn words are Germanic. I personally believe it has something to do with the length of their words and the high "F" content thereof.

b--it doesn't??? I thought it did, and an internet search backed it up--but it was an *internet search*. My other memory of it was a giant graffiti owl with "chouette" painted underneath it, so maybe it just stuck in my head. I wonder if it has some contextual meaning in French? I'm so confused!
Sadly, I did not have an owl-enhanced French text in school.

2. Taco
3. Steer, its meaning where I'm from is a boy bull who has been clipped when hes a calf in order to put some weight on him and sell him to meat plants. There are actually many different names for what people call "cows," there is the bull, cow, heifer, steer, and calf. Learn somein' new everyday, now don' ya'!

1. Favorite word: Captivate. Love it.
2. Favorite foreign word: Biglietti (Italian for tickets-loved this word when I took italian in college)

4. Favorite colloquialism: For the love of all that is sweet and holy. Or, if pressed for time: For the love.
5. Favorite regional word: persnickety. Not really sure if this is regional, but my very southern Grandma used to say it all the time as in: "what's wrong with you? Why you so persnickety today?"
Posted by: Sarah at October 1, 2007 4:38 PM
Another for 4: "I loves me some . . ." as in, "I loves me some Simon Pegg--I've seen all his movies."
Silly. But fun to say.
Along the same lines: "Mm, Simon Pegg. Gotta get me some of that."

3. Ain't (Pap was an English teacher)
4. "I have to piss like a racehorse!"
5. Cattywampus. My Grandpa used to say it all the time.
Posted by: X at October 1, 2007 4:57 PM
1) What's your favorite word? sibilance.

Posted by: Ella at October 1, 2007 5:01 PM
1) Defenestration.
2) Struzzicadenti. It's italian for toothpick, and a fun word to say.
3) Bandwidth. This is a buzzword with people I work with, i.e. "What's your bandwidth in being able to help with the project?" and it makes me batty, as they use it instead of asking "Hey, can you help me out?"
4) "Che c'e vuoi fa?" (prn: kay chay VOY fa) Italian for "What can you do" or "What are you gonna do?" Works be when shrugging shoulders and holding palms up in a pantomime. Why didn't they ever use this on the Sopranos?
5) Hyphy. Because I'm from the Yay Area.
Posted by: Krix at October 1, 2007 5:02 PM
Favorite word: Fuck (Thumbs up to David. "Fuck" is indeed the duct tape of the language)
Foriegn Language: Brulee (fun to say, better to eat)
Least favorite: any form of the verb "to be" so dull, so boring, so omnipresent in my students' papers
Colloquial: My mom says, "I'm going to do x if it hare lips the whole world." I find that extremely funny. Also, "Dumb as a box of hair" comes in very handy.
Regional: Southern terms of endearment: darling, sugar, dear, sweetie, etc... I'm awful to use those to refer to total strangers, which got me scolded quite harshly by a drunk lady at Fenway once.
Least favorite regional: wicked, because when we moved to Boston, my husband began to use it as if he was a native.
Posted by: Katie at October 1, 2007 5:06 PM
Favorite word: poop
Favorite foreign word: weltschmerz, German for world-weariness. Pretentious, yes, but it's still a pretty freaking cool word.
Least favorite word: pretentious

Favorite regional word: There are so many, I can't pick just one.
Posted by: Trixie at October 1, 2007 5:09 PM

1) What's your favorite word? Implicate.
2) What's your favorite word from a foreign language? Usotsuki - it means "liar" in Japanese. It's really fun to say.
3) What's your least favorite word? This isn't really an explicit word that I don't like, so much as a usage, but I HATE it when people name their child "Alexia." Sure it sounds pretty, but it's actually the inability to read caused by brain damage. So stop it.
4) What's your favorite colloquial expression? I think the only one I ever actually use is "Jesus H. Christ!"
5) What's your favorite regional word? Hella. Sorry, Northern California will live within me forever.

4) What's your favorite colloquial expression? "Fuck if I know" or "Get the fuck outta here"
5) What's your favorite regional word? Don't really have one; I'm from Oklahoma, and most of our "regionalisms" are not particular to Oklahoma and/or sound ignorant. People say "fixin' to" quite a lot, meaning "getting ready to" or "about to" do something, but I wouldn't call that a favorite.
Posted by: LL at October 1, 2007 5:12 PM
1. Favorite word: Toast or Toaster
2. Favorite Foreign Word: tak (Danish for "thanks") or mantequilla de cacahuetes ("peanut butter" in Spanish)
3. Least favorite word: This isn't a word per se, but I HATE the pseudo-riche trend of naming children (be they boys or girls) last/street/place names. See: Madison, Taylor, Tyler, Jackson, Harrison, Dakota, Brooklyn, etc. My class list looks like a damn signing of the Constitution.

"That color is very becoming on you." Ugh. Stupid ass word.
4) What's your favorite colloquial expression? "Rode hard and put away wet" not because I am hard looking (at least I hope not) but because that is what I feel like most days and also "Well, bless your heart" because some Southerners tell me it is a polite way of saying "Well, fuck you". And I always try to be polite.
5) What's your favorite regional word? Pop - yeah, I'm Midwestern.
Posted by: jen310 at October 1, 2007 5:18 PM
1. boob but only when used as an adjective- calling someone a boob is so much fun.
my other favourite word is a word that was submitted to an invent-a-word contest: sarchasm, which is described as the silent void between the person who makes a sarcastic joke and his audience who doesn't get it.
2. dépanneur Québec french word for corner store or general store.
3. guesstimate or any other made-up, office-speak catch phrase like it. drives me f**king nuts and makes me want to slap the smarmy wanker that says it (usually the kind of person that also says basically too much thinking that it makes them sound smart).
4. give 'er, which, as far as I can tell, is a true Canadianism, meaning variously "Do it!", "Let loose", "give it your best shot", "work it" etc etc
5. irie, from Jamaica, meaning "good", "goodness", "positive", "wellness". The classic Marcia Griffiths song Back in the Day has the line "...and everyone feeling irie..", meaning everyone feeling good and happy.

During the day as I thought of the posts & came back to read more, what about expressions that people say totally wrong? Like "let's flush this out" when they mean 'flesh'? Or "hone in on something" when they should say 'home'? Seems like Pajibans are really bothered by people who say things incorrectly, although understandably endearing when it's part of the local color...

1) What's your favorite word? Onomatopoeia
2) What's your favorite word from a foreign language? Über. I like to add it to words all the time.
3) What's your least favorite word? More than any one word, I hate silly nicknames. If I meet someone that everyone calls Wiggles, I may have to find out his real name. That goofy shit bugs the hell out of me.
4) What's your favorite colloquial expression? "It's hotter than the tits on a boar hound." I never really get to use this one, but I love it.
5) What's your favorite regional word? My ex boyfriend's mother referred to bell peppers as mangoes. Apparently, it is a common thing to say in Southern Ohio.

1. Favorite word:
* curvilinear
* interconnectedness
2. Favorite word in a foreign language:
* Doch (A German word that can be pretty much used in most conversation as "on the contrary". It's like an alternative to answering yes or no to a question - and it removes that whole
'did you mean yes or no?' factor that usually happens)
3. Least Favorite Word:
* Minger (British slang for ugly. Eg. "He's a right minger" or "She was mingning")
4. Favorite Colloquial expression:
* "Did you get a wet ass and no fish?" (eg. Did you do something and returned with nothing)
* "A Kangaroo short in the top paddock" (eg. crazy, lost a few marbles)
5. Favorite regional word:
* Dag (If you call someone a dag then they are either a funny person or a bag dresser - eg. "You're such a dag". The term comes from farming where the manure that sticks to a sheeps ass is referred to as a dag)

RE: the above post.
The regional terms are all Aussie - just in case you couldn't tell from the kangaroo reference

2. Also weird; mine's German too: 'schnurbart' (moustache).
3. Least favorite word: like a lot of these peoples, that'd be 'panties'.
4. "Dead and too dumb to fall over", or "Fine words butter no parsnips/feed no cats"
5. 'Nugget'. Probably derived from 'butt nugget', this late 80's western Oregon-ism pretty much meant 'scumbag', but often simply meant 'headbanger'.

5) What's your favorite regional word? Janky. I don't know if that's regoinal though. I don't hear it very often. How about joder? That's kinda like "Oh fuck" in Spanish.

Favorite word in a foreign language: "Pamplemousse," French for grapefruit. One of approximately 10 words I can say in French. (I'm fluent in Spanish and love it, but nothing in that language can beat pamplemousse.)
Least favorite word: Not so much the word itself as the incorrect usage of "literally". Because if it goes on much longer, I will literally kill people who don't use it properly.
Favorite colloquial expression: "Not trying to," used as you would "doesn't want to." E.g. "She's not trying to hear that."

1) What's your favorite word? Sweetpea
2) What's your favorite word from a foreign language? Have to go with the French phrase, "en un clin d'oeil" (in the twinkling of an eye). Never, ever let a French teacher, who speaks English with a strong Scottish accent, try to get her class to incorporate colloquialisms in their essays. It's been twenty-odd years but I still crack up thinking of essay after essay where the whole class worked in "en un clin d'oeil."
3) What's your least favorite word? Nuclear. Thank YOU, President Bush.

2. Favorite foreign word: I studied German for a while, so there are so many words I love (like genau (exactly) and pfeifen (whistle)) but the best one is one that I read in a collection of Hesse poems: Märchenaugen. I don't know if it is an actual word, but it literally means "fairy tale eyes" and is used to explain how children see the world. How awesome is that?
3. Least favorite: Sliver. Doesn't sound real; it sounds like it is trying to take over "Slither"'s turf.
4. Expression: "Whatever floats your boat." My grandma always said the variation "Whatever turns you on" and that always creeped me out a bit.

"A whole nother." You hear it all the time in the midwest, rather than "another whole", it's "a whole nother."
5) What's your favorite regional word?
...I don't know. I can't think of one right now.

Oh, I love this. Hard one. OK:
1) This is so hard. I'll go with mellifluous, for now.
2) Probably putamadre, which is Spanish and literally means "whore-mother," but is used like motherfucker is in English
3) When people use random in stupid ways, like, "Wow, that was so random!" No, it was a coincidence. Also, shut up. I have many more like this, but I'll stop myself.
4) Hmm, maybe "Sweet zombie Jesus!" except no one really says that naturally (if you do, you are really awesome and I wish I were more like you).
5) Vermonters call soft-serve "a cremee." I've read that there's an actual difference between soft-serve and cremees, but I don't know if that's true.

1. egregious (this week)
2. Frauenstimmen- female voices

For real, Donna, Yiddish is the best language EVER. Unfortunately, I only know the smattering of words my mom ever used. Some I love (and these are all appoximate spellings):
falshugana: (fale-shug-ana) all messed up, from the word "falsh" meaning fake
schmata: literally "rag" but used to describe any material
shikse: (shik-sah) not the nicest term for a non-jewish woman (see: WASPy temptress)
mishpokhe: (mis-puk-ah) the whole darn family (see: "Oh, I can't hang out today, the whole mishpokhe is coming over for dinner. Oh vey!")

1) What's your favorite word? Pimlico, it's a place in London and I don't know why but the word gives me shivers. Also contendors are vanilla, plethora and bollocks
2) What's your favorite word from a foreign language? schadenfreude and weltschmerz tied, both German and both beautifully descriptive.
3) What's your least favorite word? It's a tie between snog and shag, way to make something passionate and slightly dirty sound like something out of a kid's cartoon guys!
4) What's your favorite colloquial expression? For Fuck's sake!
5) What's your favorite regional word? Any form of the word owt: Usage "D'you want owt from shop?" or classically in the negative as N'owt. It's a Yorkshire phrase and as I lived with two northern lasses for years I kind of picked it up. Sounds ludicrous in my Oxfordian English accent but I am unable to stop myself from using it.

2) What's your favorite word from a foreign language? 马上 (ma3 shang4) from Mandarin Chinese--in combination it means "immediately", but word-for-word means "on a horse". And sacapuntas from Spanish (pencil sharpener).
3) What's your least favorite word? I agree with a lot of other people on moist, panties, phlegm(atic).
4) What's your favorite colloquial expression? "Not the brightest bulb on the tree."
5) What's your favorite regional word? Spendy (Midwestern American for "expensive").

Oh. My. God.
This is the best comment diversion with the funniest replies ever.
I keep hooting aloud at my computer screen, between people making me say "Yes, YES!" in profound agreement and people just making me laugh with some hilarious word or phrase.
It's way too late in the thread to add my input, as most would be repeats of previously-stated favorites ... save one:
Though I now live in France, I grew up in New York State. My favorite regional word is one that I think is geographically confined to New York's Orange-Ulster-Sullivan counties, and it's more of a regional pronunciation than a regional word per se.
The word, on paper, is "drawer." As in, the thing in a desk, or in the kitchen.
But it comes out of my mouth as "draw."
And I'm not alone.

I've heard locals use it to refer to bike chain grease and dirt.
(etymology courtesy of my slightly mad Mother, so possibly completely wrong, but interesting nonetheless)
*Funnily, whenever a scally** from Crewe is arrested, they give their address as Crewecheshireengland, even if they're in a police station in Cheshire.
**North Western equivalent of chav
