An Afternoon Comment Diversion
We don’t have anything exciting to present this afternoon, so I how about the iPod shuffle game? Ms. Pajiba-Hyphenate and I like to play it on long road trips and then mock one another for the contents of our iPods. It’s simple and kind of cheesy, which is what makes it so enjoyable. Simply pull out your iPod, hit shuffle, and tell us what the first five songs are. No cheating. If you have Ashlee Simpson in the first five, you are obligated to confess to it. It’s the joy of anonymous public humiliation.
Pajiba Love 03/21/07 | | Dude, You Like So Totally Can't Go Home Again

Alright, I don't think I did too bad:
1. Beck - Tropicalia (from Mutations)
2. Wake Up Mr. West (Feat. Bernie Mac) - Kanye West (from Late Registration)
3. 11-5 - David and the Bear (from the Fall of the West 2005 Sampler)
4. When You Heard You - French Kicks (from One Time Bells)
5. Yearnin' - The Black Keys (from The Big Come Up)
and because I'm not sure Bernie Mac talking counts as a song,
6. Heartbeats (Rex the Dog remix) - The Knife (from Deep Cuts)
As a side note, I used to play the incredible iPod Mash-Up game with my girlfriend on the train: each player inserts one earbud form each players iPod into one of their ears. Hit shuffle on both iPods - the resulting cacaphony, modified further by right and left levels in each song, ranges from brilliant to headache inducing (which is when you hit the next button).

Good Fucking Bye - Matt Skiba and Kevin Seconds
River Euphrates - The Pixies
Wild Dub - Generation X
Watch It Die - Bad Religion
Police Truck - Dead Kennedys
...wow. That's a much better picture of what I actually listen to.
From what I've seen, the Pajiba crowd has (what I consider to be) amazingly good taste in music. I feel right at home.

This is, I'm almost sure, a silly question, but before I hoist myself from the company's body pillows (nontraditional offices are fantastic) and retrieve my musical device, does the ipod shuffle HAVE a shuffle mode? If so, I haven't found it, but then again I'm a bit of a technophobe (in an endearing rather than anarchy-minded way). The shuffle is the tiny little one being advertised to the left of the comments section.
Posted by: Becca at March 21, 2007 6:05 PM
Becca-
The iPod Shuffle is always on shuffle mode (hence the name), so just hit play and write down the first five songs it plays. What the shuffle doesn't have is a non-shuffle mode.

I have eclectic tastes...
1. C'est Moi - Robert Goulet (Camelot-Broadway Original Cast Recording)
2. Dream Manifestation - Ron Clearfield
3. Oh Come All Ye Faithful/Nu Brown Maiden - Druidstone

2. Memory - Sugarcult
3. ABC's of Love - Rooney
4. Bleed American - Jimmy Eat World
5. Tokyo Nights - Hikaru Utada
My tastes are all over the place. Unfortunately, the shuffle had to pick emo/pop bands for 3 out of 5.
Posted by: Christine at March 21, 2007 6:08 PM
Man, I'm totally okay with my five:
1. "The Deep." Gary Hoey.
2. "sharp darts." the streets.
3. "Where I End and You Begin." Radiohead.
4. "Young Pilgrims." The Shins.
5. "Rock n' Roll Junkie." Motley Crue.

"We Both Go Down Together" - The Decemberists
"Glory Hallelujah" - Brian Wright & the Waco Tragedies
"About the Moon" - Rilo Kiley
"Fight Test" - The Flaming Lips
"A Good Idea at the Time" - OK Go
Wow, iTunes was pretty kind to me. I know there's a huge potential for embarrasment in my iTunes library.
Posted by: miranda at March 21, 2007 6:12 PM
And I couldn't help doing it a second time, which turned out just as fine:
1. "Army Ants." Tom Waits.
2. "Power of the Orange." Tori Amos.
3. "That I would be Good." Alanis Morissette.
4. "Shake Break Bounce." Chemical Brothers.
5. "Spegetti Western. Primus."

I last updated my Ipod in 2005 right before I moved to Vienna. I put absolutely everything I knew I would NEVER hear in Europe on it. Therefore, I am relatively certain I'm going to be mortified by what the old (no, really, it's old!) machine comes up with
1. Everyday I have the Blues- Tony Bennett and Stevie Wonder
2. It's Not Easy Being Green- Kermit the Frog
3. Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree- Glen Miller
4. Swan Lake's Pas De Deux- Tchiakovsky played by the Berliner Philharmonik
5. It Had to Be You- Frank Sinatra
Actually not too mortifying, except that it appears I am 73 instead of 23.

2. You're Gonna Miss Me, The Thirteenth Floor Elevators
3. Ageless Beauty, Stars
4. Sonata for Piano and Cello, Yo-Yo Ma
5. Publish My Love, Rogue Wave
haha, got off pretty easy there! iTunes shuffle mode is a great and terrible invention, indeed...

3) Martha by Tom Waits
4) Star Me Kitten by R.E.M
5) The Mast by Feist

OK, got it:
"This heart's on fire"- Wolf Parade
"Yankee go home"- Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
"Jacksonville"- Sufjan Stevens
"What a wonderful man"- My Morning Jacket
"Over and over again"- Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Pretty representative, though my primary ipod time is spent running, so things like Jacksonville are replaced with songs that have a more obvious beat (All Things Go by Stevens, the Decemberists, The Scissor Sisters, etc).
Posted by: Becca at March 21, 2007 6:22 PM
Iriska-
Does the shuffle setting imply that the songs aren't part of a playlist or does it specifically mean that they are entirely random? I can keep my songs in order but I can't make playlists; I also just found the 'random' setting.
Posted by: Becca at March 21, 2007 6:25 PM
I'm up for another go around
Time is Nothing - John Frusciante (From the Sounds Inside) **everyone should love this guy immediately.
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2 (Joshua Tree)

Checkered Floor - Silversun Pickups (Carnavas)
Sunday Morning Coming Down - Johnny Cash

1. "Knock Yourself Out," Jon Brion
2. "The Lord God Bird," Sufjan Stevens
3. "Fred Meyers," Glen Phillips
4. "My Moon My Man," Feist
5. "Love Is a Battlefield," Pat Benatar... I had a strong urge to get that one after watching "13 Going On 30" on TBS a while back. Don't you judge me!

3 - A Message To You, Rudy - The Specials
4 - Down On The Corner - CCR
5 - Heaven Or Las Vegas - The Cocteau Twins
I try not to have anything on there I really don't want to listen to; the only music I'm remotely embarrassed by is a few by Paula Abdul (the old, old crap) that I never listen to, but haven't taken off, because, why? I have 20 gigs to fill and have only taken up about 3. I have fewer than 1000 songs.
Anybody know how the shuffle mode works? I assume it's an algorithm of some kind, does anybody know what it is? Just curious.

"The Legionnaire's Lament" - The Decemberists.
"BYOS" - Regina Spektor.
"Pennyroyal Tea" - Nirvana.
"Bad Reputation" - Freedy Johnston.
"Four Left Feet" - The Ditty Bops.

There's another version of this game that's more representative of taste and possibly more embarrassing: When you plug your I-pod in to a computer, you can sort songs by number of times played. (I don't know if/how this works with other players.)

3. 1 thing feat. Eve - Amerie
4. Set The Fire to the First Bar feat. Martha Wainwright - Snow Patrol
5. Get you home feat. Foxy Brown - Blackstreet
Now if that is not a perfect example of diversity, then I don't know what is!

A poster upthread asked about another poster's version of the BNL song "If I Had a Million Dollars," and before I begin, I'd just like to point out that it might actually be BNL, as they are in the practice of occasionally performing bluegrass versions of their own songs.
Also, if Daniel Carlson was including Josh Ritter in this "alt-country" summation, well... no.
Now, then...
"Bye Bye, Love" - Simon & Garfunkel

J-
The question mark next to George Strait's name makes it appear that you're not sure who's performing the song on your playlist. If I had to guess, I think you're talking about "Tight Fittin' Jeans" by Conway Twitty, who generally wrote some pretty creepy country tunes. ("You've Never Been This Far Before" is like listening to a ballad about date rape.) The song isn't to be confused with Mel McDaniel's "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On," which is dumb but harmless.
...If it's a mainstream country song from 1987-1994, I probably know it. Don't ask me how.

I'm actually charging up my iPod so that I can join in and play. It's all very exciting.
I'm not sure I've actually ever HEARD an Ashlee Simpson song, or maybe I did once, I think I probably couldn't tell what the hell it was she was squeaking about. Hmmm. My iPod does have a hell of a lot of cheese music on it though so I am slightly frightened. No cheating for Alex though, oh no.
Aw crap, it ends badly:
1) "Haushinka" Greenday
2) "Wonderful" Everclear
3) "Guest List" The eels
4) "Girl in a Cage" Horrorpops
5) "Everything Louder than Everything else" Meatloaf.
Absolutely downright shocking. And as proof that admitting the fact that I have all 3 Bat out of Hell albums on my iPod brings me good music karma here's what I got second time round:
1) "Kiss you Off" Scissor Sisters
2) "19th Nervous Breakdown" Rolling Stones
3) "Creeping up the Backstairs" The Fratellis
4) "I'm not cryin' for you" Save Ferris
Oh bollocks.

1. Sound and Vision - David Bowie (how fitting, he's my all-time favorite!)
2. Transmission (with St. Vitus Dance interlude) - Bauhaus (yay! my second fave, this is going well)
3. Dog End of a Day Gone By - Love and Rockets (okay, now this is scary, my third favorite artist)
4. Bring Me the Head of the Preacher Man - Siouxsie and the Banshees
5. I Keep Forgetting - David Bowie (oh, there it goes....the cheese)
And some five more because this is so much fun!

7. Stay - guess who.....
8. Wind - Red Elvises (hells yeah for siberian surf rock)
9. Hold On - Lou Reed
10. For Tomorrow - Blur
I'm surprised, that was a pretty good mix. I've never used the shuffle function before because I'm always skeptical of how it will turn out, but maybe I will. Too bad it didn't get some of my faves in there like David J, Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, Joy Division, The Decemberists, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club....but it's all good.

Looking over this list and saying, "Hmm, someone else I've never heard of...." proves to me my utter lack of musical hipness. Perhaps there should be a Pajiba's Guide to what's good for you in regards to music for backwards folk like me.
Before I list my shuffles of shame, I want to cover my cellulite-riddled ass by explaining that I listed to my iPod in the library while I'm working rather a lot, so there's a lot of 'furniture music'-- Satie, Philip Glass, what have you.
Here goes: be kind and/or offer suggestions. I do SO need your help:
1.) Knock 'em out - Lily Allen
2.) Sky Is Crying - Elmore James
3.) Fantaisie Sign - The Seatbelts
4.) Song of the Silent Age - David Bowie and Brian Eno
5.) Mariachi Gama
Erm... let's try again
1.) Woo Hoo - The 5678s (Don't judge me!!!)
2.) Copo Vazio - Gilberto Gil
3.) Koto - Yamato Ensemble (Japanese classical music)
4.) Mozart concerto for trumpet in D major - Wynton Marsalis
5.) Waltz for Bill Evans - Chick Corea
I'm guessing from the list that I should check out this Elliot Smith fellow, and Sufjan Stevens... and... who else, folks?

OK, this is fun and slightly terrifying at the same time. I fear that my pop music tastes are going to rear their ugly head. . .
1. "Prelude to a Kiss"--Miles Davis (and a vocalist I can't place at the moment)
2. "Misty Moutaintop"--Led Zepplin
3. "Above All"--Michael W. Smith (yes, I am a Christian)
4. "It Ain't Necessarily So"--Marcus Roberts

Not as bad as I imagined it might be. My jazz leanings shined through but none of the fluffy 80's/90's pop of which I am so fond.

I should preface this by saying that a lot of you might have Shuffles or the smaller Nanos, so you probably only download stuff onto your ipod that you really like or find interesting since there's not a ton of room. That makes your selections less embarrasing. I have a 60GB one however, and I pretty much have it filled with every song I've ever owned, gotten for free or was sent by someone else and there's a lot of crap I don't listen to (I just like the comfort of having my ipod full of music). With that said, this list makes me seem gayer than I am. My first five that come up are:
Caught Out There (Neptunes Remix) - Kelis
867-5309/Jimmy - Mark Weigle (gay Tommy Tutone cover)
I Found Love (Babie Love Mix) - Natalie Hagan
Get Your Way (Warehouse Version) - Jamie Cullum

I keep coming back to this thread to see what else y'all listen to--pretty amazing. And just for the hell of it,
1) so fresh, so clean--outkast
2) whatever lola wants--sarah vaughn (verve remix)
3) you are the one--elliott yamin
4) party--nelly furtado
5) sing for the moment--eminem

One - Metallica (I forgot I even downloaded this one. It always makes me think of the Beavis & Butthead in which they witness the awesomeness of the video)
Exit Music (For a Film) - Christopher O'Riley (more of a novelty than a great version, this is from a classical pianist's Radiohead covers album)
Not Addicted - The Streets
Rory Rides Me Raw - The Vaselines
I had to post again because I've actually made a concerted effort to shuffle all 5401 songs on my ipod for the past few days and only listen that way. It's actually been pretty damn awesome I must say - I fully reccomend the cleansing power of a good shuffle if this thread hasn't already convinced you.

This is all cool and great and everything, but something tells me (um, human nature, especially when it comes to music and lists) that over half of you sat down and came up with a list of 5 songs that would make you look like you've got the most bombastic, sick, clever, non-commerical, indie cred inducing list you could come up with. And you probably took like 2 hours to perfect the list. I'd join in, but I don't own an Ipod, so here is my 5 songs from a shuffled list of all my music on Yahoo Jukebox:
Sunbursts In - Eyeless in Gaza
Be Sweet - Afghan Whigs
Alone, Jealous, and Stoned - Secret Machines
Flesh and Bone - Bear McCreary (Battlestar Galactica score)
Obstacle 1 - Interpol

First, let me say that I abhor musical snobbery. Small minded bullsh*t. I had a chain-smoking Dinosaur Jr./Archers of Loaf-loving roommate in college who from high in her ivory tower of musical taste looked down on my unabashed love of mainstream, pop, and electronic music. Grrrrr. Still irks me to this day.
So throwing caution to the wind and looking like a lame-ass to Pajiba-ites:
1.Helena-My Chemical Romance
2.Do You Have a Little Time-Dido
