Sam Elliot will forever be the cowboy advising the Dude, the sage of the bowling alley, the voice you want in your head at a particularly low moment. So the man, the myth, the legend was perfectly cast in an enchanting and odd short film called “Limbo.”

Based on the graphic novella by Marian Churchland, “Limbo” follows a young man (Riverdale’s Raul Castillo) stranded in the middle of the desert. Having impulsively chucked his phone and run out of gas, he shoulders a satchel and wanders off. Lost not only in this wasteland but also in his thoughts of regret and romance turned sour, he stumbles across a magical dog, voiced by Sam Elliot. In the ways of fantastic quests, the dog offers a wish in exchange for the man’s unsolicited kindness. And here, he is offered an incredible chance to undo the actions that led him to this desolate place. But wishes can be tricky things.

We rarely write about short films here. But occasionally one comes along that’s too special to ignore. Boasting laurels from Fantasia Fest, Fantastic Fest and Toronto After Dark, “Limbo” has been stacking up praise, including Guillermo Del Toro’s calling it “excellent.”
