We’ve spent a lot of time at Pajiba HQ picking apart the many mysteries of Darren Aronofsky’s very mysterious new film mother!, which has so far revealed little in terms of plot, even after a couple of trailers and some stunning poster designs. The theories have ranged from Adam & Eve retelling to post-apocalyptic zombie horde tale, but the most recent poster may have given the game away.
Hmm, what does this remind us of?
Can’t quite put my finger on it. To be fair, the clues were there. The trailers talk constantly of giving and bringing life into the house Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem have made for themselves before those pesky uninvited guests trample over the new floors and possibly rot it with evil.
The theme of motherhood - yes, we knew the title was kind of obvious, but you only get to say that in hindsight - was driven home in the most recent clip, available through a bit of poster trickery and kaleidoscopic jiggling.
If you take the new poster into photoshop, and show only the BLUE alpha channel, you can see the hidden URL… https://t.co/gOSCXEBe7K pic.twitter.com/yqlCZxiyLJ

Go to youllneveranswerthedooragain.com and you’ll find a clip of Michelle Pfeiffer in prime Pfeiffer-ness, lording it up over Lawrence and chastising her for not wanting children, but then the clip takes a darker turn. Jiggle around further with that website and align the images just so, and you’ll see Lawrence is definitely in a motherly condition (credit to Bloody Disgusting for the image and detective work).
So is mother! another foray into horror for Aronofsky? How much have you missed seeing Michelle Pfeiffer on screen getting the love she deserves? Are you hoping there’s a twist to the Lawrence/Bardem relationship so it isn’t just another unacknowledged age-gap romance with a younger woman, where we’re all supposed to pretend that’s normal and not a symptom of shitty Hollywood sexism? Let us know in the comments.
