What is happening in this image? Why does a little white boy on a tricycle wearing an American flag mask instantly fill me with dread? And how is this not from the latest Purge movie? The good news is it is from a movie, not the latest news story about white supremacy running rampant in America. The not-so-good news? The press materials claim this movie is based on a “thousand percent a true story about how the quiet, all-American town of Salem absolutely lost its mind.”

Here’s the intriguing, disturbing, and confounding trailer for Assassination Nation.

Blood! Sex! Buzzwords! Frogs! But what the hell is going on?

Here’s the official plot synopsis for Assassination Nation:

High school senior Lily and her group of friends live in a haze of texts, posts, selfies and chats just like the rest of the world. So, when an anonymous hacker starts posting details from the private lives of everyone in their small town, the result is absolute madness leaving Lily and her friends questioning whether they’ll live through the night.

Written and directed by Sam Levinson, Assassination Nation seems to be a modern and wild re-imagining of the 1692 Salem witch trials. The film stars Odessa Young, Suki Waterhouse, Hari Nef, Abra, Anika Noni Rose, Maude Apatow, Bill SkarsgĂ„rd, Joel McHale, Bella Thorne, and Colman Domingo, who described it during its Sundance Film Festival bow as “a war on toxic masculinity, at all costs.”

You get a better sense of that in Assassination Nation’s Sundance teaser:

Okay, Assassination Nation, you’ve got our attention.

Assassination Nation hits theaters September 21st.
