13 Assassins Trailer: History, Politics, And A Healthy Dose Of Samurai Ass-Kicking

I think that many of us already know who Takashi Miike is, and we fear him. He’s responsible for some pretty outlandish, and frankly horrifying movies. He’s also an unbelievably talented film maker, which makes for a pretty compelling combination. He directed Audition (reviewed here), a film that you’re definitely never going to forget, as well as other twisted masterpieces like Ichi The Killer. Now, he’s going back to feudal Japan, for his samurai epic 13 Assassins, about a “group of assassins come together for a suicide mission to kill an evil lord.”

Check it:

I was lucky enough to catch the film at SXSW (reviewed here), and I won’t spoil anything other than to say that it’s an amazing, thoroughly satisfying film that you should absolutely see. It’s a story of history, politics, samurai and swordsmen. Watch the trailer. When it comes out, go see it.

That is all.

The man who made the greatest comedy/horror/musical film of all time can do no wrong in my eyes.

Looks epic!

It's actually the first movie in a long while that I've been pretty psyched to see.

Nice. Preview says it's already available on demand... I think I might just go and watch it right now!

Beautiful! My kind of movie: Asian sword play with not a huddled big cat or concealed giant reptile in sight.

Look, Zach Snyder, it's possible to create fantastic action films without slowing down every. Single. Shot.

I still haven't fully forgiven Miike for his absolutely craptastic remake of Youkai Daisensou, but maybe I'll just... give this one a shot anyway.

Indeed Robert, I wish I was a member of the Katakuri family.

I can't say I'd like to be a part of the Katakuri family, but that's the only one of his movies I don't love. I mean, I get it, I just don't care for it.

This looks like all kinds of radassitude, though.

It's supposed to be on demand everywhere, yet it is nowhere to be found on my TV! WHY ARE YOU PUNISHING ME, Cablevision?!?!

I read this yesterday, then read the Audition review, then watched that on Netflix last night.
I think the comments hyped the movie up for me a little too much, because when it ended, I actually said out loud "That was it?". Not that it wasn't good, but despite the fact that I rarely watch anything "twisted" like that, it really didn't freak me out at all.

That being said, this movie looks amazing, I'm gonna have to see if I can find it somewhere since people seem to be saying it's available on demand.
