Dear John: “After an interminable five weeks of studio movies, Dear John was a most unexpected surprise: It was a film. I would stop far short of calling it a good film, but it had the elements of one: It had actual performances, instead of line readings mixed with funny and/or serious faces; it had a story, instead of a high concept; and it had a director. An honest to God director.” - Dustin Rowles

The Road: “The problem with The Road is that Hillcoat, screenwriter Joe Penhill, and the Weinstein Company tried to produce the most faithful adaptation possible and, in doing so, made a mediocre film based on a mediocre book. After seeing No Country for Old Men (2007), I immediately went to the bookstore and picked up McCarthy’s Blood Meridian: Or the Evening Redness in the West and The Road. I read the latter novel first and found barren prose and a rather trite theme. The Road, both in its paper and celluloid form, is fundamentally a story about the love between a father and a son that flourishes despite raging cannibals and a whole cast of characters that do not carry the moral goodness of “the fire.” Quite simply, the story lacks the intellectual and moral depth that I found in McCarthy’s Blood Meridian (which, I must say, is not one of my favorite books in the world, either), leaving it rather dull and boring.” - Drew Morton

Also released this week: My Dog: An Unconditional Love Story, Mystery Team, Owl & The Sparrow, Rain Fall, Tell Tale

I couldn't disagree more with Drew when it comes to the book. Haven't seen the movie, but the book was pretty damn amazing in a 'destroy your will to live' sort of way.

It'd be nice in the new releases section if rather than highlighting the well known movies--movies you couldn't possibly miss noticing their release if you walk into even a drugstore, and instead maybe had some kind of coverage or highlights for the lesser known films. This is supposed to be a movie review site, and your dvd release lists just seem lazy.

just saying

I just picked up a copy of Mystery Team today because the trailer made me cackle out loud in my office. Plus it stars Donald Glover, who is easily my favorite Community cast member. Will you guys be reviewing it?

You forgot to mention Criterion's Bluray release of By Brakhage, the anthology of Stan Brakhage docs/experiments. My copy should be in just in time for the long weekend! WOOHOO!

It takes a cold, dead person not to stir up some emotions when reading The Road.

Troy is the secret weapon they released from the dumb jock routine. When he gave that 'interview' in the Goodfellas spoof, I thought, 'This is the guy!'

Very good thinking. I???ê?èm curious to assume what type of impact this would have globally? Sometimes people get a bit upset with global expansion. I???ê?èll check back to determine what you've to say.
