This is amusing — even the folks responsible for assigning release dates to DVDs were smart enough to avoid the wake of The Dark Knight, presumably knowing that few people were going to plant their asses on the couch when Batman was on the big screen. So, there’s only one major new release. And it’s mediocre, at best. I do wonder, though, since I stopped reading The Sports Guy around the time the Patriots won their last Super Bowl and he’d made his 4,987th “Beverly Hills 90210” allusion: Has Bill Simmons at least added 21 to his arsenal of poker movie references? And by arsenal, I mean Rounders.

Ah, here it is.

21: Dan was flabbergasted with the way the filmmakers took an interesting story about card counters screwing Vegas and blanding the hell out of it. He writes, “I mean, it’s based, however loosely, on things that really happened at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where a long-running group of current and former students pooled their mental firepower in a team-based ploy to count cards at blackjack. And they won. A lot. How do you make that boring? I can do nothing else but tip my hat to screenwriters Peter Steinfeld and Allan Loeb, who have taken a unique story and beaten it until it fit easily into a boring and predictable mold. But they also share the blame with director Robert Luketic, best known for Legally Blonde and Win a Date With Tad Hamilton! and whose marginal talents as a romantic comedy helmer melt away completely when faced with anything resembling drama, suspense, or characterization. Everything about 21 is a little too easy, even the ungainly double-crosses and change-ups that are tacked onto the screenplay as it makes its labored way across the finish line.”

Also, FYI: “Spaced: The Complete Series” also hits shelves today.

Stick around for another hour, folks. We got something good brewing. In the meantime, here’s a fun fact, and possible topic of conversation to get you through the next 60 minutes: At one point, The Dark Knight was in production under the fake working title, Rory’s First Kiss. Why that title?

Has Bill Simmons at least added 21 to his arsenal of poker movie references?

Not yet. I think that he is anticipating the new 90210.

One hour? Why not now?

The title is a Gilmore Girls reference? I have no idea.

Posted by: Melody at July 22, 2008 12:05 PM

Rory is the name of Nolan's kid.

Posted by: Some Guy at July 22, 2008 12:13 PM

Why that title?

I have no idea. Why don't you tell me?

Posted by: the_wakeful at July 22, 2008 12:14 PM

Shroud of secrecy?

Or a subplot concerning a fast-talking flighty mom and her fast-talking bookworm daughter having an extended birds and bees conversation?

Posted by: artificialsweet at July 22, 2008 12:15 PM

I honestly thought the movie wasn't that bad. The book was much better, yes, but the film was just as good as any other "gambling" movie. Kevin Spacey was excellent as usual - not as good as he was in "Pay it Forward", but good nevertheless.

I knew there was some super secret shady Pajiba business afoot and I think I know what it is. Also, I got to say 'afoot'.

Posted by: jM at July 22, 2008 12:18 PM

Hee hee. Conrad, Spacey was never better than he was in Pay it Forward.

Oh god, it actually hurt to type that.

If anyone needs a great movie to watch, I highly recommend In Bruges. I just saw it and was completely floored by how funny and violent and well acted it was.

Pajiba shadiness afoot (haha, jM...afoot, afoot, afoot)?

It's like a puzzle, wrapped in an enigma, and then deep-fried in cluelessness.

If "Operation Blue Nun" is about to commence in an hour, I suggest you get anything you hold valuable out of your home, Conrad, 'cause we're burning that bitch down...

That's it right? That's what the hour wait is for? Blue Nun, right? Can we wait until after lunch? I've got a few things to wrap up here a work and I'm not sure I can... JUST WAIT FOR ME! I KNOW WHERE HE LIVES! The spare key's under the dopey turtle sculpture in the garden... There's a box of vintage He-Man toys under the stairs that I want, but otherwise - gas can's in the carhole - key code is #22487.

21 sucked wrinkly ones...

Some Guy got it right... Rory is the name of Christopher Nolan's child.

They even had fake "RFK" casting call sheets made and everything...

I tried seeing Batman at the Imax last night and found out it is sold out for the rest of the MONTH!

Yes, people in Minnesota are batty for Batman.

Posted by: SR at July 22, 2008 12:27 PM

If Christopher Nolan were my dad, I don't think I'd be so crazy about him using my name + "first kiss" as the fake-out title for his giant blockbuster movie. Then again, he's Christopher Nolan, so he gets an automatic pass in my mind.

Also, Spaced on DVD-- finally! Whenever my copy arrives in the mail, I will be celebrating by holing up in my house for a joy-filled marathon. Now I just need some jaffa cakes and a disco ball made out of BacoFoil.

Hee, mocking the Sports Douche never gets old.

It's like a puzzle, wrapped in an enigma, and then deep-fried in cluelessness.

But you have to say that as Joe Pesci in a wig.

But guys, my birthday's in November, you're early with the surprise party!

Posted by: Jay at July 22, 2008 1:03 PM

Just bought my copy of Spaced twenty minutes ago! Woot.

Posted by: twig at July 22, 2008 1:31 PM

I'm spending my afternoon in this comment thread. It's not as sticky as the other one and there are fewer fluids on the floor.

Posted by: PissBoy at July 22, 2008 2:12 PM

I don't know, PB, my sandals are sticking to something in here.

T-minus two and half hours till I can leave and see the Dark Knight! Stupid work.

Posted by: Julie at July 22, 2008 2:24 PM

So, I am so glad Spaced was released on DVD because it gave the BBC America thingy on cable an excuse to introduce me to this series. Brilliant!
Side Note: Does Simon Pegg look like a hamster when he's got a little beard like that and is a little scruffy. I keep thinking hamster but I'm not entirely sure why.

Posted by: Rex at July 22, 2008 10:20 PM

I second the In Bruges recommendation. It totally blew my mind.

Posted by: Cait at July 22, 2008 11:24 PM

I thought rory was the name of bale's kid? not nolans

Posted by: tj at July 22, 2008 11:56 PM

Nah, tj, Bale's kid's name is Emaline. At least, I think that's her name. I'm not sure that he's ever actually confirmed that.

(/deactivating Bale fangirl mode in T-minus one second)

Holyjesussweetmotherofmaryfuckinggod!!!!!!

Spaced the complete series on DVD...

My panties just got moist

Hells to the yes on In Bruges. Netflixed it and watched it Friday and loved the crap out of it. I said something similar in the Pajiba review a few months back, but now I see for myself and know: Colin has finally proven worthy of my undying love for him.

I've got Cassandra's Dream on the way next. Here's hoping he keeps it up.
