What Is Your Theme Song?

An Evening Comment Diversion / Dustin Rowles

Comment Diversions | July 20, 2009 | Comments (162)

I’m fairly certain we’ve done a comment diversion similar, but not quite the same, as this one, suggested by Melissa. But, it’s a fun idea, so there’s no harm in doing a variation. It was inspired by an ice-breaker foisted upon her by a professor back in college. “Imagine they’re filming a movie of your life. During the opening credits, while there’s a shot of you walking down the street, what song would be playing? In other words, what is your theme song?”

Melissa’s theme song: “Miniature Disasters,” by KT Tunstall.

And as for me, I’d probably go with “My Philosophy,” by Ben Folds Five.

How about you?

Either that or Poison by Bel Biv Devoe. Depends on how I'm feeling.

One Angry Dwarf by Ben Folds Five.
Or Jenny Says by Cowboy Mouth, just for the opening riff and the chorus.

I have always had a vision of a movie scene of me strutting down the street Saturday Night Fever style to "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel. Its kind of odd because I always hated Genesis, but I loves me some solo Gabriel.

Then again, perhaps "Master of Puppets" by Metallica.
Guess it depends on the day.

Because every (half) black hero needs a theme song.

Posted by: TK at July 20, 2009 9:20 PM

I guess that depends on whether they're filming the life I actually lead or the life I like to pretend I lead.

For the first, it's "Everyday I Have The Blues" by Joe Williams. For the second, it's "Here I Come" by the Roots.

"People Ain't No Good"- Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

I am so damn redundant.

'im shipping up to boston' - dropkick murphys

i used to sing 'nobodys girl' by michelle wright when i was younger like it was my theme song...now it rings a little too true, which is why im angry, hence the dropkick murphys.

I'm gonna have to go with "People are Strange" by The Doors. Ironically they didn't have a bass player and I play the bass, but whatever. (wait, is that ironic or am I just being stupid? I can never tell anymore)

Posted by: the_wakeful at July 20, 2009 9:23 PM

Ambrosia-"How much I feel."

I swear to god that song takes me back to a time when I was innocent and uncorrupted. Now I’m a long way from innocent and an even farther way from uncorrupted.

On good days, Iggy Pop's The Passenger.

On bad days, Bowie's Always Crashing In The Same Car.

A lot of the time I feel it should be 'Miss Halfway' by Anya Marina, because I am the most consistently average person in the world, or so it feels. Otherwise, maybe 'Steer' by Missy Higgins or 'Life is Short' by Butterfly Boucher.

Because Fishbone was actually in the movie, performing his themesong live!

Posted by: TK at July 20, 2009 9:42 PM

Actually, while I'd love for it to be "Wake Up" by the Arcade Fire, some jackass studio producer would do what every movie does and make it some fucking tuba music. "Haha, fat people must always be accompanied by music that sounds like they're shatting themselves with every step! Oh, it's okay, they're jolly folk!"

Basically what I'm saying is, fuck the first Superman movie.

Averred metalhead though I am, on the odd occasion this question comes up I always think of 'History Of A Boring Town' by Less Than Jake. The lyrics could have been written with my hometown of Darlaston (in which I still live) in mind.

Well, since it's my suggestion, y'all know my answer already. But I will say that in college I chose "Supervixen" by Garbage, because I'd feel badass strutting to that song.

For the actual walk? Eerie that I've always had one in mind - I always wear heels and I stumble a bit so: 'Heartache Tonight' by the Eagles. The intro is exactly how I walk.

If we're talking about suitable for my 'story' I'm inclined to go with 'Hang on Sloopy', The McCoys or if I'm being really uncharitable with myself, 'Like A Rollin' Stone', Dylan.

Heehee - 'Mama told me not to come', Three Dog Night.

Posted by: Zabe at July 20, 2009 11:20 PM

Radiohead - There There (The Boney King of Nowhere). It'd have to be playing on the deserted outskirts of a big city that's seen better days. Poorly lit, flickering streetlights, with a steady drizzle. I'd probably have to have a gun in my hand...

Lye Lovett - L.A. County. More than likely walking on the dusty side of a two-lane highway just as the sun's coming up. The lyrics have jack shit to do with anything pertaining to me, but it's always seemed like a good intro song. Again, for reasons unknown, I'd probably have to be carrying a firearm. And be decked out in denim.

Beack - Nicotine & Gravy. Pacing back and forth outside a bus depot in middle America. More than likely, it'd be late September (Indian Summer), around four-thirty in the afternoon. And although it pains me to say so, I'd need to have an Adidas duffel bag with a severed human head and fifteen thousand dollars in casino chips. Preferably a casino run by Native Americans. Wendel would have a black eye.

That's pretty much it...

Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler) by Marvin Gaye.

The Beast - Concrete Blonde
Half the man I used to be - Nirvana
Dear God - XTC

"Hunter" by Dido is always the first thing that comes to mind.

"Under Pressure" -- Queen and David Bowie

Does Hugh Grant sing? He narrates my life like the Wonder Years...

Say it Aint So - Weezer

Sinnerman, Nina Simone
Lust for Life, Iggy Pop

I'm not actually much of a sinner, and I'm definitely not a man. But that clapping instrumental in the middle always makes me want to be out in the world doing things.

I do have a lust for life.

Late and wrong am I. Since I'm old, we go old school. It has to be "Peace of Mind" by Boston. If I was a guy, I'd have to say "Ordinary Man" by Triumph.

Posted by: slower lower at July 21, 2009 11:26 AM

Boy, has that thing changed over the years. It bounced from "Won't Get Fooled Again" to "These Days" to "I Am a Patriot" to...lord knows how many changes it's gone through.
Today, I'm not even sure I have one. If I have to pick, it would be "Handlebars", by Flobots. I don't listen to the radio, so I haven't gotten sick of it like the rest of the world.

Posted by: Jim Doggie at July 21, 2009 11:29 AM

"Cherry Lips" by Garbage

It's also great for jogging.

Posted by: Kitty X at July 21, 2009 12:07 PM

Slower Lower, top notch on Ordinary Man, that is fantastic...few would confess any knowledge of the Rock-n-Roll Machine called Triumph. Now that I am not alone, almost anything off of Thunder 7 is good too.

Posted by: richmac at July 21, 2009 12:18 PM

Hmm...

"Layla - Piano Exit" - Derrick and the Dominos. I was transfixed by the longshot in "Goodfellas" that uses this music and...well it's kinda stuck with me ever since.

"It Don't Come Easy" - Ringo Starr. Time for a little honesty; I went through three major surgeries by the time I was 11 years old. When other 13 year old boys were growing hair and developing, I was still physically catching up. While I seem to have traded physical prowess for mental agility, school work was never easy for me either. Hence, "it don't come easy".

"My Secret Identity" - Ookla The Mok. For the inclinded, Ookla makes some of the best geek rock out there. "My Secret Identity" hit pretty close to home.

Thunderstruck by AC/DC because I'm 5'0 and totally badass.

Oh, okay. Guess I'm wrong then.

"Ralph Wiggum" - Bloodhound Gang

I'm a pop sensation.

Heaven knows I'm miserable now - The Smiths

Because I am a moody bitch.

@Rykker

Oh, okay. Guess I'm wrong then.

Yes. Yes, you are. And a bit of a wanker, too. Because, seriously? 'Frightening'? Oh, no! There are people out there who identify strongly with pieces of music, feeling that they relate to their own lives! So much so that they can pick a single track to be the theme song in a completely hypothetical movie about themselves for the purposes of a fun but ultimately meaningless diversion on a website! Horrors! Run for the hills! And the children? Won't someone please think of the children?!

Posted by: lareigna at July 21, 2009 12:57 PM

All My Little Words - the Magnetic Fields

But only because Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now is so popular.
:D

I saw Triumph in a little theater in Albany in the early 80's, richmac. Holy shit, Ordinary Man and Magic Power brought down the house. I wore that cassete tape out. It was my first real concert. Very few have compared to it.

If I only had a brain - Abbey Lincoln

It's really more of an ironic choice since I'll be Maples, PhD in 2 weeks. I like to think that my journey through academics is just a step in my lifetime pursuit of knowledge. If you listen to the lyrics you can see that the Scarecrow wants wisdom, not just a diploma.

Posted by: Maples at July 21, 2009 2:11 PM

Wild by Poe. All 9 minutes of it. It takes me a very long time to enter a room.

Posted by: Ryan at July 21, 2009 2:14 PM

The Reason by Hoobastank.

"I'm not a perfect person/there's many things I wish I didn't do/But I continue learning.."

I know it's kinda "pop tuney" but the whole song fits.

That or Shamrocks & Shenanigans by House of Pain. Yeah, I'm THAT Guinness swillin', Boondock Saints watchin', corned beef and cabbage if I'm gonna manage mick mfer...

Posted by: Antietam at July 21, 2009 2:17 PM

"Long Way Down" by Michael Penn. Fantastic song - sad and sarcastic. While I'm not terribly melancholic, the song just seems to fit the way I feel most days.

"Oh man, look what the cat drug in..."

"Beautiful World" -- Colin Hay

Though sometimes it really is "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road" -- Loudon Wainwright III

Posted by: pereka at July 21, 2009 2:53 PM

"Tired Wings" and "Nobody Said It Was Easy" by the Four Horseman are currently my theme songs for 2009, aka The Year of the Suck:

"Sometimes you gotta let your feelings show
Sometimes you gotta let those cold winds blow
Whose gonna pay the piper for the song he sings?
And who's gonna take some pity on my lonely tired wings??"

Posted by: maylai at July 21, 2009 3:27 PM

"Gypsy"- Fleetwood Mac and "Against the Wind"- Bob Seger.

I think it's cheating to have two theme songs but I can't choose between them and never will!

Posted by: tinmo at July 21, 2009 3:37 PM

If I had to choose one (there's probably about 5 for me) then it'd be:

Red House Painters - "Grace Cathedral Park"

Posted by: JapJay at July 21, 2009 3:53 PM

"That's The Way Of The World"- Earth,Wind & Fire.

Posted by: TheBlackMenace at July 21, 2009 4:38 PM

the beatles. day tripper.

my brother is here visiting...his theme song is:
the darkness. i believe in a thing called love.

Posted by: maxpurr9 at July 21, 2009 4:39 PM

Slower lower, I did not see them until the Sport of Kings tour and they were already starting to fracture. It was still a great show..but not as intimate as you were able to see.

Posted by: richmac at July 21, 2009 5:06 PM

The piano riffs from Sinnerman. Because it's instrumental, catchy, and on my signature instrument. Who needs lyrics when the music alone can capture and set the mood so perfectly?

(Runners-up: Gabriel's Oboe, Bach Street Prelude, or the Coach's Corner theme song)

Posted by: lordhelmet at July 21, 2009 5:15 PM

Closer - NIN

Posted by: erika at July 21, 2009 6:42 PM

"There she goes" - The La's

Posted by: Sian at July 22, 2009 12:20 AM

I'm late to the party but it'd have to be "If I Ever Leave this World Alive" by Flogging Molly as the opening mood setter.

Of course the dark montage of drinking in the middle would need to be set to "I See a Darkness" by Johnny Cash.

The sinking lower and lower while searching for a purpose should be set to "Learning How to Smile" by Everclear.

After I ride a nuke down out of the bomber, it should fade to black with "Bird on a Wire" by Leonard Cohen.
