Three Songs and a Lyric

An Afternoon Comment Diversion / Dustin Rowles

Comment Diversions | October 18, 2007 | Comments (243)

All right, we haven’t done a music diversion in a while, so let’s go back to your music collection today and discuss something we’ve all, at the very least, thought about a time or two in our lives. First, what’s your ideal wedding song, either the one you played at your wedding, or the one you’d want to play at your wedding [and speaking of weddings, I hope I’m not talking out of turn here, but our own illustrious Ranylt Richildis is getting hitched this weekend, selfishly disregarding the huge slate of new releases on Friday in favor of wedded bliss. Where are your priorities, Ms. Richildis? (and many, many congrats, by the by)]. Second, you’re dead. Welcome to the afterlife. What song would you want played at your funeral service? Third, you’re the best relief pitcher in the majors (i.e., you’re not Eric Gagne). It’s the bottom of the ninth and you’re about to run out of the bullpen. What’s your anthem? And finally, a suggestion from reader Cindy: What’s your favorite song lyric?

I’ll get us started:

1. Wedding Song: “The Luckiest” Ben Folds (hey! It was at least a year before it was a cliché).
2. Funeral Song: “My Telly’s Gone Bung” by Crowded House.
3. Bullpen Song: “My Ass is on Fire,” by Mr. Bungle.
4. Favorite song lyrics: “Battered Old Bird,” by Elvis Costello.

Comments

1. Wedding Song:
My boyfriend/future husband may protest, but whatever--"Come What May" from Moulin Rouge.

2. Funeral Song: "Satisfied Mind"--the Jeff Buckley version.

3. Bullpen Song: "'Til I Collapse" by Eminem. Can't tell you how many times I played this damn song before an exam.

4. Favorite song lyrics: "Lover you should've come over" by Jeff Buckley or "I'm Your Man" by Leonard Cohen, both for very different reasons.

(Congrats Ranylt!!)

2. "Angel Band" by the Stanley Brothers
3. "She's My Man" by the Scissor Sisters
4. a. "And when you wake up in the morning with your head on fire and your eyes too bloody to see, you can cry in your coffee but don't come bitchin' to me.
b. "Give me peace, love, and a hard cock."

Funeral Song: The Way I Feel Inside by The Zombies
Bullpen Song: Killer Queen by Queen
Favorite Lyrics: I'm Going Down by Rose Royce

Posted by: Catherine at October 18, 2007 2:59 PM

1. Wedding: "I Wanna be your Boyfriend" - Ramones

2. Funeral: the hidden track at the end of "Howl" by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (don't know what it's called - it's beautiful)

3. Bullpen: "Honeybucket" - Melvins

4. Lyrics: tough one. I guess I'll go with "Gouge Away" by the Pixies, which is probably sacrilegious of me

Posted by: Mattfactor at October 18, 2007 3:00 PM

EDIT: favorite lyrics = Brian Wilson, Love and Mercy

Posted by: Catherine at October 18, 2007 3:01 PM

Wedding Song: I would have chosen In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel, but my mother in law chose the song for us, which was We've Only Just Begun by the Carpenters. I guess that's what happens when you elope and have the reception two months later

Funeral Song: Beyond The Sea by Bobby Darin

Bullpen Song: Oh, I don't know. Insert generic anthem song here.

Favorite Lyrics: Birdhouse In Your Soul by TMBG. What a fun song to sing.

Posted by: katy at October 18, 2007 3:04 PM

Wedding: Wonderful Tonight-Eric Clapton; beautiful song, can't help it
Funeral: Put Me in Coach- John Fogarty; I just have a bizzare love of that song
Bullpen Song: Enter Sandman.....Sorry Mo Riv, greatest bullpen song in the game
Favorite Lyric: Cat's and the Cradle- Harry Chapin

1. Bright Eyes, "First Day of My Life" - we just got married on Friday, and this was a hit.

2. Johnny Cash, "Sunday Morning Coming Down."

3. Smashing Pumpkins, "Tales of a Scorched Earth."

4. Bob Dylan, "Desolation Row."

Posted by: Bullfrog at October 18, 2007 3:05 PM

Wedding song (this is played after we've been announced and make our exit): Fleetwood Mac, Say You Love Me. It's just so happy and joyful and I love the idea of turning around to face the crowd, grinning, as Christine's piano starts up.

Funeral Song: Fleetwood Mac, Gypsy. It's just...my song. You know, the song that you friends text you about from the bar and say, "I heard Gypsy and thought of you!" Or the song you play on the jukebox and then run into someone a couple of seconds later who says, "I knew you were here as soon as I heard Gypsy."

Anthem: That's a hard one. I'll have to come back to it.

Favorite song lyric: Hard to choose, of course. But I'll do the two that immediately came to mind, you're always supposed to go with your first instinct, right?

Crosby, Stills, and Nash, from Southern Cross:

"So we we cheated and we lied, and we tested. And we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do. You will survive bein' bested...somebody fine will come along, make me forget about lovin' you..."

And of course, "She is all that I have left, and music is her name..."

And my favorite fun line comes from Mellencamp:

Some people
say I'm obnoxious and lazy
I'm uneducated, my opinion means nothin'!
But I know
I'm a real good dancer...

Doesn't quite have the same effect on paper. But way fun to sing drunkenly at the top of your lungs.

Posted by: tinmo at October 18, 2007 3:08 PM

1. Wedding: "I'll Be Your Mirror" by Velvet Underground (although a version that Lou sings on his own is pretty good too)
2. Funeral: "She Belongs to Me" by Bob Dylan
3. Bullpen: "Use It" by The New Pornographers
4. Lyrics: "Fuck and Run" by Liz Phair

for now, at least...

Posted by: ewg at October 18, 2007 3:08 PM

1. Wedding - "Oh My Love" by John Lennon

2. Funeral - for modesty's sake I guess I'll have to say "Our Time" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. But to paraphrase High Fidelity, I've always imagined some beautiful, teary-eyed man would insist on playing "Days" by the Kinks...but I can't imagine who it would be.

3. Bullpen: This is a tough one. Possibly "Clash City Rockers"?

4. Favorite lyrics: "Waterloo Sunset." Ray Davies writes the songs that break my heart.

Posted by: Meg at October 18, 2007 3:09 PM

Ah, how I enjoy a good music comment diversion.

1. Wedding Song: oh, why not a classic: either
How Sweet It Is - James Taylor
OR
Please Be Kind - Jane Monheit

2. Funeral Song:
Light of The Moon - Joel Plaskett Emergency Daughter - Loudon Wainwright III

3. Bullpen Song:
Footloose - Kenny Loggins

4. Favorite Song Lyrics:
La Tristesse Durera - Manic Street Preachers

I basically love the lyrics to any MSP song, but that would be my favorite.

Posted by: citizen_cris at October 18, 2007 3:09 PM

1. Wedding Song: "Here and Now" by Luther Vandross. Yes, I'm a sucker for his voice.

2. Funeral: Wow. Haven't thought of this one. Probably something like "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey just so people will crack up.

3. Bullpen: "What's my Name" by DMX, or anything by Queen. I would want the crowd to be extremely riled up.

4. Song Lyric: "In Time" by Zero 7.

Posted by: Brie at October 18, 2007 3:09 PM

1. Wedding Song - I've Got You Under My Skin (Frank Sinatra style). . .this was the perfect song for us at our wedding.

2. Funeral - I'm religious so for me it would have to be the song, "Tu Has Venido a la Orilla". It just breaks me up every time I sing or hear it because it is so incredibly comforting. We sang it frequently in the church we belonged to in Woodside, NY. It should be sung in both Spanish and English at my funeral, though the original Spanish is much lovelier.

3. Bullpen song - Umm, never tried to imagine this and am not remotely athletic so this one is tough. The only thing I can think of is "We Will Rock You". Seems like it would get the crowd pumped which would help my adrenaline get going.

4. "Belong Where I Am" by Kurt Elling
I hear the woman like a song / dancing down a long corridor
Reminding me I belong where I am

I see the singing in the rain/ the rhythm at my windowpane
Reminding me I belong where I am

There is a light in the silence of loving things
And when I look in my baby's hopeful eyes
It's like the sound just before every morning horizon
Light comes to life

It's like a mem'ry of loving sound / turning me upside down
Keeping my two feet firmly planted on the ground
Reminding me I belong where I am

Posted by: prairiegirl at October 18, 2007 3:12 PM

It's not as much fun when people say just the name of the song and not the actual lyrics. I want to hear everyone's lyric choices word for word, pretty please?

Posted by: tinmo at October 18, 2007 3:14 PM

1. Wedding Song: Pacheval's Canon. I walked down the aisle to that one.
2. Funeral Song: "Take this job and shove it," Johnny Paycheck.
3. Bullpen Song: (What's a bullpen? No seriously, I have no idea what this is.)
4. Favorite song lyrics: The feminist in me, hates me, but "If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife."

Posted by: BWeaves at October 18, 2007 3:16 PM

I just have to point out that citizen_cris chose "Footloose" as his/her bullpen song. Not only is this the best decision ever, I suggest that he/she win a gold star.

citizen_cris, I will attend your baseball game any day.

Posted by: David at October 18, 2007 3:16 PM

1. Wedding song: "Your Eyes," Peter Gabriel. I don't care if it's cliche or that some of the lyrics aren't ideal, I adore this song.

2. Funeral song: "Soul Meets Body," Death Cab for Cutie. It's one of my favorite songs, and one that would remind my friends of me, which would induce tears for which I would mock them mercilessly down in hell (I know where I'm going).

3. Bullpen song: "Night on Bald Mountain"...I think it has pants wetting qualities that could damage the pitcher's psyche.

4. Favorite lyrics: "Not About Love," Fiona Apple. "last night's phrases, sick with lack of basis, are still writhing on my floor...This is not about love. 'Cause I am not in love. In fact I can't stop falling out" Gorgeous.

Posted by: Julie at October 18, 2007 3:17 PM

3. "Heaven Scent" - John Digweed/ Bedrock
4. "Show me some love, strip off your clothes, and take off your socks" - Missy Elliott

Posted by: Agent Scully at October 18, 2007 3:21 PM

Wedding Song: I'll Be Hard to Handle - the Ella Fitzgerald version or When I'm Sixty-Four - The Beatles

Funeral Song: Abbey Road Medley - The Beatles. Everyone will just have to sit quietly for 15 minutes. Or We Like to Party - The Venga Boys.

Favorite Lyrics: "And you love me till my heart stops/Love me till I'm dead..." Talking Heads This Must Be The Place

Posted by: allyson at October 18, 2007 3:22 PM

I'm actually amazed at the number of couples who chose James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" as their wedding song. I read a survey where it was the top wedding song about a year ago. I mean really, it's about a man who sees his ex girlfriend with another man and knows he's never going to be with her. I don't get it.

Posted by: BWeaves at October 18, 2007 3:23 PM

I second David's vote for Footloose as an awesome bullpen choice. I will now take it as my own. Completely unironically. I unabashedly love this song and completely dork out with dancing and singing when I hear it. The opening guitar riff alone is enough to lift my mood immediately. This will also be played at my wedding reception. Good call.

Wanted to clarify one thing:
- The song I walked down the aisle to was "Apotheosis" from Tschaikovsky's "Sleeping Beauty" (absolutely gorgeous if you have never heard it).
- Our walk down the aisle as husband and wife was, "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's 9th Symphony.
- Our first dance was to "I've Got You Under My Skin".

I second tinmo on writing out lyrics, please.

1. Wedding song - "Moon River," although I know the S. O. would prefer Brad Fiedel's "Come to Me" the theme from Fright Night (Instrumental) (no really. It's his favorite song ever.)
2. Funeral Song - "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg." Hopefully it will rain during my funeral.
3. Bullpen Song - "My Heart Will Go on" because it's incongruous and such a moment calls for major cheese.
4. I am really feeling Dylan's "Master's of War" lately, also very fond of the lyrics for "Blue" (from the end of CB. I am in a very CB mood lately) and also the bits of "Memory" that are actually stolen from T. S. Eliot poems, although that's probably cheating.

Wedding Song - I've Got the World on a String - Frank Sinatra. An boyfriend and I once made a list of songs not to have played at your wedding such as the Sid Vicious version of My Way

I am married and, like thousands before us, we danced to At Last by Etta James. WIMPS!

Funeral Song - I Don't Want to Live on the Moon sung by Jim Henson as Ernie

Bullpen Song - American Woman by The Guess Who OR Love Rears Its Ugly Head by Living Color, but the latter is more my "perform (well) in a stadium song"

Lyrics - Natalie Merchant - Life Is Sweet

2. funeral song - 'on eagle's wings,' just like for the 'makes me tear up' comment diversion. it still does, almost fifteen years after my dad's funeral.
3. bullpen song - 'london's burning,' the clash. or just about anything else from that first album.
4. lyrics - can't think of any offhand...sorry.

Wedding: I Love You by Sarah McLachlan
Funeral: Hallelujah by Rufus Wainwright or Breathe Me by SiA(It's hard to pick one!)
Bullpen Song: Benny and the Jets by Elton John
Lyric: "What Have I become, My Sweetest Friend? Everyone I know Goes Away in the End." -Hurt by Johnny Cash(Actually, this could be at my funeral too.)

Apologies--some sort of server issue to I of course tried to repost and there are now multiple copies of my second comment. Idiot me.

Wedding:"Let's Stay Together" by Al Green
Funeral:"Be with me, Lord"-old Southern Gospel hymn, very sentimental favorite
Bullpen: I have no idea. Maybe "We Will Rock You"
Lyric:"Better Place to Be" by Harry Chapin
"If you want me to go with you
Well that's all right with me,
'Cause I think I'm going no where
And anywhere's a better place to be." Tears me up every time I here it.

Posted by: rlr260 at October 18, 2007 3:32 PM

1. Wedding Song: "Drift Away" by Dobie Gray (not the shitty new version by whothehellever, the original--this was our actual first dance song)

2. Funeral Song: the Ani DiFranco version of "Amazing Grace," or "Love is Blindness" by Cassandra Wilson

3. Bullpen Song: "Bidibodi Bidibou" (yes, the one from Super Troopers) by Bubbles--hey, it's my pretending-I'm-in-a-Porche-going-150-on-the-Autobahn song

4. Favorite song lyrics: "Regular Guy" by Bif Naked. It's just fun. Shut up! Stop laughing at me!

Posted by: AnnArrogance at October 18, 2007 3:33 PM

Wedding Song: 13 by Big Star ("Won't you let me walk you home from school..." didn't sound dirty since I'm older than my husband).

Funeral Song: "The Good Life" Weezer (I'm not into funerals)

Bullpen song: "So Fearless" The Bravery

Favorite lyrics: Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe"

2. Funeral Song-About a Girl-Nirvana
3. Bullpen -cheesy yes but Wind It Up-Gwen Stefani
4. Favorite Lyrics-Yellow-Coldplay

Posted by: lyricalcatt at October 18, 2007 3:35 PM

1. Wedding Song: "Something" by The Beatles would have been lovely, but the song that the hubby and I actually equate with the wedding is "Volcano" by Jimmy Buffet. We were married in Vegas and the reception was at Margaritaville. There ya' go.
2. Funeral Song: "Yellow Ledbetter" by Pearl Jam. I don't know why other than some people say that song reminds them of me and it sounds melancholy.
3. Bullpen Song: "B.O.B." by Outkast. I have to shake my ass everytime I hear that song. Energizing!
4. Favorite song lyrics: I love the lyrics in "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" by The Darkness. 'I wanna kiss you every minute, every hour, every daaaay! You got me in a spin but everything is a-okaaaayy! Touchin' yoooooouuu! Touchin' meeeee.'

Henry:

We're planning my best friend's wedding right now and she wants to dance to At Last. I know it is a gorgeous song, but...no. I am going to try to talk her out of it. I'm the last person who would ever shun something because it was too popular or overused- if you like it you like it- but one of the main themes we're going for in the wedding is making it completely unique and "her." The music is one of the most important, if not THE most important element of this wedding and I just dont want anything for her that's been done a thousand times before.

Oh, and I think I came up with my own "Bullpen" song. Tom Petty, Runnin' Down a Dream. It's those opening guitar riffs that always get me.

Posted by: tinmo at October 18, 2007 3:38 PM

Went back and since y'all wanted some lyrics--

Jeff Buckley's "Lover you should have come over"--some good lines--
It's never over/my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It's never over/all my riches for her smile when I slept so soft against her
It's never over/all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It's never over/she is a tear that hangs inside my soul forever...

etc...

and Cohen's "I'm your man"
The moon's too bright/the chain's too tight/the beast won't fall asleep
I've been running through these promises to you that I've made and could not keep
But a man never got a woman back/not by begging on his knees
I'd crawl to you baby and I'd fall at your feet
I'd howl at your beauty like a dog in heat
I'd claw at your heart and I'd tear at your sheet, I'd say please...I'm your man...

"Take this time
Just hang around awhile
Like to sit this silent moment out
I don't wanna lose or let you down
Time's just gonna change itself around."

That part gets me every time.

wedding: "If I ain't got you" the alicia keyes & usher version only released in the UK. their voices are perfect on this song and the first time I heard it I had to pull over to the side of the road and call my fiance, telling him I'd found "our song."

funeral: "Another one bites the dust"-Queen

bullpen: "Lose Yourself"-eminem or "drrrty"-Christina Aguilera, two random songs that always get me amped up.

for tinmo:
"Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul" - Masters of War

"Everything is clearer now
Life is just a dream you know
That's never ending
I'm ascending" - Blue, I'm not evil enough to post it all, but I really like the song as a whole (there's a great live version on youtube)

Wedding: "Naive Melody" by Talking Heads. It makes me feel blissfully in love.

Funeral: "Wrapped in Grey" by XTC, as a heartfelt message to all my survivors. Andy Partridge is brilliant.

Bullpen: "Pressure Drop" as performed by the Clash. It's currently being used in a car commercial. I fucking hate that.

Favorite lyrics? Right now it's "Lip Service," Elvis Costello; in particular the line, "Don't act like you're above me--just look at your shoes."

(Guess my age! Go on, guess!)

wedding: anything by richard buckner. you can't understand a damn word he sings, but his voice...dear god.
funeral: "free falling" by tom petty
bullpen: "bohemian rhapsody" by queen
lyrics: currently, i'm obsessed with anything by okkrevil river, but especially "our life is not a movie or maybe":
"it's just a life story, so there's no climax."
beautiful!

Wedding Song: "Naive Melody" Talking Heads
Funeral Song: "Angel Band" (performed by AKUS) & Get Up Offa That Thing (James Brown)

Wedding: "What a difference a day made," Dinah Washington
Funeral: "I'll be seeing you," Frank Sinatra
Bullpen: "Highway to Hell," ACDC
Lyrics: "Queen Bitch," David Bowie (Bibbety Bobbety Hat. That's all I have to say) or the "59th Street bridge song," Simon and Garfunkel (Hello Lamp post, whatcha knowing...)

1. Wedding Song: "Grow Old With Me", John Lennon (or the cover by a local band, Peter Brienholt & Big Parade.)
2. Funeral Song: "Little Wing", Jimi Hendrix or the Sting cover. (I don't know why. It just says Goodbye to me, somehow.)
3. Bullpen Song: "Walk of Life," Dire Straits. Probably because of the video.
4. Favorite song lyrics: "Passenger Seat," Death Cab for Cutie. ("If you feel embarrassed, I'll be your pride/if you need directions, I'll be your guide." *swoons* Ben Hibbard is so my sekrit music boyfriend.)

1. Wedding -- "The Luckiest" by Ben Folds. That's right. I'm a cliche. Kiss the fattest part of my ass.
2. Funeral -- "When the Angels Sing" by Social Distortion.
3. Bullpen -- "My Name Is Mud" by Primus.
4. Lyric -- "Pennsylvania" by The Bloodhound Gang. "Do you even know what a WaWa is, girl?"

Wedding: Crossroads by Don McLean
Funeral: I still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For by U2
Bullpen Song: Um, Centerfield? John Foggerty? Any takers on that one? No? Too damn bad. It's good.
Lyrics: Whew tough one. The two greatest lyrics of all time are:
"You do the kind of stuff that only Prince would sing about."
-and-
"Smoked the day's last cigarette remembering what she said."
But a song that I like the lyrics all the way through, as a top lyrics song, hmm. Gotta go with "A Talk with George" by Jonathan Coulton.

OH, and the bastard earlier who picked Sunday Mornin' Comin' down for his funeral song, that should have been mine dammit. GREAT CHOICE.

Funeral Song - "Lived in Bars" by Cat Power

Bullpen Song - "Such Great Heights" by the Postal Service

Lyrics - "Brand New Colony" by the Postal Service

Wedding song:
"At Last" - Etta James
Cliche, I know, but I'm having trouble coming up with this one. I'd really prefer the wedding song to be something special/significant for both of us, and seeing as how I have not met the lady yet, I really can not say.

Funeral song:
"Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" - Monty Python
I want my funeral to be well-attended, bittersweet fun.

Bullpen song:
"Attack" - Joe Satriani
This song kicks ass and would be the harbinger of much athletic ass-kicking by me.

Lyrics:
"One Angry Dwarf And Two Hundred Solemn Faces" - Ben Folds Five
I'm sure I could come up with something more poetic, but I gotta trot out the Ben Folds here...it is my dream karaoke song after all.

Wedding: Well, since the odds of my having a traditional ceremony are small, I'm going to go with first dance at the after-party, which would be Stevie Wonder "I Believe" (and yes, it is High Fidelity inspired)

Funeral: Iz "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", the same song played when we spread my grandfather's ashes, followed by a day of drinking and remembering. Can't think of a better way to go out.

Bullpen: Stone Temple Pilots "Vaseline", starts slow and then crescendos into a great rock song.

Lyrics: Depends on the mood. Right now I'm at work, so I have to go with Reel Big Fish "Fuck Off". Catch me at a better time and it would be different

"Well first of all,
I'd like to say, Fuck off, fuck off, fuck off, fuck off
If you don't get it why don't you go shove your head back up your ass
And don't waste my time,
I don't need your opinion. No"

1. Wedding Song: Can't Take My Eyes off of You" Frankie Vallie (or if I'm feeling very silly: The Way You Make Me Feel" as performed by Britney Spears and Michael Jackson.)
2. Funeral Song:
3. Bullpen Song: "Atom Bomb" by Fluke
4. Favorite song lyrics: When I was an emo teenager, it was "Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd. Nowadays it's anything in any song by the Hold Steady.

Lyrics: Bob Dylan - Visions of Johanna

Lyric: The Calendar Hung Itself - Bright Eyes

"Does he kiss your eyelids in the morning when you start to raise your head?

1) Wedding: Lay Lady Lay (the Magnet/Gemma Hayes version)...yes yes...even though it's about some guy trying to get into some girl's pants - that's how you got to the whole wedding business in the first place

2) Funeral: Either Tzigane by Ravel or Wake Up by Arcade Fire

3) Bullpen: Funnily enough, Wake Up again but this time by Rage Against The Machine

4) Lyric: Radiohead - Talk Show Host:

"You want me?
Fucking well come and find me
I'll be waiting
With a gun and a pack of sandwiches"

Wedding: "Let's Stay Together" Al Green-so joyful and i like that it starts the marriage out on a positive note.

Funeral-"Lonesome Road" James Taylor. Clearly i want people to bawl at my funeral. I'm dead, damnit-they should.

Bullpen-this one's hard. I am not in any way athletic so maybe Kanye's Stronger? ("That which don't kill me can only make me stronger") That's if i don't get killed by a stray ball/bat/rugby stick/whatever sport I'm "playing"

Lyrics: Fiona Apple's "Parting Gift"-it's even better when you hear her sing it. It's a lilting rhythm that adds to the lyrics.
I bet you could never tell
That I knew you didn't know me that well
It is my fault you see
You never learned that much from me

Oh you silly stupid pastime of mine
You were always good for a rhyme
And from the first, to the last time, the signs
Said 'Stop' - but we went on whole-hearted
It ended bad, but I love what we started
It said 'Stop' - but we went on whole-hearted
It ended bad, but I love what we started

I took off my glasses
While you were yelling at me once more than once
So as not to see you see me react
Should've put 'em, should've put 'em on again
So I could see you see me sincerely yelling back

I bet your fortressed face
Belied your fort of lace
It is by the grace of me
You never learned what I could see

2. Stephen Paulus' "Pilgrim's Hymn" -- Even though it's a Christian hymn and I'm Jewish, it's just so comforting.

3. Probably "Eye of the Tiger." Why not be cliche?

4. These days my favorite lyrics are probably The Cure's "Catch" --And she used to fall down a lot
That girl was always falling
Again and again
And I used to sometimes try to catch her
But never even caught her name.

I think it's because I'm clumsy.

Bullpen: Having never been near a bullpen, I'm going to go with "Stars" by Hum, cued past the soft opening and going right for the loud crash part.

2. Funeral: "Born on a train" Magnetic Fields
3. Bullpen: "Since U Been Gone" because, come on people...
4. Lyrics: "Divorce Song", Liz Phair-
"And when I asked for a separate room, it was late at night, and we'd been driving since noon.
But if I'd known how that would sound to you, I would have stayed in your bed, for the rest of my life just to prove I was right,
that it's harder to be friends than lovers,
and you shouldn't try to mix the two.
Cause if you do it and you're still unhappy, then you know that the problem is you.
And it's true that I stole your lighter.
And it's also true that I lost the map.
But when you said that I wasn't worth talking to, I had to take your word on that.
But if you'd known how that would sound to me,
you would have taken it back,
and boxed it up and buried it in the ground.
Boxed it up and buried it in the ground,
boxed it up and buried it in the ground.
Burned it up and thrown it away.
And the license said you had to stick around until I was dead.
Well if you're tired of looking at my face I guess I already am...."

Funeral Song: I can't translate it but they played this one song at my grandad's funeral (he'd picked it out himself) ... it's a Russian folk song that was recorded in the 60s by a guy whose voice could give Tom Waits a run for his money. Bullpen: Stop Breaking Down - White Stripes

Lyrics: Oh just about any Dylan song ever. But for the moment I'll go with...

Idiot wind, blowing through the buttons of our coats
Blowing through the letters that we wrote.
Idiot wind, blowing through the dust upon our shelves,
We're idiots, babe.
It's a wonder we can even feed ourselves.

"Fuck Shit Up" by the Blatz - I'd love to see a Formal Attire Mosh Pit, or "Crazy Lover" by Henry Rollins

2) Funeral: I don't know, I won't be there.

3) Anthem: "Working Man" by Rush because it's a long-ass song with AWESOME guitar.

4) Lyric: "Ne me quitte pas" by Jacques Brel - translated: at the end of the song, after he's told her how much she shouldn't leave him and how much she will come back to him and how things will be great again, he crys (seriously, the recording I have has him choking back tears) "I want to be your dog/I want to be the shadow of your dog" COME ON. Any guy says that to me and he's in my pants FOREVER.

1. "At the Beginning," which is the song played over the credits during the animated version of Anastasia. Shut up. It's a beautiful movie, and a beautiful song. I hate the way that it's sung, though, so I'd have to have people sing it live.

2. Assuming I just dropped dead this minute, "Song of Purple Summer" by Duncan Sheik. Life goes on, and everything will be good again.

3. "Don't Stop Believing" without a doubt. It's cliché, but no song pumps me up more.

Lyric: From Scissor Sisters "It Can't Come Quickly Enough," the line "We knew all the answers and we shouted them like anthems." I have no idea why.

Wedding songs: we played Hank Williams' "Baby We're Really In Love" for the processional and Wilco's "California Stars" for the recessional

Funeral song: "Eternal Life" by Jeff Buckley

Bullpen song: "Positive Jam" by The Hold Steady -- the big chords before, and while, Craig sings "all you sniffling indie kids...HOLD STEADY!"

Favorite lyrics:

"The ones who love us best are the ones we'll lay to rest

And visit their graves on holidays at best

The ones who love us least are the ones we'll die to please

If it's any consolation, I don't begin to understand"

Wedding: Get Your Hands off My Woman The Darkness + Fucken Awesome Spiderbait
Funeral: Spaceball Ricochet T. Rex
Bullpen: Whoo Hoo 5.6.7.8's (Kill Bill Soundtrack, although the origianl Rock*A*Teens version would work)
Lyrics: Most of Fountains of Wayne lyrics work for me, the minutia of melancholy (that make sense?) just seems honest (one of the few artists where I notice the lyrics separately from the song as a whole). So how about Red Dragon Tatoo Opening stanza and chorus?

Monday gonna take a ride on
The n train down to coney island
With the money I saved
Gonna get me engraved
Drink down a lot of basil hayden
Get kicked out when I can't see straight and
What an island can be on
Under the neon

Red dragon tattoo
Is just about on me
I got it for you
So now do you want me
With nothing to prove
Will you be my honey, oh yeah
In you I confide
Red dragon tattoo
I'm fit to be dyed
Am I fit to have you

Wedding Song: Strawberry by Paul Baribeau
Funeral Song: When the Stars Go Blue by Ryan Adams
Bullpen Song: uhhh.
Lyrics: Anything by Spoon. Or, Strawberry by Paul Baribeau (same as above) total perfection.

To say that you are cute,
Would be like saying a strawberry is sweet,
'Cause a strawberry has secret flavors that are sharp, and tart, and red, and deep,
And i would love to find you growing wild out by the woods,
i would make a basket with the front of my t-shirt,
and take home as many of you as I could,
And to say that you are pretty,
Would be like saying that the ocean is blue,
Cause the ocean is full of all kinds of colors,
and I see all kinds of things when I look at you,
and I want to explore you
With my tenni shoes off
Standing ankle deep in a tide pool,
with my khaki pants rolled up,
and to say that you are funny would be like saying that the night sky is black,
Cause the night sky is filled with stars and comets and planets that no one has seen yet,
And i want to look at you,
Lying down on my front lawn,
I'll try to take you all in at once, but you just go on and on and on

Wedding Song:
It was "At Last" by Etta James, which I love and though it's a cliche it's a good one. But if my wife and I had had the guts it would have been Eric Idle's "Eric The Half-A-Bee"

Funeral Song:
Someone said the medley at the end of Abbey Road, and Christ I wish I thought of that, especially "Carry That Weight". But it would probably be the coda (just the coda) to "Layla". "Rhapsody In Blue" is too long, the "Ode to Joy" is too overused and "Clair de Lune" is a bit too sad, but those majestic tunes were front runners.

Bullpen Song:
"I Will Follow" - U2. Just for that guitar opening!

Favorite Lyrics: Bear with me, I'm throwing out a few of them here.

"A beach is a place where a man can feel
He's the only soul in the world that's real." - The Who

"What the world needs now, is another folk singer
Like I need a hole in my head." - Cracker

"...And the poets down here don't write nothin at all
They just stand back and let it all be." - Bruce

Wedding- Something by The Beatles. Yes, yes, cliched. But Frank Sinatra called it the most beautiful love song of all time. If it's good enough for Frank, it's good enough for me.

Funeral- One of these Things First by Nick Drake. I refer to it as the suicide song because it's so damn sad. Or- Another One Bites the Dust by Queen because I'm one sick person.

Bull Pen- Wearing and Tearing by Led Zeppelin. That batter is going to crap his cleats when I run out to the mound!

Lyrics- I'm going through a Rush phase:

A modern-day warrior
Mean mean stride,
Todays Tom Sawyer
Mean mean pride.

Third verse:
"Oh what a rush of ripe elan
Languor on divans
Dalliant and dainty
But oh, the smell of burnt cocaine
The dolor and decay
It only makes me cranky
Oh great calamity,
Ditch of iniquity and tears
How I abhor this place
Its sweet and bitter taste
Has left me wretched, retching on all fours
Los Angeles, I'm yours"

Wedding - Melody of "Somewhere over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World" by Israel Kamamawiwo'ole. Melancholy, uplifting, sweet, and bitter. Everything a wedding can be. Plus, I got to just be with my new husband for minutes before the chaos of the reception started.

Funeral - "Precious Lord, Take my Hand"

Bullpen - "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" by Jay-Z

Lyrics - There are tons, but two stick out in my mind:
Central Reservation, by Beth Orton
"Its like living in the middle of the ocean
With no future, no past
And everything that's good about now
Might just glide right past
I'm stepping through brilliant shades
Of the colors you bring
And this time this time this time
Is fine just as it is"

And Paul Simon "You Can Call Me Al"
"Who'll be my role-model
Now that my role-model is
Gone Gone
He ducked back down the alley
With some roly-poly little bat-faced girl
All alone alone
There were incidents and accidents
There were hints and allegations"

"A man walks down the street
It's a street in a strange world
Maybe it's the Third World
Maybe it's his first time around
He doesn't speak the language
He holds no currency
He is a foreign man
He is surrounded by the sound
The sound
Cattle in the marketplace
Scatterlings and orphanages
He looks around, around
He sees angels in the architecture
Spinning in infinity
He says Amen! and Hallelujah!"

wedding song: "Northern Sky" Nick Drake

Funeral song: Mozart's 40 symphony 1st movement. Don't ask me why. It's really cheerful on the surface and yet has seriously melancholy undercurrents.

Bullpen: Just the screaming part at the beginning of Revolution by the Beatles...seriously scary if you turn it way up

Favorite lyrics: I have a tie between Ira Gershwin and Irving Berlin
1. " 'Neath the stars at bazaars often I've had to caress men. Five or ten dollars then I'd collect from all those yesmen. Don't be sad I must add that they meant no more than chessmen. Darling can't you see, 'twas for charity?" -Intro to How Long Has This Been Going On?
2. "But you can't get a hug from a mug with a slug, no you can't get a man with a gun. [...] "And a man may be hot, but he's not when he's shot. No you can't get a man with a gun."

I kind of can't believe no one else has mentioned a song by her. Her voice is incredible. Also, maybe Coffee and TV by Blur. It probably depends on the man.

2. Funeral: There Is a Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths
Fabulously depressing. Morrissey should be a requirement at all funerals, I think.

3. Bullpen: Everytime We Touch - Cascada
Because it is hilarious and ridiculous, and I love it despite its inexplicably misspelled title. Plus I feel like as the first female pitcher in the major leagues, they'd want me to have a sort of girly gimmick anyway.

Government funding of military science
Genetically engineered ultraviolent
DNA, killer genes
To program microchips, marines
See stealth bombers and tomahawks
On CNN, pay-per-view war

Wedding song - I got married to In My Life. Although if I had a do-over I might swap it out for Little Trip to Heaven by Tom Waits. Then again, I might not. In My Life is a pretty perfect wedding song.

Funeral Song - Family Reserve by Lyle Lovett

Bullpen Song - Hey Man, Nice Shot (although I have NO idea why)

Lyric - There's this song by Slaid Cleves called Broke Down which starts "Sherry had a pawn shop band of gold, A sink full of dishes and a love grown cold" which pretty much embodies every reason why I love good country music.

2. I've thought about this a lot, and I have three picks: That's How I Knew This Story Would Break My Heart by Aimee Mann, Hoppipola by Sigur Ros and Motion Picture Soundtrack by Radiohead.
3. Step Aside - Sleater-Kinney

I'm blanking on the favourite lyric, but for some reason a line from Cannonball Days by Ryan Adams just sounds good to me right now: "So bottoms up, cheers/Baby here's to your tears". It just rhymes nicely.

'The piercing radiant moon,
The storming of poor June,
All the life running through her hair,
Approaching guiding light,
Our shallow years in fright,
Dreams are made winding through my head,
Through my head,
Before you know,
Awake,
Your lives are open wide,
The V-chip gives them sight,
All the life running through her hair,
The spiders all in tune,
The evening of the moon
Through my head,
Before you know,
Before you know I will be waiting all awake,
Dreams are made winding through her hair' Spiders - System of a Down

'The kombucha mushroom people

Call it insane, yeah they call it insane
I play Russian roulette everyday, a man's sport
With a bullet called life, yeah mama called life
You know that every time I try to go
Where I really want to be
It's already where I am
Cause I'm already there!
I got a gun the other day from Sako
It's cute, small, fits right in my pocket
Yeah, right in my pocket
My girl, you know, she lashes out at me sometimes
And I just fucking kick her, and then ooh baby she's O.K
I sit, in my desolate room, no lights, no music
Just anger, I've killed everyone
I'm away forever, but I'm feeling better
How do I feel, what do I say
Fuck you, it all goes away
How do I feel, what do I say
In the end it all goes away' Sugar - System of a Down

'Twas in the darkest depths of Mordor
I met a girl so fair
But Gollum and the Evil One
Crept up and slipped away with her' Ramble On - Led Zeppelin

'My tapeworm tell me what to do
My tapeworm tells me where to go
Pull the tapeworm out of your ass' Needles - System of a Down (I played this song for my mother in the car and she laughed so hard at this part that she swerved)

Wedding: I used "I could not ask for more" by Sara Evans. I would have used David Grey's "This Year's Love" or Dave Matthews Band - "Crush" instead.

Funeral: "Something I Still Cannot Have" - NIN or "Waiting For My Real Life To Begin" by Colin Hay

Bullpen: As a tribute to one of the best baseball movies, I would use "Wild Thing" just like in Major League. Also up for consideration is "Firestarter" - Prodigy and Offspring - "Come Out And Play".

Lyrics: Dave Matthews Band - #41
"Why don't you come into the rain and play and let the tears splash all over you?"

Bloodhound Gang - Most of the Hooray for Boobies Album. It makes a bad day so much better.

2. "Happy Phantom" - Tori Amos

Wedding song: My ex-husband and I danced to "Your Precious Love" by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Great song. Despite the crappy marriage.

Funeral song: "Moon River."

Bullpen song: "Only a Lad," by Oingo Boingo. Takes me back to high school (yes, I'm that old) and we'd sing along. "He liked to BURN things!"

Lyrics: from "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" by Bob Dylan:

I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind.
You could've done better, but I don't mind.
You just sorta wasted my precious time.
But don't think twice, it's alright.

Wedding: She's no lady, she's my wife. Lyle Lovett. (Mostly because my mom would plotz!) And I lurve me some lyle!
Funeral: If I ever leave this world alive. Flogging Molly, Little Wing. Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Bullpen: Living Dead Girl. Rob Zombie.
Song Lyrics: Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste. Rolling Stones
Penguins are so sensitive, sensitive to my needs. Lyle Lovett
We all know there are things we say and do we can never take back. But what would you be if you didn't try? You haveta try. So, after a lot of thought, if it's not too late, make it a cheeseburger.
Lyle again.

2. Funeral Song - "Another One Bites the Dust" - Queen (no sappy shit for my funeral)
3. Bullpen Song - "Hate to Say I Told You So" - the Hives
4. Lyric - "Deacon Blues" - Steely Dan:
I'll learn to work the saxophone
I'll play just what I feel
Drink scotch whisky all night long
And die behind the wheel
They got a name for the winners in the world
I want a name when I lose
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide
Call me Deacon Blues

Thank you to everyone who posted lyrics! I love reading what words/phrases jump out at and speak to people. I've definitely found some new songs to check out. Obviously, if you look at my choices, I'm just a straightforward classic rock girl, and it takes a lot for me to want to explore anything new. Good job everyone, especially Andrea with the "Strawberry" song. Beautiful.

Wedding: If I ever lose my faith in you by Sting

Funeral: Take me out by Franz Ferdinand (so if you're lonely/you know I'm here waiting for you...)/Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen/To the end by Blur

Did anyone else find it easier to think of funeral songs than wedding songs?

Bullpen: Psycho Killer by the Talking Heads

Lyric:Right now, Al Stewart's My Enemies Have Sweet Voices
...I was playing Brag in Bedlam
And the doctor would not deal
Asking me: "Why do you kneel down there bleeding?"
I answered him "Physician,
I think you would have cried
I was falling back on failure
Then failure stepped aside
And my enemies have sweet voices
Their tones are soft and kind
When I hear my heart rejoices
I do not seem to mind

I was blind side to the gutter
And Merlin happened by
Asking me "why do you lie down there bleeding?"
I answered him "Magician, as a matter of a fact
I was jumping to conclusions
And one of them jumped back
And my enemies have sweet voices..."

Funeral song: "Con Te Partiro" - Andrea Bocelli

Bullpen: Theme music from Superman (I would have this as a wedding song if it weren't for the fact that my fiancee would kill me)

OR

"We Will Rock You" - Queen

Lyrics: So many to choose from

1. To my fiancee - "But of all these friends and lovers, There is no one compares with you. And these memories lose their meaning When I think of love as something new. Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life, I love you more". Beatles

2. Funeral - It was a Very Good Year - Frank Sinatra

3. Bullpen - Public Service Announcement - Jay-Z

4. Father and Son - Cat Stevens / Yusuf Islam.

And yeeeeesh... I read somewhere in the above comments one person said they didn't even know what a bullpen is, and another said that they thought their song would "psyche out the pitcher"... Get to know your nation's national passtime a little, for your own sake.

Bullpen- 'Extraordinary'- Liz Phair

Wedding song- From this moment by Shania Twain.
(My sister wants the same song for her wedding as well but we'll see who gets hitched first)

Wedding: The Rolling Stones' Wild Horses (When I was a kid, okay, like thirteen, I was convinced this song was the EPITOME of love)

Funeral: The Who Pure and Easy (if you've never heard this song, download it NOW, it's all about how the world was created with a music note and how the note's become discordant and even though it created the world, that same note can break it too. I just LOVE The Who)

Bullpen: Green Day's She's a Rebel (what can I say, I'm a fangirl)

Favorite Lyric: This is from the broadway version of Gregory McGuire's Wicked. I know some people have beef, but I just love some of those songs. So empowering as only Broadway can be.

And if I'm flying solo
At least I'm flying free
To those who'd ground me
Take a message back from me
Tell them how I am
Defying gravity
I'm flying high
Defying gravity
And soon I'll match them in renown

Wedding - Can't Stand Me Now - The Libertines
Funeral - Lay Me Low - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Bullpen - The Hammer - Motorhead
Lyric - Silver foxes looking for romance
In the chain smoke Kansas flashdance ass pants
Hotwax - Beck

Wedding song: The Way You Look Tonight - Tony Bennet, because it's plinky plonky piano and sleepy rythmn combined make for a very cheesy slow dance.

Funeral Song: The Swimming Song by Loudon Wainwright. The acoustic version, with the bluesy violins. It's melancholic, but the lyrics are (to me) about life's small triumphs.

Anthem: i find competative sports and the machismo that goes with them HILARIOUS so i guess i'd go for something a bit piss-taking, like 'pump it' by black eyed peas.

Favourite lyrics: 'chelsea morning' by joni mitchell. never fails to put me in a bouyant mood - you know those perfect days when you wake up and it's such a gorgeous morning that you're in a good mood the rest of the day? that's what these lyrics do for me:
"the sun poured in like butterscotch/and stuck to all my senses.../oh! won't you stay, we'll put on the day/and we'll talk in present tenses//

Wedding - I Will - The Beatles

Funeral - Lover, You Should've Come Over - Jeff Buckley

Bullpen - Papelbon's using my first choice, so I'll go with Punk's Dead, You're Next - Slapshot

Favorite Lyrics - a near impossible task, but I'll go with a current favorite, from the Dropkick Murphys "Last Letter Home" (I love the whole song, so I'll use an extended part of it):

Hello there my dearest love
Today I write to you about our sons
The boys start school today
They're the spitting image of you in every way

Hey son it's Dad
I hope this letter finds you well out of harm's way
We saw the news today it frightened your Mom
Now all she does is pray

If I lead will you follow?
Will you follow if I lead?

Hey Melissa it's me don't be afraid
I'm in good hands I'm gonna be home soon
It's time to watch the children grow up
I wanna be more than a voice on the phone

Thanks Ma I got your package today
I love "The Fields Of Athenry"
I swear I want 'em to play that song on the pipes
At my funeral when I die

every one of them words rang true and
glowed like burning coal / Pouring off
of every page like it was written in my
soul from me to you."
-Bob Dylan, Tangled Up In Blue

I'd rather be famous than righteous or
holy / Any day, any day, any day."

lol, toyon, I was kidding. I know what a bullpen is.

I just don't care.

Watching paunchy men in tight leggings playing with their sticks and balls, running around in circles, spitting tobacco, scratching themselves in the dugout.... eh, I just don't get it.
Now, soccer and rugby : mmmmm, them boys are NICE to look at. All those sinewy muscles... purrrrrr.(note I would never watch a sports game b/c I actually care about the outcome. If I'm watching, it's cuz I have no choice)

Wedding: Somewhere over the rainbow by Israel Kamamawiwo'ole.

Funeral: Amazing Grace on the bagpipes. Trite probably, but beautiful.

Bullpen: Ode to Joy.

Lyrics: The Boxer by Simon and Garfunkel
In the clearing stands a boxer, and a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminder of every glove that laid him down or cut him
'Til he cried out in his anger and his shame
I am leaving, I am leaving, but the fighter still remains
Yes, he still remains ...

God I love that lyric.

Funeral: "Sweet Dreams" La Bouche (at least for 30 seconds) then M. Ward's "To Go Home" or something of that ilk.

Bullpen: "Wayfarer" Hot Water Music - I'd be the most feared closer this side of Jonathan Papelbon.

I have a friend who wants her first dance at her wedding to be "Rock Lobster." I can get behind that.

And another friend has a brother in the minor leagues, and his "bullpen song" used to be "Billie Jean."

Wedding Song: "Scenic World" by Beirut. It's pretty!

Funeral Song: I don't care if it's cliche, but "I will follow you into the dark" by Death Cab.

Bullpen Song: "Emily Kane" by Art Brut.

Favorite lyrics: From "The End of Medicine" by the New Pornographers:
"Somewhere in the system there's an
open-ended list of all the lies we tell
unthinking, blinking, what could we be living
is this life or is this even in the realm of possibility, You see it when you're missing who you came to see. Is this thing even on?"

Wedding Song: I've got a fire in my heart - Super Furry Animals

Funeral Ag Criost an sheil (an irish hymn, it likely wouldn't be a religious service but this is just a gorgeous air)

Bullpen Sunshine of your love Cream

Lyrics 'If my baby don't love me no more, I know her sister will' Red House Jimi Hendrix because it takes a certain kind of guy to sing that and not get hit in the face.

So many of my picks overlap!
Okay...
Wedding: God Only Knows by TBB. I could imaging myself glowing at someone when that song got played. Not that I'd ever get married...
Funeral: Whatever wasn't too chipper by the Vince Guaraldi trio. If Charlie Brown isn't melancholy and warm, I don't know what is. Not that I'd ever die...
Ball Pen: Celebrity Skin by Hole. What's a ball pen?
Favorite lyric:"But you, my soiled teenage girlfriend/ although you furrow like a lioness/ and we are vagabonds/we travel without seatbelts on/ we live this close to death..."
Yesssss. Of course, that song would work on the wedding or funeral one as well.

2. Funeral Song: Telstar by the Texas Tornadoes (that's a recent change: I wanted "One Step Beyond" by Madness, but then it was mentioned in High Fidelity, making it unusable)

3. Bullpen Song: The song that should be played any time anything happens ever, "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" by Van "Effing" Halen

4. Favorite song lyrics: For a long time, it was "You say the world is getting rid of her demons, I say 'baby what've you been smokin'?" from Upside Down by Tori Amos. More recently I might go with "A Better Son/Daughter" by Rilo Kiley

Wedding song: "Time After Time." Think Tony Bennett, not Cyndi Lauper.

Funeral Song: "So What." Miles Davis.

Bullpen song: "Sympathy For the Devil." The Rolling Stones.

Favorite lyric: Perhaps it's cheesy but I love my wife this much. From my wedding song selection,

I only know what I know/
The passing years will show/
You've kept my love so young,
So new.

And time after time/
I tell myself that I'm/
So lucky,
To be loving you.

Wedding: of course "Love Stinks" by J. Geils Band
Funeral: again, obviously, "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen
Bullpen: "Fix Up, Look Sharp", Dizzee Rascal or something really gay, like "YMCA" or "Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys" by Traffic
Lyric: if I have to choose only one - "What kind of fuckery is this", "Me and Mr. Jones" by Amy Wino

But mad props to the selection of "Teenage Dirtbag" and "Flagpole Sitta" - those songs rule

Wedding Song: for my wedding I chose Mr. Cash doing In My Life by the Beatles. Reason number one million and four I should have known it wasn't going to work, choosing such a sad version of it. If I get married again, I think "Baby I'm Amazed" by Paul McCartney would be a good choice.

Funeral Song: Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley

Bullpen Song: Lose Yourself by Eminem

Favorite Song Lyric: Well, currently going through the break up, I'd have to go with Counting Crows: "I can look into your eyes and see the mess we're in/Well darling if shit came out/Well I suppose that shit went in"

Ahh! Hard decisions, all of these:

Wedding: "Melt With You", Nouvelle Vague's cover. Also the old swing tune mentioned above, "Time After Time".

Funeral: "In a Little While" by U2, "Irish Blessing" traditional, or Elvis belting out a little "If I Can Dream".

Bullpen: "Indestructible" by Rancid, "Smash it Up" by the Dead Boys or "F*ckin in the Bushes" by Oasis.

Lyrics: "Still Fighting It" by Ben Folds. They really need the melody to make it complete:

"It was pain
Sunny days and rain
I knew youd feel the same things

Everybody knows
It hurts to grow up
And everybody does
Its so weird to be back here.
Let me tell you what
The years go on and
We're still fighting it, we're still fighting it
Oh, we're still fighting it, we're still fighting it

And youre so much like me
Im sorry"

Was there a funeral song/reading diversion already? That would rock!

Posted by: Henry at October 19, 2007 2:09 PM

I'm mostly a lurker, but this is too good to pass up!

Wedding song: "You're My Home" Billy Joel (nice and gender-nonspecific)

Funeral song: Hava Nagila played on the bagpipes. Putting that in my living will.

Bullpen song: "Born in the USA" The Boss. It's cliche, I know, but something about that song just makes me want to rock out.

Favorite lyrics:

"What do you do with a BA in English,

What is my life going to be?

Four years of college and plenty of knowledge

Have earned me this useless degree.

I can't pay the bills yet, 'cause I have no skills yet.

The work is a big scary place.

But somehow I can't shake the feeling I might make

A difference to the human race."

-Avenue Q... those lyrics become more and more true everyday.

Fun! Thanks!

1. Wedding Song: My husband and I danced to "Steady as We Go" by Dave Matthews Band (we got married in Mexico and had to rely on a CD that a friend bought... it was still pretty)

2. Funeral: "Keep Me in Your Heart"- Warren Zevon

3. Bullpen: I have no idea, I am so uncoordinated, I would probably trip and fall as I was running out... so, "I Will Survive" by Cake

4. Red Headed Stranger - Willie Nelson

He's wild in his sorrow
He's ridin' an' hidin' his pain
Don't fight him, don't spite him
Just wait till tomorrow
Maybe he'll ride on again."
- in memory of my uncle, who loved that so much.
or the lyrics to "You are my Sunshine" for my daughter who died this August at 4 months old. Especially this part:
"The other night dear,as I lay sleeping

Wedding song: Ban Marriage by the Hidden Cameras

Funeral Song: There Is A Place In Hell For Me And My Friends by Morrissey

Bullpen: This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us by Sparks

Lyrics: Rubber Ring by The Smiths

Posted by: Emma at October 19, 2007 3:22 PM

Wedding: Fiona Apple - I Know (my wedding's in six months, guess this'll be the start to my song list.)
Funeral Song: Porcupine Tree - Collapse the Light Into Earth
Bullpen Song: The "in the middle of battle" music from 300. Hard to think of what will get you pumped when you don't play sports.
Favorite Lyrics: Matthew Good - Dusk (beautiful song, too.)
"Quickly, quietly lost
Dust covers everything up

Foreign reporters take snapshots
And back at the hotel they can't stomach lunch

Awake,
Light,
Dusk."

Posted by: castigate at October 19, 2007 3:27 PM

Wedding: Cheap Trick, "I Want You to Want Me". It's upbeat and I know it'd make her laugh.

Funeral: Annie Lennox, "Into the West" off the Return of the King soundtrack. I wave my geek flag to the very end, LOTR-hate be damned.

Bullpen: Andrew W.K., "Ready to Die."

Lyric - fuck, this is the tough one. Ummm ... "when I am king / you will be first against the wall," Radiohead.

Posted by: Ericeric at October 19, 2007 3:29 PM

1)Wedding. Fleetwood Mac "As Long as You Follow"

2)Funeral. Pearl Jam "Immortality"

3)Bullpen. Metallica "Enter Sandman"

4)Lyrics.
Better Than Ezra -I Do

"Someone out there's

Listening to the same song

Feeling the same way that I do

Make me a believer pick up the receiver

Tell me you feel just like I do

I do"

1. Wedding: Home, Rose Cousins. Sorry, this is obscure but lovely

2. Funeral: Don't Stop Believin, Journey

3. Anthem: Shakedown by Bob Seger

4. Lyric: Chocolate Jesus, Tom Waits

Posted by: Brin at October 19, 2007 3:32 PM

Wedding Song: "You're So True" by Joseph (I know, picking a Shrek 2 song is very uncool or whatever and it's sappy as hell. Who cares?)

Funeral Song: "Too Long Awake" by Idlewild (which, for some reason, always strikes me as feeling like the kind of song they use on Cold Case for the "Bad guy admits murder, is hauled away as ghosts watch" montage at the end, and so naturally fits a funeral...I think)

Bullpen Song: "Break" by Republic of Loose (because it pumps me up like nothing else)

Lyrics: "Volcano" by Damien Rice ("What I am to you/is not what you mean to me/so give me miles and miles of mountains/and I'll ask for the sea")

Posted by: Shay at October 19, 2007 3:49 PM

1. Wedding: Every Little Thing She Does - The Police
2. Funeral: Spirit in the Sky - Dc Talk
3. Bullpen: America - Neil Diamond
4. Lyrics: Right Hand Man - Joan Osborne "Let me use your toothbrush, have you got a clean shirt? My panties in a wad, at the bottom of my purse. I walk into the street, the airs so cool, I'm wired and I'm tired, and I'm grinnin' like a fool"

Posted by: Lorraine at October 19, 2007 4:24 PM

1. Wedding: We Walk the Same Line - Everything But the Girl

"If you loose your faith babe you can have mine
and if you're lost I'm right behind
cause we walk the same line."

2. Funeral: The Parting Glass - The Wailin' Jennys accapella version. Maudlin, yes, but then it would seamlessly segue into something upbeat like Macy Gray's "The Letter" -

"So long everybody
Mama don't be sad for me
Life was a heartache and now I am finally free
...
Hope I see you someday soon
So long everybody
I have gone beyond the moon"

3. Bullpen: It's going to have to be "Lose Yourself" Eminem, "Enter Sandman" - Metallica, or the theme from Rocky

4. Lyrics: yeesh, so many... these though have summed up very important personal experiences better than anything else ever has

Death Cab for Cutie "What Sarah Said"

"Love is watching someone die
So who's gonna watch you die?"

Liz Phair "Little Digger"

"Now you're thinking little thoughts about it
Taking every inch of him in
What does it mean when something changes how its always been
And in your head you keep repeating the line
My Mother is mine"

All good songs, but none of them as good as Bright Spark's "Where's My Bloody Valentine Card?"
You can find their one and only single on myspace.

"I want to get engaged,

I realized last night in a drunken rage.

Your dead-good at sex

And cooking me tea.

Don't tell me no

When I ask you to marry me."

1. wedding -- Ours was "Sunny Side of the Street" (the old big band one, though we did contemplate the Pogues song as well)
2. funeral -- Bob Dylan's "Forever Young" (the solo accoustic version on the "Biography" collection) to my kids
3. "Fiesta" by the Pogues for the anthem
4. You can't beat the lyrics to Elvis Coostello's "Peace Love and Understanding"

Hmmm.....

1. I have one pick for a wedding song: Power of Two by the Indigo Girls

2. Funeral - Death Came a Knockin' by The Duhks

3. I don't have an anthem

4. For pure, silly, sing-a-long fun I would have to go with Shoop by Salt-n-Pepa but for lyrics that touch me every time it is Love at the Five and Dime by Nanci Griffith and Darius Rucker (yeah, Hootie)

Rita was sixteen years
Hazel eyes and chestnut hair
She made the Woolworth counter shine

And Eddie was a sweet romancer
And a darn good dancer
And they waltzed the aisles of the five and dime

And they'd sing
Dance a little closer to me
Hey, dance a little closer now
Dance a little closer tonight

Dance a little closer to me
Hey, it's closing time
And love's on sale
Tonight at this five and dime

Eddie played the steel guitar
And his mama cried 'cause he played in the bars
And he kept young Rita out late at night

Soon they married up in Abelene
Lost a child in Tennessee
But still that love survived

And they'd sing
Dance a little closer to me
Hey, dance a little closer now
Dance a little closer tonight

One of the boys in Eddie's band
Took a shine to Rita's hand
So , Eddie ran off with the bass man's wife

Oh, but he was back by June
Singin' a different tune
Sporting Miss Rita back by his side

And they'd sing
Dance a little closer to me
Hey, dance a little closer now
Dance a little closer tonight

Eddie played in the barroom band
'Til arthritis took his hands
Now he sells insurance on the side

And Rita's got her house to keep
She sells dime store novels with a love so sweet
And they dance to the radio late at night and still sing

And they'd sing
Dance a little closer to me
Hey, dance a little closer now
Dance a little closer tonight

Wedding: John Lennon's "Grow Old With Me" (though I am just growing old alone at the moment)

Funeral: Talking Heads "Once in a Lifetime" (This is not my beautiful house, and I ask myself, "Well, how did I get here?")

Bullpen: Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", because that's just damn funny...

and favorite lyrics? Groucho, of course, singing Lydia The Tattooed Lady:

Lydia oh Lydia, that encyclopidia,
Oh Lydia the Queen of Tattoo.
On her back is the Battle of Waterloo.
Beside it the wreck of the Hesperus, too.
And proudly above waves the Red, White, and Blue,
You can learn a lot from Lydia.

Makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothin' short of dyin',
Half as lonesome as the sound,
On the sleepin' city sidewalks:
Sunday mornin' comin' down.

Wedding: Having already discussed this with my girlfriend, we have two choices. The real one would be Cigarettes and Coffee by Otis Redding and the joke one (at least a full minute played before we segue into Otis) would be Me and a Gun by Tori Amos.

Funeral: Come On Up To The House by Tom Waits, featuring one of my favorite lyrics "Come down off the cross, we can use the wood"... or So Long Marianne by Leonard Cohen.

Bullpen: Wolf Like Me by TV on the Radio.

FSL: Soft Picasso by Vic Chesnutt. Funny, sad, writerly, incredibly clever... what more could you possibly want?

Posted by: TableTopJoe at October 20, 2007 12:53 AM

Soft Picasso by Vic Chesnutt

It was a modern love affair completely cool and casual

They hardly knew each other was there

Both of them had their own getting off to do

They had to dream about their own self when they were through

But the modern girl was elated with what the revolution gave her

Since she was liberated she could have anything that striked her fancy

And she fancied quite a bit

if it felt good she did it

And she did it every chance she could get

With her main modern man and otherwise

And her taste wasn't limited to just modern guys

Since another modern girl showed her that modern girls know how to hold her

And after she had her eyes opened all her old close friends started getting closer

And new friends weren't that far, far away

but the modern man he just wasn't so lucky

being shook from his usual role as the heartbreaker

He was completely battered and bewildered

when he actually started in feeling something for her

And he discovered a new emotion when they stopped ending up together as frequently

And when he finally confronted her with the question

had she been bedding down with others in the periphery without him

And she replied "Hell yes! ain't it funny!"

so view the modern man

looking looking looking like a soft soft Picasso

he's there with his head in his hand

repeating to himself an epigram

"Live by the scam, die by the scam."

What's with all the double posts??

Wedding: "Falling is Like This" Ani DiFranco

Funeral: "Suzanne" Leonard Cohen

Bullpen: "Thunderstruck" AC/DC

AND, favorite song lyrics right now.....Hmmmmm.....

"For the Sake of the Song" Townes Van Zandt

"Nothins what it seems,
Maybe she'll start someday
To realize
If she abandons her dreams,
Then all the words she can say
Are only lies
When will she see
That to gain
Is only to lose?
All that she offers me
Are her chains,
I got to refuse

Oh but its only to herself that she's lied
She likes to pretend
Its something that she must defend,
With her pride
And I don't intend
To stand here and be the friend
From whom she must hide

Maybe she just has to sing, for the sake of the song?
And who do I think that I am to decide that shes wrong."

Posted by: Rachael at October 20, 2007 2:07 AM

Wedding: Hard to imagine, but how about Blood Sweat and Tears' "You Make Me So Very Happy"
Funeral: "Farewell Transmission" by Songs: Ohia
Bullpen: Great fun, this question. Current Indians setup man Rafael Betancourt uses an amazing one, the White Stripes' version of "Conquest." I can't steal that one, but DMX's Ruff Ryders Anthem ("Stop, Drop, Roll") is probably unfit for the public at a stadium. Maybe "Less Talk More Rokk" by Freezepop or "Grip Like a Vice" by The Go! Team
Lyric: Pink Floyd's "Time" STILL gets to me.

If I pitched for the Phillies it would be "Philadelphia Freedom" no doubt.

Mkay...

Wedding: Toss-up between Flames by VAST and Seal's Kiss From A Rose. The former is unbelievably romantic, but the latter is a great backing for a waltz :).

Funeral: Lisa Gerrard - Sacrifice.

Anthem: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Rollercoaster of Love. Horrible song, but somehow the only one that comes to mind :)

Anthem: If You Want Blood (You Got It)-AC/DC

Lyric: God's Gonna Cut You Down-Johnny Cash
Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler,
The gambler,
The back biter
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down

Well my goodness gracious let me tell you the news
My head's been wet with the midnight dew
I've been down on bended knee talkin' to the man from Galilee
He spoke to me in the voice so sweet
I thought I heard the shuffle of the angel's feet
He called my name and my heart stood still
When he said, "John go do My will!"

Posted by: speakeasys at October 22, 2007 8:18 PM

Really, really late but I had to think about this one to reduce my choices to one each.

Wedding Procession: Not a song, but when we are allowed to marry my partner and I will process down the aisle together to J. Pachelbel's one hit wonder: The Canon in D Major, with the Gigue. Trite, overdone, and sublimely beautiful, followed by a big celebration with much drinking and dancing.

Funeral: Again, not a song, but at my funeral I simply want everyone to watch a video of Balanchine's Serenade, set to P.I. Tchaikovski's Serenade for Strings, and then go to a big celebration with much drinking and dancing.

Anthem: Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen (what I always listened to to get pumped for a performance in a past life).

Lyrics: The entire ovuere that is Bat Out of Hell, Meat Loaf et al. "She was barely sixteen and barely dressed." "Two outta three ain't bad." Indeed: "Paradise by the dashboard light."

very late to the game, but i couldn't pass on this one...for the moment:

wedding: I'm Into Something Good - Herman's Hermits
funeral: It Is Well With My Soul (sentimental, 1st song i can remember hearing my dad sing)
bullpen: Broken Face - Pixies
lyrics: Girl From the North Country - Bob Dylan

..Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
If it rolls and flows all down her breast.
Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
That's the way I remember her best.

I'm a-wonderin' if she remembers me at all.
Many times I've often prayed
In the darkness of my night,
In the brightness of my day.

So if you're travelin' in the north country fair,
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.
