The Gym Mix

An Afternoon Comment Diversion / Dustin Rowles

Comment Diversions | July 9, 2007 | Comments (154)

Two weeks ago, we discussed food — specifically, one’s fantasy meal. Now, let’s assume that, after devouring said meal, your defense attorney discovers some DNA evidence that exculpates you of your crimes and the governor calls at the last second to stop your execution. You are subsequently released later that night. The only problem is, after seven years of incarceration, you’ve managed to ruin that kick-ass physique you’ve sculpted in your prison cell with one goddamn meal. So, you need to get your ass to the gym.

But, nobody wants to go to the gym without the proper soundtrack. Back before I dropped my iPod while on a treadmill and made the mistake of quickly bending down to pick it up before turning off the machine and got shot five feet back on my ass and left with a bruised patella and a heap load of humiliation (100 percent true story — I saved face, though. I climbed back on and finished that run, goddamnit, never mind that I couldn’t climb a flight of stairs for a week) I used to put together a gym mix, which I’d change up every other week or so. There’s a complex art to the gym mix — you want to pump yourself up, but you have to backload the fist-pumping songs until the end of the mix, lest you wear yourself out twenty minutes in and are left with Elliot Smith’s “Miss Misery” to bring you home. It’s not a good scene.

But, for the sake of this diversion, let’s assume your mix need only be five songs. What are you gonna put on it to ensure that you make it to the cool-down phase, when the Crash Test Dummies “God Shuffled his Feet,” is the appropriate tune?

Here we go:

1. “April Fool,” Soul Asylum.
2. “He Got Game,” Public Enemy.
3. “The Rest Will Follow,” … And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead.
4. “Underground,” Ben Folds Five.
5. “Big Time,” Peter Gabriel.

i got nothing. i don't do gyms. but that story about the treadmill warmed my heart. personal humiliation always makes me smile. thank you dustin.

Posted by: kb at July 9, 2007 3:26 PM

I don't have a gym mix because I am poor, but I do have a running mix. Perennials include:

1. "Irreplaceable" - Beyonce
2. "Still Dirrty" - Christina Aguilera
3. "No Culture Icons" - The Thermals
4. "Watch the Tapes" - LCD Soundsystem
5. "Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole" - Martha Wainwright

Posted by: Brenda at July 9, 2007 3:27 PM

"The Lovecats" - the Cure
"Beat it" Michael Jackson
"Girls Just Want to have Fun" - Cyndi Lauper
"Personal Jesus" - Depeche Mode
"Dancing with Myself" - Billy Idol

(My primary form of exercise is dancing like a fool. preferably on a street corner with a boombox and a group of other crazies)

Black Friday Rule by Flogging Molly

Bombs over Baghdad by Outkast

99 Problems from the Grey Album

Rapture Riders by Blondie/The Doors

Bleed American by Jimmy Eat World

Now I actually have to go the gym.... damn you, Pajiba.

Posted by: Jen at July 9, 2007 3:29 PM

Happiness - Regurgitator

Can't Stop [hee!]- Jacksoul

Everything's Not Lost - Coldplay

Sugar, We're Going Down - Fall Out Boy

Evil - Interpol

Sure I'm a dork for liking these songs but they all have a pretty solid and consistant beat that you can run in time to, which is helpful.

Posted by: Christin at July 9, 2007 3:30 PM

Fell in Love with a Girl is definitely on mine too.

1. Wilco - I'm Always in Love
2. Everybody Else - Meat Market
3. Phantom Planet - Big Brat
4. Ben Folds Five - Sports and Wine
5. White Stripes - Fell in Love with a Girl

This would probably change every week, though. Usually I just put on The Strokes.

Posted by: Lucie at July 9, 2007 3:34 PM

IRL I have three workout mixes (so far), each of them 100+ songs, and always on shuffle. So to pick 5 songs is a challenge for me, but here goes...

1. Unbreakable - Alicia Keys
2. Change - Joy Denalane
3. Humpty Dance - Digital Underground
4. What's Your Fantasy - Ludacris
5. Freak Daddy - Mos Def

Posted by: MDA at July 9, 2007 3:36 PM

I only listen to music while I'm warming up - I have a tendency to drop weights if I get too involved in the rhythm of things. The warm up tunes get the cardio going (particularly since my warm up is practically dancing anyway).

Sweet Lullaby - Deep Forest
Smooth - Santana
Just Another Day - Jon Secada
I Shall Sing - Art Garfunkel
Caminando Por La Calle - Gipsy Kings

I cool down to Ian Anderson's Twelve Divinities...

Posted by: funtime42 at July 9, 2007 3:37 PM

Oh man, I struggle with this one every week. Its a difficult task to balance lyrics with bass line, top 40s with classic rock. Beyonce or Madge, Kanye or The Boss? Madonna usually wins at least one round. Really, my prefernce is always for dance-y, and if you can't satisfy a certain craving for inspid pop while at the gym, then when can you?

1. "We Built This City on Rock and Roll" - Jefferson Starship (Shut up, its gooood)
2. "Jumpin' Jumpin" - Destiny's Child
3. "Hips Don't Lie" - Shakira
4. "Like a Prayer" - Madonna
5. "Ignition" - R Kelly (for the cool down)

Posted by: Leah at July 9, 2007 3:38 PM

All you need is the album Cross by Justice

Posted by: missmle at July 9, 2007 3:40 PM

1. Pearl Jam - Do the Evolution
2. The Knife - We Share Our Mother's Health
3. Rob Zombie - Superbeast
4. Smashing Pumpkins - The End is the Beginning...
5. (cooldown) Iron & Wine - Boy with a Coin

Posted by: twig at July 9, 2007 3:41 PM

I have a bunch of crap on a shuffle that I listen to at the gym - here are five that I can think of

5 Million Ways to Kill a CEO - The Coup
Black Sweat - Prince
My Perogative - Britney Spears version
American Idiot - Green Day
Green Lightening - House of Large Sizes

Posted by: seaturtles at July 9, 2007 3:42 PM

"LDN" - Lily Allen

"Promiscuous" - Nelly Furtado (I know, I know...but good lord, it makes me do high kicks!)

"Good and Evil" - David Byrne

"Twist" - Goldfrapp (Jacques Lu Cont remix)

"Standing In The Way of Control" - The Gossip

Posted by: AL at July 9, 2007 3:44 PM

I don't do the gym much, but I run outside a lot. Here're some of the best songs to run to:

1. Invincible - OK Go

2. Mercy Me - Alkaline Trio

3. Fit But You Know It - The Streets

4. Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt - We Are Scientists

5. Paralyzed - Rock Kills Kid

Bonus: I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor - Arctic Monkeys

Posted by: crafty at July 9, 2007 3:45 PM

1. The Garden - Mirah
2. Make Up - Elefant
3. Always (remix) - Rilo Kiley
4. Feel Good Hit of the Fall - !!!
5. Move Your Feet - Junior Senior

I kinda cheated, 'cause a friend made me a mix CD with these songs on it. It wasn't intended as a "workout" mix though, it was more of a "don't be sad about your puppy dying" mix. Aww, I love her.

Posted by: Oh oh! at July 9, 2007 3:45 PM

What mix? You put on Michael Jackson's "Thriller" or The Boss' "Born in the USA" or a Barry White compilation. Revs you up to mellow you out.

Posted by: rudy at July 9, 2007 3:46 PM

1. Ellen Allien - "Naked Rain"
2. Bjork - "I Miss You"
3. At The Gates - "Under A Serpent Sun"
4. the Dillinger Escape Plan - "43% Burnt"
5. the Rapture - "House Of Jealous Lovers"

And that "Plague Soundscapes" album by the Locust.

Posted by: Jessica at July 9, 2007 3:46 PM

Green Day's American Idiot. That's all you need. Play it straight through and it's got the perfect arrangement of fist pumping songs and slow moments to give you breathers in between.

Posted by: Riles at July 9, 2007 3:47 PM

1. Da Funk - Daft Punk
2. The Test - Chemical Brothers
3. Bitches - Mindless Self Indulgence
4. Bulls on Parade - Rage Against the Machine
5. Declare Independence - Bjork

(I like to be an angry girl while I'm working out.)

Posted by: b at July 9, 2007 3:48 PM

1. Oxygene 3 - Jean Michel Jarre
2. Sweet Home Chicago - Blues Brothers
3. Sing, Sing, Sing (With A Swing) 1938 Carnagie Hall recording - Benny Goodman
4. Rock This Town - Stray Cats
5. No One Lives Forever - Oingo Boingo

Posted by: Tree at July 9, 2007 3:49 PM

Be - Common

Go - Common

Bullet and a Target - Citizen Cope (which is usually on repeat for a run as it just so happens to be the perfect rhythm for my stride)

Go To Mexico - Cassandra Wilson

Stop Breaking Down - White Stripes

Posted by: Beckylooo at July 9, 2007 3:50 PM

I've just got two that always work for me, and even then, only when they're played together and in the right order.

Von Bondies - "C'mon, C'mon"
Travis - "Somewhere Else"

C'mon is pretty obviously good for working out, but "Somewhere Else" is just a great follow up to sustain the high.

Posted by: Erik at July 9, 2007 3:53 PM

1. Been there all the time - Dinosaur Jr.
2. Huddle Formation - The Go! Team
3. No Cars Go - Arcade Fire
4. Last Dinosaur - The Pillows
5. The Prayer - Bloc Party

Posted by: Fatboyinawagon at July 9, 2007 3:54 PM

Start the Commotion - Wiseguys
Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel
Up on the Hill Where they do the Boogie - John Hartford
Death by Triple Fiddle - Edgar Meyer, Joshua Bell, Sam Bush and Mike Marshall
Delirious - Prince

I can only listen to music at the gym now that I've gotten over the weirdness of not being perfectly in step with the music. Murdering my inner drum major made it a hell of a lot easier to put together a fun gym mix.

Posted by: mezzomom at July 9, 2007 3:57 PM

"Block Rockin' Beats" - The Chemical Brothers
"Give You More" - Taxi Doll
"Hella Good" - No Doubt
"I'm Shipping Up to Boston" - Dropkick Murphys
"Operate" - Peaches

Posted by: Nika at July 9, 2007 3:57 PM

oh dear, here we go:

1. "I'm Walkin on Sunshine" - Katrina and the Waves (I know, I suck)
2. "Walking on Stones" Stellamaris EP (I'm a slow ass runner)
3. "Fire Escape" - Ivison
4. APC (pretty much any song - also, great kata-music)
5. "I Shot John Lennon" The Cranberries (I once made one of my students puke doing shotgun roundhouse kicks up and down the room to this song, thus, it has a soft spot in my heart)

Posted by: Stella at July 9, 2007 3:59 PM

Sisters of Mercy - "temple of love"
Underworld - "cowgirl"
Beastie Boys - "intergalactic"
New Pornographers - "use it"
Polyphonic Spree - "light and day"

All have big beats, a decently fast rhythm, and are 'anthemic' enough to push you through a workout.

Posted by: AbundantChoice at July 9, 2007 4:00 PM

1. "The Prayer"- Bloc Party

2. "Must be the Moon"- !!!

3. "No Sleep Tonight"- The Faders (Thank you, "Veronica Mars" Soundtrack)

I just can't help myself. I know no self-respecting metalhead admits to loving this one, but I do goddammit! And I'll treadmill your face if you say otherwise.

Warning: Side effects may include yelling with headphones on, and/or aggressive word use.

I'm surprised that only one person mentioned "Bombs Over Baghdad" by Outkast.

That's the ultimate work-out song.

Posted by: Dre at July 9, 2007 4:33 PM

Step 1 - make them turn off the throbbing, wordless dance music
Step 2 - TVs should show ballgames only - repeats OK in the mornings if Eurpoean stuff is unavailable

White Stripes Hardest Button to Button (Fell In Love with A Girl works)
New Pornographers Use It + Sing me Spanish Techno

I'm so glad you chose this subject. A few weeks ago, a co-worker asked us all for a list of those songs that inspire and motivate us. She is training for a charity fundraiser marathon and wanted something to help her train. Some people took her request to mean inspirational music, while others suggested work-out, training with a beat music. She got everything from "Wind Beneath My Wings," to "Billie Jean." I have the reputation for liking less popular music,(read old)and I suggested "Holding out for a Hero," "That's Life," and "Sing,Sing,Sing." I was gratified to see the Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall version of "Sing,Sing,Sing" cited above.
Ever since she asked for this, I have wondered how Pajibans would have responded. I think this diversion answers my question.

"Pardon Me" - Incubus

Good music is SO a must for a good workout. Love this diversion!
Just one small contribution from my workout mix:

1-5) The Polyphonic Spree - "Wait" EP.

Unflinchingly upbeat. 2 originals, and 3 fab covers - they turn Nirvana's "Lithium" into a brilliant, sunny, anthemic masterpiece... if they can make *Nirvana* practically joyful, they can keep my lazy butt moving.

I'd love to cheat and put Aesop Rock's workout mix he made for Nike, but I guess I'll put 5 songs instead.

You're Freakin Me Out Girl- Wired All Wrong
Just Like You Imagined- Nine Inch Nails
Telegram- Saul Williams
Earth Intruders- Bjork
Needle in the Camel's Eye- Brian Eno

The same awfully embarassing thing happened to me about a month ago. Damn ipod! Though it was not worse than the time my glasses fell on the threadmill and I had to ask someone to find them for me.

I got like 300 tracks on my workput playlist, bu the very best are

Rooftops - Lostprophets
Vox (Tom Middleton Mix) - Sarah McLachlan
TKO - Le Tigre
Souvenirs - Architecture in Helsinki
Light and Day - the Polyphonic Spree

- "Got To Get You Into My Life" - Earth Wind & Fire

- "Body Movin'" - Beastie Boys

- "Silly Ho" - TLC

- "Work It" Missy Elliot

- "Ray of Light" - Madonna

Indeed, I am also of the too poor to do much more than run outside, and when I do I usually just make a playlist entirely of Girl Talk. but if I had to make a playlist of just five randoms, I'd go with...

"In This Together" Apoptygma Berzerk

"She Wants to Move" N.E.R.D

"Got Glint?" Chemical Brothers

"Rock Music" The Pixies

"Ladybird" Ladytron

And for the cool-down walk-it-off, either "When I Come Around" by Green Day out of nostalgia for the video or "Kashmir" by Zeppelin for the gravitas.

Posted by: Barabajagal at July 9, 2007 7:07 PM

Origa: "Rise"

Nine Inch Nails: "Ruiner"

Daft Punk: "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger"

Gwen Stefani: "What You Waiting For"

Rob Zombie: "Dragula" (The Matrix remix)

Posted by: Steen at July 9, 2007 7:19 PM

Seriously guys,

I like Wilco as much as the next guy, but when it comes to listening to music at the gym, I need something that will keep my fat ass running.

1. "Black History Month (Sammy Danger Remix)" - DFA 1979
2. "Jesus Walks" - Kanye West
3. "Fat Cats, Bigga Fish" - The Coup
4. "Work on You" - MSTRKRFT
5. "Eye Examination" - Del tha Funkee Homosapien

Sorry, I got nothing but this comment: people in Brazil should REALLY read this page, and I mean quick. You just can't work out anywhere here unless there's some crappy techno going on. It's like those dancing cokes.

If any setlist mentioned above comes up in a Brazilian gym at any time of day, people will instantly stop doing their thing and start yelling at you. True story as well.

All of these songs are from musicals. I admit that I am a loser.

1. Totally Fucked-- Spring Awakening

2. Urgence-- Dracula: Entre l'amour et la Mort

3. The Lady's Got Potential-- Evita (the movie version)

4. Footloose-- Footloose (the broadway version)

5. Rent-- Rent

Don't judge me.

I'm all about needing the musical motivation when I'm running, so my workout mix is full of the loud, angry and fast stuff.

Particular favourites include:
"Judith": A Perfect Circle
"Buck Dich": Rammstein
"The New Shit": Marilyn Manson
"Bad Blood": Ministry
"Electric Head (pt.2)": White Zombie
"Faster": Manic Street Preachers
"Good Morning Beautiful": Deftones

The problem I have had recently is that I get too psyched up by the music and push myself a bit too hard, resulting in me nearly falling off the treadmill because I'm seeing spots.
What can I say, I love my tunes!

Posted by: Claire at July 9, 2007 7:44 PM

During long runs for marathon training last year, this was my usual opening:

1. Keep Me - The Black Keys
2. MLK / Where The Streets Have No Name (Superbowl 35 Halftime) - U2
3. Thunderstruck - AC/DC
4. Animals - Nickelback (I'm not proud, but the cadence is perfect for hills)
5. More Than A Feeling - Boston (cooldown)

Posted by: The Judge at July 9, 2007 7:59 PM

Ooh I like this question!

For the perfect 30 min run on the treadmill: Panic! at the Disco

For everything else:
1. Jesus Walks -Kanye
2. You Shook Me All Night Long -AC/DC
3. We Run This -Missy Elliot
4. Lose Yourself -Eminem
5. Freedom -George Michael

I think this could also double as my guilty pleasure list

First of all, I'd like to say how weird it is that someone is saying how much they love to trod a treadmill listening to a song by the boys who used to make me my coffee every morning when I lived in Austin (those "...Trail of Dead" blokes). And how onetime there was a sub for my usual yoga instructor and she played that Alanis Morrissette song about "thanking India" and I had to leave the room to go throw up. I was four months pregnant, but still...
5) "Still", Geto Boys
4) "Still Dre (instrumental)", Dr. Dre
3) "99 Problems," DJ Danger Mouse
2) "The Way I Am", Eminem
1) "Eye of the Tiger", Survivor

Posted by: YourMother at July 9, 2007 8:10 PM

I just wanted to say, why the hate for dance music? Not all songs that go thump in the night are automatically bad.

Posted by: Amanda at July 9, 2007 8:14 PM

Already posted my list, but I just have to give a shout out to ray-ray and mention that I've had a running pseudo-fight w/ a friend of mine ( a personal trainer) about how little (my side) the gym improves upon the run-outside-and-invest-in-free-weights method of exercise; yet the cost of a gym is friggin ridiculous (even factoring in insurance discounts) in comparison. The only thing the argument has yielded as of yet is a new definition for the phrase "street cred." This may not be the best site to bring it up, but the majority here seems to lend itself to the gym method. I'm just curious what kind of answers a "Gym or Street?" mass discourse would yield.

Posted by: Barabajagal at July 9, 2007 8:14 PM

I do a Kathy Smith aerobics video at home (kind of lame-sounding, I know, but it kicks my ass and cost $12), so I don't have a gym soundtrack per se. However, I do know what songs get me wanting to high-kick and air-punch and whatnot.

1. So What'cha Want, Beastie Boys (I put a Beastie Boys song on pretty much every playlist, so hey. Alternately, Super Disco Breakin'.)

2. Fresh Azimiz, Bow Wow

3. My Humps, Black Eyed Peas (They serve a purpose.)

4. Forgot About Dre, Dr. Dre & Eminem

5. Sugar, We're Going Down, Fall Out Boy

Well, it's a workout mix, not a celebration of fine music. Most uptempo Destiny's Child songs work well, too.

Posted by: Katie at July 9, 2007 8:54 PM

Saltimbanco - From Cirque du Soleil's show of the same name
I Don't Feel Like Dancing - The Scissor Sisters
Sukie in the Graveyard - Belle and Sebastian
Slide - The Goo Goo Dolls
Another One Bites the Dust/Any Up Tempo Queen

Don't judge me.

(And Ella, I'll try Totally Fucked as good exercise music, sometimes I use the Bitch of Living.)

Oh my god, I can only pick five songs? I have 98 songs on my iPod - that's 6.6 hours of music, and yeah, I'd never work out for 6.6 hours straight, but I can get a good six workouts out of my mix without having to listen to any song twice. Five favorites?

- "Toxic," Britney Spears
- "SexyBack," Justin Timberlake
- "Pump It," Black-Eyed Peas
- "I Believe in a Thing Called Love," The Darkness
- "Higher Ground," Red Hot Chili Peppers

Posted by: Ariel at July 9, 2007 9:32 PM

i dont use the gym but when i have a running mix that i use to compare times as well as keep me going.

1. house of wolves-my chemical romance
2. kill caustic-AFI
3. pump it-black eyed peas
4. i believe in a thing called love-the darkness
5. this aint a scene it's an arms race-Fall out boy

the last two make me laugh which generally helps stave off exhaustion.

Posted by: dass at July 9, 2007 9:35 PM

My standard 50 minute workout play list is 12 songs, here are a few highlights.

Toche - Godsmack, first song, great tune to warm up and get going with

Thunderstruck - AC/DC, next song in, pick up the pace for a bit (4:52 to be exact)

The Outsider - A Perfect Circle, another pickin' it up song.

Machinehead - Bush, If that don't get you going...

Toxicity - System of a Down, last song before the cooldown.

I know the list is suppose to be 5, but can't help myself, also in there is some Audioslave, Seether, Melallica, REM, and King Swamp.

Posted by: BillMc at July 9, 2007 9:42 PM

Paul van Dyk's The Politics of Dancing, Vol. 1,

and a pile of late-90's club techno that I love for heart-pumping nostalgia

Posted by: Salieri2 at July 9, 2007 10:23 PM

1-"Make Me Sweat" Basement Jaxx

2-"4 Words to Choke Upon" Bullet for my Valentine

3-"Feel Alive" Benny Benassi

4-"My Leftovers" Porcelain and the Tramps

5-"Sexy Fuck" Who's Who

Switching it up between house/trance and metal seems to keep me extremely motivated.

Posted by: Alyssa at July 9, 2007 10:23 PM

I usually listen to Sigur Ros a lot when I'm working out, even the slower songs. Makes everything feel more epic, less like I'm a bumbling idiot.

1.Hoppipolla
2.Untitled (#1)
3.Starálfur
4.Glosoli
5.Hufupukar

4. Funny Break - Orbital
5. Children - Robert Miles

I use a very small gym (it used to be a garage), but the owner always has on classical music. If he wasn't my coach, I might kill him.

1. Can't Stop - Red Hot Chili Peppers (nice work-up)
2. Wildcat (E*vax remix) - Ratatat (just good energy throughout)
3. Da Funk - Daft Punk (perfect, great steady rhythm)
4. The Archers' Bows Have Broken - Brand New (it's got it for when you have to dig)
5. Sink Hole - Drive-By Truckers (and let's kick for the finish)

Posted by: JustJoe at July 10, 2007 12:21 AM

In no order...

1. Firestarter - Prodigy
2. Lose Yourself - Eminem
3. Twenty Five Miles - Edwin Star
4. You Ougtha Know - Alanis
5. Bolero - Ravel

Ecclectic...but it works!

1. Stop-The Spice Girls (I am so sad to admit that and if asked in person would never confess to it.)
2. Nothing Better-The Postal Service
3. Matisyahu-Dispatch the Troops
4. The Working Title-The Mary Getaway
5. Arcade Fire-Intervention

Posted by: Morgan at July 10, 2007 12:33 AM

My workout playlist is called "Work It Out," and that has to be said with a little swivel of the neck a la Tyra Banks. It includes:
1) Janie Jones, The Clash
2) Henrietta, The Fratellis
3) Huddle Formation, The Go! Team (seriously, best ever song for the stairmaster)
4) Killing, The Rapture (1, 2, 3, 4, kick that fucker out the door!)
5) DARE, Gorillaz

And cheeky number six is Rebellion (Lies) by Arcade Fire.

Hmmm...all these suggestions might renew my gym enthusiasm...

Posted by: Rebecca at July 10, 2007 12:57 AM

1. Save it for Later - The English Beat
2. Dig Me Out - Sleater-Kinney
3. Decent Days and Nights - The Futureheads
4. Comatose - Pearl Jam
5. Sexy M.F - Prince

Posted by: laura at July 10, 2007 1:04 AM

Lately my workout mix has been the fine album 'Sing, But Keep Going' by a band called Sherwood. I don't need music to get my heart rate up, just to keep me happy enough to continue punishing my body. This album is so upbeat, if you were in a bad mood and someone put it on, you'd be furious with them for even attempting to bring cheer into their life.

Posted by: Elon at July 10, 2007 1:11 AM

Superbeast - Rob Zombie
Fury of the Storm - Dragonforce
Slave to the Grind - Skid Row
Cowboys from Hell - Pantera
Motivation - Sum 41

Posted by: Dave at July 10, 2007 1:13 AM

I find that when I go to the gym, I hate having a bunch of short songs, because it makes the time seem like it's going a lot slower. So I put really long instrumental tracks in there so I just get lost in the music and don't focus on finishing the time on the treadmill. That's just my preference.

Posted by: Ben at July 10, 2007 1:59 AM

For weightlifting there is NOTHING like a huge bass and some badass hip hop. It's not even close, i can add pounds listening to this.

Patiently Waiting - Fiddy + Em

Still D.R.E. - Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg

Knuck If you Buck - Crime Mob

Till I collapse - Eminem

Neva Eva - Trillville

1. call on me - eric prydz
2. black history month - death from above 1979
3. turn me up - benny bennassi
4. get out of my life now - paul oakenfold
5. you could have it so much better - franz ferdinand

i could probably think of many, many, more, but i won't get into that.

Posted by: HK at July 10, 2007 3:35 AM

I love this. I spend more time putting together workout mixes than actually working out.

fave five, for grinning like an idiot at the gym, in no particular order:

1. I've Just Seen A Face - Beatles
2. Ta Doleur - Camille
3. Mary Mack - Great Big Sea
4. Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick - Ian Drury and the Blockheads
5. Rainbow Connection, as performed by Me First! and the Gimme Gimmes

a bonus for cooldown (to take the edge off): Strawberry Fields, covered by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs

Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin
(Baby I've Got You) On My Mind - Powderfinger
FIGJAM - ButterFinger
Sexxlaws - Beck
Authority Song - John Mellencamp (shut up)
Every Day Should Be A Holiday - Dandy Warhols
Scratch My Back - The Sharp

1. Creeping Up the Back Stairs - The Fratellis

2. Blue Orchid - White Stripes

3. Ain't No Other Man - Christina Aguilera

4. Momentum - Aimee Mann

5. 10AM Automatic - The Black Keys

The tunes are just for weights, though. I have to listen to a podcast of some sort for cardio (usually Dan Savage), otherwise I get too bored to finish.

Posted by: The Jimbles at July 10, 2007 7:03 AM

My work out mix doubles as both running and boxing training (when I actually get off my ass to do any) so the songs go from combative right through to seriously cheesy.

1. Dirt off your Shoulder/Lying From You (Jay-Z and Linkin Park)
2. The Ballad of Chasey Lane (Bloodhound gang)
3. Feel Good inc. (The Gorillaz)
4. Dance Commander (Electric six)
5. Leroy (Wheatus)

I really should exercise more... wow. Pajiba: good for both body and mind.

3. You Can't Stop the Beat from Hairspray
4. Kylie by Akcent
5. Try Again by Aaliyah

On a scale of 1-10 how lame is it that I listen to talk radio while I'm on the treadmill? I find that if I listen to something really interesting (I usually download podcasts of The Rachel Maddow Show from Air America) then I'm distracted from the intense desire to STOP RUNNING :)

Posted by: bluestar at July 10, 2007 9:11 AM

If I may also add Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up". That is a good workout song.

Posted by: Melody at July 10, 2007 9:12 AM

I'm a little disappointed in the choices. Not to say they are bad, but I'm very particular about my gym mixes and I was hoping to get some new inspiration. I haven't really found anything yet, but no worries, just differences in tastes.

Here is my five:

Def Leppard - Armageddon It
Police - Roxanne
Heart - Alone
Nirvana - Heart Shaped Box
Pearl Jam - Even Flow

1. Bitches - Mindless Self Indulgence
2. Emotion Sickness - Silverchair
3. Der Letzte Tag (Grizzly Mix) - Tokio Hotel
4. Gimme Danger - Iggy and the Stooges
5. Ramalama (Bang Bang) - Roisin Murphy

Those are the five that get rotated through most often, at any rate.

Posted by: Anne at July 10, 2007 11:18 AM

perfect timing... i was just looking to make anew workout mix myself.

here's five old favorites-

*Ted Leo and The Pharmacists- Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone? (I'd say Me and Mia as well, but it kinda feels wrong once you realize its about eating disorders)

*Wilco- Shot in the Arm (Live) (the version on Kicking Television has an amazing piano riff at the end that gives you that extra burst to keep going)

*David Bowie- Queen Bitch (ok, maybe I pretend to be training for Team Zissou with this... I see no problem with that)

*The Shins- Kissing The Lipless (perfect buildup and drive to it... i used to really like this on the stationary bike for whatever reason)

*Art Brut- Good Weekend (because nothing motivates like ridiculous swagger and sexual bravado by way of cheesy guitar licks)

Also, I discovered during last night's workout that the rapid fire sampling blitz of Girl Talk is ideal for those with short attention spans on the treadmill.

2) He's a Pirate (Ship Ahoy Tribal Remix) - Chris Joss & Klaus Badelt

3) I'm Shipping Up to Boston - Dropkick Murphys

4. Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name Of (this song makes my blood boil, perfect for the home stretch)

Okay, so my dumb ass dropped my ipod over a year ago and cracked the screen. It still works, but I can't see the song that's playing and I can't change the settings - it's stuck on shuffle through the entire library, which contains a range of music from Kenny Rogers to Ice Cube to CCR to the Supremes to Metallica and back again. I'm pretty much at its mercy when I'm at the gym. However, if I could actually still CHOOSE my songs, they'd be along the lines of:

1. "Outsiders" - Franz Ferdinand
I just cannot hear this song without shaking my ass. It's impossible, I've tried.

2. "Reptilia" - the Strokes
This song is also rather fun to drive to...watch out for CHP tho..

3. "Wheelz of Steel" - Outkast
See above. Hee!

4. "Cuntry Boys and City Girlz" The Fratellis
I LOVE THIS BAND. LOVE LOVE LOVE. I cannot stop listening to them right now. Forkeeps: "Chelsea Dagger" is my 2nd fave song after this one. :-)

5. "C'mon C'mon" the Von Bondies
This song always pumps me up. I could run miles to it alone!

4.)The UglyHarts - "B.F.F.L"

5.)AC/DC - "If You Want Blood (You Got It)

Mainly I listen to either my crappy old pop punk when running (Fall Out Boy, Panic!, etc.) or some of my current standbys.

1. New Pornographers - Use It and Sing Me Spanish Techno (snaps to the person who listed those two).

2. The Thermals - Pillar of Salt and Here's Your Future.

3. Mates of State - Fraud in the 80s, Like U Crazy, For the Actor, So Many Ways.

4. Phoenix - Consolation Prizes.

5. Voxtrot Voxtrot Voxtrot. They're not very loud or anthemic, but they tend to have a strong driving rhythm in their music that usually fits my stride perfectly.

Geez, I'm wondering what some of you actually do at the gym? Sit in the sauna? These 5 songs are when I'm finishing a 10K and am trying to sprint out the last mile and everything in my body and mind is telling me "It's ok, you can just walk the rest." But these songs make me reach down into the bile of my soul and internally primal scream my brains out until I get to the finish line:
Feels Good, Inc. - Gorillaz
Hella Good - Gwen Stefani
Here it Goes Again - Ok, Go!
Crazy in Love - Beyonce
The Way You Move - Outkast
