Up Down Up Down Left Right Left Right B A Start

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Comment Diversions | Comments (181)

Before we get to today’s comment diversion, a quick note to congratulate Sean Whaley, who won this year’s NCAA College Basketball bracket. He not only predicted the winner of the tournament, but the entire final four. He pulled off the victory by a mere two points. Among the writers here, The TV Whore managed to pull off third place overall, a mere four points behind Sean. Congratulations, Sean. $50 and a shiny new T-shirt (once the new one is designed) will be on its way to you soon.

In this week’s comment diversion, we’re going to explore a seldom spoken of topic around these parts, though God knows many of you know enough about it. Video games. It’s a free-for-all discussion, but I’ll pose this to get you started: What is your all-time favorite video game?

I have an unfortunate addictive personality, and video-games do a number on me. Once I begin a game, I stop eating, sleeping, and interacting with the real world until I’m finished. That’s why I haven’t played anything besides Madden in about a decade, since Earthworm Jim stole nearly three uninterrupted days of my life. And that’s why I hate video games: I have no ability to prioritize them around my life.

Contra. Once I learned how to beat it without the Konami code, I felt I had made up for an entire childhood of dying on the second level.

ZELDA. original NES.
Castlevania runs a close second.
Contra and Mike Tysons Punch Out tie for 3rd.

Posted by: roodle at April 8, 2009 4:20 PM

WOW (puts on nerd glasses)
Super Metriod was incredible, but Prince of Persia Sands of time was just a joy to play.
I cannot leave off ICO as it was a game of such wonder.
If this blog or site starts reviewing games, I will have to bring extra under garments to work!

Posted by: badalamenti at April 8, 2009 4:21 PM

Wow, really Jim? i could never do that..

Posted by: roodle at April 8, 2009 4:21 PM

Video games of great worth:

Bioshock, Rule of Rose, Shadow of the Colossus (and Ico), Katamari Damacy. World Ends with You for the DS.

I usually love best whatever enjoyable game I just finished playing. I really enjoyed Assassin's Creed. I'm looking forward to Bioshock 2 and Uncharted 2.

Posted by: twig at April 8, 2009 4:21 PM

Super Mario brother world.I loved opening up all the secret levels, it confuse me a little why they had the best Yoshi (Blue flying Yoshi) on only the first or second level of the star road though.

Posted by: cockroach at April 8, 2009 4:22 PM

*confused, damnit!

Posted by: cockroach at April 8, 2009 4:22 PM

I was also a big fan of the old LucasArts PC games - Loom, Maniac Mansion, Full Throttle. Good times.

Posted by: twig at April 8, 2009 4:22 PM

three uninterrupted days of my life.

Seriously?!? I lost two months to Baldur's Gate II, spinning my sleep cycle around the clock by playing it 20 hours straight and then sleeping 10 hours for weeks on end. Beautiful, epic story.

Planescape Torment has perhaps the best story I've ever read/played. I read somewhere that there were over 200,000 words of description and dialog in the game (that's the rough equivalent of an 800 page novel).

Fallout and Fallout II are brilliant. Deus Ex as well. I was furious when the pilot died.

More recently, I loved Knights of the Old Republic (now that's a motherfucking Star Wars story, George Lucas you pompous old twat). Mass Effect was a bloody fun story, though we'll see how well it holds up with the scheduled sequels (it's supposed to be a trilogy).

Holy crap, I just outed myself as an utter video game geek. Was this post just a honey pot to snare people like me?

Posted by: Steven Lloyd Wilson at April 8, 2009 4:23 PM

I loved playing Final Fantasy VIII, I spent so many hours playing it that it took a long while on the internet for me to stop reading GF as Guardian Force; I did give up eventually, on my second major attempt of completing it (the memory card crashing after I finally defeated the colour coordinated aliens is not a happy memory)

Posted by: cockroach at April 8, 2009 4:27 PM

legend of zelda: ocarina of time nearly caused me to drop out of first semester of law school.

i never finished that game. i even bought the nintendo guide. i may have even scoured a video game chatroom for help. but this was back before broadband and dialing up on my modem so i could ask a bunch of 14 year olds for help seemed ridiculous when i was in my most difficult year of law school.

so i gave up zelda and focused on kicking ass at mariokart. when i finally learned how to jump the barrier in wario stadium, i knew i had arrived.

i gave away my N64 a few years ago to goodwill because i thought, "really, you're never going to play this." now that my ass got laid off by the man, i REALLY wish i still had it.

Posted by: stopthemadness at April 8, 2009 4:28 PM

Halo and Halo II. If only for multiplayer versus the spouse. I so kicked his ass one time. It was awesome.

Childhood? Frogger for the Atari. It was fabulous.

Zelda for SNES stole 2 years of my life. I hate that game.

Tetris 2 I once played for 6 straight hours. After level 32, you cannot start back at any higher level so I had no choice to keep playing. I reached level 75 before I was forced to quit.

Posted by: Melody at April 8, 2009 4:29 PM

I don't know much about games. Growing up we had an even cheaper console than Atari, but I forget what it was called. Favorites ever are the typical old school ones for original Nintendo: Paperboy, Tetris, the first three Mario Brothers. And I loved the Jaws game, though god knows why.

For Sega, I loved the motorcycle game where you could upgrade to better bikes and beat people with chains. Road...something. Rash? I think Road Rash.

And a few weeks ago I was visiting my aunt and uncle in Delaware and me, my brother, and my brother-in-law spent five hours playing the Wii's Mario Kart with the wheel. That game is crazy awesome.

Posted by: Julie at April 8, 2009 4:30 PM

Agree with stipe on the KOTOR love.

Some could make the argument for Final Fantasy VII, but I'd have to say Half-Life.

Posted by: branded at April 8, 2009 4:31 PM

I'm gonna have to go with Super Mario World, Banjo-Kazooie, Kingdom Hearts, Bioshock, and to round it out to five, I'm gonna second twig on The World Ends With You.

Posted by: Jeremy Feist at April 8, 2009 4:31 PM

KOTOR WRECKED me circa 2004 or whenever the hell that came out. I refuse to look it up.

Fallout 3, Bioshock and Fable II kept me busy this past year. And oh yeah, GTAIV also pretty much ruined my personal life.

And now Street Fighter 4 took hold and just won't let go.

Posted by: annoyingmouse at April 8, 2009 4:32 PM

stopthemadness kicking ass at mariokart

Mariokart is pure brilliance in game form; whatever platform it's on, it's always win.

( Yoshi is my default player, don't know what that says about me...)

Posted by: cockroach at April 8, 2009 4:33 PM

OH! Crap, and I forgot to add Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker on to the list. Damn, knew I was forgetting something.

Posted by: Jeremy Feist at April 8, 2009 4:33 PM

I'm not big on video games, but only because so many fail to capture my attention. Here are my votes:

1. Zelda Ocarina of Time
2. Spyro the Dragon (laugh all you want, this game is so much fun!)

Posted by: Agent Scully at April 8, 2009 4:34 PM

Contra (NES) - I actually beat it without dying once
Zelda (NES) - the original and Link's Adventure
Eternal Darkness (GC) - creepy and well designed
System Shock 2 (PC) - Forerunner to Bioshock and infinitly better.
Super Mario 64 (N64) - I loved exploring that castle
Banjo Kazooie (N64) - The same nostalgia as Mario 64 except the worlds we were way better and more unique. Also the soundtrack was killer.
Casltevania: Symphony of the Night (PSX) - A game that I can still play through from start to finish in one long sitting. God, I still remember when I found out about the inverted castle for the first time. It was magical...

There's so many more...

Some of my favorites:

X-Com: UFO Defense Force

Civilization IV

Football Manager/Championship Manager Series

Half-Life 2

Current Favorite:

Actually, are there any Mario games that don't rock?

Posted by: cockroach at April 8, 2009 4:35 PM

I keep my life blissfully free of video games. The last video game that grabbed my attention was Tetris.

Posted by: tamatha at April 8, 2009 4:37 PM

"Actually, are there any Mario games that don't rock?"

Mario's Missing. fuck. That. Game.

Posted by: Bots at April 8, 2009 4:37 PM

My parents never let us have video games growing up, so I don't understand the appeal. I spent my youth playing outside and engaging in shenanigans the old fashioned way. Fight clubs, dice games, underground poker rings, cock fighting, good old fashioned high stakes Russian roulette in 'Nam... you know, kid stuff.

Posted by: Porkchop at April 8, 2009 4:38 PM

Oh sure, it's easy enough to say my all time favorite console is the Sega Dreamcast. That's a no-brainer - Illbleed, Samba de Amigo, that great Crazy Taxi port, Jet Grind Radio, Space Channel 5, the list goes on.

But a favorite game? Do I go with a game I admire but was horrible at, ala Illbleed? Or perhaps a game I play over and over and over again and never tire of, like Dance Dance Revolution (want specifics? DDR 5th Mix, Arcade) or Katamari Demacy? Or perhaps a game that has stood the test of time, like Tetris.

Fuck it. I love DDR and will always count it as my favorite video game. It can't stop falling in love with awful J-Pop and atrocious Euro/Dance-Pop covers.

Posted by: Robert at April 8, 2009 4:38 PM

Oh shi vidya games?

I like blowing shit up a little too much. Also this new gen shit can fuck off. I'd rather play my n64 than any of the new consoles. Mario Kart, Mario Party, Super Mario 64 and GoldenEye for the fucking win.

Posted by: Hurp Durp at April 8, 2009 4:40 PM

Call me a heathen because it's not an old game but Shadow of The Colossus became my life for a good long while as i insisted on beating every monster without dying in one sitting. Fucking impossible and probably took up ...five or six days of a summer holiday. If not much more.
Then again....i wnant to get married with the Tetris theme as my first dance song...

Posted by: Nadine at April 8, 2009 4:40 PM

TOEJAM & EARL!

Anyone?... Anyone?

I'll show myself out.

Posted by: jM at April 8, 2009 4:44 PM

Shadow of the Colossus is my favorite, because it's the only game I've ever played that can truly be called art.

Posted by: captaino at April 8, 2009 4:44 PM

I'll be a little different and name some that haven't been mentioned. Syberia (PC), Beyond Good and Evil (PC) and Psychonauts (Xbox) currently stand out in my memory.

Posted by: Gwenn at April 8, 2009 4:45 PM

Y'all got the kode wrong. It's:

Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start.

Posted by: Lucas at April 8, 2009 4:45 PM

"GoldenEye for the fucking win"

4 player split screen. Played that shit like a Motherfucking FIEND.

Also forgot to mention Shadow of the Colossus, superb game.

I also used to really be into the Splinter Cell series. Michael Ironside, anyone?

Posted by: annoyingmouse at April 8, 2009 4:45 PM

Fuck it, I add Perfect Dark to the list (N64 version). Now that game was nothing short of perfect, no pun intended, and it destroyed Goldeneye in every way possible.

Posted by: Gwenn at April 8, 2009 4:46 PM

Holy cow, how could I have forgotten Civilization? I played the original every moment of free time for two straight years. And Civ2 ... the WWII scenario alone I probably sunk 500 hours into. Civ3 never happened just like Star Trek V. Civ4 back to the awesome ... I didn't take classes that summer session of my master's program mostly because I was planning on playing Civ4.

Posted by: Steven Lloyd Wilson at April 8, 2009 4:46 PM

PONG

I got bored after that and haven't wasted my time since, (unless you consider posting on Pajiba wasting my time).

Posted by: BWeaves at April 8, 2009 4:47 PM

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. This game was my world in middle school. I have most of the music from it on my mp3 player right now.
One more thing...

Dear water temple,
FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU STAB STAB STAB
*bursts into tears*

Posted by: Dingles at April 8, 2009 4:47 PM

Favorite Game of All Time: Mega Man X. Cockroach, you're officially uninvited to my birthday. I mean really, FF8? Seriously? I turned that game off after half an hour of wishing it didn't exist.

Posted by: Lucas at April 8, 2009 4:48 PM

Donkey Kong Country. Back in 6th grade my best friend and I would play it all day. I would love to play that one again.

Posted by: ami at April 8, 2009 4:48 PM

OK...There is no easy way for me to do this than to break it down console by console.

Atari 2600 - Space Invaders and Pole Position (only 2 games I ever owned for it, or played on it)

NES - Zelda, Excitebike, Xexyz, PunchOut!

SNES - Mario Kart, Zelda (again), Super Mario World.

Genesis - Altered Beast, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Pit Fighter

3DO - Plumbers Don't Wear Ties (there was nudity in it!!)

Playstation - Resident Evil, FFVII, Intelligent Cube

Nintendo 64 - Zelda:Ocarina of Time (see a theme here?), WCW vs. N.w.O., Mario Kart 64

Sega Dreamcast - Soul Caliber, UFC, NFL2K

PS2 - Katamari, Guitar Hero 2, Metal Gear Solid

GameCube - Mario Sunshine, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Spongebob Squarepants

XBOX - Morrowind: Elder Scrolls, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six

XBOX 360 - Fallout 3, Oblivion: Elder Scrolls, Madden 09

PS3 - topo fucking expensive....

PC - Fallout, 7th Guest, Riven, Myst, DOOM, Quake, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Sim City 2 and Sim City 3000, and lastly....motherfucking 'Turtle Type' of floppy disk...and the original floppy version of Oregon Trail. IIE F.T.W.!!!

Posted by: PissBoy at April 8, 2009 4:49 PM

Hands down Wonder Boy from the Sega Master System (pre-Genesis). You couldn't save it, so you just had to learn to be good with the couple lives you had to beat the whole thing in one sitting. Once you figured out how to got through the final castle, it only took about 45 mintues.

And my middle school sleepovers were spent playing Golden Eye and Mortal Combat. Nothing like violence when you're hanging with your girlfriends.

Posted by: kelsy at April 8, 2009 4:52 PM

Panzer Dragoon Saga - little known, little played game for the Sega Saturn that was fucking unbelievable.

Resident Evil 4. The best of the series, although RE5 is giving it a run for its money right now.

Call of Duty 4

Burning Rangers, another little-known Saturn game.

The original Tomb Raider was the balls, the first of its kind.

Contra

Legend of Zelda (NES)

Rygar (NES)

Bioshock

Any of the Ratchet and Clank series - some of the best platforming ever.

Dark Castle on the Apple IIe

Posted by: TK at April 8, 2009 4:52 PM

Let's see:

Fiendish Freddy's Big Top O'Fun (Commodore 64)
Super Mario Brothers (Series)
Donkey Kong Country - my ring-tone is the water theme.
Diablo Series
Warcraft Series
Starcraft Series
Tetris
Oregon Trail - the Apple IIe version.
Kingdom Hearts I and II (what I'm a Disney fan)
Lego Star Wars for the Wii

I haven't played any new games for so long it's sad. But I'm a nerd so I know about all the games I'm missing. I have a list of games I plan on playing, someday.

I have an addictive personality, I loose all track of time when I'm playing, plus I work in IT and don't feel like playing on my computer when I get home.

Posted by: DoubleH at April 8, 2009 4:53 PM

Lucas FF8? Seriously? I turned that game off after half an hour of wishing it didn't exist.

But...but one of the first things you do is fight a Fluffer Mucking T-rex; how is that in anyway wrong?

Posted by: cockroach at April 8, 2009 4:53 PM

Shit, and Uncharted: Drakes Fortune on the PS3 was pretty amazing.

Posted by: TK at April 8, 2009 4:54 PM

And Lucs THANK YOU!!!! for getting the code right. I want to punch every fucker in the face who says it wrong...ESPECIALLY the hipster douchebags who own the fucking t-shirt that says "...B, A, Select, Start."

Select, start?

Select?

There was NO FUCKING SELECT in that code fuckers. Fuck you and your capitalization on childhood memories but being to concerned with 'cool' to actually remember it the right fucking way. If I had the 'Spray' gun right now from 3/4 of the way through level 1, you would be fucking dead! All of you.

Posted by: PissBoy at April 8, 2009 4:56 PM

Anyone else here think fucking PORTAL was one of the simplest yet utterly wonderful experiences in gaming ever?

Or did I overshoot that?

the cake is a lie...

Posted by: annoyingmouse at April 8, 2009 4:57 PM

Mario Kart: Double Dash
Super Smash Brothers
Devil May Cry
Final Fantasy 6
Pokemon Gold
Warcraft 3
Super Mario World

I hated Zelda. Yeah, I said it. I think I fell out of too many trees as a child, because I never understood it.

Posted by: Julie at April 8, 2009 5:00 PM

All I've ever really played is old-school Super Mario Bros, aside from one non-stop, headache-inducing night of Guitar Hero, and a few extremely frustrating nights of Super Smash Bros. I'll go with old-school, 2D Super Mario Bros.

Posted by: SaBrina at April 8, 2009 5:01 PM

Oh shit, I forgot that my friend had an Aladdin video game that was THE SHIT. I don't know which company made it, but I loved being able to swing off of awnings and steal bread.

Posted by: SaBrina at April 8, 2009 5:02 PM

Ack! I loved that game Sabrina! I think it was for Sega.

Posted by: Julie at April 8, 2009 5:04 PM

jM, I used to play Toe Jam & Earl on Sega Genesis... I especially liked the "Boogy Man." It was so weird, he would just run up to you and yell "Boogy Oogy Oogy Oogy" for no reason...

I spent way too many hours on the Sega Genesis in middle school. The original Mortal Kombat, Road Rash, Sonic the Hedgehog, even Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego. Good times. I think I still remember the "blood code" for Mortal Kombat... Up up left left A right down??? Is that right? Without it, it just made no sense... You can't rip a guy's trachea from his throat and expect it to be clean... You just can't...

Posted by: aww gee at April 8, 2009 5:05 PM

Galaga.

Oh my God, Leisure Suit Larry! I haven't thought about that game in forever!

Posted by: Lainey at April 8, 2009 5:05 PM

SaBrina I also liked Aladdin. My ex-brother-in-law had a Sega and I would play it every time I visited.

I also liked playing Echo on the Sega.

Posted by: DoubleH at April 8, 2009 5:06 PM

SaBrina You might want to check out New Super Mario Bros. for the DS, it's done 2.5D style (Ala Donkey Kong World)

Posted by: cockroach at April 8, 2009 5:06 PM

Last year I won a PS3 at a Christmas party at work, had a Epson projector and Yamaha sound system installed. Crank it up with Call to Duty and Resident Evil, the shit will blow your mind. I mainly use my PS3 to watch movies, but now I’m into gaming.

Posted by: Pookie at April 8, 2009 5:08 PM

It's totally Duck Hunt. My sister got so frustrated with that game she walked up and pressed the gun against the screen to shoot the ducks. My grandmother almost wet her pants she was laughing so hard.

I gave that system away in high school and regretted it almost immediately.

Posted by: Jeni at April 8, 2009 5:09 PM

I rented FF8 once and also dropped it like a bad habit. It was like "when the fuck does the game start? And how the hell does this work? I'm in a classroom?!"

I liked VII and X a lot. I played VII on lunch breaks from 2nd shift Wal-Mart, I'd dash home, get in 15-20 minutes, come back and play more for a few more hours. I stalled out on XII after I was just getting my ass handed to me in 30 seconds late in the game. Not fun, but I'm still looking forward to XIII. KOTOR's where I learned about modding, and half the damn fun of playing the game is giving your players ridiculous powers and ridiculous outfits.

With a few cheat codes "The Force Unleashed" is a hell of a lot of PS3 fun.

Also, Mario 2 is just the cutest fucking game ever. The dream credits at the end? Ohhhh, so good.

Posted by: Jay at April 8, 2009 5:09 PM

Man oh man, Ocarina and Goldeneye are the jam! I'm a pretty big nerd so pretty much all the Final Fantasy games ruled certain summers of mine. I've been dying to play games recently so my friend and I now own a Sega Megadrive. SONIC 3 WITH LOCK ON SONIC & KNUCKLES!!! I think I need to play that like right now. My brother and cousin had a thing for Golden Axe. Arg...

Anyone ever heard of Legend of Legaia on PS1??? I miss that game.

Posted by: vdo86 at April 8, 2009 5:09 PM

Wow, really Jim? i could never do that..

Takes a lot of tries, roodle. Am yet to get through the game without dying, but that'll be the next thing to try during video export downtime.

Posted by: Jim Doggie at April 8, 2009 5:11 PM

Fuck you and your capitalization on childhood memories but being to concerned with 'cool' to actually remember it the right fucking way.

I've seen a t-shirt for sale in Little Five Points (Hippies, Hipsters and Bums all together at once!) that read "I Ain't Scared Of No Ghosts".

It

SICKENING

Posted by: Jay at April 8, 2009 5:12 PM

Man, I'm totally leaving out some good older games:

Toejam and Earl
Ghostbusters II
fucking Sonic, obviously (I mean, cmon)
Earthworm Jim was pretty fun
Resident Evil 1-4
Twisted Metal 1, 2, and BLACK

I would add Mortal Kombat to that list, but I sucked at it and hated playing it. My cousins all played it and always wanted to play it and beat the shit out of me all the time.

But none of them played Street Fighter, so I Hodukened the shit out of them in return.

Posted by: annoyingmouse at April 8, 2009 5:13 PM

Anything Squaresoft/Square Enix, but especially the Final Fantasy series, Chrono series, and Kingdom Hearts series..and Secret of Evermore
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
Legend of Zelda series
Mario series
God of War and God of War II (and III...eventually)
Resident Evil franchise, especially 2 and 4...haven't played 5 yet
Mega Man series
Fallout series
Black Isle's suite of D&D-based games
Diablo series
Starcraft series
Warcraft series including WoW
Warhammer Online, recently
Dawn of War series

I play some form of video game everyday, and I have since I got my first NES.

So yeah, basically, I am your Nerd King. Bow before me.

Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man. There was a time I was too poor to get my broken washing machine repaired, so laundry was done once a week at the local laundromat. There was a Ms. Pac-Man game there, so I wasted lots of quarters on the game while my clothes were on spin cycle.

Posted by: rlr260 at April 8, 2009 5:17 PM

annoyingmouse, I bought Portal at Target for the boy because it was on sale and looked like something he might kind of like. He opened the box and spent the next week playing it. So, to answer your question, no, you're not alone in thinking it was the shit.

Posted by: hotpinklola at April 8, 2009 5:18 PM

SaBrina You might want to check out New Super Mario Bros. for the DS, it's done 2.5D style (Ala Donkey Kong World)

Iiinteresting. I had to look up what DS is, and I'm not sure if I want to start burning up my free time and money with video games, but if I decide to, I know where to go.

Posted by: SaBrina at April 8, 2009 5:27 PM

What, all this and no love for the Myst series? Some good times *eye twitches* working out those puzzles..

Posted by: lordhelmet at April 8, 2009 5:30 PM

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Yeah, it's recent, but it kicks ass. Plus, it's the only video game that I beat before my older brother did.

Runners Up
Mortal Kombat
Mutant League Hockey & Mutant League Football
Sonic the Hedgehog
Legends of Zelda (the old ass version on pea green Game Boy)

Does The Sims count? Because that shit kept me up for hours!

Posted by: Brie at April 8, 2009 5:31 PM

I used to love Sonic and Knuckles, but the part where you can plug Sonic 2 into the cartridge and play as Knuckles. It just seemed so cool to me. I tried to do other games with Knuckles, but none of the others worked.

Unfortunately, I was way into the Spyro the Dragon games for Playstation. Very lame little purple dragon runs around and collects gems and stuff. There's a level where frogs moon you.

Once I got way into Donkey Kong Country and spent my nights playing through the levels. It took me forever to finish the game, but I don't have mad gaming skills or anything. I can only do the Beginner level on Guitar Hero, two songs on Medium (I can't get used to the blue button). And I always used to get scared when playing games, horror games like my brother's Friday the 13th and killing games like Primal Rage and those James Bond shooters that we used to always play with my cousins.

Posted by: Cait at April 8, 2009 5:33 PM

CRAP how could I leave out:
Half Life 1-2
Quake 2
Resident Evil 4
Donkey Kong Country
Diablo 2
Starwars Knights of the Old Republic
Portal

and SaBrina, Capcom made Aladdin, many fond hours with that game.

Posted by: danny at April 8, 2009 5:33 PM

Holy shit, kids. I'm a sucker for Resident Evil games. I've played and beaten all of them on several different consoles. I am severely pissed that RE5 is only on XBOX360 and the PS3 since I only have a Wii and can't convince myself to spend the cash on the PS3.
I also loved Eternal Darkness. I've bought and sold it a couple of times. I was always disappointed that a sequel never materialized. I'm also sad that there hasn't been a next gen update of it.
I also get pulled into whatever game that I'm playing and will use every spare moment to play. I did that with Lego Batman and Lego Star Wars recently.
Did anyone else have the Sega channel growing up? (If someone already mentioned it, sorry! I didn't read all of the comments before mine.)

Soon when Work Hell ends (2 days...2 days...) I will be able to return back to the Wastelands and avenge my father's death in Fallout 3. My gods that is an immersive fucking experience. But all the constant trading of goods for caps is a bit irritating, I've gotta admit.

Favorites ever? I'm going with mainly new ones. Reason being as great as you may THINK some of the Atari and Nintendo era games were they just can't hold your attention now.

The List: The Legend Of Zelda, Lifeforce, Super Contra, Resident Evil 2, Super Mario Brothers, Kingdom Hearts, Devil May Cry, Dino Crisis 2, Silent Hill, Twisted Metal Black, Rock Band, Half Life 2, Portal.

Okami, anyone? That game is simply gorgeous. It made me a video game nerd for all time (I was a late bloomer...)

And I love kicking ass in Soul Caliber!

Posted by: Rollerson at April 8, 2009 5:38 PM

I was never really into video games. The only one I could play for more than 5 minutes without giving up was Desert Strike on Sega Genesis. I never got past the first level. And Frogger on Atari.

My cousin nearly killed me over a Zelda game. He was almost to the end, about to solve the whole thing when I walked by and tripped over the power cord, pulling it out of the wall. That's right, the whole game was lost. I don't think he's ever forgiven me and that must have happened 20 years ago.

DIABLO! That is all.

Posted by: black rhino at April 8, 2009 5:40 PM

cockroach i was always toad. bowser and wario were such brutes. i could never handle them.

i tried playing mariokart on wii recently and i was really disappointed in the graphics. plus there are different tracks. i like the old tracks, dagnabbit! rainbow road was like an acid trip. and there was the castle one... those damn blocks trying to crush you to death. plus, i always fell in the lava pit. and then there was that scary one with the ghosts.

and then...

oh man, i miss mariokart so hard.

I've played games for 25 years and I write about videogames for a living, so this is like choosing my favourite child.

I can shortlist about 50 games that have made me lose my shit, from Duck Hunt on the NES Link To The Past on the SNES, and Snatcher on the SEGACD, through Mario 64 (N64) and Ico on the on the PS2 to Half-Life 2, Bioshock and Fallout 3 on the 360. But for my favourite game of all time? I'd probably have to go with Portal as well.

Seriously, I defy anyone who has never played a videogame in their life (even those people who say 'fuck games' on general principle) to give it an hour of their time and not be completely enraptured. It's a beautiful, minimal sci-fi universe, wrapped in a puzzle, wrapped in an enigma, wrapped in Mike Patton playing part of the end boss.

It. Is. Entirely. Perfect.

Well, either that or Tiger Woods.

Posted by: Zuffle at April 8, 2009 5:40 PM

Fuck, I forgot a very important one:

Silent Hill

Wandering down a dark, misty alley and being suddenly surrounded by little grey babies with sharp teeth and knives?

Horrifying doesn't even BEGIN to describe it.

Posted by: annoyingmouse at April 8, 2009 5:41 PM

did anyone ever play perfect dark on n64?

that game kicked ass. plus, it made me feel british and all feministic and whatnot.

Posted by: stopthemadness at April 8, 2009 5:42 PM

Earthworm Jim is my favorite game of all time.

Bust-A-Move is hands down one of the funnest games ever. Tetris can suck a square cock.

Also Bio Shock & Resident Evil 5 both top notch stuff.

Posted by: Sad Rockstar at April 8, 2009 5:43 PM

Time to ostracized from the Pajiba community, but I play a shit-ton of World of Warcraft

Horde on Ysera-US - character name Marloro.

Posted by: Jim at April 8, 2009 5:45 PM

Diablo II was the inspiration for the book I am (still) writing. My badass archer turned into the main character of my story.

We also spent months of our lives kicking each other's ass sideways in "Tekken 2". To this day there is nothing I enjoy more than to play any version of Tekken against some unspecting boy and kick him in the kidneys with Ho-rag (oh wait, I mean Hoawang, or whatever the korean taikwando guy's name is) and then in the head, over and over and OVER again...sigh...

Posted by: maylai at April 8, 2009 5:47 PM

I didn't realize computer games could count for this, but then I have to add Rollercoaster Tycoon. Fuck The Sims, I wanted to make the most unrealistic, dangerous rollercoasters possible in between moving miniature men around to sweep up the inevitable vomit piles that clogged up the pathways after people rode those coasters. Jacking up umbrella prices whenever it rained was fun, too.

Posted by: SaBrina at April 8, 2009 5:47 PM

Pissboy i believe there was a game that included the select in the code. the game is escaping me, however.

For sheer playing time:

- Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
- Donkey Kong Country 1-3 (SNES)
- Goldeneye (N64)
- Metal Gear Solid; Resident Evil 3: Nemesis; FFVII; MediEvil (PS1)
- Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater; NHL 2003 (PS2)
- Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3)

Atari: Pac Man

Commodore 64: Frogger

NES: Duck Hunt, Mario 1-3, Startropics, Adventure Island Series, Tetris, Castlevania, Bucky O'Hare.

My PC: Doom II, Solitaire, Mahjong...

Posted by: :) at April 8, 2009 5:59 PM

I'm a mostly a PC gamer and love many of the previously mentioned (e.g. Starcraft series, HalfLife series, Fallout series, DOOM and the many 1st person shooters that followed), but the game I remember most fondly is Tecmo Bowl from Nintendo. When I was in college (1989 - I'm old), the guys in my dorm used to get together, put $10/person and then have a random drawing to see which team we would get. We'd then have the equivalent of a March madness tournament w/all the teams and would split out the winnings 70/20/10. Playing Ronnie Lott or Lawrence Taylor on Def and Bo Jackson or Walter Payton on Off was a blast even w/8 bit graphics. The winner was usually gracious enough to spring for beer and pizza afterward as long as you were willing to their smacktalk for the remainder of the evening. Good times.

Posted by: SoupSandwich at April 8, 2009 6:09 PM

Pissboy and roodle, I'm pretty sure the Contra/Konami code only used SELECT when you wanted 2 players. Now I'll have to dust off the ol' NES to check.....and here I was, all set to go out and talk to girls tonight.

Mega Man II (NES), Super Metroid (SNES), Final Fantasy VII (PS), Psychonauts (XBOX), Bioshock (360), Fallout 3 (360). Also, all of the Zelda games.

Posted by: dave at April 8, 2009 6:14 PM

Hm. I'm one of those girlie-non-gamer people, really. Mostly, I like quiet puzzle-y games. I'm TERRIBLE at driving games and shooters. But, I do have some games that I've loved over the years.

When I was around 13 or so (that'd be 1984), my brother and dad went to a soccer game, so I had the Atari 2600 to myself for 8 uninterrupted hours (the game was far away and they went out ot eat too). That was the night I hit 1 million points on Defender. I was quite proud of myself, let me tell you.

I loved Duck Hunt on the original NES.

I loved Myst on 3DO, and the one after that on Playstation, even though I never finished that one.

I love Tetris in all its forms (and on all its platforms).

For Christmas, I got the DS and the Legend of Zelda/Phantom Hourglass, which was fun (until I started classes again; I haven't touched it in like 8 weeks).

Over the weekend, I played Flower on my friends PS3 Live thingie. I really liked it; it's very quiet and pretty and non-violent or difficult. I was making them dizzy with the crazy steering of the petals, though. As i said, I'm not so good at the driving games...

My friend's bf thinks she and I should play Fable together, but I think she'd probably kick my ass soundly. Oh, he played some thing on the PS3 or Xbox that had amazing art and these robo-creature-things with like little kid voices that were terrifying. I forget what they kept saying, but it was super creepy. Damn, I can't remember the name of the game either.

The pseudo-hubster's been playing GTA IV pretty much non-stop since I gave it to him for Christmas. Except for eh week he took a break to play some thing with giant alien ants that were falling out of spaceships and he had to kill them. It might have been called Earth Defense Force. That was pretty cool.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at April 8, 2009 6:16 PM

Oh, and I always loved the first Super Mario Brothers on the NES.

Oh, OH! And we have the Virtual Boy somewhere in my house! We only ever had one game for it, I think, a Wario one. THat thing sucked out my life, and my eyeballs, for probably a solid month.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at April 8, 2009 6:18 PM

Three-way tie and all of them are sequels.

Thief II.
Master of Orion II.
System Shock II.

Posted by: The Judge at April 8, 2009 6:19 PM

Somebody beat me to it (damn this work that distracts me from Pajiba), but - yeah - the Konami code is wrong in title of your article. Was that a test to see who the true video game nerds are?

Posted by: DarthCorleone at April 8, 2009 6:22 PM

Goldeneye, by damn.

My freshman year of college my roommates and I were all dating girls in the same sorority, and were naturally obligated to go to their spring formal. It just so happened that this event was taking place on the same day as our dorm's Goldeneye tournament. We realized we could go to both events, but wouldn't have time to change after the tournament, so we did the only thing possible - we wore our tuxes to the Goldeneye tournament.

We crushed the field, and swept 1st through 4th places (I was fourth).

Posted by: jiggity at April 8, 2009 6:23 PM

Anyway, my all-time favorites:

Yar's Revenge (kicking it old school Atari 2600)
the original Legend Of Zelda (NES)
every incarnation of Mario Kart (SNES, N64, Gamecube, GBA, DS)
Resident Evil 4 (best in the series BY FAR)
Lemmings (one of the most addictive, intriguing strategy games ever, highlighted by an awesome battle mode on the SNES version)
Castlevania 3 (so many great games in this series, but this is the one that I felt was most transcendent)
Bioshock (raved about this in the other thread today)
Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat 1/2 (many hours competing with friends at the arcade and at home back in the day)
Super C(ontra) - far superior to the original which - for the record - I could also beat without losing a man. I didn't need the dumb code.

I've played so many video games over the years that I'm sure I'm forgetting some that I loved and are just as worthy.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at April 8, 2009 6:29 PM

I know I'm late, but the Altered Beast is the single greatest game of all time. Just fucking awesome idea and awesome graphics.

Posted by: courtney 2 at April 8, 2009 6:29 PM

Goldeneye (N64)!

Best multi-player FPS ever! And really - it's "sequel" Perfect Dark on the N64 was just as good.

I don't understand why someone has not just remade these games on the new consoles. Keep the graphics and everything EXACTLY the same, and with the new processing speeds, you'll immediately solve all the framerate problems, which were the only flaw in those games.

Oh, and I'm really, really into Rock Band these days.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at April 8, 2009 6:33 PM

jiggity>> That's a great story. Bond, James Bond, indeed!

courtney 2>> That was a great game. I spent almost all night playing it once at an arcade all-night fest.

We, unfortunately, weren't allowed to have a games console when I was a whipper-snapper. I had to console (natch) myself with the "educational centre" that my sister and I found ourselves saddled with one lonely Christmas eve of yore.

Its name? Socrates.

Wikipedia's telling me that some of the games I've since repressed included such thrilling titles as: Fact 'N Fractions, State to State, and Memory Mania.

Tell me that doesn't send a shiver through your calloused, arthritic, semi-opposable gaming thumbs ... and I'll call you a punk.

Too much to mention:

WoW, Bioshock, I have no mouth and I must scream, KOTOR, COD4, Metal Gear Solid 3 and 4, Wing Commander, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect.

And and of my favorite game memories:

Thanks to this thread, I can temporarily forget your previous blasphemy and number of toes. It's about time we started talking about games in this motherfucker.

Various games appeal to me, and though it's not my favorite, I do wish people would pay more attention to games made by Tim Schafer. And I also would like to acknowledge Shadow of the Colossus. If you haven't played it, you're genuinely missing out.

I want anyone who reads this to buy Shadow of the Colossus for the PS2. It's a truly remarkable game. Also, Pajiba should review games when it gets bigger. That way we can complain together about the sales of Tim Scafer games. I would have been here earlier if it wasn't for the fucking competetency exam.

Posted by: George at April 8, 2009 7:43 PM

I didn't get into eps 0-3, but Resident Evil 4 is my all time favourite horror anything- books, film, etc. Beautifully designed, great cinematics (eg. El Gigante's intro) and perfectly balanced combat right down to the ammo limitations that forced you to think carefully about how to tackle each fight. Run and gun fans might disagree, but the 3rd person stand-and-shoot approach is a brilliant tension building device, especially in the crowd scenes. The first visit to the village is still one of the great pitched battles in any game.

Others:
Have to give some love to Doom, even though the basic conecpt was pretty run into the ground until Goldeneye (another landmark) came along and introduced genuine mission elements beyond "get from A to B".
Other N64- Ocarina, MarioKart (great party game on any platform) and a shout out to Conkers Bad Fur Day which was way more fun than it had any right to be. Juvenile in a lot of ways (the Poo platform made me grateful for the limited graphic quality of the time), but also a sly parody of Nintendo's "family console" conventions.
Half Life 1 and 2 raised the FPS horror bar, I still swear those headcrabs crawl around my house at night. Always pays to keep a crowbar handy.
The God of War games on PS2 were guilty pleasures, there's just something about a badass main character crushing, killing and destroying every major god in Greek mythology that tickled the reptile corner of my brain.
I don't play as much these days, but am loving Bioshock plenty. The most entertaining critique of Ayn Rand I have come across, or it least the one with the most guns.

Posted by: Dave Shepherd at April 8, 2009 7:43 PM

As a kid I didn't have Nintendo or anything cool like that (the low end of middle class, yo) and the effects of that are far reaching indeed--I still suck ass at Mario.
However, in 1992 or so, we got our first home computer. And it came with Loom and The Secret of Monkey Island. I thought they were fucking great, and still kind of do. Even though, in 1993 my father, filled with the religious fervor of the newly saved, BURNED my copy of Loom in the backyard because "it is evil and uses witchcraft in the game." Uh . . . huh.
And then somewhere around 1996 I got all obsessed with Duke Nukem 3D because, seriously, he rips off an alien's head and shits down his neck. Also, he sounds like Ash from Evil Dead. Awesome.
And then when I worked as a nanny in 1997 that family had a Sega system and I played the stuff they had for their kids like Ristar, Aladdin, and the Lion King.
So it's mostly computer platforms for me because I still suck with the various controllers for game systems.
My girlfriend bought a used PS2 a couple years ago and it's pretty much been gathering dust. I don't know what she was thinking. If I feel the need to play a game these days, I go see what weird shit is up on Adult Swim. Zombie Hooker Nightmare is wicked.

Of course you can't have this list without the Metal Gear Solid series. They just got better and better, and they will always have a solid place in my heart!

One of my nephews got a Wii this Christmas, and I took a few swings at the baseball game, which was pretty cool. Before that I'd have to go back to plugging quarters into the standup machines at the mall arcade.

Yeah, I'm that fuckin' old, what of it?

Posted by: , (the commenter formerly known as bucdaddy) at April 8, 2009 8:11 PM

It's all about Kingdom of Loathing. The only kind of computer game I can stand.

KoL limits you to 40 turns a day, roughly, which is a big selling point for someone who doesn't have the time to get unexpectedly caught up in a game.

I can't believe there's no Pajiba clan on KoL, actually. It seems right up our alley.

Aw, man, I'm surprised there hasn't been more love for Final Fantasy VII-- I totally agree with the above comments that FF8 was a steaming PILE, but time has done nothing to soften my intense love for that game. The atmosphere! The music! The genuinely endearing characters! Yes, I bawled my eyes out when Aeris died-- I was 12. Epic.

Ugh, if you have even the slightest obsessive/compulsive inclination, stay the hell away from Final Fantasy Tactics. It seemed boring and incomprehensible at first, but... oh my GOD I have no clue how many hours of my life have been sapped into those tiny pixels.

And I'm seeing no love for Grand Theft Auto? Seriously, those games are genius, I don't care what you say about childhood violence yadda yadda yadda. Censoring that shit is like telling a man he can't have steak because a baby can't chew it. First truly open-ended gameplay in a highly, highly explorable world AND in Vice City you get to blast dope 80's jams on the radio. The nostalgia kills!!

Mmmm... I'm suddenly remember an occasion when my BF and I, around the age of 13 or 14, attempted to complete FF7 in one sitting. We traded the remote back-and-forth, and named all the characters stupid things, and kept a JOURNAL updating it at regular intervals as we descended into sleep deprived insanity. It was a really entertaining sociological experiment.

Which was, unfortunately, briefly derailed by a power outage. Beyond our control! But we quickly picked that shit up the following day and killed it around the 12 hour mark. Man.

Posted by: Tati at April 8, 2009 8:24 PM

OK...new thread within the video game topic...who else had a sibling or parent who just couldn't play video games, no matter how hard they tried...to the point where they would move the controller paddle in the direction they were moving, jumpting, or turning in an effort to make their character move faster or more efficiently?

Well yeah...we all know someone like that...but my mom did it with Tetris. I know kids who smell like the inside of a sneaker and like to write with their own shit who could beat my mom atr tetris.

Spyro. I own that shit. It stole thousands of hours of my childhood, and I don't regret even one of them. Even though I know the movie is going to suck balls, I'm more excited about it than an eleven-year-old boy who just found his dad's lesbian porn stash.

Posted by: Jaci at April 8, 2009 8:41 PM

oh man, memories. I wasn't allowed to have a console until I could pay for it myself, so until I bought a ps2 in 11th grade, I was stuck sharing with my friends.

My best friend had an N64 with Orcarina of time and that game is so motherfucking awesome it defies description. Except I hate the Jabu Jabu's belly level. EW.

When I finally got my ps2, it was for the sole purpose of playing all the Final Fantasy games I could get my hands on. I was first exposed to FFVIII, and I have fond memories of it, but my favourite remains FFIX. It's such an endearing story. I still haven't finished FFXII though. I like We Love Katamari (Katamari Damacy was never released in Australia, boo), and ADORE Okami, which has to be one of the most gorgeous games in existence.

I have a DS, but hardly any games for it - I mostly use it with a Japanese/English dictionary. :/

Posted by: icegemini at April 8, 2009 8:54 PM

Tempest 2000 on the Atari Jaguar. I'm the only person I know who actually owned that console, and as such one of the few people to fully appreciate the stripped-down, old-school arcade perfection of that game. I was shit-hot at it too, but could never get past level 64. That level was one of several levels in various games that could make me bite through my control pad in frustration at its sheer impossibility. See also: mission 8 phase 1 of Cannon Fodder on the same console, level 4 of R-Type II on the Atari ST, and most of the original Defender.

Aside from many listed already, I will always hold a special place in my heart for Ikaruga (originally for Dreamcast but I played the GameCube remake.) So many hours were sacrificed to beat that freaking game, but somehow I could never be frustrated at the perpetual failure (which still remains today, actually - mostly because I don't own a GC...) Nonetheless, it still remains one of the most beautiful and elegant shoot 'em ups that I've ever encountered. Awesome music, awesome graphics, artwork, and absolutely impossible to beat. Plus, we could spend hours debating the racial undertones of how you had to be opposite colours in order to inflict harm....

My drug dealer was Bioware/Black Isle, and my fixes were Planescape: Torment and Baldur's Gate 2. Played each of them four times, and I loved every minute. I lost a couple of years of my 20s to those damn games.

Posted by: brownribbon at April 8, 2009 9:31 PM

Oof, too many to mention, as I don't actually *have* an absolute favorite. Along with snobby films, video games (perhaps also a bit on the snobby side) are kind of my raison d'etre. Well...let's see...there's the Thief series, which is one of the most original and intelligent game series ever made. Not to mention the intricate visual style, ingeniously made ambient music, dark tone and moral ambiguity. Man, those are some damn fine games.

The Myst series is a close follow up, though the third and fourth games are my absolute favorites of that series. The original and Riven are fine, the fifth is just disappointing. Pretty, but just too...lonely, you know?

Then again, I'm also crazy about this really obscure SNES RPG called Terranigma, which is also kind of "lonely," but in a better, more sublime sort of way. It was never released here and I had to import it from Europe. Worth every penny, though. You play as this guy named Ark who lives in the underworld of Earth, but after starting a disaster in his village, he has to recreate life on the surface. It's slightly anime-like and it plays around with history, but it's just extremely interesting and has this strong sense/atmosphere of alienation. It's a real shame it never got released here.

As for more mainstream games, I'm also one for Diablo II and its expansion. Not only is it bloody fun and infinitely replayable, but I can't help but be intrigued by its portrayals of Hell and stuff like that. Plus, who doesn't like demon-slaying?

And there's many more: Chrono Trigger, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Super Mario World (its sequel with Yoshi in the lead is also really good), Final Fantasy X [sidenote to other FF nerds: used to like VI but that shit is old; VII is fine but not my favorite; I only find the first half of VIII to be worth playing and, uh...I have yet to really get into IX. Not interesting in XI and XII is...odd. Not sure I like it.] and Dragon Quest VIII, despite it's embarrassingly geeky title, is a work of genius.

Right, that's enough.

Posted by: vic at April 8, 2009 9:38 PM

ooh! yay. i've played quite a few games listed, but my favorite due to the sheer childlike joy i experience while playing it is katamari damacy. i just got the second one and it's just as fun, i'm addicted to rolling! and for added measure i have the soundtrack on my mp3 player.

my favorite when i was wee and the first video game i ever played was ff7, and it's still pretty high in the ranking now. i had lots of fun kicking chickens in fable and running over pedestrians in stolen cars in gta as well.

oh and silent hill was terrifying. those damn pterodactyls! i could only play while there were other people with me but it was hard to find anyone that wouldn't be too scared to watch. i remember playing mortal kombat and super mario 64 obsessively. i just had to get all the stars and find yoshi.

games that get better if played while drunk with lots of people:
mario kart, super mario galaxy (what? no one else loves this game?), mario party.

my brother and i have very different tastes in video games but we both love ape escape for some reason, it's not even really a good game. it's just fun sacking monkeys.

i feel like i'm leaving so many great games out... it really is like picking a kitten out of a litter.

Posted by: yeratomato at April 8, 2009 9:57 PM

oh! i forgot dragon quest 8! that game was so cute and dirty. or maybe i just have a perverted mind...

Posted by: yeratomato at April 8, 2009 9:59 PM

Aw crap, now that I've actually read the rest of the comments, I've forgotten about the Donkey Kong Country series. Man, I used to hope I'd get sick during elementary school so I could stay home and spend some more time playing that junk. It's so ridiculously simple and childish, but it's just so goddamn fun! I actually replayed the three of 'em recently. I seriously burned how I played that game into my brain, so it was like I was on autopilot.

I also forgot to mention Skies of Arcadia in my last post. No oceans, no terra firma, just exploring a vast sky with a few floating islands (some inhabited, some not) here and there. It's why video games were made. Shame that the enemy encounter rate was diabolically high.

Also: Descent3 and Age of Mythology, which is basically Age of Empires II in 3D and on acid. Forget Joan of Arc marching on Orleans, gimme Hercules and some Greek soldiers fighting a horde of minotaur.

I need to get laid.

HA! aww gee I totally remember that dude. Completely random. And I fucking LOVED Sonic, Aladdin, Carmen Sandiego, The Lion King, and Mortal Kombat. I wore those games out on my Sega. Remember when the games would freeze and you'd have to take out the cartridge, blow on it just right, and pray your Sega-fu was strong enough to make it work? I gotta say though, all that blowing really prepared me for a future full of, um, wind instruments.

There's so many I'll probably forget some, but:

NES: Mario 3, Metroid, Mega Man 2, Zelda, Zelda 2, Contra, Punch Out, Pro Wrestling

SNES: Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Zelda-Link to the Past, NHL Hockey 94

N64: GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Zelda-Ocarina of Time

Gamecube: Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime, Resi4, Pikmin 1 and 2, Prince of Persia 1

XBOX: Ninja Gaiden, GTA Vice City and San Andreas, Star Wars-Knights of the Old Republic, Black

XBOX 360: Bioshock, GTA IV, Half Life 2, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Mass Effect

Favorite game ever is Ocarina of Time. A revolution in game design w/ a wide open world never before seen on a console. It's the shit.

I spent hours upon hours with The Sims and Rollercoaster Tycoon.
I never played it (too young) but watching my brother play Resident Evil 2 screwed my 7-year-old mind up so much, it must have been decent to play.

who could beat my mom atr tetris

My mom co-opted my GameBoy for Tetris and then would monopolize the TV playing Dr. Mario. I was late getting the tape running on The Cure Unplugged because she wouldn't give it up! Didn't get to tune in until the end of the first song.

Ah, whatever the game is, I can be sure that if I start playing it, at some point I will play it Way Too Much. Even if it's *Minesweeper*.

Past addictions? Zork, King's Quest, Tetris, Diablo, some MUDD, and several others that wasted so much time but whose names I can't even remember. A few years ago . . . a particular Neverwinter Nights mod called Bonds of Blood which became an all-consuming time and brain suck.

These days I stick with Zuma, because I know I can stop when I need to.

i love metal gear solid i haven't played the fourth one yet because PS3s are too expensive right now. i also like megaman, metroid ,halo and mario and tomb raider. i think megman samus master chief and a team of characther from their respective series should form up, steal a prototype gunship belonging to the arbiter and go on a galactic adventure.

My #1 game ever was Tie Fighter "collector's" version. It included the original game plus 2 extras. I went through 3 Logitech joysticks playing that one. Loved destroying all these rebels and restoring the order of the Empire. I loved how there was a undercurrent of espionage and treachery underneath the missions. Sometimes you'd have to spy on your commanding officers, it was great!

I loved how we also got a lot of Grand Admiral Thrawn, to me, one of the most compelling Star Wars Universe villain ever. Since then, I've always smirked at the Star Wars movies thinking "Meh, X-wing, I used to blow 20 of those away in one mission with my Missile Boat!" :)

Other favorites include all Sonic Games until Sonic and Knuckles, the first 2 Gran Turismos and Einhander on the PSOne, Warcraft II and III, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, and lately Dawn of War and Company of Heroes.

Also, Altered Beast: anyone? Werewolf? Come on! :)

That said, none of those ever compare to that first love. :)

I'll be 39 years old this year. I remember walking into a restaurant in Italy and seeing that they had removed the pinball machine and replaced it with Space Invaders. That shit used up so many 100-lire pieces during my childhood...

I took a break from video games, but never gave them up. Now I have an xbox 360 and love it to death, and am waiting for a price drop. I play a lot of different games and have a lot of favorites, many of which are mentioned here, but so far the game that I play constantly is a game called Battlestations: Midway.

It's sort of a cross between a Real-Time-Strategy game and an action/arcade game. I am not into RTS games but I fucking love it. You get to control a battlefield composed of WWII battleships, destroyers, cruisers, submarines, all these different kinds of aircraft.

The learning curve is steep, but the payoff is immense and it is THE best experience on Xbox Live for me. Four vs. four multiplayer matches where you absolutely have to communicate. Plus the learning curve keeps the 12 year old Halo tards away.

The sequel is coming out this May, and it looks awesome. Half the campaign is from the Japanese point of view, and you get to win the war against America, which is a welcome change from most war games, and definitely a welcome change after the jingoistic mind-set of the past eight years.

Like I said, I've been around. I love movies, but they are starting to stagnate. Some hack director in an interview once said something I thought was really profound. He said that Hollywood doesn't want to make movies that will succeed, they want to make movies that won't fail.

This is the reason why you have these Michael Bay gold-spray-painted dog turds witht the budget of a small african country's gross national product, and this is why you also find me at home playing games rather than dropping a ten-spot at the local cineplex.

Games are no longer a form of mindless distraction or cheap entertainment, but are fast becoming a legitimate art form. One, that like movies, but on a far more global level, provides a shared emotional reaction and response amongst the population that are exposed to them.

I love Pajiba, and have always wondered why you haven't written reviews on games. God knows it's not because this site feels above them. I'm quite pleased to see this tentative step in what I believe is the right direction on your part. Should you decide to start reviewing games on this site I wish you to know you have my full support, and yet one more among many reasons why I keep reccommending it to friends and family and complete fucking strangers I meet on the street

Oh, and I forgot my favorite RPG of all time: Planescape - Torment.

Compelling Universe, incredible story, incredible character development, powers that rivaled a God by the end of the game: that game had it all.

It was an incredible gaming experience. Like Dungeons and Dragons meets the diversity of the Star Wars Universe: it was insane!

That is all.

Posted by: jpguy13 at April 9, 2009 12:08 AM

TheUpsetter: I agree - heck, I'd be the first to admit - that video games boast some incredible aesthetic and narrative features, but to have, say, a section devoted to 'em here on Pajiba? Hm. While this place is getting cozy with other mediums like books and music, the reason why this succeeds is because the reviewers are both extremely literate and, like everyone else on this planet, music lovers. Additionally, so are a vast majority of us Eloquents.

However, video games are an entirely different beast altogether compared to other forms. I've heard this said about comic books and I think it applies to video games as well: they haven't had their cahiers du cinema yet. Sure, they're becoming increasingly more sophisticated on some levels, they've not yet broken through as an artform yet. It's hard to try and make them more interesting and intellectual when the goal in making them has been to A) entertain and B) make money, a 'problem' (depending on who you talk to, of course) that's consuming films right now as well.

There does seem to be hope, though. I visit gamespot.com every now and then and they have a feature called "soapbox" where users can write just about anything concerning video games. I've seen some extremely intelligent articles dealing with everything from genre definition to the subject of video games as art. Furthermore, there's places like Penny Arcade, which, love 'em or hate 'em, are led by two pretty damn intelligent people.

Nevertheless, I would like to see more places similar to Pajiba with brainy, literate people reviewing and criticizing and being bitchily scathing about video games. But I still can't see Dustin and co. starting another section about it. I'm more than fine having this place being primarily about films. Maybe if some Eloquents start up a separate blog with Pajiba's blessing, sure, but I don't see a place for 'em here.

Yeah, PissBoy, those shirts are the devil and I'd be happy to see them all burn.

Now, there's a pressing issue that needs addressing. If you look at the list, you'll notice a lack of Mega Man. Only five out of eight hundred million commenters even mentioned the series, and only two of us gave it the top spot. What is the world coming to? Mega Man should be on everybody's lists, blowing away the competition with his mega buster.

HE HAS A FUCKING CANNON ON HIS MOTHERFUCKING ARM. If I had an arm cannon, I'd bring slavery back just so I could abolish it.

Anna Von Beaverplatz: You get a special prize for mentioning Earth Defense Force. It's the greatest, most awesome game called Earth Defense Force of all time. You get unlimited rockets. UNLIMITED ROCKETS, PEOPLE.

Atari XE: Ballblazer, from Lucasarts (ping!).

Master System: Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, where Wonder Boy gets cursed by the MECHA Dragon and transforms into different sorts of animals. One of the few 8-bitters with a save mode (Thank God fr that).

Mega Drive (aka Genesis): Sonic 1 & 2, and Spinball (didn't care for 3); Earthworm Jim obviously; Mortal Kombat 2. Soft spot for Kid Chameleon (kid collects helmets and transforms into a samurai, a rhinoceros, Jason, a fly, ...)

PS2: Shadow of The Colossus, GTA III and GTA San Andreas. Vice City had too much pink & green.

PC: Leisure Suit Larry 2 and Quake.

Wii: Wii Fit.

More things I would do if I had an arm cannon:

Get a job starting races.

Lose weight (arm cannons burn calories).

Figure out a way to cook with it.

Put fish in a barrel so that I may shoot them.

Single handedly, or better yet, "Single cannonedly," bring democracy to Canada.

Become King of Canada in their first democratic election (in which I run unopposed to ascend to the throne for life). Don't need no scepter when you gots an arm cannon.

Rename Quebec to Franada.

Conquer Portugal, leading the Canadian military with my unstoppability.

Invent money, thereby solving the financial crisis.

In summary: I deserve an arm cannon. Somebody get on that.

Side note: Confession time
Stupid things I did for video games:

- Stole money from my parents
- Played on at a friend's house while he and his family were having dinner in the next room, which is like breaking an 11th commandment over there.
- Switched off all the electricity at home while my brother was playing because I couldn't bear the thought him getting farther ahead in the game than me.
- Dropped my dog-walking chores for my aunt to continue playing Time Bandit on a Tandy. Forgive me, Milou.

I've read through all of them. All of them, and I haven't played a video game in ages. I just wanted to see whether anyone would mention my game. Not one of you motherfuckers did so. I'm putting it down to (for reasons which I don't understand) the PC as a game platform being mostly ignored. Being so comfortable, robust, adaptable to different games and being something which everyone, being a gamer or not, owns anyway, I don't know why the pc isn't given much more love.

The game I used to like the most when I was about 13 was Commandos. Commandos, Commandos 1.5 and Commandos 2. It ruled. Great strategy game based on World War 2. I spent many hours trying to finish those missions. Seriously, there's no better console for strategy games than the PC. I've never owned another game console. Why buy one when a computer can do anything and everything? Nowadays consoles are trendy and different for example the Wii and PsP which makes it understandable on why the game companies do not look on the pc as something to invest much money into anymore but until a while ago it always seemed to me like the PC was king. It's surprising it isn't given any more love.

I used to play more games when I was young like Mortal Combat, Tomb Raider and others. Then I stopped playing games until two years ago. The most recent game I played was GTA: Vice City which I loved because it was such a big world to explore with a good story line. That reminded me that video games are fun and this thread has given me the urge to find some good computer game to play to see whteher I can refind the love I had for games when I was 13-14. I'll see whether some of the interesting games mentioned here exist for PC. If they don't I know a Guitar Hero for PC exists and there are magazines and websittes dedicated to PC games so all is not lost.

Those who have given up on the PC as a game platform should think again. Games are still developed for it and it's the cheapest way to have a game platform because you own or are about to buy a computer anyway. The PC as a game platform is really a no-brainer... Ok, now I'll stop ranting on the greatness of the PC now.

P.S My mate used to play Final Fantasy on the playstation and it was the most boring thing I had ever seen. Never tried hard to understand it to be honest. It looked like too much hard work.

Tekken was awesome though. I loved the Doctor who couldn't stand straight and was always falling to the ground.

9 years old at school I used to LOVE playing the game with the bouncing ball and the paddle where you had to break the wall above brick by brick to get to the next level. And there was that game where you were a detective or something and had to travel around the world to solve mysteries. I think someone mentioned it in the posts above and I had not thought about that game since I left primary school. Thanks for the momories. (Both names of these two games escape me and too lazy to track them down)

Posted by: barf at April 9, 2009 10:44 AM

um...Marble Madness...?

Posted by: arr matey at April 9, 2009 11:03 AM

Barf, the PC is by no means ignored as a game platform. Hell, most of the games I play now are on PC (but many of them are through console emulators). If you look at the list, you'll see a ton of PC games.

Elfrieda, I'm with you on TLJ, but Dreamfall and Siberia sucked. Siberia didn't have enough detail (she gave the same bland comment on every unusable object in the game) and Dreamfall's story was a huge disappointment following the impressive, immersing TLJ. Some games you left off the adventure list:

Grim Fandango
Full Throttle
Monkey Island 1-3

Holy crap, I just realized that no one mentioned Grim Fandango. Shame on you all. Anyway, Elfrieda, you haven't played an adventure game until you've played Grim Fandango. And you should consider playing Planescape: Torment, which is very adventure-esque.

Wednesday, I am 127% behind you on Kingdom of Loathing. That's the only game I was ever able to stick with for more than a day or two.

Well, except for Torin's Passage, but I think that's because that was the very first game played on the family's very first computer and it had the novelty aspect going for it. I finished that one--boo-yah!

Can we get this on a t-shirt? Because this, right here, is my new motto for life.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at April 9, 2009 1:05 PM

Wow, did I ever come late to the party.

Growing up I used to play Sonic 1&2 at my neighbours house all the fucking time. That game was the tits. At home we didn't get another console after we broke the Nintendo until the PS but I used to play Myst on the computer and this other puzzle game that I can't remember what it was called but I was in The Artist Formerly Known as Prince's house. It was fucked up and incredibly addicting.

After we got our first house hold console I got really into this game called Tomba. It was this little dude with pink hair running around beating up pigs and collecting moths and eating mushrooms. Best game ever.

Now I stick to first person shooters mostly. Some current favorites Bioshock, Gear of War 1&2, Halo series and Left 4 Dead. I'm hesitant to try Residental Evil 5 but I really wanna play it, I'm just the biggest chicken shit. I can only play scary games during day time hours and even then I get creeped out.

Snath: Let's go play tetherball.

Posted by: Lucas at April 9, 2009 6:17 PM

I'm super far late, but I want to play. Damn real life! Damn it all to hell.

So:

I got married to my real-life boyfriend and father of my children in Asheron's Call (the first one). We played many multiplayers together...in fact, now that I'm doing all the mommy work and he's still gaming all the time without me, I see where our relationship troubles come from!

I also keep going back to kill Final Fantasy Tactics once a year, I can't stay away from the SimCity and I'll always be fond of FF Anything, Shenmue, LocoRoco, Peggle, that Dead or Alive Vollyball mashup one, and even Snood (with the kids).

I know. I'm such a girl, but I kick ass at GoldenEye (I squee a bit when cornered, but I'm ruthless) nonetheless. I guess your basic point-shoot-jump-crow type of game doesn't do anything for me, and the rote/repeat nature of stuff like Lara Croft gets me bored pretty quick too. I like to fool around in games and the ones that allow for some exploration/variation always pull me back in.

Silent Hill 2 is definitely up there. The fact that you don't fight a single enemy in Silent Hill 2 for about 40 minutes, yet those 40 minutes are the scariest, most engaging part of any movie or game I've ever seen in my life says a lot for a guy who's flat-out bored by horror movies. It was very original in a horror premise because of how the game characterizes its cast. Instead of just murderous monsters patrolling around town, it was the town itself that would bring on physical manifestations of psychological troubles of the character (faceless sexualized monster nurses appealing to the character's sexual frustrations, etc.). It was a neat way of developing characters, and creating an atmosphere of helplessness versus an enemy that you can't see or feel.

Posted by: Greg at April 10, 2009 5:05 PM

I won't ever get tired of Super Puzzle Fighter II.

Posted by: kiyo-chan at April 10, 2009 7:39 PM

The Gabriel Knight series - though Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within will always to me be the best freaking video game out there! It beats most movies I have seen, for crying out loud. :) (And I love Dean Erickson as Gabriel - Tim Curry never did it for me. Sorry!)

The Longest Journey is epic. Just epic. (Dreamfall was good, but not as epic as TLJ.)

The Kyrandia series - nostalgia right there!

I never really got into the action-adventure genre - but right now I'm giving Zelda a try on the Wii.

Posted by: Merry at April 11, 2009 2:22 PM

I wasn't much into video games thanks to my overly obsessive brother. We played Street Fighter II, Final Fantasys II-IV (both on Nintendo, I believe) and Phantasy Star II (on Sega) together in the early 90s. He was way into winning and would often decry the computer for doing "cheap moves" to beat him. I liked all three well enough, but I couldn't play for an entire day after the age of 13 or so (I started to like boys around that age). So my obsession with video games is limited because I feel it's a device created by men to cause men to ignore their girlfriends (that and CSI)...
