The Best Albums of the Aughts?
An Afternoon Comment Diversion / TK

I can think of no more ridiculous task. I’ve been asked to do some goofy shit for this site (The Memory Keeper’s Daughter, anyone?), but this is the goofiest. It’s an impossible task. Too much time has passed. Nine years ago I was living with my best friend in a shit hole apartment in Allston, getting ready for the biggest change of my life (moving to Philly to be with the future Mrs. TK). I couldn’t balance my checkbook, I got high every. single. day. and I reviewed video games for a website that I don’t think even exists anymore and had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Thousands of albums have been released since 2000 — I don’t know why anyone would even contemplate such a task.
Oh wait, yes I do — because we’re suckers for lists and for music. So I spent an insane amount of time poring through my music, trying to figure out — what are the best albums of the Aughts? I’ve got some ideas, but I’d like to hear yours, readers. You know the drill: list your faves, and we’ll compile them and list the top ten for you, complete with retrospective reviews. Here’s an off-the-top-of-my-head list of just a few of mine (not in order, and not probably even my favorites):
DJ Shadow — The Private Press/Repress
The Postal Service — Give Up
Built to Spill — You In Reverse
The Drive-By Truckers — Decoration Day
Aceyalone and RJD2 — Magnificent City
From Autumn To Ashes — Holding A Wolf By The Ears
The Receiving End of Sirens — Between The Heart and the Synapse
Tool — Lateralus
Elliott Smith — Figure 8
Daft Punk — Discovery
Flaming Lips — Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Ryan Adams — Heartbreaker
Kanye West — College Dropout
I could go on and on. But now it’s your turn.
