The Best Albums of the Aughts?

An Afternoon Comment Diversion / TK

Comment Diversions | March 4, 2009 | Comments (131)

I can think of no more ridiculous task. I’ve been asked to do some goofy shit for this site (The Memory Keeper’s Daughter, anyone?), but this is the goofiest. It’s an impossible task. Too much time has passed. Nine years ago I was living with my best friend in a shit hole apartment in Allston, getting ready for the biggest change of my life (moving to Philly to be with the future Mrs. TK). I couldn’t balance my checkbook, I got high every. single. day. and I reviewed video games for a website that I don’t think even exists anymore and had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Thousands of albums have been released since 2000 — I don’t know why anyone would even contemplate such a task.

Oh wait, yes I do — because we’re suckers for lists and for music. So I spent an insane amount of time poring through my music, trying to figure out — what are the best albums of the Aughts? I’ve got some ideas, but I’d like to hear yours, readers. You know the drill: list your faves, and we’ll compile them and list the top ten for you, complete with retrospective reviews. Here’s an off-the-top-of-my-head list of just a few of mine (not in order, and not probably even my favorites):

DJ ShadowThe Private Press/Repress

The Postal ServiceGive Up

Built to SpillYou In Reverse

I really need to keep up with the good music scene. I can't think of a good album that came out because I didn't pay attention, but I can give you the worst.

I nominate Fall Out Boy, Nickelback, and The Jonas Brothers for shittiest fucking bands of the decade, with Fall Out Boy winning the worst band of all time award.

And the album that makes me want to open my wrists all over this keyboard most is... fucking Circus by Britney Spears, because she should have never had a career in the first place.

WHY THE FUCK DID PEOPLE BUY CIRCUS!? IT BLEW!

Posted by: George at March 4, 2009 3:15 PM

I guess these are a given, but Radiohead:

Kid A, Amnesiac, In Rainbows.

Posted by: Cindy at March 4, 2009 3:17 PM

"Tool -- Lateralus"

Hell, yes!

I also nominate The Blackening by Machine Head.

Metallica? Is that something to eat?

Posted by: FabMax at March 4, 2009 3:18 PM

Don't knock Circus, George. It's fantastic for cardio.

Posted by: claire at March 4, 2009 3:20 PM

Poring, not pouring.

Any of the Danger Mouse-produced stuff ranks high in my estimation.

Posted by: Recondite at March 4, 2009 3:21 PM

Mermaid Avenue: Billy Bragg and Wilco.

Posted by: PaddyDog at March 4, 2009 3:23 PM

In no particular order:

Outkast / Speakerboxx/The Love Below

Bright Eyes / I'm Wide Awake It's Morning

Spoon / Kill the Moonlight

Justice / Cross (Daft Who?)

Radiohead / In Rainbows (This one, besides being a great album, also holds the honor of probably being one of the most important and successful steps in marketing music in the internet age.)

Posted by: Macafee at March 4, 2009 3:25 PM

Best album of the aughts? Chinese Democracy. Hands down.

Not sure if these are my best albums of the decade, but these have definitely helped shape my life in some way:

The Argument by Fugazi

Stairs and Elevators by The Heartless Bastards

On The Outside by The Marked Men

Coral Fang by The Distillers

Songs for the Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age

Lack of Communication by The Von Bondies

Good times.

Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine
Rufus Wainwright - Want One and/or Want Two
Ben Folds Five - Whatever and Ever Amen
Jump Little Children - Vertigo

Posted by: mak at March 4, 2009 3:44 PM

Crap, just remembered BFF came out in the 90s. Replace it with Ben Folds' Rockin' the Suburbs, then.

Posted by: mak at March 4, 2009 3:47 PM

Ugh, as if I didn't already feel ancient today, these music columns always make me feel old and out of touch. Ah well, there are a few names I recognize here.

Although Macafee makes a good argument for In Rainbows, if I had to pick my favourite 21st century Radiohead album, it'd be Amnesiac. Thom Yorke's The Eraser goes on the list too. I'll also toss in Ron Sexsmith's Time Being and The B-52s' Funplex (shut up, it's fun as hell!).

Posted by: meaux at March 4, 2009 3:48 PM

I'll also toss in... ...The B-52s' Funplex (shut up, it's fun as hell!).

How could it not be with a name like that?! It's practically written on the packaging.

Mos Def - The New Danger

Our Lady Peace - Spiritual Machines

Grizzly Bear - Yellow House

Posted by: ChristianH at March 4, 2009 3:55 PM

DAMN. Everytime I see you post, PissBoy, it's like love rekindled all over again. I would trade out that White Stripes album for either of the Raconteurs albums, but that's is about it.

Ok, to be a little more opinionated:

Portishead Third

Clutch Pure Rock Fury

Wilco Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

Radiohead In Rainbows

Aesop Rock Float

Neko Case Fox Confessor

LCD Soundsystem Sound of Silver

Ryan Adams Heartbreaker (That twat.)

I Wrestled A Bear Once s/t (Of course it is self-titled, because that band name is fucking AWESOME.)

Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man Out of Season

Phew.

Posted by: boo at March 4, 2009 4:02 PM

Truth in advertising, PissBoy!

Posted by: meaux at March 4, 2009 4:02 PM

Sage Francis- Human the Death Dance
Coldplay- X&Y
AFI- Sing the Sorrow (okay, maybe I just listened to that one WAY too much in high school)
Muse- Black Holes and Revelations
System of a Down- Mesmerize
The Faint- Danse Macabre
Coheed and Cambria- Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness
Also, is Radiohead's Ok Computer from the aughts? If so, add that to the list.

Posted by: Quincy at March 4, 2009 4:02 PM

Jesus...I have no idea. I'm so very tired.

Funeral-Arcade Fire
Guero-Beck
American Idiot-Green Day
More Adventurous-Rilo Kiley
Hail to the Thief-Radiohead
Plans-Death Cab (listening to this album breaks my heart, every time)
Employment Kaiser Chiefs
Smile-Brian Wilson (not sure if this counts, since it was written forever ago but released in 04)

I'll let the cool kids handle the less commercial stuff, I am completely daunted by music. It scares me. Deliciously so.

Posted by: Julie at March 4, 2009 4:02 PM

TV on the Radio Dear Science and a hearty second for Wilco Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

Posted by: catag at March 4, 2009 4:05 PM

Ok, if PissBoy listed Smile then I am secure in my choice. Thank you Andy, my darling younger brother, for being so insanely ridiculously adorably obsessed with Brian Wilson. But please, stop making me watch documentaries about Ronnie James Dio.

Posted by: Julie at March 4, 2009 4:06 PM

I'm diggin' the indie love. I'd say The Libertines' "Up the Bracket" is right up there for me. Kings of Leon "Aha Shake Heartbreak" was already mentioned, and what about Tool's other Aught effort "10,000 days"?

Posted by: Isiaha Tripod at March 4, 2009 4:07 PM

Anyone say:

The National - Boxer
Josh Ritter - The Animal Years

good times...

Posted by: Nate at March 4, 2009 4:08 PM

Julie!!! Never take the Lord Dio's name in vain!

HAVE I TAUGHT YOU NOTHING????

Posted by: boo at March 4, 2009 4:10 PM

You all like music that I would not classify as 'suck ass.' It all might not be my cup of tea, but I would not file it under suck ass. Way to go, Pajibans, you don't suck.

RADIOHEAD: IN RAINBOWS
MY MORNING JACKET: IT STILL MOVES
THE DECEMBERISTS: PICARESQUE
FLEET FOXES: FLEET FOXES
GNARLS BARKLEY: THE ODD COUPLE
KINGS OF LEON: AHA SHAKE HEARTBREAK
INTERPOL: TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS
M.I.A: ARULAR
PANDA BEAR: PERSON PITCH
RYAN ADAMS: HEARTBREAKER (I second that motion)

and Pissboy, thanks for being the only other person I've encountered (internet or real life) that has heard of Handsome Boy Modeling School. I love that shit.

Posted by: Porkchop at March 4, 2009 4:10 PM

Amy Winehouse- Back to Black

Say what you will about her, but there's not a bad song on that album.

Posted by: Will at March 4, 2009 4:13 PM

LCD Soundsystem, Sound of Silver
Tool, Lateralus but I would have stumped for 10000 Days if the second half of the album was stronger
The National, Boxer
Queens of the Stone Age, Songs For The Deaf
Green Day, American Idiot. Don't judge it by what it became, very few bands have their finest hour 10 years into their career.
Los Campesinos, We are Beautiful, We Are Doomed. high energy indie agnst
The Fratellis, Costello Music. I may have heard it first on an Ipod commercial, but damn if that album isn't stacked from start to finish with instantly hummable earworms.
Muse, Absolution. Nearly went for Black Holes, but think this one has a slightly stronger collection of cosmic sized singalongs.
System of a Down, Toxicity. Reignited my dormant love of metal, superior to the 1.5 albums-with-4-utterly-shit-songs combo of Hypnotise/Mesmerize. Once upon a time it was punk howling in protest while "metal" preened itself, how times change.
Ween, La Cucaracha. Fun, musically diverse return to form and keeper of one of the creepiest songs ever written (Object)

Posted by: Dave Shepherd at March 4, 2009 4:13 PM

Ha ha ha!!! THERE'S ONLY SO MUCH I CAN TAKE BOO!!

Posted by: Julie at March 4, 2009 4:14 PM

And now for something completely different...

Tori Amos - Scarlet's Walk
AFI - Sing the Sorrow
Brand New - Deja Entendu
Thursday - War all the Time
Green Day - American Idiot
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium
Eminem - The Eminem Show
Alkaline Trio - Good Mourning
Avenged Sevenfold - City of Evil

Posted by: TylerDFC at March 4, 2009 4:14 PM

Because my list apparently isn't long enough, let's get a little more indie:

Fleet Foxes -- S/T

The Streets -- Original Pirate Material

Of Montreal -- Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?

The Decemberists -- Five Songs (Still the best Decemberists album)

TV on the Radio -- Return to Cookie Mountain (Don't get me wrong, Dear Science is brilliant, but this one will always be near and dear to my heart)

Posted by: Macafee at March 4, 2009 4:15 PM

TylerDFC, WORD to the Thursday love. Review of Common Existence is coming soon!

Posted by: TK at March 4, 2009 4:16 PM

True, Jules, very true.

It takes a strong human being to hold the Dio close the heart. Like listening to Alanis Morisette's "GOD" voice from Dogma kind of strong.

I don't fault you for your weakness, earthling. Only mourn for your loss.

DIO IS GOD!!!! CAUSE IT'S IN HIS NAME!!!

Posted by: boo at March 4, 2009 4:17 PM

Best lunch break ever Boo: sitting at The Khyber (a local bar), drinking IPAs and watching a MARATHON of Dio videos.

Posted by: Julie at March 4, 2009 4:19 PM

I am green. Kermit don't even KNOW my kind of green.

Posted by: boo at March 4, 2009 4:20 PM

Wait, TK: Are you saying that being high every day is a bad thing?

Because I'm high RIGHT NOW. TYPING. Woah, what a weird-looking word: TYPING.

T-Y-P-I-N-G.

I...I don't even know what that means anymore. Wait, how am I making words??

WOAH.

Posted by: boo at March 4, 2009 4:25 PM

Arcade Fire: Funeral is one of my favorites.

Cut Copy: In Ghost Colours makes me want to take off my pants and go full retard.

Posted by: stopthemadness at March 4, 2009 4:25 PM

Sufjan Stevens: all of his albums. period.
Broken Social Scene: You Forgot It In People
Death Cab for Cutie: Plans
Rilo Kiley: More Adventurous

Posted by: Eileen at March 4, 2009 4:30 PM

KANYE FUCKING WEST!? Ughhhhhh I groaned at that one so much I'm gonna take a dump after posting this...

Common -- Like Water for Chocolate (2000) -- This guy is amazing, and it's a shame he's more recognizable now as a supporting actor. If you like rap in the vein of guys like Kweli/Mos Def/The Roots this album is a great jump off point. I could go on and on if provoked...

Against Me! -- Reinventing Axl Rose (2002) -- Despite the occasionally obnoxious Anarchistic overtones, this album still kicks me in the teeth on many tracks.

Minus the Bear -- Highly Refined Pirates (2002) -- Personal pick, don't think they're that heavily liked. Bombed by critics, but I don't give a fuck.

The Jonas Bro -- I'm kidding I won't even wikipedia them to continue this joke.

Shout out to In Rainbows, even though I preferred Kid A, the impact of the way they released the album is only starting to be felt.

Posted by: Dan at March 4, 2009 4:31 PM

The Gaslight Anthem-Sink Or Swim
Their first album is as close to perfect as I've ever heard from anyone. Ever.

Posted by: Diablotien at March 4, 2009 4:32 PM

Dream Theater, Train of Thought
Mando Diao, Ode to Ochrasy
Coheed & Cambria, Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV Vol. 1: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness
Melee, Devils & Angels
Big Wreck, The Pleasure and the Greed
Head Automatica, Popaganda
The Format, Dog Problems
My Chemical Romance, The Black Parade
The Waking Eyes, Video Sound
The Spill Canvas, No Really, I'm Fine
Jimmie's Chicken Shack, Bring Your Own Stereo
Green Day, American Idiot

/carries the populist flag proudly
/expects not a one of these albums to make the list ('cept maybe American Idiot)

Posted by: Sean at March 4, 2009 4:36 PM

Dan, I believe the Jonas Brothers album you were looking for was "Packin'!", which has such chart topping hits as "Surprise Buttsecks (of Love)", "Poof (It's Magic, Bitches!)", "My Heart Rings of Purity", "Too Tight", "Taylor Swift Can Go Suck a D**k (and I'll Join Her as a Friend" and "Isn't It Obvious...". (Though, I hear if you buy it at WalMart, you get the exclusive 3D insert of Jo Bro nips. A little something for the menladies.)

Posted by: Mike R. at March 4, 2009 4:42 PM

I'll defend Kanye West til I die. The man is a colossal asshole, a douchebag of the highest order. But DAMN if College Dropout isn't a fucking incredible hip hop album. My guess is that a lot of people who hate him, hate him for his personality, and know little about his albums. If that's not true, then my apologies. But I maintain that that's a fantastic album.

Posted by: TK at March 4, 2009 4:44 PM

Alright, so Bring Your Own Stereo was '99. Scratch.

Posted by: Sean at March 4, 2009 4:47 PM

I will touchee that TK.

I will admit he does have a few songs that aren't half bad. I couldnt give two licks of a rat's ass about his personality, but I still don't think he's any good as an actual rapper. In fact I find when he shows up alongside other rappers doing his own verse, those usually end up bringing the song down.

Hope I'm not overpreaching by bringing up Common again, but Kanye produced and guest spotted on a song called "The Food". Great as a producer, good on the hook, but when he stepped in for a verse he just couldn't hold a candle.

And I think George Bush doesn't care about black people either.

Girl Talk - Night Ripper
NERD - Seeing Sounds

Most likely not the best overall, but worth noting.

Probably not the "best" but some of my favorites:

Rilo Kiley "The Execution of All Things"
The Elected "Sun, Sun, Sun"
Tilly and the Wall "Bottoms of Barrels"
Wilco "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot"
Tegan and Sara "The Con"
The Decemberists "Picaresque"
The Postal Service "Give Up"

And I have to give a special shout-out to "War of Women" by Joe Firstman. It's not my favorite of his work, and it's definitely not the best album of the aughts, but it has deep sentimental value and not including it just feels wrong.

Posted by: bucdaddy at March 4, 2009 8:18 PM

System of a Down- Mesmerize

Hypnotize and Mesmerize go together as a double album concept thing. The packaging even makes a double cd set.

My nominations:

System of a Down - Toxicity
Kanye West - College Dropout (TK, I'll back you up. The man is insufferable, but it is a bad ass album.)
Tool - Lateralus (Like someone said above, if 10000 days were stronger in the back half, I would have suggested it instead. 10000 days goes off the rails after "Wings for Marie" and never gets back on track completely)
A Perfect Circle - Mer de Noms
Death Cab - Plans
Postal Service - Give Up
My Chemical Romance - Black Parade (Shut Up all of you. It is quite the kick ass album.)
Ben Harper - Both Sides of the Gun
Tori Amos - Scarlet's Walk
Nine Inch Nails - The Slip (While I'd love to throw The Fragile in, it was released in late 1999. Damn.)
Garbage - Bleed Like Me
David Gray - White Ladder
Foo Fighters - In Your Honor
Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head (Far Superior to X&Y in my opinion.)
The Shins - Oh, Inverted World
Johnny Cash - American IV: The Man Comes Around (I'll make a case for this one over any other album I've nominated. If you have not heard anything from this album other than "Hurt", get to it now.)

Posted by: Melody at March 4, 2009 8:25 PM

Cee-Lo Green... is the soul machine.- Gnarls Barkely is amazing, but this album is pants-creamin' good

Monster, Killer Mike- An underwritten part of Outkast's whole crew. This album, while raw to its core, is just amazing. His most recent releases have sucked, but this album is an amazing display of "hardcore" rap as a genre.

Deliverance, Bubba Sparxxx- In the same vein as Killer Mike, his recent shit sucks, but deliverance is just a beautiful and impressive album.

The Ecleftic, Wyclef Jean-Everyone argues that the carnival is a superior album, but this album drew me into rap so I gotta toss it out there, if only for others to explore.

Quality (Kwelity to some), Talib Kweli- I'm admittedly biased, anything Talib and Mos Def produces I enjoy. In this case (and in the case of Black on Both Sides), I can honestly say it's my favorite production by Kweli.

Hear, hear!

I was thinking, damn, I have to go home and look through my collection for this. But then I realized that most of the music I listen to, if I listen to music at all anymore, is from the '90s, and I really don't have enough from the '00s to make a list.

So I'll just throw out a couple: One by a certain band I already mention way too often (see above), also Dropkick Murphys' "Do Or Die" and, if I can get dispensation for records of the past decade, I can include the Bottle Rockets' "Brand New Year" (Aug. 10, 1999).

I'd tell you all about Owen Davis and FOX Japan too, but you don't know who the hell they are.

Posted by: bucdaddy at March 4, 2009 11:25 PM

P.S. The Pink Hulk, alt-Country existed as early as Lucinda Williams in the late '80s, spread on with Uncle Tupelo and then Wilco. It was even preceeded by The Kinks' "Musswell Hillbillies" in the '70s. Just FYI.

My Morning Jacket - It Still Moves
Best live band out there right now, in my opinion.

Franz Ferdinand - Self Titled and "You Could Have It So Much Better"
I really hate that FF doesn't get much play any more; they are so jammy and awesome. I want to follow them around and watch their scottish adventures.
