Ten Music Memories

An Afternoon Comment Diversion / Dustin Rowles

Comment Diversions | May 22, 2007 | Comments (230)

Before we move on with today’s comment diversion, I just want to thank you all for participating in last week’s diversion devoted to your favorite novels. A Guide will come out of that in the weeks to come — and it’s one I’m pretty stoked about. In the meantime, hopefully we’ll manage to post another book review entry in the not-too-distant future.

For today’s comment diversion, I want to return to music again. But, instead of favorites, let’s get a little nostalgic (it should help keep us at or around the 43 level, Jerce/Gigi). You know how you will hear a song today and it will put you back in a particular time and particular place in your past? Well, let’s turn that into a diversion. I will give you a few questions about your history with music, and you give me the song that comes to your mind (my largely embarrassing answers will be in parentheses, for example’s sake). If you don’t know or don’t remember, just skip that particular question. Or make up your own.

Enjoy!

1. Your prom theme? (“End of the Road,” Boyz II Men)
2. Your first album? (“Thriller,” Michael Jackson. In LP format.)

8. Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating? (“Dirty Laundry,” Don Henley)
9. The first song that blew your mind? (“Dear God,” XTC)
10. And finally: The song that forever changed your perception of music? (“Bad/Ruby Tuesday” medley, U2)

10. perception-changer = Elvis Costello in general, was the first "smart" lyrical artist I can remember who convinced me that rock'n'roll didn't have to be "dumb" or pedestrian...If I had to pick a single song, it would be "(I Don't Wanna Go To) Chelsea"

Posted by: Mohaski at May 22, 2007 3:53 PM

1. Your prom theme? "No Sleep Till Brooklyn", Beastie Boys. It wasn't technically our prom theme (perish the thought!), but we did blast it in my boyfriend's camaro and shouted at the top of our lungs all the way to and from the (terribly lame) event.

2. Your first album? I can't remember if it was "Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em" by MC Hammer or "Sign of the Hammer" by Manowar. Hmm... There seems to be a unifying theme of bad taste and hammers.

3. Your first single? Papa Don't Preach, Madge. Nuthn' wrong with that!

4. The first time you got drunk/stoned? "Jeremy," Pearl Jam was also mine for the drunkin'. Pretty sure it was Junior Vasques first time I got high.

6. Your first break-up? The first one that really hurt was Sinead O'Connor and Tori Amos' "Boys for Pele".

7. The first song lyrics you consciously memorized (and do you still remember them)? ("Hotel California," Eagles, hells yeah)

8. Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating? ("Jingle Bells Rock" Ice skating at the Rockefeller Center)

9. The first song that blew your mind? ("Ohio" Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young)

10. And finally: The song that forever changed your perception of music? "Loser", Beck and "Laughter" by Josh Wink (I think it was called "Laughter"...)

6. Your first break-up? "Friend is a Four Letter Word," CAKE.

8. Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating? "Carwash." I don't know why.

9. The first song that blew your mind? "FLOOD," the whole album, by They Might Be Giants. It was 1990, and I was 9 years old. And I later met my husband due to a TMBG shirt, too.

10. And finally: The song that forever changed your perception of music? I'll go with "Silent All These Years," Tori Amos. Awoke my fledgling feminist/smug liberal/indie freak conciousness in college. I still love her.

Posted by: Tammy at May 22, 2007 3:58 PM

jessi1974, I was in 8th grade when that song came out. The biggest nerd in my class was my boyfriend, and he broke my heart. It seriously sucked. Anyway, you're not that old ;)

• Prom Theme: "I Believe I Can Fly" (What that song has to do with prom still alludes me to this day... but the fact that it was R. Kelly makes this an even *more* odd choice)

• First Album: "World Clique" by Deee-lite (I can't help but giggle at that one.)

• First Single: "One More Try" Timmy T.

• First Time I Got Stoned: Something by the Rolling Stones, and thinking it was the most genious thing EVER.

• First Relationship: "Somebody" by Depeche Mode... le sigh...

• Song most closely identified with ice skating? "Ice Ice Baby" (I'm serious! The song had just come out, and the skating rink was THE happening Friday Night spot.)

• The first song that blew your mind? OK, I know you asked for "song", but "Dark Side of the Moon" was the first album that totally blew my mind (of course it helped that I was stoned out of my mind.)

• The song that forever changed your perception of music? See above.

1. Your prom theme: I had none. I was educated in the stupid French school. No prom.
2. Your first album: Otis Redding's Greatest Hits, on tape for Christmas at age 11.
3. Your first single: Blame It on the Rain, Milli Vanilli. Shut up; it was a "prize" I won from a radio station for being the tenth caller. I was actually trying to request "Cult of Personality" by Living Color.
4. The first time you got drunk/stoned: The Low-End Theory, by a Tribe Called Quest. (That was a GREAT evening).
5. Your first relationship: Both Seal's "Crazy" album and Blood Sugar Sex Magic by the Chilli Peppers.
6. Your first break-up: Hey, Jupiter, Tori Amos.
7. The first song lyrics you consciously memorized: virtually every known Beatles song. (My mom is a Beatlemaniac). Yes, I still know most of them.
8. Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating: God. I hate to say this, but I think it was that Marky Mark song for me too. You see, Roller skating in Christiansburg, Va is something of a cultural high coup.
9. The first song that blew your mind: My dad is a classical pianist. He used to make sit with my ear against the piano when he played Beethoven and Faure when I was 3. That was pretty mind-blowing. Pop culture reference-wise..... I dunno. Maybe "When Doves Cry"?
10. And finally: The song that forever changed your perception of music: Not to sound like an intellectual douchebag, but there is no such song. My perception of music is constantly changing. If you put a gun to my head, I guess I might say "Who Let the Dogs Out?" because I didn't know how shitty pop music could actually get.

Thanks Jen - I'm feeling old. Wasn't even my prom...my 'guy friend' that I had the hots for broke up with his GF two weeks before HIS prom. I agreed to go as his date. Then he left me at the table all night at a school I didn't even attend to go make out with her during the entire prom. Ouch. Not that I'm still bitter or anything. 'Scuse me while I go carve his name into my leg.

Prom (actually called School Ball or Formal where I'm from)... Jump Around, House of Pain
First album... Hits of Abba LP, aged 5, for the grand price of 50c from next door neighbour's garage sale
First single... Like a Virgin
Drunk... S Express, S Express
Stoned... Portishead Dummy
First relationship... Hysteria, Def Leppard
First breakup... See above
Song lyrics (I fancied a boy who was into ACDC, the band and thought this would impress him if I kind of hummed it in his presence)... Shook Me All Night Long, ACDC
Ice skating song... She's Got Legs, ZZ Top (sadly this is because the boy mentioned above asked me to tell a pretty girl ice-skating that he'd dedicated this song to her, meekly I agreed)
First song that blew my mind... Shandi, Kiss (odd choice, but I was only 4)
Song that changed my perception of music... Numb, Portishead (could have been the drugs too, mind)

I really love the fact that in this thread, we can see the difference between music that people had foisted upon them and then the music that they chose for themselves.
Also, can those of us who have been on earth long enough to have bought a 45-rpm single form a support group please? I'm hugely intimidated by the number of people who were apparently pre-pubescent in the post-vinyl phase (and I'm only 42).

6. Your first break-up? "Breaking up is hard to do." Neil Sedaka (after dumping the first person I'd REALLY been in love with (and thought I was going to marry), I turned it to an Oldies station for a pick me up, stupid happy 50's or 60's song. And then that F*cker came on. I started bawling hysterically.)

1. Your prom theme? Aerosmith, Don't want to miss a thing. I'm glad it wasn't actually a good song, because being a prom theme automatically ruins any song.
2. Your first album? Kris-Kross
3. Your first single? Billy Joel, We Didn't Start the Fire.
4. The first time you got drunk/stoned? 3 Doors Down, Loser. That's sad.

I'm going to post this and then go back and look at everyone elses lists to see who my kindred souls are.

1. Your prom theme? I don't remember. Is "douchebag date who was pissed at me for running late even though he had graduated the year before and thus spent all night refusing to dance with me, only to dance the last dance with a girl he had a crush on before we started dating" a theme? No? How about cinnamon Schnapps?

2. Your first album? "Thriller," Michael Jackson. I played it so much my Fisher Price tape deck revolted and ruined the cassette tape. So I bought it again.

4. The first time you got drunk/stoned? "Bizarre Ride II," The Pharcyde. So typical, but it's excellent party music.

5. Your first relationship? Anything by The Dead Milkmen, "Punk Rock Girl" especially. He gave me a mixtape with a bunch of their songs on it.

6. Your first break-up? I have no idea.

7. The first song lyrics you consciously memorized (and do you still remember them)? "Joy to the World," Three Dog Night. Hell yes I remember them. I wanted badly to sing along in the car with my Dad when he would blast this and sing the chorus.

8. Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating? "Saturday," De La Soul. I mean, c'mon.

9. The first song that blew your mind? I can't remember exactly the first, although "California Über Alles," by the Dead Kennedy's was definitely one of the ones that did.

10. And finally: The song that forever changed your perception of music: Hmm. This will sound lame but I'm going to say "James Brown is Dead," by L.A. Style. Before then I never fully understood the possibilities electronic music held. I mean, I knew synthesizers, but this was different. The song itself, not so great, but it led me to explore artists from Kraftwerk to Daft Punk through DJ Shadow to Ratatat and Hot Chip today.

Posted by: missmle at May 22, 2007 6:12 PM

oops forgot this one:

3. Your first single? "Deadbeat Club," The B52's

Posted by: missmle at May 22, 2007 6:15 PM

This is gonna be embarrassing. My late 80's/early 90's suburban roots are gonna show, big time.

1. Your prom theme? "Hold on to the Nights" by Richard Marx. (I KNOW. My school sucked.)
2. Your first album? "True Blue" by Madonna.
3. Your first single? "I Love the Rainy Night" by Eddie Rabbit. (I was five. Cut me some slack.)
4. The first time you got drunk/stoned? Don't remember. Heh.
5. Your first relationship? "More than Words" by Extreme. (I was seriously lame once.)
6. Your first break-up? "More than Words" by Extreme. (See how that worked?)
7. The first song lyrics you consciously memorized (and do you still remember them)? "Pour Some Sugar on Me" by Def Leppard, and HELL YEAH!
8. Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating?
9. The first song that blew your mind? "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns N Roses. (And no, I'm not ashamed of this. Appetite for Destruction is a killer album that stands up today.)
10. And finally: The song that forever changed your perception of music? "Pride (In the Name of Love)" by U2. (Still love it, although I've softened on U2 over the years.)

Posted by: Carrie at May 22, 2007 6:18 PM

1. Your prom theme? (I didn't go, but my French teacher always said the school theme should be "The Wall," so I'll go with the Pink Floyd)
2. Your first album? (I think it was a compilation of Scooby Doo theme songs, and don't ask)
3. Your first single? (98 Degrees, "The Hardest Thing," again, don't ask)
4. The first time you got drunk/stoned? (We'll see)
5. Your first relationship? (We'll see)
6. Your first break-up? (Same)
7. The first song lyrics you consciously memorized (and do you still remember them)? (I have no idea, but it was probably something lame like Hanson's "Mmmbop", and yes, I still remember the lyrics to Mmmbop)
8. Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating? ("Snoop Doggy Dog" because the skating rink played a lot of rap)
9. The first song that blew your mind? ("If I Had a Million Dollars" by Barenaked Ladies)
10. And finally: The song that forever changed your perception of music? (I think "Screaming Infidelities" by Dashboard Confessional because I will call that my breakthrough into music with a little more taste)

Man, I'm not that cool. Why didn't my parents like the Ramones or Elvis Costello? They didn't teach me anything about music.

Awesome topic. I'm telling you, these will make a fascinating book someday (or perhaps yet another VH1 series).

1) Your prom theme? I don't know if we had a theme, per se, but "This is the Time" by Billy Joel was definitely the go-to song.

2) Your first album? Billy Joel's Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 and 2. My first CD was (gasp!) Debbie Gibson's "Out of the Blue"

3) Your first single? Tesla's cover of "Signs"

4) The first time drunk/stoned? It hasn't happened yet, and I'm 32.

5) Your first relationship? "Same Aud Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg (actually my second relationship, but the 1st where I fell in love).

6) Your first break up? The "Cold Spring Harbor" album by Billy Joel got me through a miserable summer. Yes, there's a lot of Billy Joel on this list. I grew up in NYC. You got a problem with that?

7) The first song lyrics you consciously memorized (and do you still remember them)? When I was in 6th grade, we had to sing a bunch of songs for our graduation. Our class staged a bit of a rebellion, lobbying for the right to sing a "rock" song instead of the dated crap that had been sung by every graduating class since the 50s. We got our way. The "rock" song? "The Greatest Love of All" by Whitney Houston. For shame.

Do I remember the lyrics? I'm not admitting it if I do. Would you?

8) Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating? I've never able to do either, so I have to go with "Brand New Key" from the Rollergirl scene in Boogie Nights.

9) The first song that blew your mind? "A Long Time Ago" by Jim Croce. It so beautifully encapsulated my desire to find a soulmate that I put in repeat for an hour. Still looking....

10) And finally: The song that forever changed your perception of music? Pearl Jam's "Alive," my first foray into harder rock and opened my horizons considerably.

I may win oldest-living-Pajiba-reader prize.

6. Your first break-up? Same. Not much in the way of relationships, either in intensity or longevity. Just hasn't been a priority in my life.

7. The first song lyrics you consciously memorized (and do you still remember them)? Tie between the Beatles' entire output and the Christmas section of Handel's Messiah. Hell yes, I can still belt them out, but nowadays slightly hampered in that I only know the soprano line, but the voice has dropped to alto.

8. Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating? N/A, didn't go

9. The first song that blew your mind? Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, J.S. Bach. The pipe organ is the original heavy metal instrument, and still f*cking rocks.

10. And finally: The song that forever changed your perception of music? Still happenin' people. Let's start with Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band when I was a kid. Sometime in my late 20's - early 30's caught on that inside all the grunting and shpitting and howls, every now and then someone would plant their feet and belt out a tune (opera). Still trying to unwind the intricacies of chamber music and in the last few years have become a major metalhead (Ozzy's got a new one coming out this week! The Prince of F*cking Darkness still hitting it!). And oh yeah, just catching on to Green Day and MCR.

Let's close this with my theme song (thank you, Bryan Adams):

18 till I die!!!!!

5. Your first relationship? "Goodbye and Go"-Imogen Heap.
6. Your first break-up? "Wonderwall" Oasis
7. The first song lyrics you consciously memorized (and do you still remember them)? "Good Riddance" by Green Day. Definitely remember them, even had I not intentionally learned the words it still would have lodged in my brain by now with each successive lame photo montage I've seen.
8. Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating? I figure skated for 6 years and yet the only song that's coming to mind is "If it makes you happy" by Cheryl Crow. Weird,
9. The first song that blew your mind? "Float On" Modest Mouse
10. And finally: The song that forever changed your perception of music? "12:51" The Strokes. Glad you've just witnessed my transformation from teenybopper to hipster.

1. Your prom theme? I honestly don't remember, but it was a piece of shit... It was 2001. Pick the worst imaginable sappy song from that year.

1. Your prom theme? My school didn't allow dancing, so no music theme for me! It was called "Jr/Sr Banquet" instead of prom and the theme was something gay like "No Night Like Tonight."
2. Your first album? Thriller, on cassette tape
3. Your first single? Well, when I was really little I had a stack of 45's I listened to on my Fisher Price record player, and my favorite was My Baby Takes the Morning Train by Sheena Easton. But the first single I remember buying for myself was a single cassette of Winger!!!!!! That one song they had, what was it? High Enough? Or was that Damn Yankees? Anyway, I know it was Winger. Someone help me out on the song title.
4. The first time you got drunk/stoned? The first time I got drunk was in a Golden Corral that I worked at when I was 16. The boss let us in after hours and I got wasted off Purple Passion. I don't remember a specific song, although since then I've had many drunk/high associations with songs. But not that first time, unfortunately.
5. Your first relationship? Love of a Lifetime, Firehouse- I saw you up there jessi1974 and I feel your pain! How embarassing! But I remember it being very meaningful at the time.
6. Your first break-up? Wonderwall, by Oasis (my first real breakup. I don't count the Firehouse guy since that was like 8th grade)
7. The first song lyrics you consciously memorized (and do you still remember them)? Against the Wind, Bob Seger, and of course.
8. Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating? Without a doubt, Wild Wild West, The Escape Club.
9. The first song that blew your mind? I guess if I have to think this hard about it then it must not really have blown my mind. But songs continue to blow my mind all the time, no matter how many times I've hard them, depending on the circumstances of when/where I hear them and what my mood is. Pink Floyd's Goodbye Blue Sky and Lindsay Buckingham's live version of Big Love can still blow me away at times.
10. And finally: The song that forever changed your perception of music? It's actually an album, and it's totally cliche, but Pink Floyd's the Wall is what really propelled my music tastes to do a 180 at the age of 23.

I don't remember which was first, but I guess it was probably something Beatles or Doors.

My class (1989) voted for Stairway to heaven (we had a lot of classic rock hounds), but the teachers over-ruled the vote.

For some reason this comment reminded me of 8th grade graduation--we wanted to play "We Built This City (on Rock and Roll)" at the graduation but the school wouldn't allow it. Instead we chose "Nothin's Gonna Stop us Now"--even then I thought it was pretty silly. Ooh, we've graduated 8th grade--nothing's gonna stop us now!

PaddyDog said, Also, can those of us who have been on earth long enough to have bought a 45-rpm single form a support group please?

The first album and single I listed were cassette tapes. But now that you mention it, I remember my older sister and I had the soundtrack to Annie on vinyl and listened to it way too much. I also remember a 45-rpm single of hers that she shared with me--"Undercover Angel". I heard that song again in college on my roommate's disco compilation CD and was shocked to discover the true meaning of the song I sang along to at age 4. I'm surprised my prudish parents let us sing that. :)

1. Your prom theme?
"Faithfully," Journey. It gets better, though - oh, wait, actually, the prom *theme* was "Hold onto the Night." The prom *song* was Faithfully. This was in 1995. I have no idea. Somehow "Faithfully" won the student vote, but the girl whose mom was the prom coordinator wanted it to be "Hold onto the Night," so we basically had two songs. I wrote in the Pumpkins' "Luna." This will become a theme.

2. Your first album?
"I'm the Rapper, He's the DJ," DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. Or vice-versa, whatever.

3. Your first single?
A friend got me the Tokens' "We-Mo-Wah" - "in the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight" - which I guess was actually my first single. I've never been much of a singles guy.

4. The first time you got drunk/stoned?
I think it was an Aerosmith song, but that is probably entirely because the first time I drank, my cousins fed me sloe gin fizzes. I am fucking hardcore. Do not step.

5. Your first relationship?
Probably something lame like "Come On, Eileen." It was a school dance.

6. Your first break-up?
I have no idea. Uh... I can't think of what may've been on the stereo at that point. I know I consoled myself by listening to Rage Against the Machine's first album.

7. The first song lyrics you consciously memorized (and do you still remember them)?
My local Fox affiliate, when I was in eighth grade, rewrote "We Didn't Start the Fire" to be about Star Trek: The Next Generation t-shirt. I won a t-shirt by memorizing the words and sending them in. I can't stress this enough: Fucking hardcore. I believe I remember half of them.

8. Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating?
"YMCA."

9. The first song that blew your mind?
"November Rain." I wasn't really allowed to listen to rock yet, so I had to hear it on - this is so lame - church group van rides. But I knew it rocked.

10. And finally: The song that forever changed your perception of music?
In high school, "Rocket" by the Smashing Pumpkins. But after I was already all about music, in '02, when I heard Sleater-Kinney's "Symphony," that fucking blew me away.

I don't remember a lot of those. But here are the ones I do:

First breakup? Basketcase - Green Day (Green Day was huge back then and I wore out that cd)

First guitar solo remembered? Detroit Rock City - KISS (lyrics are usually secondary to me next to guitar playing, the harmonizing in the solo just stuck with me the first time I hear it as a kid)

First song that blew my mind? Eruption - Van Halen (just so many notes flying all over the place, just had no idea how he was doing it, amazing stuff)

First song that changed my perception of music? Eruption - Van Halen (again, that 1:42 blew my mind and changed my perception of music at the same time; it took the bar, smashed it, made its own, and set it really high for both guitar playing and rock in general)

9. The first song that blew your mind? Black Velvet by Alannah Myles.

10. And finally: The song that forever changed your perception of music? I can't honestly say that I have one.

Wow, after really thinking about it music doesn't really play a huge part in my life. I've always just sort of metamorphosed into whatever my current guy/housemates are listening to.

I am a musical chameleon. I suppose I do have a few favourite bands and there are some songs that make my heart feel like bursting but I've only really discovered them in the last few years. Music was never a big influence on me growing up. Although if you'd asked the question about books - my word would you have a 1000 word essay on your hands here.

I noticed so many people saying that they weren't around for singles, or that they're gone, but I still see them in the record stores around here. I wonder if it's a local phenomenon?

Posted by: pinkcheese at May 23, 2007 11:44 AM

Almost all of these categories, epsecially the life-changing ones, have alternate classical answers that I won't bore anybody with. And I'm subbing some questions for reasons listed.

1. Your prom theme? I don't remember
2. Your first album? On vinyl - Duran Duran "Seven and the Ragged Tiger"; on CD - Jane's Addiction "Nothing's Shocking"
3. Your first single? Madness "Our House" on a 45
4. The first time you got drunk/stoned? I don't remember about drunk, and I don't get stoned, but my first trip was They Might Be Giants "Flood"
5. Your first relationship? Howard Jones "What is Love?"
6. Your first break-up? Wasn't really memorable so I'll substitute my great Wake-Up, when I realized that if I didn't leave him, he'd eventually kill me: Tori Amos "Winter" and "Mother"
7. The first song lyrics you consciously memorized (and do you still remember them)? Paul Simon "You Can Call Me Al" and I still sing it really loud every time I hear it!
8. Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating? I did neither. Skateboarded to the Dead Milkmen, though. "Bitchin Camaro" comes to mind.
9. The first song that blew your mind? The Beatles "Come Together" performed by Aerosmith on the Sgt. Peppers movie soundtrack
10. And finally: The song that forever changed your perception of music? It's happened twice, once with a song when I was really young, once with an album when I was older: Pink Floyd "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" from The Delicate Sound of Thunder (which led me to all their original albums), and Tool "Aenima" (which provided tacit permission to be as angry as I was.)

I feel a bit like an extra in High Fidelity.

Posted by: mezzomom at May 23, 2007 11:57 AM

1. "Kiss", Prince
2. Zenyatta Mondatta, The Police (on cassette tape)
3. "Tainted Love", Soft Cell
4. The Wall, Pink Floyd
5. "Mandinka," Sinead O'Connor
6. "She's Lump," Presidents of the U.S.A.
7. "Fuck the Police," NWA -- fuck, yeah!
8. "Another One Bites the Dust," Queen
9. "How Soon Is Now?," The Smiths
10. "Heroes and Villians," The Beach Boys

Posted by: genXmom at May 23, 2007 12:38 PM

1. Your prom theme? I...have no idea. I was probably too drunk by then!

2. Your first album? "No Need to Argue" by the Cranberries

3. Your first single? "Crush" by Jennifer Paige.

4. The first time you got drunk/stoned? Eh...summer of 2000, went to the Red Box with a friend of mine - lots of very heavy House being played that night. Nothing with lyrics that I can recall sadly. I have a feeling California Love by Tupac may have been played, but I wouldn't swear to it.

5. Your first relationship? "Hey Ya" by Outkast (yeah, yeah, I know, but he used to sing it all the time, and dance along, and it was hilarious - much like our relationship!)

6. Your first break-up? "Cannonball" by Damien Rice - I remember realizing I was going to be okay when I put the Guns and Roses version of "Sympathy for the Devil" on repeat, instead of "when you float like a cannonball," etc etc

7. The first song lyrics you consciously memorized (and do you still remember them)? "Waterfalls" by TLC - and no. At least, I can remember the chorus and the verses, but definitely not the rap.

8. Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating? None, I'm afraid. I couldn't afford a walkman until after I stopped rollerblading.

9. The first song that blew your mind? Probably "Tonight, Tonight" by the Smashing Pumpkins. I didn't expect to like because my older brother had listened to them, and I thought it was angry-boy music, but it turned out to be one of the first songs to really get to me.

10. And finally: The song that forever changed your perception of music? Probably "I'm Only Happy When it Rains" by Garbage - before I started listening to Garbage I was basically a teenybopper (okay, a teenybopper who listened to Oasis and Blur, not Boyzone or the Backstreet Boys, but it was basically the same mindset). After Garbage I got into more interesting stuff. Or, since this a difficult question, the whole "Dark Side of the Moon" album by Pink Floyd (I know, I know, cliche).

7. The first song lyrics you consciously memorized (and do you still remember them)? ("Jump Around," House of Pain, and you betcha!)

9. The first song that blew your mind? ("Dear Mama," Tupac Shakur)
10. And finally: The song that forever changed your perception of music? ("Take Five," Dave Brubeck Quartet)

4. The first time you got drunk/stoned? It would have to be "Weather Systems" by Andrew Bird (my favorite artist!!) and I was on mushrooms. Yeah, I took mushrooms before I ever got drunk or stoned.

5. Your first relationship? "Kid A" by Radiohead

6. Your first break-up? the entire album "Here Come the Warm Jets" by Brian Eno. I listened to it on repeat all night, sans sleep.

7. The first song lyrics you consciously memorized (and do you still remember them)? "Herod's Song" from Jesus Christ Superstar (my mom got me really into musicals, alright?)

8. Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating? I never was good at either but whenever I hear "Heartbeats" by The Knife I think about rollerskating.

9. The first song that blew your mind? probably "The Good Die Young" by Harry Belafonte. When I was eight or nine I would put it on while my mother was gone, curl up in her bed and cry. Depressing and ridiculous, I know.

10. And finally: The song that forever changed your perception of music? "Paranoid Android" by Radiohead.

8. Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating? anything that would call for an awkward coupleskate

As, most likely, the oldest living Pajibian, most of these will be before most of you all were born. Nevertheless:

1. Prom Theme: Stairway to Heaven, Led Zeppelin (1973 and 1974)- we were consistent if not particularly creative at my high school, and everybody sang along as we tried to climb that "stairway to heaven," i.e., to get laid.

2. First album: Bat Out of Hell, Meatloaf (1977 -the quadraphonic stereo version; my life is a history of buying failed technologies) Paradise By the Dashboardlight, Indeed Baby!

3. First single: Proud Mary, Creedence Clearwater Revival (1968 - a 45 record [bet most of you do not even know what that is); also bought and wore out several cassettes of Tina Turner's cover; bought a 45 of Build Me Up Buttercup, The Foundations (one hit wonders!) at the same time - a two-fer @ 99 cents.

4. First time drunk/stoned: Disco Inferno, The Trampps (1976 - first time I set out deliberately to get drunk; no Ouzo ever, ever, ever again; no Angels Flight seamless trousers, no Nik-Nik silkscreen shirts, and no more platform boots but won the "Disco King" title three years running).

5. First (serious) relationship: Precious and Few, Climax (1972); Damn she was beautiful and smart and funny and figured out before I did that I was batting (predominantly) for a different team.

6. First (really bad) break-up: Greatest Hits, Patsy Cline. Nobody did, does, or ever will do it better than Patsy.

7. First song lyrics you consciously memorized: Stairway to Heaven (see c.1, supra); Can still sing them and do so annually at get togethers with friends from high school when we return to the scene of the crime(s).

8. Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating: Ring My Bell, Anita Ward (1979-Saturday Night Roller Disco).

9. First song that blew your mind: Night Moves, Bob Seger - Perfect, nothing short of...

10. The song(s) that forever changed your perception of music: West Side Story soundtrack, Bernstein and Sondheim are gods for the ages. They surmount Mount Olympus, all others are roaming in the piedmont.

Hmmmm, I'm seeing a pattern here. Most people never went to prom. The ones that did either don't remember it or it blew monkey dick. The lesson here: don't go.

Sweet baby Jeebus, Rudy, we may have a tie!

Ghods, your post joggled a few memories.

How about that Mary Ellen Hopkins 'Those Were The Days' ? You get sick of it as much as I did?

On the other hand, 2 years ago I was going through all the Who available at the library. Very impressed (favorably) at how well their stuff held up, considering I remembered from when it was new on the radio......

Yeah, those were the days alright, and all praises to the Goddess they're over.

8. Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating? (One of the singsongy bits off "The Execution of All Things", by Rilo Kiley, the one about rollerskating. Or anything by Junior Senior.)

10. The song that forever changed my perception of music: Not a song, but an album, and that album is Paul's Boutique. Sigh.

6. Your first break-up? I must have blocked the very 1st one out...but 9th grade boyfriend: The Rain Song, Led Zeppelin

The first song lyrics you consciously memorized (and do you still remember them)? most of the ABBA cannon and a fair portion of my Mom's Barbra Streisand's Guilty with Barry Gibb (I was convinced that should Babs die or become incapacitated, I could take over becasue I had red hair and was certain that I sounded exactly like her, that's how I thought celebrity worked as a child...like the Dread Pirate Roberts) and I can still sing it all!
8. Song most closely identified with roller/ice skating? The Look of Love, can't remember the performer...roller rink

GAH! Did Led Zeppelin really play that big of a formative role in my life?!?! I sound like some aging 70's era hippie type. I swear I'm only 34.

Does anyone else approximatly my age remember the the trend of being fascinated by 60's-70's folk and classic rock in the late 80's-early 90's? The only current music I listened to during those years was REM. Everything else was the Dead, Doors, CSN, Dylan, Van Morrison, Hendrix, Stones, Beatles, etc.

Louise, I was born in '74 and I love all that stuff. What drives me crazy is trying to find current music worth listening to. I feel like one of those cranky old adults who like to tell you about how much better music was in their day. But...it really was, right?

Posted by: bartap at May 25, 2007 3:11 AM

Louise:

I am 33, and everyone I knew my senior year was in to The Dead, The Doors, The Who, Zepplin, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, anything 60's to early 70's. The only "current music was REM and The Cure, then grunge him hard, and everyone was into Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Jane's Addiction, and of course The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Ah, memories. We were so freaking cool in our cammo and flannel.

1. Prom theme? We don't have a prom as such in Canada, but at my grade 13 graduation it was all about Tupac's California. Imagine, if you will, a bunch of middle class white kids (less than 10 kids of "ethnicity" at my high school) in binding formal wear getting their gangster freak on. Embarassing to even think of it now.

2. First album? Kick by Inxs. My equally obsessed friend and I would crouch over my shitty plastic boombox, ears pressed to the speakers to catch every little nuance and sigh in Michael Hutchence's voice.

3. First single? One of the two singles I've ever bought, More than Words by Extreme, followed shortly by that summer's OTHER big time ballad, Everything I Do (I Do it For Parantheses) by Bryan Adams.

4. First time drunk/stoned? Nautical Disaster by the Tragically Hip.

5. First relationship? Fix You by the Doughboys and The First Day of Spring by the Ghandarvas.

6. First breakup? Ugh, Black by Pearl Jam. Really, though, was there any other "woe is me" song at the time?

7. First memorized song lyrics? Guns in the Sky by the aforementioned Inxs. And do I remember them? Hell yeah! Right down to MH's little cackling laugh/grunt thing he does at the beginning of the song.

8. Song closely identified with roller/ice skating? Spirit in the Sky by somebody I can't remember right now. I always thought it was Cheap Trick, but maybe that was just wishful thinking. My dad and I used to go to the free skate at a local rink every Sunday and they'd play all these horribly crappy tunes. We used to race each other around the rink and when Spirit in the Sky played, as it did every Sunday, my dad would start air guitaring and hopping around on one skate with his leg out in front of him like Angus Young on blades. I was that age where everything your parents do is kind of lame, but my dad was so cool - he just didn't care what people thought of him. Awesome.

9. First song that blew my mind? Shakey Thing by Furnaceface. Furnaceface was this local Ottawa band that was huge with my group of friends. They were a little punk, maybe a little funk, a whole lot of sampling and so wickedly funny. Over the years I saw them probably 10 times, but I'll always remember sitting with my dad in the stands at an outdoor Bryan Adams/Steve Earle/Extreme concert (I sort of wish I was joking) that Furnaceface was opening and choking on my popcorn when I heard the following:

"We all know that everyone is equal to their brother, so how come one shakey thing is better than another? Don't worry about the size of your shakey thing, cause size don't mean shit. Just cause you got a nice pencil, it don't help your pen-man-ship!"

Seriously, little 13-year-old me just about had a coronary when I realized that I was sitting beside my dad and listening to a song about (in a whisper) penises.

10. The song that forever changed my perception of music? Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. I can't help but think that Kurt Cobain would be horrified, as I'm sure he was then, to think about these legions of kids tapping into his music as their one saving grace, but the moment I heard that song was the moment my musical tastes changed from whatever-the-fuck-is-on-the-radio to die hard rock girl. My dad (there I go with my dad again...just so you know, I do have a mom and she loves music, too, but only insofar as it extends to the Rolling Stones, the be all and end all as far as she's concerned) bought me the Nevermind album for Valentine's Day one year. I promptly took it to school and BLEW MY FRIENDS' MINDS with how "hardcore" I was. Which I was, because the airwaves were chock full of easy listening, dance and R&B at the time and - gasp! - these Nirvana fellas really didn't fit in.

1. I don't actually remember a prom theme, I think it was some sort of marti gras theme. But I remember our class theme "What a Long Strange Trip its Been" and for my class that seemed right.

2. The first tape I really remember getting was Poison - Flesh and Blood. I begged for this tape for Christmas and my mom's compromise was that if I got it, I could never show my dad the cover art since it was a tattoo! (scandalous!)

3. I wish I could remember.

4. The first time, it was at the beach, there was no music but the sound of the waves which makes me love the ocean even more then I should.

5. So my first boyfriend introduced me to the Doors and Riders on the Storm in the 8th grade. It was mind blowing.

6. More then words - Extreme. It was 1991, what would you expect? And then I went to my cousins wedding 2 years ago and that was their first dance, how weird?

7. The theme song from Ghostbusters 2 when Bobby Brown sang it. My friend and I spent an entire night memorizing the song. I am pretty sure while drunk I would remember the whole thing.

8. I think it might be the chicken dance, since I only went roller skating at a ring 3 times maybe before the age of 11 and I don't really remember anything except doing the chicken dance.

9. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana. I think that song was my wake up call for high school. It came out when I was a freshman and I was blown away by its rawness and heartache. Love it still.

10. Last Goodbye - Jeff Buckley, Its such an amazing song and I could listen to it over and over again.
