Songs You Hate that You Secretely Love

An Evening Comment Diversion / Dustin Rowles

Comment Diversions | May 27, 2009 | Comments (172)

Annoyingmouse’s unpleasant experience provides the source for tonight’s comment diversion. He writes:

“Have you ever been absent-mindedly listening to music and kind of getting into it and then you realize it’s a song/band that you despise, and then you’re really depressed?

“At work this morning I was tapping my foot along and bobbing my head to a song and then I noticed it was “Coming Undone” by Korn. I actually stopped the song and looked around to see if anyone saw me. It was very embarrassing. Also what the fuck is that doing on my iPod?”

I’d consider that inexcusable but for the fact that I can’t bring myself to turn the radio dial when a song by either The Fray or Snow Patrol comes on. I know they’re bad, but damnit: They’re so goddamn listenable. I hate myself. And I hate you, “Crashing Cars.”

How about you folks?

My Happy Ending by Avril Lavigne.

ONE, of the reasons why I keep a scoped high-powered rifle in case she comes within 1000 yards of my immediate perimeter.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at May 27, 2009 8:36 PM

I’d consider that inexcusable but for the fact that I can’t bring myself to turn the radio dial when a song by either The Fray or Snow Patrol comes on.

Those bands are completely interchangeable. I always find myself singing "How to save a life" by Snow Patrol. It's terribly shameful.

Posted by: Heathen at May 27, 2009 8:40 PM

BSlim, ME TOO. Argh. I hate that I like that song.

"Bye, bye, bye" by N'Sync.

That one song by Fallout Boy with the video where they're on a carousel.

Posted by: figgy at May 27, 2009 8:51 PM

"If U Seek Amy" Britney Spears.

Also? A handful o' Disturbed songs.

Tell no one. My street cred depends on it.

Posted by: CinnabarriGirl at May 27, 2009 8:54 PM

'Womanizer' by Britney Spears.

Posted by: figgy at May 27, 2009 8:55 PM

This is super embarrassing, but that Katy Perry song "Waking Up In Vegas" is my guiltiest pleasure. And I totally HATE her as a person!

I second (third?) all the Snow Patrol and The Fray sentiments, as well. Oh also, any Jason Mraz songs.

I swear I'm super indie and cool in real life, guys. For realz.

Posted by: marebear at May 27, 2009 8:55 PM

Anything by Tally Hall. I really don't like white rappers, especially white rappers who try to be ironic and cool at the same time with it, but their music is pretty enjoyable despite the whrap.

Posted by: Lucas at May 27, 2009 8:57 PM

Bleed It Out by Linkin Park.

I just love the cadence! I love it for the cadence! Why, God, why won't you people understand?!

Posted by: JakesAlterEgo at May 27, 2009 8:58 PM

Ah guilty pleasure music.

At the moment my two biggest are If You Seek Amy and Disco Stick (or whatever its called) by Lady Gaga.

As one whose preferences in music lie primarily in rap, I hang my head in shame.

Posted by: Braski at May 27, 2009 9:03 PM

Hmmm, Garth Brooks' Friends in Low Places.

And anything by the Dandy Warhols, because I'm pretty sure that I'm not cool enough to listen to them.

Posted by: Steven Lloyd Wilson at May 27, 2009 9:12 PM

"I Got Friends in Low Places."

I'm so ashamed.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at May 27, 2009 9:13 PM

i will drop everything i am doing to just simply get down when "Low" by Flo Rida hits my ears.

With them baggy sweat pants and the reeboks with the strap!!!!!!!!

You know what? I'm not even ashamed of this.

Posted by: arr matey at May 27, 2009 9:15 PM

"Eye of the Tiger" completely un-ironically. I'm risin' up to the challenge of arrival.

Posted by: Mrcreosote at May 27, 2009 9:16 PM

I basically have nothing but embarrassing taste in music... Agreed on Lady GaGa (I don't know if she makes really good bad pop or really bad good pop music). I'll add the new Idol song "No Boundaries" to the pile. Terrible terrible song, but I find it... kinda catchy?

I also REALLY like "Thinking of You" (Katy Perry), though her delivery of the song is so warbly and bizarre and it's a basic pop song.

And of course: Taylor Swift's "Love Story." So damn catchy.

Posted by: whatBENwatches at May 27, 2009 9:16 PM

The Eagles, most especially, Desperado (whyyyy don't you come to your senses.....) ((but also Take it Easy, cause there's a girl, my lord, in a flatbed Ford)) (((hanging head in shame....))).

Posted by: Codger at May 27, 2009 9:18 PM

I don't see the point in being ashamed of any of my guilty pleasures. If you like something, you like it, and the rest of the world can suck it. That's why I hold my head high when my coworkers laugh at me and try to trip me for hanging up signed photos of Jamie Lynn Spears.

Although, I did enjoy listening to a Fall-Out Boy song a few times before getting sick of it, and THAT'S embarrassing.

Posted by: SaBrina at May 27, 2009 9:18 PM

Another one! (my itunes is FULL of guilty pleasures):

"You and I Both" by Jason Mraz.

Posted by: figgy at May 27, 2009 9:18 PM

I refuse to be ashamed of my Spice Girls love. REFUSE I SAY!!! Groove it, shake it, move it, make it, who do you think you are?

A woman with her undergraduate degree in music who can't quit mid-90's pop despite her marked preference for rock, that's who.

Posted by: Genny (also Rusty) at May 27, 2009 9:20 PM

As if to prove my first point, I unashamedly like half of the songs mentioned already. I didn't even realize I was supposed to be ashamed of "Low," but perhaps as a Floridian that's to be expected. I'm not even ashamed of my middle school performance of Spice Girls' "The Lady Is A Vamp." I probably should be, though.

Posted by: SaBrina at May 27, 2009 9:26 PM

The Fray? I understand Snow Patrol, but The Fray? For shame.
Honestly, I love moshing to Since You Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson and will do it if I'm around a crowd of people. I'm just that ridiculous. Michelle Branch is my Achilles heel, I kid you not, she's pretty good, in my opinion.
Oh, and I also get choked up listening to "If I Can't Have You" if it's on the radio. Well, not choked up, but it strikes some kind of chord.

Posted by: Kamikaze Feminist at May 27, 2009 9:29 PM

"Ray of Light" by Madonna

and

"Believe" by Cher.

Hey, the songs are very catchy.

Posted by: alphawhiskey at May 27, 2009 9:35 PM

Candy by Mandy Moore.

I will always sing it and then yell at myself as soon as I realise what's going on which is almost always around "I'm cravin' for you, I'm missin' you like cand-dyyyy yeahhh eee yeahhh!"

They still play it on the radio here in Australia. More often than you'd think :S

Posted by: joyeetargh at May 27, 2009 9:38 PM

that snow patrol song about taking back the city.
it just sounds so... 70's and summery and that woah-oh-oh part makes me happy.

and it's so douchey.

Posted by: gp at May 27, 2009 9:40 PM

Figgy I love "You and I Both" too!! It's the only reason I own that full CD (Ish, I can't believe I admitted that. Jason Mraz is such a toked out dickbag though.

BSlimI also love that Avril song! I'm not even ashamed of it since I legitimately dislike all her other "songs."

And I think I've trumped you all...I am going to a Third Eye Blind show on Sunday. And I'm purely excited about it because I love them. Without shame.

Posted by: Felicia at May 27, 2009 9:44 PM

i will drop everything i am doing to just simply get down when "Low" by Flo Rida hits my ears.

Hehe arr matey ! I can't dance to the song AT ALL. It's like my arms and legs buckle completely and just will not move! I DON'T KNOW WHYYYY!!!!

Posted by: joyeetargh at May 27, 2009 9:44 PM

I admit nothing, NOTHING!

Thanks for The Memories - Fall Out Boy
Love Game - Lady GaGa
Anything by Justin Timberlake. Fuck it, dudes got game.

Now where's my copy of The Chronic.

Posted by: admin at May 27, 2009 9:46 PM

joyeetargh, I think yours takes the cake. Mandy Moore. Candy. Holy Shit.

Felicia, I always have and always will unabashedly proclaim my 3eb love and follow them around like a puppy to any show they play within 2 hours of my home.

Posted by: Kate at May 27, 2009 9:48 PM

I must listen to Everytime by Britney Spears whenever it comes on. This isn't even like a normal, guilty pleasure sense where I enjoy bopping around to it from time to time. I just simply HAVE to listen to it. I think it's the weird background noise that gets me. Yes, I know that's a terrible explanation.

Posted by: messyhead at May 27, 2009 9:50 PM

admin yes, Thanks for the Memories - auuuughhhhhh!!! Why? WHY DO I SING ALONG TO YOU!!!!!

Posted by: joyeetargh at May 27, 2009 9:52 PM

This is interesting. Te other day I was at my friend's house and he started playing me songs we used to listen to when we were still at school. Lots of silly 90s pop which I realised I still like and felt weird about it. These were tunes we used to listen to on the radio or on MTV. Back then we weren't into one style and we did not afford CDs and music magazines so our music knowledge was whatever was being played regularly. In the 00s I developed better appreciation for music and got into rock, prog, metal, blues etc but when I listen back to those old tunes, I still like them and I realise that although as people who we feel are in the know we wrinkle our noses when we hear generic pop songs the truth is that many songs are actually catchy and I can easily see why for anyone who's not deeply into music, the singles played on the radio are fine. Being very popular, some songs also remind me of particular eevents in life so some guilty pleasures exist simply because they have more to them than just being good music.

Coldplay are also a guilty pleasure. They whine too much, and does anybody know what the fuck they are whining about? But their songs are still good (some of them at least)

Posted by: barf at May 27, 2009 9:52 PM

Props for the Snow Patrol secret love, I even saw them in concert (shut up! It was $15), and I've got to say, they are very energetic and entertaining performers.

I also like that damned single ladies song. It's catchy, and I don't listen to commercial radio, so I haven't got sick of it....yet.

Posted by: Agente Provocatrice at May 27, 2009 9:56 PM

Generally, I reject the notion that indie-art is superior to main-stream-art simply by the merit that it's indie. Some of the best films are studio made. Some of the best music is studio made. Some of the worst movies/music is indie.

You aren't cooler just because you like shit no-one has heard of. You aren't less cool because you dig the shitty and mass marketed.

And nobody - none of you people - should ever be embarrased for any reason because you like something mainstream. You should never be embarrassed for liking ANY art!

What am I seeing above? You people are embarrased for likeing Katy Perry, Linkin Park, Britney Spears, Avril Levigne... and on and on. Is nobody embarrased for liking the Black Keys? No. And it's not because they're just awesome. It's because you would never think to be embarrased over something so "indie."

You know what? I liked the Terminator movie. It wasn't well scripted, but it was fucking fun. And I like Justim Timberlake because his music is AWESOME to dance to. I like eating at burger king instead of the little diner down the street, buying my coffee from Starbucks because it's fucking delicious and jerking off to picture of Pamela Anderson rather than Zooey Deschanel.

But then again, I have something called "self-confidence."

Posted by: superasente at May 27, 2009 9:57 PM

Ironically, all of the songs listed (aside from the Garth Brooks) are in my regular listening rotation. WOO MANDY MOORE!

...anyone else all about Hillary Duff? I love Come Clean, Wake Up AND So Yesterday. Also Perfect Day by Hoku. Seriously. AWESOME.

Posted by: popejenn at May 27, 2009 9:57 PM

alright...i'll put it all on the table:

I cannot resist any song by Billy Joel.

I have absolutely no explanation for this...it is just part of the fabric of my being.

I know all the words to "Piano Man" and I sing it with gusto in my car...by myself.

Posted by: arr matey at May 27, 2009 9:58 PM

And really, really, poor taste, apparently. Art or women, you pick.

Posted by: Kate at May 27, 2009 9:59 PM

That there was to superasente

Posted by: Kate at May 27, 2009 10:00 PM

Oh God, this one hurts to admit. Really, really hurts. Here goes...

*deep breath*

I like "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus.

*runs off to hide*

Posted by: Melissa at May 27, 2009 10:01 PM

Kate, don't you see -- liking these things doesn't mean I have bad taste. Not in movies, music or women!

I like Zooey Deschanal. I like the Black Keys. I just don't define myself by the like or dislike of any of these things. I'm not "more cool" or "less cool" for liking them.

Your perspective is what I'm complaining about. You don't see that yours is just an opinion. I can like Terminator Salvation and you can hate it -- but you're not more right than me and I shouldn't feel embarassment for liking it.

Posted by: superasente at May 27, 2009 10:04 PM

ugh, last week i found myself dancing in my seat to the new black eyed peas song, loving it until fergie screeched in.

oh and i openly love 'you and i both'

Posted by: samma at May 27, 2009 10:07 PM

Melissa, stay strong sister. I too have heard one of her songs and I dug it. I really was bopping my head to it until someone said who it was. I had to shriek in terror and hide my shame.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at May 27, 2009 10:08 PM

How do you define bad taste, then?

Posted by: brian at May 27, 2009 10:14 PM

Kate: When I first came to this site I wrote Dustin an e-mail because of the poor review he wrote on the movie "Citizen Cane." He simply thought it was too slow, void of suspense, and archaic. It didn't resonate with him. I on the other hand, think the movie is the most moving, influential morality tale I've ever seen.

So who has better taste? Me or him?

You can cast your judgement on us, but at the end of the day the only definition of "bad taste" that matters is your own. You don't have to agree with my taste in movies/music/women -- and I don't have to care. That's what I meant when I said I had self-confidence. I mean that if I like something, that's all that matters.

I simply don't define people as having "bad taste" or "good taste." Thats for people who can't understand that their opinions are just that -- opinions.

I'm not embarrassed of my opinions -- whether they're regarding movies, music, food, art, women, men, clothes, or any of a million different things -- and none of you should either.

Posted by: superasente at May 27, 2009 10:19 PM

I got something worse than "Coming Undone": The mashup of "Coming Undone" and "Lean Wit It". I can't fight it, dammit!

Also:

- Nickelback "Rock Star"
- Puff Daddy "Come With Me" (mostly for Kashmir)
- Coheed and Cambria "Welcome Home" (aka the theme music from the '9' trailer)
- Beyonce "Get Me Bodied"
- Marilyn Manson "Beautiful People"

Probably 10-20% of my MP3s are full of this.

Posted by: Vermillion at May 27, 2009 10:27 PM

It helps to know I'm not alone, Optimus Rhyme!

Posted by: Melissa at May 27, 2009 10:27 PM

So the core of your argument is not that bad taste shouldn't matter, but that the concept of taste doesn't really exist.

I am happy, then, disagreeing with you mightily. Implying that other people lack confidence is in poor taste. But considering you don't believe in the concept, I can see how that wouldn't mean much to you.

Why come on a review site if you don't believe that opinions on art matter?

Posted by: Kate at May 27, 2009 10:28 PM

I could have sworn, superasente, that is was for songs/bands you normally hate, not ones considered uncool. At least that was the question I was answering.

Posted by: Vermillion at May 27, 2009 10:31 PM

I wanted to hate Justin Timberlake (because seriously, N*Sync makes my brain bleed) UNTIL I saw him on SNL in 2003. Holy crap, he was both great in sketches and his live performances were a-ma-zing. So, yeah, any shame in loving him died when first I saw him put on the big rubber omelet suit ("Bring it on down to OMELETTEVILLE!").

That said, I'd say my biggest songs-I-hate-but-secretly-love all fall into the shitty 80s pop ballad category. My real taste in music is 99% angry chicks with pianos or malcontents raging on guitars (Tori, White Stripes, Jawbreaker, etc) - but God help me if Foreigner or Richard Marx comes on the radio in my car. I just can't help myself - I WANNA KNOW WHAT LOVE IIIIIIIIIIISSSSS! I want you to show me.

Posted by: Tammy at May 27, 2009 10:39 PM

"Photograph" by Nickelback.

Goddamnit. My face is red, like that time I called an insect "needlebutt" in front of my fifth grade teacher and had to sit out afternoon recess.

Posted by: Cat at May 27, 2009 10:39 PM

Hm, it's a tough crieria. I have some definite secret pleasures, but I can usually tell a shitty band off the bat. I had this sort of experience when I heard Panic At The Disco's "Nine In The Afternoon" the first time, but I grew to appreciate their new sound and the fact that they were not the band I remembered hating.

I got nothing, really.

Posted by: ChristianH at May 27, 2009 10:40 PM

I might add that I hate everything else they have ever written, including birthday cards to their grandmothers when they were six.

Posted by: Cat at May 27, 2009 10:42 PM

Anything by Savage Garden or Aqua. Reminds of junior high turmoil, as well as my horrible taste in music back then. And that I had a HUGE heart on for a gay Australian.

Posted by: naive_charm at May 27, 2009 10:47 PM

I can't think of any song I like that I'm ashamed of. I don't listen to radio anymore, because I have an iPod, but if I hear a song in a store or restaurant and I like it, I like it, I don't really care who it comes from. If I like it enough, I'll look it up on iTunes, decide whether or not it's worth a buck, then either buy it or forget it.

I don't give a fuck whether my personal tastes in anything jibe with anyone else's. If someone likes the same stuff I like, cool. If not, whatever.

Posted by: Slash at May 27, 2009 10:49 PM

Dear Lord...
"Figured You Out" by Nickelback.
I even sing along to it... ya know, after I'm sure everyone's left the house and the doors are locked and my phone is turned off and I'm CERTAIN that no one is dropping by.
Getting caught listening might be more embarrassing than being busted shooting up crank or watching tranny porn.
Hmmm, no... definitely more embarrassing.

I cop a lot of shit from friends and boyfriend for absolutely adoring Pink.
But my shame is Diva by Beyonce

Posted by: Seraf at May 27, 2009 10:51 PM

Dustin wrote: "I actually stopped the song and looked around to see if anyone saw me. It was very embarrassing...I hate myself."

He's embarrased to like something.

Figgy: "I hate that I like that song."
Marebear: "This is super embarrassing..."
Tracer: "I'm so ashamed."
And on and on...

Not everyone did it, but enough people to clearly define the theme of this comment diversion: What music are you ashamed to like? Rather than participate in this spineless endeavor Vermillion, I've chosen to criticize it.

Kate: Opinions on art aren't meaningless. They simply can't influence what I like and dislike. I visit this site over the thousands of others because I frequently find that I agree with the reviewers. They do more than just "scathing reviews." They're often very fair, and I like that. But just because someone doesn't like Terminator Salvation doesn't mean that I must dislike it. Also the site is loaded with other goodies such as the nightly comment diversion, which you well know.

Oh, too right on Savage Garden. And Roxette. Totally must hear, and totally, totally shameful. "You got the look ...

Can I get a ruling? Eurythmics / Annie Lennox - shameful or not? I just can't tell any more. (That's a lie. I never could.)

Posted by: BierceAmbrose at May 27, 2009 11:00 PM

I'm literally not ashamed for any of my music loves. You know I mean business. This is coming from someone who will sometimes flip channels until I find a Celine Dion song that I can wail along with. I have no shame.

But I'll play along. The first time I was ever caught singing along to a U2 song was mortifying, and I'll tell you why: I couldn't have been more than 6 years old, and I hated them, every last one of them, especially Bono, because my parents used to leave us with our grandparents to go see U2 concerts at the Sky Dome. Also, my mom would often muse about the sexiness of Bono. They (mom and dad) would occasionally play their CD's in the car at top volume, refusing to change to Sharon, Lois and Bram until the song was done. This BOILED MY BLOOD.

Posted by: Ling at May 27, 2009 11:00 PM

Well, no you don't have to like or dislike it because the site deems it so. Tastes are different. So is opinions on entertainment value over artistic endeavors.

But seriously, knock it off with the "I have the confidence and you don't, you spineless people, nyah nyah nyah."

superasente: if you emailed Dustin to bitch about his Citizen Kane review, you're a hypocrite (unless your "taste" philosophy hadn't developed until, like, now).

But in principal, I agree with you a bit, and I chalk up the scathingness of your comments to a bad mood.

Posted by: Ling at May 27, 2009 11:04 PM

I'm not going to apologize for it, Kate. If someone is embarrased or ashamed to like something, it's a good indication they lack self-confidence.

Songs You Hate that You Secretely Love

Simple topic, superasente and people have given simple, direct answers. Well, everyone except you and you want to turn it into a debate over indie vs. mainstream which is completey off topic.

Hey, I dislike Grizzly Bear, of Montreal and lots of other indie darlings as much as I dislike most mainstream rock. I'll praise the new Star Wars and blow raspberries at T:S just as I will for any indie films that I like or dislike.

I believe that Dustin's purpose was to give all of us a chance to relax and make silly comments... which, come to think of it, you've succeeded admirably.
Bravo.

(And Pamela Anderson is homely.)

Posted by: Spender at May 27, 2009 11:11 PM

Why try to change his mind?

You said people have different opinions and that's fine.

You also said you come to 'jiba because you find the reviews frequently in line with your views.

But *gasp* that wasn't true in all situations. So instead of following principle one, and leaving someone to his own opinion, you tried to change his mind to be more in line with your tastes.

Sounds pretty controlling and lacking self confidence there to me.

Posted by: Kate at May 27, 2009 11:15 PM

Once again, I don't care what you think of me. I don't care what movies you like, dislike, or fucking love. I literally couldn't care less.

My entire point is this: YOU should care! YOU should care enough to be proud of your opinions! You shouldn't be made to feel ashamed of what you like EVER!

People don't like to feel embarrased or ashamed! They avoid those feelings at all cost! Some people never take a single chance in their life because they can't bear the thought of feeling those feelings! AND THOSE PEOPLE HAVE NO SELF CONFIDENCE!

Yes, you people who are embarrassed to like the music you like should balls up, say fuck the world and their expectations and turn up the fucking volumn on your Katy-fucking-Perry CDs! Buy the extended, directors cut of Terminator Salvation and display it on top of your TV! DO WHAT YOU LIKE AND DO IT WITH PRIDE!!!!

And if you can't, then you are weak, spineless and pathetic.

Posted by: superasente at May 27, 2009 11:19 PM

Fuck. Thread hijack and I made it. sorry, folks.

Well, here is my contribution:

Nickelback. Pretty much their entire first album. I BOUGHT it. I hate it now, but I tried desperately to justify my purchase for a YEAR because

their first single was ok...right? Right?

Posted by: Kate at May 27, 2009 11:20 PM

Spender: I don't think it's a simple topic.

And if you really think my message
is silly (my message being that people
should be proud of their opinions
rather than ashamed of them) then I
feel really bad for you. But you
probably don't think that. You'd be
a fool to think people should be
ashamed of something they like.

You addressed the topic:
"Songs I Thought I'd Like, But Didn't"

Go ahead Kate. Tell us what you embarrassed
to like. Tell everyone what you're ashamed
to enjoy. I'd bet dollars to donuts you

Okay, asente. You made your point.
You MADE your POINT.
You MADE your FUCKIN' POINT, buddy.
You made it, grabbed it by the throat, choked it to near death, pummeled it's kidneys, punched in the solar plexus and the waterboarded it 183 times.
I LOVE that Nickelback song. Ya hear me, people?
I LOVE that GODDAM Nickelback song and I don't care how many of you sonsabitches KNOW that I love that Nickelback song.
I'm gonna post this whole freakin' thread on myspace and facebook and twitter so the whole wide world knows that I have a SPINE! And Self-Confidence, dammit. And that I like that ONE Nickelback song!
I only pretended not to like it just so's I could fit in with all these hoity-toity Pajiba-Types.

Nah, I don't hate 'em gp, it's just that when critics gush so much over any band I tend to step back and be a bit more critical before allowing them a chance to win me over. A couple of songs aren't bad but I need to listen with a more open-mind.

I think the embarrassing thing (for me at least) is that there's no real reason why I *do* adore those guilty pleasure songs. Any other song by that artist would be, at best, tolerable and at worst, irritating as all hell. But yet that one song, which is no better-done than any of the other songs, calls to you. Why? WHY?! I have no idea.

At least with non-guilty pleasure songs, I can normally pick out something I like - the lyrics, the harmony, something.

Pretty much anything by Coldplay. One of their songs comes on while I'm driving, I'll find myself cranking it up during the opening, then I hear Chris Martin's voice and think "oh, crap."

The shame...it burns...

I maintain that Coldplay would be ok if it weren't for the damn pretentious, insipid lyrics. But oh those lyrics, so unforgivable.

Kate, gp, let me ask this.
If, as asente believes, we are all truly ashamed and embarrassed to admit our love for these greezy, cheezy tunes... would we be POSTING about it in a public forum?
That was the point I intended to make earlier.
This was supposed to be for fun, dammit.

Posted by: logar at May 27, 2009 11:49 PM

I just reread the thread.
I see that the only reason anyone has
disagreed with me is because I have cast
insulting remarks upon those people
who have showed embarrassment in their
posts. I feel very vehemently that no
person should feel ashamed for the art
they enjoy, but that doesn't give me the
right to go about slinging insults.
When I first began typing I felt calm and
reasonable, but by the end felt myself
slipping into aggressive anger at not
being heard.

Kate, I'm certain you're a fine person
and I have no ill will. Spender as well.

I'll leave you all to your good time, and
I ask only that you consider what I've
said in the future. The next time someone
asks you what you're ashamed to enjoy,
I hope you tell them politely to piss off.

but yeah, back on-topic, and this'll be my (hopefully) last of it, cause you see, i've learned something today.

i've learned that no matter if you listen to bubblegum pop or some pussy nickelback or some dumb country whiskey-downer, we all like stupid, random shit that some other stupid random idiot is gonna crack on.

Posted by: gp at May 27, 2009 11:51 PM

People don't like to feel embarrased or ashamed! They avoid those feelings at all cost! Some people never take a single chance in their life because they can't bear the thought of feeling those feelings! AND THOSE PEOPLE HAVE NO SELF CONFIDENCE!

Um, people might not LIKE to feel those things, but they do. And there are good reasons (evolutionary, social contract-related) for them. And your response to that...is to make folks feel ashamed and embarrassed for being ashamed and embarrassed? If the only opinion that counts is one's own, then why should anyone care that you don't consider them confident?

Did you ever consider it isn't a case of confidence, but of comfort? I don't go blaring my copy of the Little Shop of Horrors soundtrack in my neighborhood because I know, quite well, that nobody there wants to hear it. Of course, they are more than eager to have their cars blaring whatever bass-heavy trash they wish in the middle of the night. If that is "self-confidence", I don't want any.

And equating a person being embarrassed of a song choice to someone with an obviously crippling social disorder is kinda overstating the problem.

Now be quiet so mommy can listen dammit!

Posted by: Newbie at May 28, 2009 12:21 AM

I'm not saying people shouldn't feel embarrassed IN GENERAL. You're right, it's natural.

I'm saying people shouldn't feel embarrassed for enjoying the art they prefer.

"Iris" by Matchbox 20

Pretty much anything by Hanna Montana/Miley Cyrus. My sister forces me to listen to her sometimes, and as much as I hate to admit it, I catch my foot tapping along every once in a while.

Also, why all the hate for Snow Patrol? I will freely admit that I love the hell out of them. If people would bother to listen to something other than "Chasing Cars," they would realize they've done a lot of pretty cool stuff. Especially their older albums.

Figured You Out - Nickleback

I think it was spender who brought up this one (I got lost in The Great Shame Debate) and I agree. Except that it's got some of the dirtiest lyrics and a badass guitar riff.

I like the dirt that's on your knees.

Posted by: joyeetargh at May 28, 2009 1:18 AM

First of all, why is Jason Mraz so shameful? When I'm in a happy mood how can you not love such a cute little hippy? "Sleeping to Dream" is awesome and makes me want a cute little hippy to sing to me.

As for songs I love that I am not ashamed of, I love southern rock when I've had a few frosty cold ones: Skynryd, The Allman Brothers, the Eagles, and new stuff like Cross Canadian Ragweed, American Bang, and the Casey Donahew Band. When you're drinking outside in the summer with a bunch of rednecks, a great time will be had by all.

Now, for the songs I'm totally ashamed to love...I've had 4 glasses of boxed wine so I don't have much shame right now. But I'm going to regret this in the morning.

"Wild Wild West" by Escape Club
anything by Hootie and the Blowfish
anything by Leann Rimes
"Independent Women" by Destiny's Child
"Don't Stop Believing" by Journey...shut up! If you're in the car by yourself you KNOW you're singing at the top of your lungs..."Just a small town girl, living in a looonley woorld"

Posted by: Austin asking for trouble at May 28, 2009 1:21 AM

"Iris" by Matchbox 20 and "Blurry" Puddle of Mud RULE. Nothing shameful there.

Posted by: Irina at May 28, 2009 1:28 AM

Oh blerg. There's something wrong with liking "Don't Stop Believing" or Jason Mraz? Thank gods I don't really give a shit what other people think.

Anyway, mine would probably be "Rockstar" by Nickelback. It will come on and like Dustin, I'll be thoughtlessly bobbing my head along to it until I realize what it is, at which time I have to go flog myself for it.

Posted by: AbbyNormal at May 28, 2009 1:44 AM

I was riding in the car with my friend tonight and "Blame It On the Alcohol" came on. I was all "I LOVE that song! Who is it by?" So we Shazam'd it on the iPhone, and it turns out it's none other than my arch-nemesis, douchebag dujour JAMIE FOXX. Needless to say, I promptly took sharpened pencils to my ear holes as punishment, but I'll be damned if I didn't just download it here at home.

Fuck you, Jamie Foxx. Fuck you and your awesome, amazing song.

Posted by: The Pink Hulk at May 28, 2009 1:47 AM

Oh I am an unabashed lover of Pop- my taste in music SUCKS, all of my friends will tell you that. I proudly cram my iPod full of La Spears, Timberlake, Agulilera, HIM, Backstreet Boys, La Clarkson and Clay to the Aiken. My friends are all very serious mental heads and so try to "correct" me. HAHAHAHA! I've paid money to see Garth Brooks, Phish, Smashing Pumpkins, and MC Chris. OH and Nelly.

Now I love nu-metal! Oh the horror!

Sic Transit Gloria- by Brand New: saw the video once and needed to hear it over and over again. "DIEYOUNGANDSAVEYOURSELF!" This was a decade before Twilight brought that brand of neutered emo-cutting angsty back!

Into the Mouth of Hell We March- by Trivium: it's about fucking zombie pirates sang by kids barely old enough to drink without a trace of irony! Makes me want to eat brains and lick blood from my non-existent blades.

Hell, all of Dragonforce. I know it's cool to like them ironically because of "Through the Fire and Flames" on Guitar Hero. Everyone likes that song, but no one realizes that ALL of them sound exactly like Fire and Flames! In fact, Dragonforce must be contractually obligated to mention both those words plus, "fight" "sorrow" "power" "win" "shadow" "dreams" and "soul" in every single song. I thought they were from Sweden or something- but no, the UK and so English is actually their first language. I've heard J-pop songs with less inane repetition!

And Iced Earth- I've cheerfully told my professors I would be absent due to "explosive diarrhea of the diarrhea and of the mouth, I'm throwing and going- flowing freely from both ends, etc." But when I said I couldn't come to class because I had to go an Iced Earth concert oooooooooo THAT was embarrassing.

Everyone in the show looked like they played World of Warcraft or wanted to beat up people who did. I found TWO OTHER people with WoW tattoos there! I never wanted to leave- my boyfriend had to drag me out before I starting swapping DPS rotations with my new Horde buddies and muttered the whole time about punching Orcs and setting fire to my Iron Maiden high-tops.

I suppose this post would have been better as "Songs Your Friends Hate That You Love".

I found a Dawson Creek soundtrack in amongst my stuff recently - I'd completely forgotten how much I was into that programme as a teenager! So I put the CD in and howled with laughter at the earnest acoustic whimpering that I no doubt knew ALL the words to and applied to my own teen angsty life at the time. I probably should feel more shame than I do. I might stick it on top of my CD rack and play it to freak my friends out...

Guilty pleasure - 'In the air tonight - by Phil Collins - you little bald headed, fax machine dumping, whingey git. But...I know all the words...and will probably sing them...badly...
(I blame the parents though - this was incessantly played during my childhood by my parents...ahem)

Posted by: queenorangina at May 28, 2009 3:41 AM

I thought Journey, especially "Don't Stop Believing", has become unabashedly cool again. Especially after "Glee".

Having said that, my contribution is Lindsay Lohan's "a little more personal". It's an awful song, and it's freaking Lindsay Lohan, but it's played at work and I can't escape it. I feel that may be contender for worst song so far.

Posted by: Merrissa at May 28, 2009 3:57 AM

It's interesting how many times Nickelback come up. This explains why everybody says they hate them but they sell millions of records and sell out an arena easily. I think many people don't give them a chance. I don't know why it's so cool to hate them. Maybe it has something to do with them being Canadian and no one thinks Canadians are cool (sorry to any Canadians out there!). Apart from the mostly pleasent singles, they also have some ROCKING tracks on their albums. And I hear they're very good live and actually know how to play their instruments. Maybe we should give them a chance.

I think supersante and kate both made good points in this thread (though supersante went too far), and now I might be a little in love with kate. Spender made me laugh out loud with that 'shout it from the mountaintops' post.

I've already posted about the embarassing music so right now I'm listening to Opeth, Nothing to be ashamed of there. Excellent music most people would never listen to and radio won't play. Yeah, I've got cred.

Rykker, I almost spat out Froot Loops onto my laptop. The Backstreet Boys define songs you hate but secretly love. I will listen to anything they do pretty much, just to grasp the good old days and remember the 90's!
Blender, While I particularly like what I've heard of Grizzly Bear(The two songs I heard, see, I started listening to them last night), Of Montreal I agree I cannot listen to. So you're not alone in that department.
And as some folks mentioned earlier, Coldplay, well, their first two albums are very good in my opinion, X & Y is OK, Viva La Vida...*Shudders* Cannot stand that damn song about Chris Martin ruling the world. Hell, can't stand pretty much the entire album!

Mrcreosote, how's this for guilty pleasure. I'm going to correct you on your Eye of the Tiger quote.
It's "risin' up to the challenge of our rival".

I'm not ashamed. I love anything related to Philly sports or the Rocky movies. AND WHAT!

Anyhoo...um...I am totally gonna lose my street cred, but I think Justin Timberlake's music is great. I also enjoy a bit of the Britney...post-Slave For You stuff. Daughtry, b/c I loved him on AI. Coldplay, b/c Clocks is playing on the radio right now and it's an awesome song. And I, too, am a sucker for the Snow Patrol/Fray/Augustana schtick. I can't help it.

One more thing...I wouldn't call it a totally guilty pleasure, b/c I feel absolutely no guilt whatsoever...but I'm a giant sucker for 80s hair band ballads. 80 hair band anything, really.

Suck it.

I have really terrible taste in music, and I'm not ashamed of it. HOWEVER, I absolutely flat out loathe Fall Out Boy and everything they represent, and yet I found myself singing along to their new song the other day while I was driving. The worst part was that once I realized what was happening, I still left the radio on that station until the song was over. Blargh.

As a sidenote, I'm glad other people pointed out that "Iris" is by the Goo Goo Dolls so that I didn't have to.

I don't feel embarrassed or ashamed for liking something that is considered too main stream, or too indie/hipster, or too this, or too that. If I like something, then I like it, and if I don't, then I don't.

I'm going to get a little real now, like Dr Phil real (see what I did?! *snort*):

Pajibans can be a little too mean sometimes. superasente was just stating his/her opinion on this topic. I thought that was the whole point of these types of threads. There is no need to brand him/her a troll. I don't see anything "troll-like" about his/her posts.

Ooh! I thought of one!

I don't loathe Greenday for any reason other than Billy Joe Tweenie's voice. (Is that what the lead singer's name is? Whatevs.) He sings like Giles Corey in his death throes. (Whoever gets that reference is ok by me.) And their lyrics are comethefuckon annoying (except Good Riddance, but nostalgia songs don't count ever). But the other day, Boulevard of Broken Dreams came on the radio and I listened to it. Let me be clear: I took the long way home so I could sing along until the end.

Posted by: Ling at May 28, 2009 8:59 AM

I adore Coldplay and I don't care who knows it.

Also...Taylor Swift's "Love Story": Written
by, for, and about a teenage girl. No one over
the age of fifteen should even be willing to admit that they've even
heard of that song. And yet, I do love it. I play it loud in the car.
I sing it to my kids until they implore me to stop. I listen to it
at least once a day. Am I nuts? Baby, just say yes.

Posted by: A Different Kate at May 28, 2009 9:06 AM

I have a few guilty pleasures, but really, they're so "gay", as we used to say in my day, that they have just become part of my personal coolness;-) That said, I'm totally amused, when at the end of Bedtime Stories, which my kids have now watched a few times, the credits play to Journey's Don't Stop Believin'...and my 6 year old daughter digs it and sings along just like me!

Mine: Anything by Gwen Stefani or No Doubt. Because I think she writes moronic, chauvinist lyrics that fuck with young girls' heads, and because turned herself into a man in order to become famous.

But Journey? Phil Collins? There's nothing embarrassing about listening to those guys. They rock.

Posted by: fartygirl at May 28, 2009 9:24 AM

Oh well, at least the folks have it worse than me. They admit to liking "Sugar Sugar" by The Archies and "Winchester Cathedral" by The New Vaudeville Band. But they both admit to despising those bands due to The Archies topping "Honky Tonk Woman" on the Chicago radios Top 40, and "Winchester Cathedral" beating The Beatles and The Beach Boys for best rock song at the grammys.

I also listen to stuff that some pretentious bugger would consider "good" too, so I am balanced and that makes it all ok. But there are songs I know are bad, I listen to them anyway and feel a little guilty.

Ting Tings - That's not my name.
3oh!3 (what kind of band name is that anyway?!) - Don't trust me
Britney - If You Seek Amy
Beyonce - Diva

And finally, U2 makes me batty. My mother played the crap right out of the Joshua Tree CD she owned and it burns my ass to know the words to every freakin' song (which means I am helpless, I have to sing along) on there while hating it passionately!

I perused the comments hoping that someone here would have a more embarrassing entry than the one I am about to cop to, but sadly, no one came close to plunging the depths of shame. But before I tell you the song title I have to tell you a teeny tiny story.

When I was about 7 I had this little Golden Retriever puppy named Ginger. She was totally my dog and I was responsible for caring for her. Well my knuckle dragging brother (I still haven't forgiven him) left the gate open one day and Ginger darted out of the yard and became road kill. I was totally devastated. (To this day I can't eat Strawberry Shortcake without my eyes welling up since my mom thought that would make up for my dead dog). I was beside myself and completely inconsolable.

A couple of days later my mom was driving me to school and a song came on the radio that, at the time, I thought was written just for me about my little dead dog. Years later, I would hear it again and realize how completely screwed up I was as a kid to think that this was about someone's dead dog. Of course, even to this day I get a little teary eyed when I hear it, and my boss hears it playing on my Rhapsody right now and has walked by my office at least twice to make sure I am not drunk.

Anyway, the song--and this is the part where I am so fucking embarrassed I may never return to Pajiba again out pure shame and mortification--is Air Supply's "All Out of Love."

How fucked up is that one of the cheesiest soft rock ballads of the 1980's reminds me of my dead puppy? And how fucked up is it that I just shared this story with a group of relative strangers? And how fucked up is it that my boss may be right and I may still be drunk? Going to make public defender day FASCINATING!!!

Now if you don't mind, I have to silently weep for my dog while I listen to Air Supply one more time.

Oh, and admin, don't feel bad about Celine Dion, I loved Water from the Moon. God, I can never come back to this site again. It's no wonder that I am 32 and never married. It's only a surprise that I don't own at least one kitty cat sweatshirt.

The worst is finding myself jamming to a Maroon 5 song. I can't stand them, I want to hate fuck Adam Levine, and every time I hear it at the gym I totally rock out to that duet he did with Rihanna. Now I need to go take a shower, sink slowly down the wall and weep.

Songs I like that I can't explain...

Rock Star - Nickelback
More than a Feeling - Boston
Rocket Man - Elton John
I've Never Been to Me - Melanie
Africa - Toto
Touch Me - Samantha Fox
Backstreet's Back - BSB
Pump up the jam - Technotronic
Male Stripper - Man Parrish

If I like a song, I like it, and screw the snobs who think it's uncool.
Yes, that includes my love of Abba. And early Britney. And even some Manilow. Suck it, haters!

"Never underestimate the potency of cheap music."

- Noel Coward.

No judging from me, Manther the Panther! I like the Twilight soundtrack, too. It's not the songs' fault they were used for a bad movie...

Do Fries Go With That Shake? by George Clinton

Treena, if loving "More than a Feeling," "Rocket Man," and "Africa" is wrong, then I don't want to be right.

Everything I listen to is awesome.

Everything.

I just noticed I got called the hell out somewhere up there, so I'ma reply. Because the internet is for debates (and for porn).

Dude, superasente. I'm glad to see that you eventually settled down, but I still that I am, in fact, ashamed to like the songs that I said I was ashamed to like. This is because Katy Perry TOTALLY FUCKING BLOWS. She's an annoying pseudo-bisexual ex-Christian Rock singer who wears dumb outfits, and her songs are nonsensical and grammatically atrocious.

It seems that you were just cranky about people possibly being judgmental about anyone with "mainstream" tastes. That's not true though. Iron Man was a totally mainstream superhero movie and it's relatively well-loved around these parts. What about Forgetting Sarah Marshall? 40 Year Old Virgin? Look back to the Just Friends review: a cheesy romcom that nonetheless got praise. We don't judge things for being "mainstream," we judge them for TOTALLY FUCKING BLOWING. There are a ton of indie artists that suck just as there are a ton of indie musicians that suck. I just feel the need to hold the art that I enjoy up to a certain standard, that standard being "does not suck."

Uh, I'll delve into "SO BITE ME!" territory pretty soon, so I should probably stop typing now. Seriously though, I'm entitled to my embarrassment and guilt. I go to a Catholic school.

Some of these really aren't that bad. I loved Coldplay's first 2 albums, although the last 2 have only been ok.

Not ashamed of my Justin Timberlake love either. The guy can sing.

My shameful admission: Miley Cyrus' The Climb. I'm glad I'm not the first to mention it. When I first heard it at work, I thought it was Jesse McCartney or some other little pop brat, and my co-worker muttered what trash it was (I agreed) and turned it off. But something about it was strangely ...hypnotic. And when it came on again after she left, I couldn't bring myself to turn it off and even hummed along with it.

Also:
Lady Gaga - Poker Face
Avril Lavigne - I'm with You, Things I'll Never Say
Fergie - Clumsy
Ed Bruce - Mama's, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be Cowboys
Merle Haggard - Always Wanting You

Rod Stewart 'Infatuation'

And another one about being in love with his boss's wife, or something like that. "She was destined to be mine"

Posted by: slip at May 28, 2009 12:44 PM

Nickelback, Coldplay and Jason Mraz? Please.

See You Again - Miley Cyrus
Elevator - Flo Rida
Damaged - Danity Kane

...Ouch

"Since You've Been Gone" - Kelly Clarkson

I'll even get into high falsetto voice to hit all the notes!

Posted by: Warren J at May 28, 2009 2:05 PM

Ricky Martin, Shake Your Bon Bon. It's my power workout song. And I'm starting to realize that my continued love for all songs Erasure is probably starting to count toward this.

Posted by: katy at May 28, 2009 2:08 PM

No way, katy. "Victim of Love" alone puts them high on my favorites list and the video for their cover of Abba's "Take a Chance on Me" is priceless.
Be proud of your Erasure love. OWN it, I say!

JESUS TAKE THE WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL

Posted by: Ilolled at May 28, 2009 6:56 PM

We Built This City by Starship. I just can't help it. Every time Marconi starts playing his mamba I wanna get knee-deep in the hoopla and sing along.

Posted by: funtime42 at May 28, 2009 7:10 PM

I don't have many guilty pleasures. I definitely have pleasures other people might feel guilty about, but for the most part I know why I like them and it cancels out any shame. The fact that I still get goosebumps when I hear Savage Garden's "I Want You", however, makes me feel icky.

Posted by: Lisa at May 28, 2009 7:45 PM

Christina Aguilera - Come on Over (when I took my car out for my first solo drive after getting my license, this was playing on the radio. I opened the windows and cranked it up, and since then it has always represented "freedom" in my mind.)
Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend
Katy Perry - Hot and Cold

But the most embarrassing is a song no one's ever heard of, "Candy in the Sun" by Swirl360. It has THE DUMBEST LYRICS ever written. But you know what? When I hear it, shit, I want to run outside in the sun and spin around with my arms out like a helicopter.

And I am not at ALL ashamed to say that I HAVE SEEN JOURNEY IN CONCERT. This is actually a source of pride for me. And I would see Third Eye Blind given the chance.

Posted by: Pistachio at May 28, 2009 9:20 PM

I was really enjoying this thread for a while there...I'll pretend that all the back and forth didn't happen and say that I like SO MANY shameful bands like Linkin Park that I will HIDE my iPod touch screen with my HAND on the bus sometimes. Yes. It's that bad. And I haven't even put any country on there yet. (Too everyone who called out "Friends in Low Places" -- hell. yes.)

Posted by: Jackie Joy at May 31, 2009 7:53 PM

okay is neil diamond hip again? ok, Don't answer that please!...still, i love me some 'America' and 'solitary man'

simon and garfunkel, the bangles eternal flame, ABBA, the sound of music soundtrack, and that 'I kissed a girl' song from that zoey deschanel look-alike whore chick, ooh and also 'Why Cant I' from liz phair and 'complicated' by avril lavigne, and 'closer to fine' from the indigo girls

just typing that was scary..honestly folks, I am a straight, 34 yr old man..

I'm ashamed to say it, but "Bring Me To Life" by Evanescence. Oh, I could cry.
