I'm a fan of mixing my raisinettes with my popcorn. mmmh tasty salty popcorn and deeeelicious sweet, chocolatey goodness all in one handful.

I also always sneak my own water bottle into movies cause that whole $5 for H2O is a rip off.

I sit on my box of milkduds for a few minutes, not enough to compress them, but just enough to make them soft. Then, I grab a few pieces of popcorn with butter and salt and mash em together. Large diet coke, extra ice to wash this down.

I like manny's idea with the sour patch kids. Something about stabbing my straw through the chest cavity of slowly dissolving children at the bottom of a tub of weak acid seems...comforting.

I'm a huge fan of Milk Duds and Cherry Coke. Cherry Coke tastes like childhood (and I know this because I subsist on the happiness of children), and Milk Duds tend to keep me from talking during the movie. Though I do manage to make the snarky comment from time to time, I swear in my past life I was Tom Servo.

If I'm feeling saucy, Sno Caps are the voluptuous candy of choice. They're so good I could shove them down my pants.

On the rare occasions that I go to the movies, I like just a Coke and nothing else. I've already made my opinions about popcorn clear. I actually would like to institute a food ban in theaters, because I am a big ole' crankypants who doesn't like to hear people eating/spilling their drinks.

Which is all part of why I don't go to the movies anymore. That and the whole "despising the rest of the human race" thing.

At home I eat whatever the fuck I want to.

Movie recipes, you say?

At home, simple: nicotene and booze. Or the previous night's chinese food and booze. Cheap-ass, greasy pizza and booze is also dynamite. A kick-ass grilled burger with booze is pretty good as well. Oh, and can't forget booze mixed with booze. Yum-O!

At the theater, I'm pretty simple: Nibs/Twizzlers with a giant iced tea; Sour Patch Kids with lemonade; or Milk Duds with super buttery/salty popcorn. I used to take my own popcorn to be cheaper, but there's just something about that slippery goodness of theater corn. Can't do beer - I've got the bladder of a fetus.

Nod to the Sour Patch Kids - has anyone ever eaten so many it actually hurts to try and brush your teeth? Sweet Christ, that's painsville...

i like the kid's meal--you get a smallish soda, mini popcorn, and usually m & m's or reese's pieces. then, you mix the candy with the popcorn, and it's delicious. plus it's usually cheap. but not as cheap as sneaking in an empanada in my purse.

Generally, I like popcorn with butter and a cherry coke.

Wash down with a Jack&Coke Slushee! It's not even that good, but I get tricked every time. Every time, I'm like, bourbon Slushee! Yes! but there's really not enough Jack in there. I've learned to bring my flask.

I also should have mentioned that frequently some sort of Nip goes in my Coca Cola at the movie theater.

M&Ms. Always. Sometimes I'll eat a couple handfuls of someone else's popcorn before remembering that I don't like popcorn, and sometimes I'll pay $4 for glorified sugar water, but I NEED my M&Ms.

Although I'm thinking about mixing skittles and pepsi together now, since last summer I got this "tropical mix" pepsi that tasted like they melted skittles into. I considered this a good thing, other people disagreed with me.

TK, I thought you meant Nip as in the candy and thought "Wow, what a delightful weirdo."

At home I prefer take-out Thai food and either red wine or Sea Dog Blueberry Wheat Ale.

Heh, it's funny how many comments are about mixing candy with popcorn. Most of my friends think I'm weird when I do this.

Amanda47 as I was reading about other people getting Slushees/Icees at the movies, it made me wish that the theatres near me had Slurpees--cola ones--as I would love one of those during a movie. Mmm, cola Slurpee.

I feel so unoriginal! I tend to try to tailor my candy selection to the movie (ie, Twizzlers for teen movies, Junior Mints for Comedies, Milk Duds for movies that my friends want to see but I really don't). I may be changing my ways after this Diversion, though. You Pajibans are brilliant.

I rarely eat at movies but when the mood strikes- extra butter and salt on my large popcorn (go big or go home, I always say) and peanut M&Ms. I balance it out with a snuck in water bottle (no more alcoholic brew for this Pajibaholic).

I used to work at a well known movie theater and I can assure you the $$ the theater pays for candy inventory is highway robbery. Don't feel bad to sneak in your own food...I do it all the time!!

I haven't been to a theater in ages; but when I used to go the place we went (AMC Grand, and yes, it actually is) had a pump-your-own station for the popcorn. I abused that thing like I was three years old, drowning my popcorn in ersatz butter-flavored grease. I am aware that the moviehouse butter topping contains no butter; actually, I suspect that it contains no natural ingredients whatsoever. It has a petrochemical undertone...mmmmmmm...

And I'm not superstitious, but I luuuuuv washing that uber-lubricated popcorn down with a Cherry Icee™. I have to nurse it, though, and make it last, or else I have to run to the ladies' in the middle of the movie.

Now I'm completely fascinated by the whole mixing Milk Duds with popcorn concept...why haven't I tried this before?! When I finally see Iron Man I'm totally eating that.

I try not to eat or drink too much, unless I want to miss half the movie while I'm peeing my brains out in the ladies' room. When I'm feeling brave, I like popcorn (NO extra butter), Junior Mints, or Reese's Pieces.

TK & socalled - a coworker told me yesterday she hates both Reese's Pieces AND Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. I think she's mentally ill.

First time commenting, but as a food whore I could not pass this up.

My current favorite is sneaking in pork belly sandwiches from a neighborhood restaurant.

But my go-to is the salty sweet combo that seems popular here: peanut M&Ms and buttered, salted popcorn mixed together. Yum.

Erin, Trader Joes empanadas are the fucking balls. Good choice.

I'm in the Milk Duds dumped in the bag of popcorn camp. Indie theaters often have real butter, and that makes it even better.

I'm a cheapster like others here, smuggling in food. in fact, I often change pocketbooks so that I can get a bottle of water plus a snack into the theater.

That being said, the kids "meals" are great for my kids - just enough popcorn to share with me, and enough candy to keep them away from the $10 humongo sizes sold at the snack bar.

Reminds me of this one: Take wedges of apple, add small slice of cheddar and a sprinkling of cinnamon and sugar, wrap in buscuit dough, bake 'til golden. Kind of like a dessert pig-in-a-blanket.

I grew up in Ohio, with a movie theater that cost $3.50 for tickets (it has since gone up to 6 dollars). Now I live in New York City were the tickets are 11 dollars. The price has forced me to resort to what I like to call Triple Features--I'll buy a ticket for one movie and then sneak into two more. It takes careful planning, figuring out which movies to see at what time. It also changes snack habits.

For the first movie I stick to popcorn and soda, classic combo that helps set the mood for the rest of the adventure.

However the second movie changes things up. Movie theater popcorn gives me a headache if I consume more than one bucket (too much salt/fake butter). Also, you need to keep in mind the duration of a Triple Feature day, it's generally 6-7 hours stuck in a movie theater, one should be prepared. For the second show I'll sneak in a salad and/or sandwich, a bag of baby carrots, a bottle of water and/or some Vitamin Water. Sneaking in food is essential so that the snack people don't recognize you, also the whole point of a triple feature is to save money.

Third movie is generally when you start to drag and forget what sunshine looks like. For the last movie energy boost I usually go with sugar--sour patch kids, sweet tarts and Advil (they're coated with candy!). I usually just refill my water bottle, but if the theater has it, I might get a cup of coffee.

It ends up being a long day, and a complicated process (wear layers so you can change up your appearance so ushers won't immediately recognize you) but in the end, you save 20 dollars which is consequently blown at a bar getting the alcohol you need to recover from being a movie theater all day.

Ah, sorry for the 10 bagillion typos in that last comment. I'm ashamed.

Oh, one other thing: I have a friend who loves jujifruit and must, MUST eat it with every movie even if it means smuggling it in or traveling to fifty gas stations and drug stores to find some. I've pointed out that Dots are sort of like Jugifruit/Jujifruit/however you spell it, and are always available, but he'll have none of it. Jujifruit or die.

If it is Halloween time and I have access to the them, then I like to mix candy corn with salty peanuts. Yum. Any other time, it's Junior Mints all the way. At home, it's whatever the fuck I wanna eat while I'm watchin' a movie.

Gotta have gummi bears. If I do not have fruit flavored gummi something, I cannot watch a movie.

As a child: Nachos, hot dog(moviehouse hot dogs are the shit), Coke or Rootbeer, rasinettes and gummi bears.

As an adult: Gummi bears and water.

I forgot about nachos. I love them so much I want to marry them, but I try to stay away whenever I can conjure up a shred of self-control. Because a tub of popcorn + a tray of nachos = more than any 5'3 girl should consume in one sitting.

So, anyway, if I break down and get nachos, I let about 4-5 chips sit in the cheese for a good minute or so until they get all soggy and floppy and cheese-saturated. Then, I eat those chips and dunk 4-5 new ones and let the cheese absorption process begin anew. Mmmm...soggy nachos. Anybody else do that?

I have this weird thing for movie theater nachos. Just like you don't do "steak" jerky when you're in the mood for steak, one eats movie theater nachos only when one is in the very specific mood for stale (but warm) tortilla chips and melted corn-syrup solids, as opposed to actual cheese and decent toppings.

And you're in a movie theater. It doesn't work anywhere else.

Peanut M&M + Popcorn or Sour Patch Kids or Swedish Fish...

A small popcorn w/ butter & the sprinkle on fake cheese, a Sprite and a box of Whoppers. It's not really a movie experience without Whoppers.

Kolby, please pay attention this time: Popcorn, while tolerable in taste, is evil. It is evil because it gets jammed between your teeth, feeling like someone is sticking wet fingernails in your mouth. Even worse is when it gets stuck to the back of your tongue. Finally, in movie theaters it is particularly unacceptable, what with the chewing and chomping and crunching and rattling of the paper bag and spilling and JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP.

Movie theaters should only serve quiet foods. Like cotton candy. Or nothing. Nothing would be preferable.

Actually, I wouldn't mind if theaters served whatever they want... if they banned people*. Then it would be paradise.

I can't believe how many people put m&ms in their popcorn. People think I'm a nut when I do this.
Ideally, I use microwave popcorn at home (I'm generally afraid of the movie theater kind but give in if I haven't planned ahead) and add peanut m&ms while the popcorn is still hot (another problem with movie theater popcorn - half the time it is stale and rarely hot). This softens the chocolate inside but those magical m&ms do not melt in your hand! I will put this in a ziplock bag and sneak it into the theater in my purse or enjoy it on my couch. The new dark chocolate peanut m&ms make it even tastier. There is something about the combo of chocolate and salt and the crunch of the peanut that makes it the perfect snack.

Circus peanuts (slightly stale) and grape gator-aid. Junior mints. Almond m&m's. I remember going to see the first Batman as a teen, sneaking in the theater with a large pizza and bottles of diet coke in my purse. good times.

TK - it's the texture, not the taste! It's all coming back to me now. And it's just as painful. You poor thing. I do love me some cotton candy, though.

We should do a comment diversion on favorite sports-watchin' foods. Mine would have to be, in no particular order: Hot dogs with kraut & mustard, roasted peanuts and cotton candy. Preferably served in a baseball stadium.

Standard: popcorn and a Coke (or sometimes just water)
When I'm feeling adventurous: Sour Patch Kids + Swedish Fish + Coke
On crazy days, a burger and fries and, you guessed it, a Coke.

Though sometimes, recently, it's root beer.

tt_marie I don't object to a cheese-soaked nacho, but I don't do it intentionally. This reminds me of my (supposedly weird) preference for soft McDonald's fries. I swear you used to get more of these mixed in with the crispy ones when I was a kid; now if I get just one soft fry in a batch, I feel lucky.

Can't stand? Crinkly and rattling shit. Please make sure all of bags/boxes are opened fully by the time the last preview rolls. Listening to the twat in front of me struggle for a good twenty seconds to remove a fuzed Twizzler from the pouch is an immediate "accidental" knee to the back of the skull. That goes for popcorn too - have them fill the bag quarter-to-halfway so you can season as desired, then top the bag/bucket off and repeat. No one needs to hear you shaking your popcorn every other bite. That equals an elbow in your crotch when I have an "accidental" stumble on my way to the can.

Salty and sweet = stoner treat. Warm, salty, buttery popcorn mixed with milk duds has to be the best stoner and/or movie food ever. (*sigh* I kinda miss smoking dope.)

At home: buttery, salty, air-popped popcorn and milk. You fill your mouth with popcorn (don't chew or swallow), then take a swig of milk. The popcorn melts in the milk.
It tastes kind of weird. And it's a soggy mess. But somehow the cool factor from when I was a kid just doesn't quit. I've tried it with Pepsi, and it's a bubbly, fizzy mess. A Pepsi-up-the-nose kind of mess.
Also, can someone clue me into what the hell an Icee is? Never heard of it.

I don't eat or drink anything. I just watch the movie. I dislike popcorn, nachos are too noisy, chocolate melts and beverages make you miss the movie. But if I did chose something, it would be Sour Patch Kids or other sour candies.

Julie, if you I didn't enjoy your posts so much I would totally hate you right now. I haven't been able to make it up to Philly in a long time so I have to be content with memories of meals past. Everything I have ever eaten there has been fabulous EXCEPT the desserts--they are only so-so. That is the only weak spot on their otherwise outstanding menu. When tomatoes are in season, I totally recommend the tomato cucumber salad with big gobs of fresh mozarella. Oh, and the complimentary marinated cucumbers? Gaaaaaahhhhhhh Yeah, now I have totally gone off in left field. Sorry. *halfheartedly wipes drool from chin*

Both. I don't think it has to be Dr. Pepper, but there's definite peanuts-in-soda action that I've heard of.

Popcorn is all I need, though if I'm feeling really extravagant I'll start things off with those undersized theater bags of Twizzlers. But yeah, big salty oily popcorn. Why trifle with that other crap?

the kid's pack is awesome - it's a smaller portion of the popcorn with a drink and some candy for about five bucks. i like it because it's a sort of realistic portion of food, and i hate feeling, well, gluttony at the movie theater.

oh and homemade chex mix - straight from the oven into a bag concealed underneath your parka - with some sort of candy from the theater is the BEST movie snack. ever.

Take one Chips Ahoy, spread it with peanut butter, add another on top, pop it in a ziplock. Repeat as necessary until full, then take to the movie of your choice. At home, the same thing only with a side of milk so cold my teeth rattle. Also very good dipped in a milk shake...

My sisters and I only go to theatres near a Target, Rite Aid, or something similar. Archer Farms specialty chocolates, iced tea, nerdssourpatchkidspringleszours and probably shrimp wraps from a shawarma place. We carry big purses. Then we feverishly try to cram all the stuff in our overlarge purses. Doing this outside a theatre one day, we saw a guy breeze past us and stroll on in with a large fragrant pizza box proudly hoisted in the air. Awesome.

If buying at a theatre? Butter soup in a bag, liberally sprinkled with popcorn and a splash of BUTTER!

I HAAAATE when people scrunch/rumple their chips/candy packets in cinemas. It makes my insides churn with insane anger.

I am very stingy, so always take my own snacks. If I'm feeling healthy (which is rare), then it will be a cut-up apple, craisins, almonds and sliced cucumber. Otherwise, I love going to pick-and-choose self-service style lolly stores and filling an enormous bag with random candies. Then, as you eat them in the cinema, it's this fun game of discovery as you eat, cos you don't know what's coming next.

Once, I stupidly tried to take sushi into the cinema, and tried to drip soy sauce on the end of the sushi-roll, only to completely miss, squirt myself, and then had to sit there stinking of soy for the entirety of the movie. (I was in highschool, and it was my second viewing of 'Ever After', and I loved it so much. So so much.)

i'm a little late on this one...i was watching iron man for the second time. i was stuck in the front row the first time around...ugh.

anyway, i never EVER drink at the movies. i hate missing any part of the movie-going experience, so i actually don't drink at least an hour before the movie (i know i'm weird). if you go to a movie with my super anal retentive self, you must be prepared to be there at least 30 minutes early (i prefer 40, but will relent so i don't look like a neurotic fool--all i can say is "i told you so" to the morons i went with on saturday).

the food i usually sneak into the theater are sno-caps or raisinettes, but i have brought andy capp's hot fries before...love those things.

Landmark apparently uses real butter on their popcorn, which therefore tastes a little alien at first, but they have very fluffy corn.

I just don't have anything in the movies. Popcorn is the main cause for popcorn breath, with greasy fingers and cluttered teeth included. I'm also not a fan of watered down soda and candy bars that will make me have watered down soda.

When I'm at home, I'll just have whatever is in the fridge that will make up for fast, light food. Usually, it's a whole pack of cookies.

I'd just like to know why my suggestion for the ACD was never accepted... I've sent an email about six months ago. Maybe it was already done and I don't know...

Well at least I have faith the Pajibians are clean snackers. I go to my local movie theater once a week (or more during the holiday blitzes) and my love for it is like that towards a family member. Yes, I'm a loser. But that's why it personally offends me when every single snack-wielding person arounds me leaves their trash behind at the end of the film. I always hear the exact moment they tire of holding it and the containers hit the floor, spilling their last remnants of popcorn, candy, and soda to stain the floor. My theater's only two years old, but most of its rooms always suffer from that petshop-like odor. Maybe I just live in an area filled with particularly lazy slobs? Lucky me!

On a happier note...props for the WaWa love in this thread. Best convenience store ever. Always so clean, always so fresh. I will miss them terribly when I move out of Jersey.

At the cinema i like salted popcorn, i'll have a fruit juice or occasionally coke. Sometimes i'll have a small tub of mostly chocolate icecream or a pick and mix of sweets...mmmm...

If it's cold i love to have coffee and occasionally tea.

For Iron Man I brought homemade chocolate chip scones with me. My husband likes to sneak in a bottle (yeah a whole one) of wine.

At home I like to make popcorn and sprinkle it with Mirin and sugar. Yum.

I'm with all y'all up for a little nicotine n booze, when at home. Why bother with food when there are plenty of chemicals to make your viewing pleasure, well, much more pleasurable? I especially enjoy this when I watch movies that I know are stupid but are alot of fun to bitch about (much of the hangover theater films would apply to this).

If at the movies though, I like to bring a bag of plain popcorn sprinkled with indian spices. i can't justify paying almost as much as my ticket for a fucking soda that's flat anyway because the dimwits didn't change the containers (this happens alot in NYC).

but if it's a revival or a special event film, al and i will sneak in a bottle of kettle 1 and buy a sprite to mix with it. there's a great revival every thursday in chelsea in which you can see some great classic films, both campy and legitimate classics, hosted by a drag queen who's actually funny. by the time the movie starts, we're trashed. it's, um, fun...

i'm all for sneaking stuff into the theater, but sometimes, if you aren't the sneaker, and merely happen to glance over at the time when said stuff is being revealed, you can see some pretty hilarious eatin'. for instance, during the previews for dreamgirls, the woman next to me had already consumed her theater-bought nachos and large pop. before the movie starts, she whips a hot dog OUT OF HER PURSE and proceeds to devour it. who carries a hot dog in her purse? it made me laugh for about five minutes.

I worked at a theatre in highschool, and discovered the delicious combination of coke and orange soda. Don't knock it till you try it. Also, you can't beat Gummy Bears for a sweet treat. I typically dissect each Bear - head first, then the arms, then legs, and lastly the torso - it makes the bag last longer.

I'd stay away from the nachos and cheese/hot dogs at the concession unless you're there for the matinee - those things sit on the warmer ALL DAY until they're shrivelled and dry and the cheese has skin on it... BARF.

I love seeing all the chocolate mixed with popcorn comments. I introduced my girlfriend to that when we started dating and that's why she thinks I'm brilliant. At regular theaters, we get a HUGE layered butter popcorn (my girl can eat it all herself, no lie) and a giant Coke to split. Some chocolate to eat with the popcorn, maybe some Twizzlers for me.

But now that we're in Austin, we've gotten all spoiled by going to the Alamo, which has a full menu. So it's still a large popcorn with real butter, but now she also gets mozzarella sticks, maybe some chips and queso. I share the popcorn and usually get a pizza or this completely wicked green chile mac and cheese. And sometimes a chocolate Coke float. We never make it out of there cheap, but at least the tickets are under $7. And we can have dinner there, so it's not always crappy snack food. Spoiled, I tell ya!! I don't want to leave Austin just because of this.

At the movies, water (I bring my own) and maybe some icecream - delicious AND quiet. I'm with TK about not wanting to hear the noise of other people eating. At least I won't add to it!

At home, booze of whatever stripe I fancy, and chocolate. And nuts - I love Marks & Spencer's honey-roasted cashews. Tasty, but not so crunchy that I drown out the film for myself.

Last time I went to the movies, the friend I was with brought in her own snacks. To this day, she doesn't get why I thought garlicky hummus and raw sugar-snap peas was not entirely suitable for a cinema. Clue: people moved away from us!

Just wanted to add that (except for the coffee) i always bring my own food...i refuse to pay the high prices that cinema chains charge...:(

I would totally love to have a meet and greet with you guys. Sadly, travel is out of my budget as I am closing on my (first ever) house next week. I have not had this much fun on-line since I played Legend back in the late 90s.

I am late to the party here, but back in high school my friends and I were partial to going to the local drive-in theatre (Our drive-in is still going strong and is almost ready to open for the season). On holiday weekends they always have a dusk till dawn special. As soon as the sun went down they start showing movies and keep going until the sun comes up. It was great. And cheap, since they charged by the car load instead of per person. Anyways, we'd always make a trip to the local bulk food store to buy a wide variety of cheap junk food, stop off for some fast food, and then we'd pick up some booze. We'd smuggle it in, along with a bunch of blankets and pillows (all the better for smuggling contraband junk food under), only have to pay 2 or 3 dollars apiece to sit there and watch an entire night of movies, and get good and drunk. In between movies though we'd always make trips to the concessions booth to buy fries and gravy or soggy nachos.
When watching at home, my perfect storm of movie junk food has always been either super salty/greasy regular potato chips (usually the super cheap store brand, as they're always saltier and greasier) with plain hershey's milk chocolate, or barbeque chips with milk. Not together, just a handful of barbeque chips, followed by a chaser of icy cold milk. To this day that's the only way I can eat barbeque chips. It's the same thing with cake...I always need milk with my cake.

my best friend and i snuck a jumbo sized bag of blue razzberry blow pops, 2 dr. peppers, 2 cactus coolers, and a grab bag of chocolate into REQUIEM FOR A DREAM.

everything but the dr. peppers (our personal heroin) and one blow pop remained uneaten.
