An Evening Comment Diversion / Dustin Rowles

Comment Diversions | June 29, 2009 | Comments (271)

This week, as part of our 5th Anniversary celebration (that’s a phrase you’re going to hear a lot this week), we’re bringing back some of our favorite comment diversions from over the last two and a half years. This is the 145th comment diversion, if you can believe that.

Our first diversion, in March 2007, was also one of our most popular — there were 465 comments on it. It was a random idea — we were having an incredibly slow day, I had no time to watch and review a movie, and I needed a quick and easy way to keep our readers entertained for the afternoon. So, I suggested that we play the iPod shuffle game, and the comment diversions were born. And out of those diversions, you folks have also come up with some pretty great Guides (which we’ll go cover tomorrow).

So, let’s do it again, folks. Five songs. Crack out your iPod, your iPhone, your iTunes, or whatever MP3 player you’re using, hit shuffle, and tell us what the first five songs are. And, as always, don’t cheat. It’s those embarrassing songs that make this fun; no one remembers the cool, hipster tunes.

Me first:

1. “Speak, See, Remember” — Pavement
2. “The Difficult Kind” — Sheryl Crow
3. “Mothers of the Disappeared” — U2
4. “A Star is Bored” — Paul Westerberg
5. “Dry Lightning” — Bruce Springsteen

You want complete honesty? Here's some complete honesty in your face:

1. Variation XI: Trumpets (Vivace) - Peter and the Wolf as read by David Bowie
2. Spaceball Ricochet by David J
3. Tony's Theme by the Pixies
4. Dead Man Walking (live in Utrecht 1997) by David Bowie
5. Keep Me From Harm by Peter Murphy

That's what I get for keeping the complete works of David Bowie and all projects related to Bauhaus on my mp3 player. I have like 4000 other songs not by any of those people, but that's what shows up.

I should have lied to look cool and thrown some Einsturzende Neubauten or Parliament in there. Oh well.

It’s those embarrassing songs that make this fun; no one remembers the cool, hipster tunes.

Embarassing, eh?

Yesterday, I was kidnapped by 10 year old girls, who forced me to listen to The Jonas Brothers song "Mandy." The girls worked for those Jo-Bro sons of bitches, who wanted to off me for all those times I insulted them. Fortunately, I managed to escape by chewing the ropes off with my incredible teeth, and distracted the girls with a bottle of fructose syrup that they chased while I ran away.

In the end, I had to confront those Jonas Brothers, and was forced to slay them by blasting the song "Give It Away" by The Red Hot Chili Peppers until they exploded by trying to control their sexual tension.

The embarrassing part, I had to sneak in to their fortress of death by dipping my hair in axl grease, and tricking the guards into thinking I was the fourth or fifth brother.

The things I do for you people.

but it was so good I had to listen as I read the rest:

Who Was Around?- Bob Mould
Goldfish & Clowns- Fish
Wild Horses- Rolling Stones
Mad Russian's Christmas- Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Thank You- Tori Amos

This could have been real bad. My shuffle went on the fritz, so I am using my 10 year old son's and it waited to song eight where it could of hit me with Daughtry. Of course Neil Diamond or Gordon Lightfoot could have jumped up, so I guess luck is on my side.

My iPod's out in the car and it's hot out there. I'll get it later.

My question is this: WHY is there a picture of Ashlee Simpson at the top of this thread? Are we meant to infer that even her assorted works aren't too embarrassing to be included in our five songs? Because I assure you: Yes. Yes they are. If you have Ashlee Simpson on your mp3 player, you should set fire to it immediately.

My brother gave me his old I Pod touch when he upgraded. I was in class today and listening to Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Pride and Joy". The guy next to me asked what I was listening to, I slid over the I Pod and he goes Abba? Apparently, there is some glitch because once it goes to the covers of the albums, 90% of my songs are listed under Abba. I have like 3 Abba songs. It was quite funny.

I was just playing it on my way to work and got tracks from Three Dog Night, House of Pain, Tori Amos, The Fugees, Mazzy Star, the Firefly soundtrack, and Creedance Clearwater Revival. I am often surprised by what comes up, I have plenty of stuff on there I've forgotten about....

I'm only doing this because of the 5th anniversary. I won't get on a high horse about it, either:

1. "When I'm By Your Side" from the musical Side Show
2. "Coffee Shop Nights" from the musical Curtains
3. "We're the Starmites" from the musical Starmites
4. "Marry Me, Terry" from the musical Side Show
5. "Red, Hot, and Blue - It's De-Lovely" from the fantastic album Nole & Cole - Let's Do It (The Songs of Noel Coward and Cole Porter)

As you can see, I have nothing but showtunes/showtune-related albums loaded to Rhapsody now (the next track was June Clyde singing "Anything Goes" - swoon). It would be more fun this weekend when I have to start loading everything Miley, Jonas Brothers, HSM, and Disney to appease the brats at camp.

Most of you would probably not like the first two at all: very harsh death industrial from ColdMeat Industry label in Sweden. For some reason though, this kind of "music" cheers me up on rainy days.
The third one is kind of like dark psychedelic & melancholic folk.
The last three should be familiar, or at least known of.

I wasn't able to do this before. This is a brand new iPod (my first one purchased), and this is the first time I've ever played it after uploading my entire music library.
