Films with the Greatest Rewatchability Factor

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Comment Diversions | Comments (176)

83waitresspic3.jpg

Seldom in this profession do I have the opportunity to rewatch films multiple times — the Netflix queue is too backed up or the DVR is too often giving me a guilt trip. I see maybe eight to ten films a year twice, but only the ones that are good enough in theaters to rewatch with Mrs. Pajiba-hyphenate once they arrive on DVD. But I don’t think I’ve rewatched a movie serially since I went on a tear and watched Bottle Rocket every day for something like two weeks. Most of the DVDs I own are still in their plastic wrap. Growing up, though, it was Stand by Me, which I’d watch on the days my sister wasn’t watching Dirty Dancing. And, of course, during the dating phase, there were 15 or 20 staples that I’d drag out each time I got involved with a new girlfriend. But now, I can’t remember the last film I saw three times. Waitress, I think.

So, I put that question to all of you. I’m not asking what are the best movies, but which movies do you rewatch the most? Which movies do you return to when you’re feeling sick or hungover or to pick yourself up or wipe away a bad day? What movies have the best rewatchability factor?

1. Back to the Future
2. Ghostbusters

I guess for me they're mostly comedies. An emotionally heavy movie is much harder to sit though multiple times.

Posted by: camytaru at March 24, 2011 5:03 PM

God, I must have seen PCU dozens of times back in the day (when they played it on comedy central like twice a week)

Posted by: phaedawg at March 24, 2011 5:06 PM

Billy Elliot
Little Miss Sunshine
Amelie

The holy trinity of go-to movies for picking me up, depending on whether I'm bummed about life in general, my family or love, respectively

Posted by: astounded at March 24, 2011 5:07 PM

Grosse Pointe Blank, Groundhog Day, Speed, Waitress, Outbreak, Die Hard, lots of other silly things that don't require a lot of deep thought.

Oooh! And several Coen flicks.

Posted by: kate the great at March 24, 2011 5:07 PM

The 13th Warrior. Don't you judge me.

Posted by: Stefannie at March 24, 2011 5:09 PM

Why, Groundhog Day, of course!

Also: North and South, Tortilla Soup (especially while I am cooking dinner and sipping wine), Mostly Martha, and any episode of The Vicar of Dibley. And Harry Potter 1, 3, 4, or 6, on rainy days only.

Comfort food for the soul.

Posted by: klingonfree at March 24, 2011 5:10 PM

There's a whole bunch but Predator probably tops the list for me.

Special mention goes to The Big Hit as well, but that's pretty much entirely down to Lou Diamond Phillips.

Posted by: Murderbot at March 24, 2011 5:11 PM

In no particular order,

Raising Arizona
Finding Nemo
The 13th Warrior*
*bite me, it's magnificently quotable
Kill Bill, Vol. 1
Silverado
Pride & Prejudice
[1995 BBC mini]

Posted by: Salieri2 at March 24, 2011 5:14 PM

Don't you ever apologize for loving the 13th Warrior.

Posted by: klingonfree at March 24, 2011 5:18 PM

@klingonfree- nice work. Wait, it felt like I said that already.

Ok my list:

Breakfast at Tiffanys
Billy Madison
BottleShock
(why do all of these start with "B"???)
and Caddyshack. (Save!)

Wet, Hot, American Summer
Little Miss Sunshine
Sixteen Candles
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Big Fish

Posted by: Dorothy Snarker at March 24, 2011 5:22 PM

The Dollar Trilogy
Taxi Driver
Swingers
Dangerous Liaisons

Posted by: KV at March 24, 2011 5:22 PM

The original Star Wars trilogy
The Godfather

Obviously, right? They also happen to be my favorite movies, but I do find them to be endlessly rewatchable.

A couple of my other stock favorites: Big Trouble In Little China and Aliens.

The one that I just sort of discovered recently, though: The Fantastic Mr. Fox. It's not that I just watched it for the first time recently or that I didn't realize I really loved it on first viewing. It was just a few nights watching it yet again that I realized that it does fit the rewatchable question as few others do. I also realized that it has vaunted into my number one slot for the films of 2009, and - although it was difficult to imagine this ever happening - it has become my favorite Wes Anderson film surpassing The Royal Tenenbaums.

The big ones of my youth outside of Star Wars were Flash Gordon and the original Clash Of The Titans. I don't think they are quite as rewatchable now, but as an adult I find it hard to justify rewatching too many things regardless with all new content out there.

Galaxy Quest, The Shawshank Redemption (I swear, every time it's on TNT), The Sound of Music, and Hot Fuzz.

I have a bad habit of putting certain movies on when I'm hanging out with friends so that we can either watch it, or have a conversation. Some of these movies are for chatting and others aren't.

Stranger than Fiction --Even if I'm only half watching it, I make everyone shut up during the golem part.
Amelie -- mainly because it's the only French movie I own, and for various reasons, I just want to hear beautiful French being spoken (I regularly get cursed out in the street in French)
Almost Famous
Penelope
Rushmore
The Apartment
Empire Records

Good Will Hunting.

I swear, I can get to the end of that movie and as soon as it returns to the DVD menu I'm ready to just hit "play" again.

Same is true of "Once". (ironically?)

Posted by: bachelor at March 24, 2011 5:50 PM

I own only five movies on DVD (and three of those were unwanted gifts), but one of them is Bright Star and I must have already watched it about 11 times.

The Princess Bride
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Halloween
Seven
Robin Hood (Disney)
Office Space
Beauty and the Beast
What About Bob?
Casablanca
No Country for Old Men

And a number of Christmas movies that are eminently rewatchable like It's a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Elf.

If we're talking TV, I can watch Arrested Development and Deadwood over and over and I'll usually turn on The Wonder Years whenever I see it listed.

Posted by: becks at March 24, 2011 7:00 PM

When I was in junior high I'd watch Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison and Tommy Boy a lot. Dumb and Dumber too. Those are movies to watch with a big, dumb group of your 14 year old peers.

Posted by: becks at March 24, 2011 7:03 PM

OH! Who mentioned Jane Austen Book Club? Show yourself!

Horrible awful ickyicky book, but a surprisingly lovely albeit lightweight movie. Re-watchable for SURE.

Also, who mentione Always Sunny reruns? Whoever you are... you're wonderful.

Posted by: klingonfree at March 24, 2011 7:05 PM

Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz to cheer me up.

Pride and Prejudice (Colin Firth version, the only version for me), Phantom of the Opera (Gerard Butler, before he morphed into Russell Crowe), Jane Eyre (Toby Stephens Masterpiece Theater version, although I will probably watch the Fassbender on endless repeat for a while when it comes out!) when I am sick/bummed/mad at the hubby.

Lately, Inception. "Couldn't someone dream up a goddamn beach?!"

Posted by: Drea at March 24, 2011 7:06 PM

Tron, Session 9, and Silent Hill.

One of these things is not like the others...

Posted by: sistercoyote at March 24, 2011 7:13 PM

Serenity. Not sure what it is, but I never get tired of it. And I don't generally re-watch movies. I love Star Wars eps 4 and 5, but I think I've already watched Serenity straight through more than either of those.

Posted by: just me at March 24, 2011 7:35 PM

You're so right about Stand By Me. I must have watched that thirty or forty times between the ages of 10 and 14.

I think the films I most rewatch are The Big Lebowski and Singing In The Rain and Annie Hall. Also Nanni Moretti films, but that's because I wrote my dissertation on them.

-Anything by the trinity of Wright-Pegg-Frost
-80's action blockbusters in general
-Matrix 1

Basically movies that either undemanding fun rides or the equivalent of having friends around for a drink and laugh when there are no actual friends available for a drink and a laugh.

On the flipside, the list of movies and shows I once loved that cannot rewatch is growing. Off the top of my head:
-LOTR
-Inception. Loved it first time, bored by the second run.
-with notable exceptions, late RTD era Dr Who where every second episode was DALEKS! CYBERMEN!! SPLODEY UNIVERSES! coupled with a barely coherent script. It was easy enough to just go along for the ride first time around, but when the fun wears off the deficiencies are pretty glaring.

I can't believe only one person said Dazed and Confused. I've probably seen that more than any movie with the possible exception of The Goonies. The first Pirates of the Caribbean goes down pretty well for multiple views.

There are a few that I'll watch over for the soundtrack as well, like Black Snake Moan.

Not looking at anyone else's yet:

Stardust
Beetlejuice

"Monty Python and the Holy Grail"

Posted by: , at March 25, 2011 1:43 AM

Deep Blue Sea
Aliens
The Matrix
Pulp Fiction
Sean of the Dead
Jurassic Park
And Star Wars is probably my most watched trilogy, it's not uncommon for me to watch all three movies over three evenings, probably every 6 months or so.

Posted by: Chugga at March 25, 2011 1:57 AM

Clue
LOTR (Extended Versions mostly, and I usually try to marathon them if I can)
The Harry Potters
The Kevin Smith films up to Dogma (after that I have to be in the mood)
The 13th Warrior
Any of Star Wars (mostly the real trilogy)
Indiana Jones
Princess Bride (Hell I almost make buying a new version its own routine)
Shawshank
The Usual Suspects
And Goddammit I loves me some Hellboy, Starz has been showing it damn near every day at some point and if I find nothing better I'll watch it wherever it is and start the quoting.

Firefly (along with Serenity)
Doctor Who
Batman the Animated Series

When I was in college my roommate introduced me to Eddie Murphy Raw and in the three years we lived together or within walking distance we must have seen it more than anything else I've ever watched religiously. When new people joined our group it was a rite of passage. It played in the background if it wasn't the focus. I haven't seen it in almost ten years and I could probably do the whole routine.

Posted by: protoformX at March 25, 2011 2:07 AM

Movies that trap me on TV:
Shawshank
The Godfathers (except 3)
Gandhi
Princess Bride
Classic Mel Brooks (Blazing Saddles, History of the World, Young Frankenstein, Space Balls, To Be or Not to Be, High Anxiety)
Stir Crazy
Trading Places
48 hours
Spies Like Us
The Blues Brothers
The Jerk

Movies that I watched multiple times in the theater as a kid (back when movies would advertise how long they had been in theaters - 16 weeks and running). The mostly still fit the bill described above.
Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back
Savannah Smiles
If You Could See What I Hear (I love the Beastmaster, but this is Marc Singers best work)
The Toy
Poltergeist
Raiders of the Lost Arc
Stripes
Meatballs
Caddyshack
Smokey and the Bandit
Mr. Mom

Any time I notice them on TV:

I don't rewatch movies as much as I'd like or used to. There is simply too many new ones I still haven't watched, and I simply don't have the time I had before.
I think in the last year I only rewatched one film. It was Bitch Slap, and I watched it twice in two consecutive days, sort of like pinching myself, because I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed it the first time.

I've watched most of the previously mentioned films multiple times in the past, some more than others, but the movie that takes the crown is probably It's a Wonderful Life. Ever since I got it on dvd, I watch it at around Christmas time, even though I don't consider it necessarily a Christmas movie.

The movie rewatched most times in a movie theater (three times), it's a tie between The Matrix and Cannonball Run, the last one having the particularity of being watched over a period of years. To this day, I can watch that opening credits sequence with the black lamborghini over and over.

As a side note, the comedy (a genre with possibly the worst replayability factor) with the best replayability for me, has to be Dr. Strangelove. I find it as funny today as the first time I watched it.

Point Break- Keanu never looked better and I love the ocean

The Bournes- all three, who doesn't love Jason Bourne?

The Money Pit- "two weeks"

Clueless- "as if"

The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring
Cinematography is breathtaking, the other two are just filled with orc battles

Dazed & Confused- which morphed into That 70's Show which I've seen every ep 1,000 times
(except S 8) Everything was more fun in the 70's.

Pride & Prejudice Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy
Bridget Jones Diary (1 only) Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy

I watch The Fifth Element and Star Wars every time they are on. Which is a lot since that seems to be the only movies that Spike and FX want to play.

Also, when I was younger, I went through a Princess Bride phase where I watched it everyday. I figured it fit perfectly with Fred Savage asking Columbo to come back and read it again tomorrow.

Posted by: Ian McEwan at March 25, 2011 1:43 PM

There's a lot for me - I'm a re-watcher and a re-reader. But the ones that I turn to most are teen and/or romantic comedies, but there's a lot. The short list (yes, this is the short one):

Singin' In The Rain
Beauty & the Beast (Disney version!)
Mean Girls
10 Thing I Hate About You
Clueless
Bend It Like Beckham
Robin Hood: Men In Tights
The Princess Bride (I like old school Cary Elwes)
Labyrinth
Knocked Up/40 Year Old Virgin (completely interchangeable, when I'm in the mood for one - I usually go for whichever I've seen less recently.)

But really, any stupid comedy, any of what qualify as good romantic comedies (When Harry Met Sally and the Birdcage both get a lot of play too,) and musicals (I watch the Producers a lot...I like Nathan Lane.) Action movies, good and bad, make it mostly onto my "re-watch while drinking heavily" list, rather than my "re-watch when I'm sick/sad/hungover/having a quiet afternoon to myself" list.

And looking back on this...I think I need to start watching more new movies. I re-watch a LOT.

The Bourne trilogy
The 40 Year Old Virgin
In Bruges

I've seen Fight Club about 20 times. Ditto, and even most likely.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Back to The Future (1,2,3): lost count. My brother and I used to act some parts of those.

Breakfast Club, Pulp Fiction, Wayne's World, Shawshank, Life of Brian, Walk Hard, Mystery Men, Snatch, Leaving Las Vegas: 5-10 times each.

And the list of "have to rewatch" has now so many titles, I wouldn't know them all. I'd start with Eternal Sunshine, Lock Stock, The Dark Knight, Spinal Tap, Donnie Darko, Lost in Translation, Goonies... so on...

Gross Pointe Blank
Notting Hill
High Fidelity
Transporter - the first half and the last 10 minutes
Office Space
and, god help me, Constantine

This may be my favorite movie discussion among friends, because then you have to ask "Are those your favorite movies?" and "Do you think these are the BEST movies?" And the answer is usually "no." Then why do you watch them so much and why don't you want to watch better/favorite movies as much. Or are you just a big liar and you really do think "Red Dawn" is the best movie ever and you just don't want to admit it.

(I will readily admit Gross Pointe Blank is in my top 5, and I can't think of the other four.)
