Do You Have a Life?

An Afternoon Comment Diversion / Dustin Rowles

Comment Diversions | December 23, 2008 | Comments (207)

Facebook is not only a great place to idle away your hours (when you’re not here, of course), but it’s a nice source of inspiration for our weekly comment diversions. I don’t know where this latest one originated, but several of the Eloquents are playing, so I thought I’d bring the joy to Pajiba today to give you something to do while you’re pretending to work ahead of the holiday (and, by the by, if you haven’t joined the Pajiba Facebook yet, it’s here — and several of us on staff are friend whores, so you can also poke away at us individually, and then poke your way through the Pajiba community of Eloquents, putting both faces and names to the commenter handles).

So, apparently, if you have watched 85 or more of the 239 movies listed below, you have no life. But I think, in the Pajiba world, it’s a badge of honor. I’ve seen 204 of them, but I hardly count, what with watching movies being my job. Here’s Nicole’s list (I hope she doesn’t mind): She’s seen 115, which is a nice number, I think — it shows you’re a lover of film, but that you also leave your house occasionally.

No need to copy/paste the entire list into each comment — a final tally, I think, would be sufficient.

I have never been more proud. Or more ashamed.

Posted by: grinder at December 23, 2008 3:42 PM

114.
How many of those have I memorized? Well, probably just The Princess Bride, but there are a few others that come close.

Posted by: Pea at December 23, 2008 3:44 PM

103.

Among them, Club Dread, all three Matrix movies and all six Goddamned Star Wars movies.

I suddenly feel all empty inside.

Posted by: greer at December 23, 2008 3:44 PM

I played yesterday-my total was also 166.

:eyes Clee Shay warily:

Posted by: Julie at December 23, 2008 3:44 PM

118.

How could anybody who even occasionally goes to movies not score above 85?

Now that that's out of the way, what in the screaming blue hell is Ewoks Caravan Of Courage?! Sounds religiousy...

Posted by: Skitz at December 23, 2008 3:47 PM

123...and not nearly as bad as I expected...that's an odd list.

Posted by: Smokin at December 23, 2008 3:48 PM

201. this put a lot of things in perspective for me...

Posted by: Colin at December 23, 2008 3:49 PM

Weeee! I still have some semblance of a life! Mind you it's not much, but it's mine!

Posted by: kelley at December 23, 2008 3:51 PM

137. I'm not sure how to feel about that yet. Some of these movies are on my all time favorites' list. Others pain me to admit having watched the whole mess. I'm convinced I have an incurable disease; I'm hoping someone can put a name on it for me. The affliction is this: once I sit down and start watching a movie I am unable to stop, short of the couch actually bursting into flames. And even then, after it was doused I'd find a different seat. I think I've only shut off 3 or 4 movies in my entire life, and one of those was Vampires: Los Muertos (with Bon Jovi). Anyone who's had that misfortune will instantly understand.

Posted by: Xtreme at December 23, 2008 3:51 PM

91. But I don't leave the house much, what the fuck am I doing?

On demand television show marathon perhaps? :::confusion:::

Posted by: soto at December 23, 2008 3:52 PM

102, including possibly the best sequel of all time:

cruel intentions 2 anyone?

Posted by: eat my shorts at December 23, 2008 3:53 PM

As I said in Facebook, this is way too much work. I'm making up a number --> 197.

Posted by: jamiepants at December 23, 2008 3:55 PM

Funny thing is, I've seen Cruel Intentions 1 AND 3. I should give myself the extra point for sitting through it, despite not seeing 2.

Posted by: Colin at December 23, 2008 3:55 PM

192

The rest are now in my nexflix queue.

Posted by: rene at December 23, 2008 3:56 PM

113.

I've some how managed to see just about every tween/romcom on the list but have only seen one Star Wars movie. And I call myself a sci-fi nerd. I'm so ashamed.

Posted by: mandasarah at December 23, 2008 3:56 PM

81. Yes, with both Ewok TV movies.

Posted by: Jay at December 23, 2008 3:56 PM

156 I am proud to be in such good company as Julie and Clee Shay. Let's watch a movie together.

Posted by: Mike R. at December 23, 2008 3:57 PM

76 including those seen only in part. So far, I'm the most lifefull one here. Everything's coming up Bullet! The only one's I regret missing are I Spit On Your Grave, Waiting for Guffman and maybe Calendar Girls and I sure wish I'd missed a lot of those I've seen.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at December 23, 2008 3:58 PM

111

Posted by: Jason at December 23, 2008 3:59 PM

87.5

A few were halfsies-walked out of the first Harry Potter, forced into watching part of a LotR movie, don't remember which one, and skipped through most of The Notebook because that movie suh-hucks.

Posted by: Sabrina at December 23, 2008 4:00 PM

120. That's reasonable, I think, though there were definitely movies that that I thought I had seen when I actually haven't. Weird.

Posted by: kalafraja at December 23, 2008 4:01 PM

I'm with jamiepants. Just too much work. Plus I think I've done this before, though I'll be damned if I can remember my score.

Also: even if we only count since the age of 12, seeing 239 movies in 15 years probably wouldn't disqualify me from having a life. Eight-five is fucking small potatoes. Maybe it should be: "If you've seen more than 85 of these movies this month, you have no life."

Posted by: Sean at December 23, 2008 4:01 PM

Ninety-nine! Can I have back those two minutes of my non-existant life.

Posted by: Mrs Smith at December 23, 2008 4:03 PM

174. I'm okay with that.

Posted by: Dangle McGee at December 23, 2008 4:03 PM

87 - does that mean I've almost got a life? Because Club Dredd was still on that list... not on purpose, at least.

Now I want to know what the hell was the criteria for this list?

Posted by: Anne (in Reno) at December 23, 2008 4:04 PM

153. This is such a weird list. Virtually no classic films, yet tons bad, bad movies. I'm not sure how to feel about this total.

Posted by: Em at December 23, 2008 4:04 PM

83 - odd list.

Posted by: Bierceambrose at December 23, 2008 4:06 PM

Posted by: twig at December 23, 2008 4:12 PM

56! Fifty-six!

Amazing! I do so have a life! Mind you, only 20 of those films were actually seen in theaters - the rest were all either video or DVD, or caught on telly.

(And 12 of the 20 make up the three Indiana Jones, 6 Star Wars and 3 LotR films.)

Posted by: The Wanderer at December 23, 2008 4:16 PM

Posted by: courtney at December 23, 2008 4:17 PM

94....I watch a lot of movies, but I don't really want to watch any of the movies on that list that I haven't seen. In fact, I've carefully avoided most of those movies.

Posted by: pianofilledwithflames at December 23, 2008 4:18 PM

178... almost my handicap

Posted by: jim at December 23, 2008 4:19 PM

114. Is someone gonna do some stats on these numbers?

Posted by: Sandra L at December 23, 2008 4:19 PM

150 booyah...it's funny I actually did this today on Facebook. Hmmm...yeah.

Posted by: griffimx at December 23, 2008 4:19 PM

150

And I noticed that while you saw the original Star Wars movies, you skipped on seeing the prequels. Way to go Rowles. You are a greater man than I.

Posted by: Sidewinder at December 23, 2008 4:19 PM

85

But I swear I don't have a life!

Posted by: Trouble at December 23, 2008 4:19 PM

126. Awesome. Why this list again? Strange.

Posted by: mc at December 23, 2008 4:19 PM

104
Quite a few on the list that I've not yet seen but are on my "to do" list. Thanks for the diversion - much needed today!

Posted by: prairiegirl at December 23, 2008 4:20 PM

191. There are a couple on there that I may have seen but didn't count cuz i can't quite remember, so it ay be higher. I know what movie i want to see next though...it's the one about boobeing naked on a bear-skin rug wearing nothing but a filly pair of socks, a necklace, and some horn-rimmed glasses. I would go see that more time than I've been to a Rocky Horror Show on a Saturday night.

...and I'm working on my 275th anniversary there.

Posted by: PissBoy at December 23, 2008 4:21 PM

189. I will still contest I have a life. Maybe just a few more years of movie watching then some people.

Posted by: jadashay at December 23, 2008 4:21 PM

190. I didn't break 200, which makes me sad.

Posted by: Snath at December 23, 2008 4:23 PM

183. I knew there was a reason I frequented this site...

Jay: I taped the Ewok movies off of network television as a kid. Oh yeah.

Posted by: Erica O. at December 23, 2008 4:26 PM

156, and definitely no life what so ever, but that's not the movies fault.

Posted by: Catag at December 23, 2008 4:26 PM

I think a good way to correlate the number would be Number of Movies on List Seen vs. Age simply because the older you get the higher the number should be.

Posted by: PissBoy at December 23, 2008 4:27 PM

179 and because I have a scary memory I can probably tell you where and when I saw most of them for the first time; In most cases who I was with as well.

In fact, just saw Waterworld for the very first time over the weekend because nearly Mr. Kizzer saw it in the free movies on demand. I wasn't impressed, or entertained for that matter, but now my number's 179 instead of a paltry 178 so I guess I owe him an apology for all the shit I gave him for making me watch it... Nah, that must just be the Christmas spirit acting up again. He should still feel bad for making me watch Waterworld.

Posted by: Kizzer at December 23, 2008 4:30 PM

88. but if i included the sequels of the movies that were up there but weren't posted for some reason, it would've been a few more :/

Posted by: becky at December 23, 2008 4:34 PM

56. But if you consider the fact that I've seen many of the movies on my list upwards of 5 times, well....

Posted by: frumpiefox at December 23, 2008 4:36 PM

It's an older list, becky, which is why some newer stuff isn't included.

Posted by: Snath at December 23, 2008 4:37 PM

142

I delurked to write that. God I wish I could erase High Tension from my list though.

Posted by: Stephen at December 23, 2008 4:37 PM

169 -

I started to get worried there for a minute, but that's sort of respectable.

But who the hell came up with this particular list? Fucking Princess Diaries 2? Then again, I guess that's a decent barometer for having no life...

Posted by: MG at December 23, 2008 4:38 PM

166, but I really thought it would be more.

Posted by: MissNev at December 23, 2008 4:39 PM

119. I already knew I had no life.

Posted by: Lindsey at December 23, 2008 4:43 PM

168...

Posted by: Matt at December 23, 2008 4:45 PM

145. That's the number of movies I'm certain I've seen. There's probably another 10 that I think I've seen but I'm not completely positive.

Posted by: DoubleH at December 23, 2008 4:48 PM

123....I am leasing a life, with an option to buy.

Posted by: Rubble44 at December 23, 2008 4:48 PM

147 (and that's with having seen none of the Potter flicks)

What's even more scary is the number of these films I actually own. I am a sad, strange little wagon.

Posted by: Alabamapink at December 23, 2008 4:51 PM

58, but I've seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show and The 3 LOTRs movies enough times to count for about 87.

Posted by: BWeaves at December 23, 2008 4:58 PM

151 ... sigh

Posted by: blacksred at December 23, 2008 4:59 PM

I played on Facebook. I had 96.

Posted by: Melody at December 23, 2008 5:01 PM

149

damn i am with pink also...its sad i own a lot of these. most of these i have seen more than once

Posted by: pabs at December 23, 2008 5:03 PM

128. Respectable, I think.

Posted by: zio at December 23, 2008 5:08 PM

104 - thankfully minus a few hours when I decided not to sit through on hangover Sunday tv (The Mask, The Grinch, ALong Came Polly, etc.). but still...

Posted by: eskiimomo at December 23, 2008 5:16 PM

95... and I've been alive shorter than most of the people here. The worst one of these films is probably Scary Movie, Dead Mans Chest, Napoleon Dynamite, or the Grinch. Dead Mans Chest was so awful, the porno movie version with the sex scenes cut out would be more fun to watch. Scary Movie was so unfunny, it made Rob Schneider look like Billy Wilder. And the Grinch made Boris Karlof actually come back to life as a mummy in anger.

No life, and I'm only 16.

Posted by: George at December 23, 2008 5:22 PM

148 - it is funny how many movies on this list I've seen by accident. I didn't mean to watch them, it just sort of happened.

Posted by: phquaryn at December 23, 2008 5:25 PM

150 even.

Posted by: Squrrox at December 23, 2008 5:25 PM

184...the list brought back some memories...and not all good ones.

Posted by: L at December 23, 2008 5:27 PM

An even hundred! 100! Whee! and it means exactly nothin' like every other meme!

But I do love Joe Dirt. I laugh at that every time it's on cable, and I don't care who knows.

Posted by: Stacy D at December 23, 2008 5:28 PM

94. someof these movies suck though. can't believe i watched them and remembered the plot.

Posted by: dene chen at December 23, 2008 5:32 PM

136

...and a big thanks for whittling another 4 minutes off the clock before I can leave work! Damn Central Standard time zone.

Posted by: lovechampagne at December 23, 2008 5:35 PM

Dammit, after reading Stacy D's comment on Joe Dirt it finally hit, I know the critical movie that's missing... MAJOR LEAGUE! How could this list not have Major League? Every time it's on t.v. I turn the channel to that, doesn't matter how drunk I am. Drives the trophy wife mental...

Posted by: Xtreme at December 23, 2008 5:35 PM

104.

Huh. I really thought I've have a higher score than that. Of course, there were quite a few movies on that list that I wouldn't see, even under punishment of death.

Posted by: Jeni at December 23, 2008 5:37 PM

27. That's an eclectic list, though. I've seen a lot more movies, just not THESE movies.

Posted by: rlr260 at December 23, 2008 5:37 PM

106

Posted by: Kate at December 23, 2008 5:41 PM

93. Does that mean I sort of have a life? Because I really haven't for quite a while now.

I can't believe Dustin hasn't seen Old School or Shaun of the Dead. Or even Waiting for Guffman.

Posted by: katy at December 23, 2008 5:48 PM

149 for me, woot!

Posted by: Celie at December 23, 2008 5:51 PM

74

Ye gods and little fishes, but I appear to be in rare company. Only two people have seen fewer than I.

I suppose I should turn in my Pajiba business cards and go rent some DVDs.

Posted by: Archvillain at December 23, 2008 5:52 PM

108...pretty middle-of-the-pack. Honestly, I thought that'd be a low score among this crowd!

Posted by: meaux at December 23, 2008 5:53 PM

123. i dont know what that says about me!

Posted by: NDR at December 23, 2008 5:54 PM

So, I only watched 75 of these. And that 75 counts King Kong three times since it didn't specify which one. So even though I break a hundred films watched each year easily (not even accounting for time wasted on books, live theater, live music, recorded music, video games, board games, and online communities/blogs), I magically have a life? Fail. I can't afford to have a life. All my money is wasted on shitty and/or pretentious films no one gives a damn about. Which is why they aren't on a list on Facebook. Because only me and that smelly homeless guy saw them, and he didn't even pay for a ticket.

Posted by: Robert at December 23, 2008 5:56 PM

160! A large number in comparison to others on this list, but I know that this is just a small glimpse of the thousands of movies I have seen in my lifetime...

My only objection to this is that seeing some of the listed films in no way proves that you have no life. I, for one, don't know anyone who thought The Princess Bride was a waste of time!

Posted by: Claire at December 23, 2008 5:56 PM

179, I just recently got a life, mmmkay? J/k, there are tons of trilogies and sequels, which means sometimes I see the sequel just because. And thus, my tally is 179. I've seen pieces of others, just didnt think it was fair to include it.

A better survey is the Film Addict site which uses the IMDB top 250.

I watched 77% from that list!

Posted by: yocean at December 23, 2008 5:58 PM

122 on this list, though I only got 18% on that IMDb list. I guess I've seen a lot of crappy movies - my excuse is that time I spent working in a video store. At least 30 of those 122 were during my year in that place. So many hours I'll never get back...

Either way, I think the ultimate measure of whether or not you have a life is your answer to the question "Wanna fill out this long survey about whether or not you have a life?"

But it could be lower since I'm not sure if some of them were referring to remakes as opposed to originals (e.g. there's no way I saw the remake of The Fog, but nothing was keeping my 12-year-old self from watching the original on VHS!).

How's this for not having a life: I'm the only person (so far) to point out that the actor mentioned in the previous post, Jimmi Simpson, was actually in Loser, from where you got the header pic for this post.

Posted by: Vixen at December 23, 2008 8:22 PM

Why yes Snath, I am 16. I was born on May 1, 1992, so that leads to a bit of a handicap for me. Rocky Horror Picture show was well before my time, and I never want to see that unless I'm drunk, stoned, or on something stronger.

I spend most of my day hanging out with idiots, and this site is one of the few my school computer system hasn't blocked. So this site is a sort of sanctuary for me. Thanks Snath.

Jessika, I actually didn't mind Waterworld. After hearing again and again on how it was the worst film of all time, the non complete awfulness of it surprised me. It's not a good film, but it doesn't have to be. I still felt I enjoyed it, especially the crazy stuff.

Posted by: Cara at December 23, 2008 8:29 PM

106 ... and I've seen only a half dozen movies in the last couple of years. Not because I have a life, I just have had a shititude of other non-life things crowding out movies.

This is a cherrypick list though, i.e. people hear these are good/entertaining/so-bad-you-have-to-see-it and so most anybody who owns a television has seen a huge chunk of these. There are a bunch on here that I have seen just by virtue of flipping channels over the last decade, not because I went to the theatre, rented or netflixed them.

Dustin could probably tack on another 500 movies he's seen that aren't so cherrypicked and my score would only go up by 3 (and that's just because a list that long would inevitably have some goat porn).

Want to really measure lack of life? Make a new list but exclude any movies that have been shown on TNT or TBS.

Posted by: stipe42 at December 23, 2008 8:33 PM

A life? What is this "a life" of which you speak?

Glad to see I'm not bringing up the rear at 48. But I've seen way way more movies than this, just not so many recently as I've gotten more frugal/crankier.

Posted by: bucdaddy at December 23, 2008 8:44 PM

151 or 152, I got a brief hiccup in my count around the star wars block and I'll be fucked if I'm going to go back and count over again.

By the way, I couldn't remember what The Hot Chick was, though it sounded so familiar, and I just now realized that it's that Rob Schneider movie where he switched bodies with Rachel McAdams, and I actually think...I may have borrowed it from the library? Why would I have borrowed that from the library? But I think I did, at least I have memories of watching the movie. I'm so confused and I need to lie down. It's like a repressed memory resurfacing of 'Nam or your uncle molesting you, except you were the one molesting your mind.

Therefore, some of the movies in the 65 are ones which I saw the second half of before the first half, or arranged in a bizarre pattern of scenes over the course of a year or so which eventually came to be coherently arranged in my brain.

Oh, and Nicole, I'd love to watch the final three episodes of Star Wars with you. I just had practice watching them with the neighbor's kids (age 7 and 5) while babysitting. The whole time they pretended they'd never seen them before so that I would explain every detail and answer every "why?" question to their secretly cruel and devious enjoyment. Maybe I'll get them back by showing them my bootleg of the Star Wars Christmas Special (starring Chewbacca and his family, and featuring Art Carney and Bea Arthur). Is that child abuse? Anyway, I believe you Nicole. I may be a sucker, but I believe you.

Posted by: ph at December 24, 2008 4:25 PM

I was trying to find the highest score in here, looks like it's between 175-194. I have a couple of friends on facebook I saw that had scores of well into the 200s. Now that requires you to sit thru Scary Movies and a bunch of Star Wars and other movies with at least 4-5 sequels. AT some point you gotta realize that the formulaic plots and just being plain stupid and not funny doesn't entertain you as much as it used to.

Posted by: ph at December 24, 2008 5:45 PM

Yeah, I started this on Facebook. Well, I technically stole it from a friend and passed it onto the rest of the 'jibans. No idea how the list was generated, though. My only guess is that the lesser quality movies mean you have even less of a life?. And yeah, my score's 214. Soooo, I win?
