Best Television Series-Long Performance -- All Time

An Evening Comment Diversion / Dustin Rowles

Comment Diversions | June 2, 2009 | Comments (164)

Tonight’s diversion was actually inspired by a comment Steven Lloyd Wilson left in last night’s best acting performance diversion last night: “The entire cast of ‘Battlestar Galactica.’ Love or hate the finale, for seventy-odd episodes you could not look away from the television screen because of the raw power of that cast’s acting.”

It’s true, too, although I’d put the cast of “The Wire” up against “BSG” any day. But tonight’s question is a little more focused than best cast. Tonight I ask: All time, what actor or actress best inhabited their television character? In other words, who is responsible for the best series-long performance?

There’s a lot of seriously great performances I could rattle off, but if I have to limit myself to one, I’ll risk humiliation and go with my heart over my brain: Kyle Chandler in “Friday Night Lights.”

Comments

I'll go with an easy one:

Jason Alexander - George Constanza (Seinfeld)

Posted by: TylerDFC at June 2, 2009 8:34 PM

Oh that's easy.
Ian McShane- Al "cocksucker" Swearengen (Deadwood)

Posted by: Jules at June 2, 2009 8:36 PM

Lee Tergesen - Tobias Beecher (OZ)

Posted by: JK at June 2, 2009 8:42 PM

I think I am going to agree 100% with Kyle Chandler in Friday Night Lights.

Posted by: Rob at June 2, 2009 8:44 PM

David Cross - Tobias fucking Fünke. The worlds first analyst/therapist.

Posted by: krza at June 2, 2009 8:47 PM

3 great picks to start the discussion, but for pure front-to-back brilliance, James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano

Posted by: Marlo at June 2, 2009 8:48 PM

Kyle Chandler/Connie Britton. I didn't choose between them last night, and I'm not choosing between them now.

Posted by: SaBrina at June 2, 2009 8:49 PM

George Wendt as Norm Peterson.

Posted by: branded at June 2, 2009 8:50 PM

Michael Cera. Arrested Development - What? Someone was going to say it. It might as well be me. Of course that was tough what will all the kick ass talent on that show.

IF I might throw in a second, I would also add Woody Harrelson in Cheers.

Posted by: cmoody at June 2, 2009 8:50 PM

Ian Mcshane - Deadwood

Posted by: Kevin Longrie at June 2, 2009 8:52 PM

OK, that kind of makes it seem like I didn't choose between them when thinking of whom I should fantasize about. They were one of my choices in the "best performance in a movie" thread, because following the rules are for FOLLOWERS.

Posted by: SaBrina at June 2, 2009 8:53 PM

Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs...Miami Vice.

Peter Falk as Colombo (and the recurring actors that played the villains. From the Shat to Donald Pleasence to the wonderful Louis Jourdan AND, Patrick motherfuckin' McGoohan.

Patrick Stewart as Jean Luc Picard.

Tyne Daly and the other chick from Cagney & Lacey

George Dzundza and Chris Noth (first pairing) in Law & Order.

Tom Selleck as Thomas Magnum.

The Hoff as Michael Knight...a man *deep breathing* who does not exist...

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at June 2, 2009 8:55 PM

Andre Braugher's "Frank Pembleton" from Homicide: Life On The Streets.
One of the most complex characters ever written for TV and the man brought it all in every episode.

Posted by: Spender at June 2, 2009 8:55 PM

Dennis Franz as Andy Sipowicz.

Posted by: slower lower at June 2, 2009 8:59 PM

Oh crap, sorry folks!

If it's just one, then I would go with:

Peter Falk as Colombo.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at June 2, 2009 9:02 PM

John C. McGinley as Dr. Perry Cox

Naveen Andrews as Sayid

and a wild card going with my heart over my brain, William Daniels as Mr. Feeney on Boy Meets World.

Posted by: Josh at June 2, 2009 9:04 PM

Donald Faison in Scrubs.

Posted by: Stacy D at June 2, 2009 9:04 PM

Well if we are going to go all Arrested Development, Jessica Walters goddamnit.

Nearly everyone on BSG is riveting.

I'll second James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano.

And Wildcard: Neal Patrick Harris as Dr. Horrible. That performance was fascinating. Wait, that doesn't count as TV does it?

Posted by: DivineGigi at June 2, 2009 9:04 PM

Though he kind of seems like an ass in real life, I've got to go with Kelsey Grammer as Dr. Frasier Crane. If only for the sheer longevity of the role.

Posted by: meaux at June 2, 2009 9:04 PM

Tony Hale on Arrested Development

Jason Dohring on Veronica Mars

and Micheal Emmerson on Lost

Posted by: brian at June 2, 2009 9:09 PM

Boys: Selleck as Magnum.

Girls: Jessica Simpson in Newlyweds and every fucking thing from there on. She is a phony, but a real phony.

Posted by: Lance at June 2, 2009 9:10 PM

The cast of MASH. Although I'd single out Alan Alda for Hawkeye.

Posted by: Mrcreosote at June 2, 2009 9:10 PM

Andre Braugher seconded.

Also, Lauren Ambrose on Six Feet Under.

And everyone on Carnivale, though it sadly died young.

Posted by: Caroline at June 2, 2009 9:12 PM

Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock. His unapologetically Republican, jack-ass Jack Donaghy is an endless source of delight.

Jessica Walter, Arrested Development. Lucille Bluth has no equal, though I would put Kelly Bishop's Emily Gilmore in as a close second.

I also enjoy Hugh Laurie as Dr. House, though I suspect this has more to do with Laurie than the character or the show...

Posted by: Bonnie at June 2, 2009 9:14 PM

I'm voting for Selleck again, to stack the deck.

Posted by: Lance at June 2, 2009 9:15 PM

Ian McShane as Al Swearengen in Deadwood
Robin Weigert as Calamity Jane in Deadwood
Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House in House, MD
James Spader as Alan Shore in Boston Legal
Shelley Long as Diane Chambers on Cheers
Alan Alda as Hawkeye Pierce in M*A*S*H
Allison Janney as C. J. Cregg in The West Wing

And the ENTIRE CAST of Sports Night -- this is one case where it simply HAD to be all of them. And goddamn the executives at ABC to a flaming pit in hell for canceling this show. Whoever made the call? May birds pick out your eyes for all eternity, over and over and over again.

Posted by: Maryscott O'Connor at June 2, 2009 9:17 PM

And Ian McShane was on Magnum, P.I., in an ooga-booga, Heart of Darkness kind of role. I still remember it.

Posted by: Lance at June 2, 2009 9:17 PM

Andre braugher thirded.

And kevin mckidd on rome.

Posted by: solomonslines at June 2, 2009 9:17 PM

Lauren Graham, Gilmore Girls

Posted by: Michelle at June 2, 2009 9:19 PM

Oh, piffle. I won't apologise for not sticking to the Just Pick One thing. I CANNOT pick just one. It's simply impossible. Just a silly, silly rule.

Posted by: Maryscott O'Connor at June 2, 2009 9:20 PM

Remember Shelley Long half-bowing to Sam after the kissy thing, after the doorknob comes off in her hand, handing it back to him, saying, "Your knob..." and walking haughtily out the door?

My god, I nearly died laughing.

Posted by: Maryscott O'Connor at June 2, 2009 9:22 PM

Stephen Colbert as Stephen Colbert.

Posted by: Lucas at June 2, 2009 9:24 PM

Gabriel Byrne: "In Treatment"..makes it look so easy.

Jason Alexander: "Seinfeld"

Rip Torn: "The Larry Sanders Show"

Sam Waterston: "Law and Order"

The entire case of "Malcolm in the Middle"

Steve Carell: "The Office"; especially in non-manic episodes. Check out: "Halloween" and "Bring Your Daughter To Work Day"

Ricky Gervais: "Extras"

The entire cast of "Arrested Development"

Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer: "As Time Goes By"...again, performers who make it look effortless

I think that'll do for now

Posted by: KLS at June 2, 2009 9:25 PM

Agreed, Lucas. Pure brilliance.

Posted by: KLS at June 2, 2009 9:27 PM

James Garner - Brett Maverick

Posted by: UncleJR at June 2, 2009 9:29 PM

John Spencer and Allison Janney on West Wing. Hands fucking down.

Actually, that entire cast. Martin Sheen, Richard Schiff, Rob Lowe, Bradley Whitford...etc, etc etc. Extra props to Elizabeth Moss for being great on West Wing and even better in Mad Men.

Posted by: figgy at June 2, 2009 9:30 PM

Hell, if Mary O'Hoolahan gets to pick more than one then so shall I!

I NEED to add David Tennant as: The Doctor.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at June 2, 2009 9:31 PM

Anthony Edwards as Dr. Mark Greene on ER. I bawled my eyes out when he died and I totally bawled again when he showed up again last season.

Nothing makes me cry, by the way... nothing.

Posted by: Mrs Smith at June 2, 2009 9:38 PM

I would add these to the already impressive list:
Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy.
James Marsters as Spike.
Kristin Bell as Veronica Mars.
Kyle McLachlan as Dale Cooper.
Summer Glau as River Tam.
Chi McBride as Emerson Cod.
Gigi Edgley as Chiana.
Amy Acker as Fred/Illyria.
Michael C. Hall as David Fisher.

And from shows that aren't over so may not yet count as series-long:
David Tennant as The Doctor.
Michael C. Hall as Dexter.
Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester.
Leighton Meester as Blair Waldorf.

Posted by: kio at June 2, 2009 9:43 PM

Dude....doooode I can't forget David Morse on St. Elsewhere.

The guy was ASS-RAPED. before Lifetime Movie Network even existed.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at June 2, 2009 9:44 PM

Generational divides emerging.............

William Shatner as Kirk.

Posted by: Lance at June 2, 2009 9:47 PM

Naveen Andrews as Sayid on Lost

Lauren Graham on Gilmore Girls

Katee Sackoff on BSG

Nathan Fillion and Summer Glau on Firefly

John Larroquette on Night Court

Chi McBride on Pushing Daises

Posted by: jM at June 2, 2009 9:50 PM

My votes go to:
1)The entire Monty Python crew
2)John Rhys Davies as The Professor on Sliders (It's where I first saw him and the image of him as The Professor has stuck with me, even when he was playing a dwarf in LOTR and the wizard guy in Krod Mandoon)

Posted by: alphawhiskey at June 2, 2009 9:53 PM

The best performance is obviously... Jim Belushi!

HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!! The look on your face was priceless, up yours Jim!

In all seriousness, a tie between Nathan Fillion as Malcolm Reynolds in Firefly, Steve Carell as Michael Scott in The Office, and Terry O'Quinn and Michael Emerson as Locke and Ben respectively on Lost.

Posted by: George at June 2, 2009 9:55 PM

Best of all time? Carroll O'Connor as Archie Bunker, clearly.

Posted by: AMT at June 2, 2009 9:57 PM

Sean Hayes on Will & Grace. And I'll second the Gabriel Byrne love.

Posted by: Meghan at June 2, 2009 10:00 PM

Andy Griffith as Ben Matlock.

Posted by: Heathen at June 2, 2009 10:10 PM

So glad somebody gave Kelsey G. a shout-out for Frasier. Absolutely hilarious show, consistently. I can't decide, of course, but I've got to praise Edie Falco for The Sopranos, Sonia Sohn of The Wire, S. Epatha Merkerson of Law and Order, and the cast of Roseanne. They don't make blue-collar sitcoms like they used to. Oh, yeah, they don't make blue-collar sitcoms anymore.

Posted by: samantha t at June 2, 2009 10:11 PM

I'm sorry kio, but Geller's not an actress. Look what she's done after Buffy... on second thought, don't look. I can't even admit it, I love Geller too much, damn you for taking her Freddy Prince Jr.

Posted by: George at June 2, 2009 10:13 PM

Dammit! dammit! DAMMIT! Somone went with my Cheers duo already!

Fine then! I'll replace them with Jim Henson as Kermit the Frog in Sesame Street and the Muppet Show and Angela Lansbury in Murder She Wrote!

AND the entire cast of Golden Girls!

Posted by: Four Eyes at June 2, 2009 10:17 PM

John C. McGinley, Scrubs
Alan Alda, M*A*S*H (Loretta Swit and Harry Morgan are pretty close, too)
Jessica Walter, Arrested Development
Michael C. Hall, Six Feet Under (haven't watched much of Dexter yet, but I have a feeling that performance would be on here too)
Sam Waterston, I'll Fly Away.
Everyone on The Wire is great, I guess if I had to choose, I would say Robert Wisdom (Bunny).

Posted by: Red at June 2, 2009 10:19 PM

Alison Janney on The West Wing (In fact, the entire cast were goddamn awesome, but it was always Janney who did it the most for me)(Also, special mention to Alan Alda, who I think won an Emmy for his season 6 or seven performance: he was so good, I actually liked his Republican candidate. Now that is good acting. (Even better, he is liberal in real life).

Mary Louise Parker's performance on Weeds is always stunning, most of all for it's understated-ness and lack of showy-ness. Also, MLP has to get extra brownie points for being the most frequently naked actress on primetime. Girl is hot. (She is my girl crush and my 'who I'd turn gay for' person).

Hugh Laurie on House is also a favourite.

Also, Katherine Heigl on Grey's Anatomy.

I jest people, I jest.

Posted by: JJ McClay at June 2, 2009 10:19 PM

Kyle MacLachlan's Agent Dale Cooper.

"DAMN good coffee, and HOT!"

I rest my motherfucking case....

Posted by: Diablo at June 2, 2009 10:19 PM

Jack Webb - Sgt. Joe Friday in Dragnet.

Zach Braff - John Dorian in Scrubs.

Martin Sheen - Josiah Bartlett in The West Wing.

Posted by: Matt at June 2, 2009 10:21 PM

Seconds/thirds/what-have-yous to: Kevin McKidd in Rome, Colbert as Colbert, and Andre Braugher as Frank Pembleton.

Posted by: Marlo at June 2, 2009 10:21 PM

And: entire cast- The Wire; Arrested Development.

Posted by: Marlo at June 2, 2009 10:23 PM

Wow. Ummmm ... first three come to mind:

Andre Braugher/Frank Pembleton.

Carroll O'Connor/Archie Bunker.

Lucille Ball/Lucy Ricardo.

Now I'll look at the comments ...

Yes yes yes to Peter Falk/Columbo

Also William Daniels, but as Dr. Mark Craig. He was a son of a bitch doctor before House was House.

Can you tell I haven't had HBO etc. for ages?

Posted by: , (the commenter formerly known as bucdaddy) at June 2, 2009 10:26 PM

Ellen Muth - Dead Like Me

Katee Sackoff - BSG

James Spader - Boston Legal

Nathan Fillion - Firefly

Posted by: Banshee at June 2, 2009 10:26 PM

Good God, I forgot the shout-out to my homeboy. Can't believe nobody mentioned:

Don Knotts/Barney Fife.

Posted by: , (the commenter formerly known as bucdaddy) at June 2, 2009 10:27 PM

Fillion for Firefly - Just a fantastic show, and Fillion is, simply put, the perfect anchor.

Hugh Laurie for House - While I'm not as big a fan of the show as I used to be, mostly because it's so goddamn formulaic its insane, but Laurie's consistently golden performance will get me through an hour of "It could be Lupus".

Neil Patrick Harris for HIMYM - Say what you want, but whenever he's on camera, your eye shifts to him. The guy could read a math textbook on the show and make it entertaining. And thats with legendary co-stars like Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan beside him. The highest of fives are in order.

and now some quick ones...
John C McGinley, anybody from The Wire, Alan Alda, Alec BaldWIN, Steve Carrell, David Cross, and I love both Kevin Nealon and Mary-Louise Parker on Weeds.

Posted by: chayes at June 2, 2009 10:28 PM

Oh, and Ian McShane.

Posted by: chayes at June 2, 2009 10:28 PM

John Forsythe as Charlie

Posted by: Che Grovera at June 2, 2009 10:29 PM

The series is still in progress (2nd season) but I'm casting my vote for Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad. I thought I would hate it as it was literally described to me as Weeds with the goofy dad from Malcom in the Middle. I would like find the chucklefuck who told me this and show him how motherfucking wrong he was.

Posted by: Je Nais Se Twat at June 2, 2009 10:32 PM

He was mentioned in the film actor thread -- Andre Royo as Bubbles in The Wire. I just finished season 4, and as the show is still picking up steam as a DVD fave, I won't spoil. Suffice it to say that the soundproof glass partition in the last scene probably prevented a complete emotional meltdown at the sansho1 household.

Also, Barney Fife forever, bitches.

Posted by: sansho1 at June 2, 2009 10:34 PM

All the way to here without Gillian Anderson for The X-Files? Really?

Fourthing (or whatever it is at this point) Andre Braugher.

Agreeing with James Spader for Boston Legal and John Spencer for The West Wing.

Mary, Ed, Gavin, Betty, Ted, Cloris and everyone else on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Posted by: Louise at June 2, 2009 10:36 PM

Bob Newhart as both Bob Hartley and Dick Louden.

Posted by: muchsarcasm at June 2, 2009 10:37 PM

Lance, if I were gonna give it to anyone from Star Trek, I'd give it to Leonard Nimoy.

In fact... Leonard Nimoy, in Star Trek. Without him, that show would be nothing.

"Fascinating."

Posted by: Maryscott O'Connor at June 2, 2009 10:38 PM

And Claire Danes as Angela Chase -- okay, so I was twice her age when the show aired, she still broke my heart.

Posted by: sansho1 at June 2, 2009 10:45 PM

Gillian Anderson & David Duchovny in X-Files
Kristen Bell in Veronica Mars
Ellen Degeneres in Ellen
Danny DeVito, Andy Kaufman & Christopher Lloyd in Taxi
Rainn Wilson in The Office
Stephen Colbert in The Colbert Report (for all you right wingnuts reading this, yes he's acting)
The entire cast of Rome.

Have not seen either the Wire or Arrested Development BUT I have both entire series on DVD waiting to be watched. I've heard nothing but good stuff about both shows so I can't wait.

Posted by: John W at June 2, 2009 10:53 PM

Ian McShane - Al Swearengen

Posted by: Mick J at June 2, 2009 10:53 PM

JJ: you and I are the only sane people in this entire thread.

Sheesh, you guys. I'm so disappointed.

Posted by: figgy at June 2, 2009 11:02 PM

Alison Janney, hands down- to stand out in such a strong ensemble take astonishing talent
I'll second Michael C Hall as Dexter but throw in Erik King as Doakes, for so perfectly twisting the cop/villian dichotomy.

Posted by: RandyPanTheGoatboy at June 2, 2009 11:08 PM

Bryan Cranston as Walter White in Breaking Bad

Posted by: matt at June 2, 2009 11:11 PM

Toby Huss- Artie the Strongest Man in the World from The Adventures of Pete and Pete.

Setting a standard of glorious weirdness for an eager generation.

Pipe!

Posted by: Cat at June 2, 2009 11:12 PM

amy sedaris as jerri blank
julia sawahla as saffron monsoon
jk simmons as vern schillinger

and for brilliant voicework: KEVIN CONROY as bruce wayne/batman, in the animated series and on justice league and the various movies, he IS the voice of batmen i hear when i read old comics. whenever any other voice actor does batman, i can't instantly warm up to them. conroy makes me hard. HARD.

Posted by: gp at June 2, 2009 11:13 PM

Lauren Graham as Lorelei Gilmore

She killed it week after week episode after episode. Let's just forget season 7 ever happened ok?

And I second your KC on Friday Night Lights nomination!

Posted by: grace b at June 2, 2009 11:22 PM

Jon Hamm is fucking brilliant in Mad Men-- although it's tough to pick one actor from that show, and I would give most of the credit to the amazing writing.

Posted by: rachel at June 2, 2009 11:22 PM

Adam Baldwin as Adam Baldwin in Chuck and Firefly.

Fuck yes. And Danny Devito and Charlie Day in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Posted by: jM at June 2, 2009 11:34 PM

Alan Alda on M*A*S*H* was the first thing to come to mind.

Also, not necessarily great performances alone, but there's no denying the awesome chemistry of the performances together of James Roday and Dule Hill on Psych.

Posted by: Bistro at June 2, 2009 11:37 PM

I'm torn -

Bob Denver as Maynard G. Krebs on Dobie Gillis?

Or Bob Denver as Gilligan on Lost, the Early Years

Posted by: Sanity Clause at June 2, 2009 11:49 PM

Although Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler OWN Friday Night Lights, the younger actors deserve more recognition. Gaius Charles and Zach Gilford as Smash Williams and Matt Saracen, respectively, completely live in their characters.

I second (third, fouth, fifth?) Michael Emerson as Ben Linus.

I am also going to agree with Jason Dorhing as Logan Echolls. I hated that character. I mean, fucking hated him. I never wanted Logan and Veronica to be together, and definitely didn't see how he made everyone's panties wet...but Dorhing was amazing. I love Kristen Bell, but it seems like she was just playing a funnier, smarter, more clever version of herself most days. Logan was the character you couldn't take your eyes off of.

Finally, Chloe Sevigny as Nicolette Grant-Hendrickson in Big Love. She can bring the crazy!

Posted by: Austin asking for trouble at June 2, 2009 11:51 PM

Agree with most of these except...Steve Carrell on The Office? Really? He inhabits the character, certainly, but is playing 'asshole' - albeit consistently - that great an achievement?

I would go with:
Ricky Gervais as David Brent in The (real) Office
Damien Lewis as Soames Forsyte in The Forsyte Saga
David Mitchell as Mark Corrigan in Peep Show (any of you who have not yet seen this show need to, immediately)

Posted by: Alayna at June 2, 2009 11:52 PM

Because Arrested Development doesn't have enough recognition, Will Arnett as Gob.

Also, Patrick Warburton as Brock Sampson. A character who's supposed to be the biggest badass on TV is voiced by the guy born to voice badasses. Awesome.

Posted by: Poobiscuit at June 2, 2009 11:56 PM

Again, Ian McShane in Deadwood.

If we can include John Adams, a mini-series, then Paul Giamatti's certainly in line for some credit too, I think.

And, of course, Dan Castellaneta as Homer Simpson.

Posted by: Benny at June 3, 2009 12:03 AM

Diana Rigg as Mrs. Peel, The Avengers

Posted by: t6 at June 3, 2009 12:10 AM

As incredible as McShane was in Deadwood, my vote for that series would have to be for Brad Dourif as Doc Cochran.

Also affirming Gillian Anderson and Carroll O'Connor.

I'll add Joanna Lumley as Patsy Stone.

Posted by: Kate at June 3, 2009 12:14 AM

Kevin McKidd for Lucius Vorenus times a million. I could go on and on about this one.

And although it may be bourgeois, Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Elaine Benes... although that's mostly a "womyn" thing, a "wow, check out that female comedian completely handing all those male comedians' asses to them" thing.

Alayna: The reason Steve Carrell would be mentioned for The Office is not because of "playing the asshole". That was Gervais' schtick, which was great for him, but the Carrell role isn't really an asshole. It's a guy who wants tremendously to be liked but has absolutely no capacity for determining appropriate behaviour. He's vulnerable and pathetic and you can't hate him despite his buffoonish behaviour.

Posted by: Ling at June 3, 2009 12:16 AM

Totally second the Dan Castellaneta vote as the best voice work in television. From a man. From a woman I'll always hold that Brittany Murphy is amazing as Luanne in King of the Hill. Just brilliant and hilarious.

Posted by: figgy at June 3, 2009 12:18 AM

Frances Conroy - Six Feet Under
Katee Sackhoff and Mary McDonnell - BSG
All four of The Golden Girls

Posted by: Brian Stevenson at June 3, 2009 12:23 AM

Andre Braugher's "Frank Pembleton" from Homicide: Life On The Streets all the way.

Posted by: djfox at June 3, 2009 12:24 AM

I second Je Nais Se Twat and Matt on Cranston. Somehow, Malcolm reruns will never feel the same, and I believe it's an incredible (and rare) thing to pull off.

Posted by: Sunsneezer at June 3, 2009 12:24 AM

Robin Weigert as Calamity Jane in Deadwood
Michael Emerson as Ben/Henry in Lost
Leighton Meester as Blair Waldorf in Gossip Girl
Bryan Cranston as Mr. White in Breaking Bad
Andre Royo as Bubbles in The Wire
Leonard Nimoy in Star Trek
David Tennant as The Doctor

actually i will include the entire cast of Deadwood, Friday Night Lights, Battlestar Galactica (even frakkin' Callie), and The Wire.

Posted by: pq at June 3, 2009 12:25 AM

Ones that haven't been mentioned yet:

Tyne Daly as Maxine on Judging Amy. Seriously my hero.

John Corbett as Chris in the Morning on Northern Exposure. He was always the finishing touch to an episode, giving pseudo-philosophical musings into the night.

Posted by: kelsy at June 3, 2009 12:34 AM

Patricia Routledge, Keeping Up Appearances.

Posted by: Jo 'Mama' Besser at June 3, 2009 12:47 AM

Cranston in Breaking Bad. He is unrelentingly raw and real. It's hard-to-watch TV.

The problem with Hugh Laurie in House is that the writing has gone to shit. Laurie is an accomplished actor, but we are left with a show that spins its wheels trying to over-do the last over-hyped "can't miss" cliffhanger. He gets shot! He's in an accident! He kills himself (three times now is it?) Jeesus, there's enough interesting diseases to go with that you don't have to have every episode happen whilst the hot chick is defusing a nuke with her nipples. Moreover, his treatment of his colleagues has grown tiresome. They all have substantial egos, and they would have walked out by now.

West Wing had good acting, but again, the writing got so bad for a while ther that it dragged the whole operation down. Resigning and then un-resigning? come the fuck on! WHY do you think you have to delve into the absurd to make a show about the most powerful man on earth interesting??

Posted by: morganew at June 3, 2009 12:56 AM

-John Goodman and Roseanne Barr in Roseanne
-Leighton Meester and Ed Westwick in Gossip Girl (shut up, they're talented)
-Michael J. Fox in Spin City AND Family Ties

The entire casts of Arrested Development, Golden Girls, 30 Rock, It's Always Sunny, and Frasier, because they are all brilliant.

Peter Capaldi as Malcolm Tucker from the insanely great The Thick of It. If you haven't seen it, watch it NOW.

Linda Cardellini as Lindsay Weir on Freaks and Geeks. That show hits waaaaay to close to home every time I watch it.

Posted by: MN_Jen at June 3, 2009 1:09 AM

I tried to pick one, but could only narrow it down to my three favorite AD alums: Will Arnett, David Cross and Tony Hale (gotta give some love for Buster).

Also Polly Walker (Atia in Rome) and Clancy Brown (Brother Justin in Carnivale.

And the entire fucking cast of Oz.

Shit. I might as well cancel everything but HBO...

And a warm fuzzy honorable mention to Woody Harrelson as (who else?) Woody. Though knowing what we do now, maybe he wasn't in character but just really baked.

Posted by: superEdna at June 3, 2009 1:11 AM

On my grandmother's behalf:
Eric Braeden (Victor Newman) on The Young and the Restless.

If I had to pick only one:
John Cleese (Basil Fawlty) on Fawlty Towers.

If I'm listing:
Andrew Sachs (Manuel), and Prunella Scales (Sybil Fawlty), also on Fawlty Towers.

Carroll Spinney (Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch) on Sesame Street.

Fred Rogers (Mr. Rogers) on Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.

Richard Mulligan (Burt Campbell) and Katherine Helmond (Jessica Tate) on Soap.

Jennifer Saunders (Edina), Joanna Lumley (Patsy), and Julia Sawalha (Saffron) on Absolutely Fabulous.

Anthony Head (Giles), James Marsters (Spike) and Alyson Hannigan (Willow) on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Oh come on. All Ed Westwick does is squint and whisper his lines like he has a bad cold.

Posted by: figgy at June 3, 2009 1:16 AM

Resigning and then un-resigning? come the fuck on! WHY do you think you have to delve into the absurd to make a show about the most powerful man on earth interesting??

Absurd? That was a constitutional power which the United States has never actually had to exercise, the "in case of emergency break glass" amendment. It was absolutely fascinating to see it in action.

My picks:

Richard Schiff as Toby Ziegler in The West Wing
Alison Janney as C.J. Cregg in The West Wing
Martin Sheen as Josiah Bartlet in The West Wing
Kelsey Grammer as Frasier Crane in Cheers and Frasier
Leonard Nimoy as Spock in Star Trek
John Larroquette as Dan Fielding in Night Court
Ian McShane as Bill Swearengen in Deadwood
Ben Browder as John Crichton in Farscape
Sherman Hemsley as George Jefferson in The Jeffersons
Michael Dorn as Worf in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine
Phil Hartman as Bill McNeal in NewsRadio
Carroll O'Connor as Archie Bunker in All In Tne Family
Bea Arthur as Maude in Maude

Billy West (as Fry) - Futurama

The entire cast of the West Wing - I'm with figgy on this one, where the hell is the love for the WW cast?? John Spencer, Alison Janney, Brad Whitford, Richard Schiff, Janel Moloney, Dule Hill, Martin Sheen - with the exception of Moira Kelley, the original WW cast rocked, and continued to do so all the way up to the finale despite being saddled with some seriously awful writing to work with at times.

And I don't know if voice actors count, but if they do, then Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill as Batman/Bruce Wayne and the Joker respectively in the Batman Animated Series; they were both consistently brilliant (and Hamill managed to create an even more menacing alternate version of the character in the Batman Beyond movie, Return of the Joker.)

Posted by: la reigna at June 3, 2009 1:32 AM

Gillian Anderson - The X-Files
Sarah Michelle Gellar - Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Polly Walker - Rome

Steve Carrell - The Office
Andre Braugher - Homicide: Life on the Streets
Hugh Laurie - House

And of course, all of The Wire. All of Battlestar Galactica. All of the Golden Girls.

Posted by: Parker at June 3, 2009 1:40 AM

Al Swearengen
Edith Bunker (Archie almost as good)
Bubbles
Lorelei Gilmore
Dr. Sam Beckett
Dr. Robert Hartley
Jodie Dallas (almost went with Benson DuBois but didn't want to get confused with Benson)

Posted by: LwoodPDowd at June 3, 2009 2:27 AM

I say this only being halfway through the series, but Kristen Bell as the eponymous Veronica Mars is just about the cutest and consistently witty/funny/awesome/cool character/performance I'm likely to ever see.

Though having seen the whole series, I'll vote for Jessica Walter as Lucille Bluth on Arrested Development (and I'll happily second any vote for any other regular on that cast). Lucille Bluth could've vied for Most Annoying Character Ever, but Walter's performance consistently sold every damn joke and half-joke given to the character.

If Lena Olin was on the whole series of Alias, I'd give a vote to her, too. How fucking awesome was she on that show?

Posted by: whatBENwatches at June 3, 2009 2:31 AM

This is kind of random and makes me feel old but for some reason Mandy Patinkin while he was on Chicago Hope popped into mind.

Posted by: kidtiger at June 3, 2009 2:59 AM

JK Simmons as Vernon Schillinger in Oz.

Posted by: ben at June 3, 2009 3:18 AM

Ling: (ok I don't know how to make that lovely and bold)

But it's so completely the opposite! David Brent is by no means just an 'asshole'; he is deeply, deeply pathetic and desperate in the way you describe, but in a way you have met with before. Cringe-worthy, hilarious, but never falsely sympathetic.

Gervais does so much with a single gesture (most of all his furtive glances) - so much that I've never seen in 'Michael Scott'. Honestly I haven't seen enough of the American re-make to argue the point (and perhaps his character has developed since my last viewing), but I must say that Carrell - and the show, for that matter - reminded me of one of those un-funny comedians who yell all their jokes to compensate (and not in a clever or ironic way).

PS: what is it with American television producers and their false belief that anything can be Americanised without being fundamentally compromised and becoming unwatchable? Is a foreign accent really all that bad?
c.f. Life on Mars, Kath & Kim

PPS: HAS NOBODY SEEN PEEP SHOW?!?!?

Posted by: Alayna at June 3, 2009 3:36 AM

t6 I love you! Diana Rigg as Emma Peel for the win.

I'm going to add William Petersen as Gil Grissom on CSI. I don't care what you think of procedurals, the original CSI is brilliant and Petersen was consistently one of the best things about it. (Though I'm giving love out to Marg Helgenberger's Catherine Willows too. Especially for staying.)

Posted by: VampireNomad at June 3, 2009 3:44 AM

Wentworth Miller- Prison Break

I used to be against series and never thought much of them. I always went for watching movies but once my bro got some Prison Break DVDS home and I was hooked! It's totally awesome and I just can't look away. I'm in love with it. Pity Prison Break is going to be stopped.

It has given me a new perspective on T.V series though and I have already started searching for something cool to watch after I finish the Prison Break series. I think I'll be going for Arrested Development.

Posted by: barf at June 3, 2009 3:57 AM

Bradley Whitford as Joshua Lyman in the West Wing. For consistency, believability, likability, and the ability to expertly balance comedy and drama.

And especially for the season 2 episode "Noel".

Does anybody else really appreciate Matthew Perry and Bradley Whitford in Studio 60? They were incredible together.

eh.

Posted by: adam at June 3, 2009 5:26 AM

Peter Krause in Six Feet Under. Even though the majority of the actors were simply outstanding in how good they were, Krause's character, Nate Fisher was consistently excellent, funny, sympathetic and heartbreaking. Every time I watch those final episodes, it shatters me in that I feel like I've lost my brother or my best friend. Powerful stuff.

Posted by: Kamikaze Feminist at June 3, 2009 6:30 AM

I third the Diana Rigg love.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at June 3, 2009 6:53 AM

Michael Chiklis as Vic Mackey in The Shield. The man issues such raw fury in this role it's fightening.

Posted by: FabMax at June 3, 2009 7:36 AM

I can't believe no one said Michael Chiklis in "The Shield."

Posted by: RAT at June 3, 2009 7:40 AM

You beat me to it FabMax.

Posted by: RAT at June 3, 2009 7:42 AM

Ditto on Chiklis, I meant to include him and it totally slipped my mind.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at June 3, 2009 7:43 AM

Thank you Louise!

Gillian Anderson from The X-Files no ifs, ands or buts.

Posted by: Agent Scully at June 3, 2009 7:44 AM

Helen Mirren as Jane Tennyson in Prime Suspect.

Robby Coltrane as Fitz in Cracker.

The only American series currently working at those levels is Breaking Bad, which is amazing.

Posted by: clocker at June 3, 2009 8:08 AM

Alison Janney in West Wing, hands down. Watching it the first time round, Josh was always my favourite. Now he strikes me an asshole (albeit brilliant), even with Whitford's genius performance. Leo and Toby were amazing too, but I just saw Janney on Broadway in 9 to 5 (she sings and dances!), and I'm kinda sorta madly in love with her now.

Runner-up: Tom Baker in Doctor Who. Listen, he's not even my favourite, but show some respect. The man defined the role.

Posted by: Sarah at June 3, 2009 8:24 AM

William Shatner as DENNY CRANE on Boston Legal.

He played Kirk longer, but Kirk wasn't really a good role. Denny Crane was funny and outrageous and the Shat played the hell out of him.

Posted by: BWeaves at June 3, 2009 8:29 AM

I have to agree with everyone who said Peter Falk in Columbo, and Shatner and Nimoy in Star Trek. I can't imagine Star Trek without either of them. Shatner because he will always be Kirk to me, and Nimoy because I think I have a thing for Vulcans.

Posted by: Tracy at June 3, 2009 8:29 AM

Still young, but how about Devito at Frank Reynolds in Sunny. He is unstoppable.

Posted by: dre at June 3, 2009 8:29 AM

clocker, I can't believe I forgot Coltrane! Mirren's fabulous too, but I've always preferred Cracker as a show. Only knowing him as Hagrid before watching that blew me away. There's a line he says in that, about suicide: "It's a bomb under the kitchen table," meaning no one in the family is safe from the effects. Something about that delivery - very few things in art have ever struck me so much.

Posted by: Sarah at June 3, 2009 8:29 AM

Bazillionth for the entire casts of Deadwood, Rome, The Sopranos, and Six Feet Under. Jeezus, I miss when HBO was awesome.

Also, add me to votes for Hugh Laurie, John C. McGinley, Kyle MacLachlan, Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny, David Tennant, Donald Faison, Carroll O'Connor, Tom Selleck, Nathan Fillion and Adam Baldwin.

Hows about JACK FUCKING BAUER people????

Posted by: dammitjanet at June 3, 2009 8:31 AM

The show was/is a bit shit, but Billie Piper as Hannah/Belle in Secret Diary of a Call Girl kind of knocks me out. Mostly because I manage not to think of her as Rose in it and that's a pretty big achievment considering how many times I've watched Doctor Who

Given that, David Tennant sort of goes without saying...

Posted by: rach at June 3, 2009 9:21 AM

Phil Hartman and Stephen Root as Bill McNeal and Jimmy James, respectively. Because, both of those roles are so beautifully fleshed out right from the beginning of the series, and honestly can anyone imagine any other actors in them? I thought not.

Gillian Anderson as Scully is a given, I think.

Also, one that I don't believe has been mentioned, but deserves to be: Jason Segel as Nick Andopolis on Freaks and Geeks. A big part of what made that character so real and so painfully endearing was the performance.

Posted by: Tori at June 3, 2009 9:30 AM

- Hugh Laurie as Greg House
- James Spader and William Shatner as Alan Shore and Denny Crane
- Victor Garber as Jack Bristow
- Matthew Perry as Matt Albie
- Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer

and last but not least, Hugh Jackman as Nicky Fontana in Viva Laughlin. (Too soon?)

Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers.
Kristin Bell as Veronica Mars.
The Entire cast of BSG(who even thinks of it as a reboot/make of the series? It IS the series).
Six Feet Under cast(too hard to pick the best out of them but they are the Fishers, no doubt at all in my mind).
Jennifer Gardner as Sidney Bristow.
Michael C. Hall as Dexter.
Hugh Laurie as House.
Ellen Muth as George Lass.
Caroline Dhavernas as Jaye Tyler.(though George and Jaye are arguably the same character)

Posted by: Angelmonster at June 3, 2009 9:59 AM

The cast of MASH. Although I'd single out Alan Alda for Hawkeye.

So hard to choose, but:

Comedy: Steve Carell, Michael Scott-The Office
Drama: Ian McShane, Al Swearengen-Deadwood
Animated: Dan Castellanetta, Homer-The Simpsons

But man, John Spencer as Leo in The West Wing and James Gandolfini in The Sopranos are right up there.

Brad Whitford, Allison Janney and John Spencer on THE WEST WING

Ian McShane on DEADWOOD

Lauren Ambrose on Six Feet Under

Hugh Laurie on HOUSE MD

Alec Baldwin on 30 ROCK

H. Jon Benjamin on HOME MOVIES

Betty White as Rose Nylund on the Golden Girls, hands down. Been watching the re-runs that have been airing near-constantly in the wake of Bea Arthur's death and I'm discovering anew what a comic GENIUS Betty is, was, and will always be.

"Blanche, I don't think you realize how powerful sex is. Once, Charlie and I did it till the cows came home! Of course, I was wearing a bell."

Posted by: Jessica at June 3, 2009 10:26 AM

The casts of Friday Night Lights (especially Saracen) and Arrested Development (especially Buster), obviously.

Also:
-Claire Danes as Angela Chase of MSCL (When I first watched the show it felt like she was playing the character of, well, me.)
-Jason Segel as Nick on Freaks and Geeks
-Krisin Chenoweth as Olive on Pushing Up Daisies (especially when she was paired with the aunts, or Emerson Cod)
-Enrico Colantoni as Keith Mars...and Jason Dohring as Logan Echolls (I love how they gradually were able to flip his character from one you hated to one you are really rooting for)...and Kristen Bell as Veronica Mars...actually, just the whole cast of VM I guess.

BENJAMIN Motherfucking LINUS. Why Michael Emerson hasn't been given every Emmy available and a gold plated pony for this role I will never understand. It's pure genius.

Posted by: MG at June 3, 2009 10:58 AM

Woody Harrelson as Woody, Cheers
Michael C Hall as David Fisher, 6Ft Under
and for that matter, Rachel Griffiths as "crazy-ass-Brenda"
Bob Newhart on both Bob Newhart Show and Newhart
Okay, Kelsey Grammer as Frasier...
And WHO could omit the lovely Joan Collins as Alexis Carrington Colby Dexter etc etc on Dynasty?????

Posted by: artgal1990 at June 3, 2009 11:33 AM

I'm desperately late to the party here, but have to weigh in with Dennis Franz as Andy Sipowitz...absolutely brilliant, hands down - the writing on NYPD Blue never faltered and he played that character with total conviction. I loved Ian McShane as Al Swearingen, and suspect, if Deadwood had run as long as Blue, he'd have been a strong contender, but Franz gets my vote.

Posted by: angelbabe at June 3, 2009 12:08 PM

God, how could I choose only one? Arrgghhh! So I won't....

Ian McShane, Deadwood.
John Simm for Life on Mars.
Philip Glenister, ditto.
Entire cast of West Wing.
Entire cast of BSG.
Nick Brendon, Buffy (he didn't get to be powerful or anything, but I thought he was consistently great).
Entire cast of FNL.
The Shat in Boston Legal.
James Spader, ditto.
Jensen Ackles in Supernatural (I know! - but seriously, he can act too).
Bradley Whitford and Matthew Perry in Studio 60
Michael C Hall in Dexter.
Dennis Franz, NYPD Blue.

...... honestly, I could go on for ever. I know there's a lot of crap on TV, but I think we've also been blessed with some damn fine shows and performances!

Posted by: Tarn at June 3, 2009 12:33 PM

Not that there weren't other gems in this show, but these two really deserve special mention:

Peter Jurasik as Londo Mollari (Babylon 5)
Andreas Katsulas as G'Kar (same)

And because I can't help my girl-crush...

Claudia Black as Aeryn Sun
Claudia Black as Vala

Two very different characters, both given such life by that splendid woman.

I'd say the whole cast of BSG and of Firefly, but...I still haven't seen all of the former, and the latter might not have been long enough to qualify as long-running. :P

Posted by: Foxeye at June 3, 2009 1:14 PM

Ooh, definitely Ben Linus. I was going to say Michael Emerson, but since Lost is still playing I didn't think it would count as a 'series long' performance. But he's definitely the best villain on TV. Hands down.

mightygodking: Okay, so I am going to show off for a minute here. I know and am friends with the person who authored the "in case of emergency" amendment; he also created Title IX and got the voting age lowered to 18. He is an amazing man and a key mentor for me - and we joked about how silly WW had gotten when it pulled that whole shenanigans. Not necessarily from the strict legal side, but from the political side.

Several of us who were here in DC during Clinton (and are back now, yeah!) joked that none of us could afford to dress as well as they all did on WW, but we certainly thought we were just as smart ;).

There's enough real craziness at the White House and Congress that you don't need to go off the rails.

"Andre Royo as Bubbles in The Wire"

Yes, yes, yes. It is damn near impossible to isolate outstanding performances on that show, but his is one of them. Season after season, he was just fantastic.

I'm intrigued by the Carrell/Gervais distinctions. I have to agree that Gervais may do the better job in that he is far, far more uncomfortable to watch than Carrell. He drags you right into that muck with him and, as an earlier poster pointed out, his gestures are just perfect. I think Carrell does a great job and I adore the show, but Gervais has it down, down, down.

Posted by: samantha t at June 3, 2009 2:36 PM

Clancy Brown as Brother Justin in Carnivale and Michael K. Williams as Omar in The Wire. You could pick two or three people from The Wire.

And, in the BBC spirit, I'll also nominate Steve Coogan as Alan Partridge. Simply brilliant.

Posted by: Cassandra at June 3, 2009 4:36 PM

I just remembered something:

Marg Helgenberger fucking ROCKED THE HOUSE on China Beach.

And yeah, Polly Walker was the best thing about Rome -- and even though Kevin McKidd as Lucius Vorenus does deserve a spot on the list, so does Ray Stevenson as Titus Pullo, and I haven't yet seen his name. So I'm naming him now.

And I wish to fuck someone would give that man a decent job, instead of slotting him into a goddamned second-rate action sequel. He's earned better than that shit.

How could no one say Ted Knight on the MTM show? He was a comedic genius.

Others (I know some were said before)

John Spencer on The West Wing - My favorite character on my favorite show ever, he was a rock and I was sad when I heard he had died in the middle of a season.

Dennis Franz and Jimmy Smits on NYPD Blue - Caruso was really good, but only for one season.

Jeffrey Donovan and Bruce Campbell on Burn Notice

All of the Golden Girls

Ed O'Neill on Married With Children

Posted by: Rubble44 at June 4, 2009 4:52 AM

FUCK RIGHT the Golden Girls.

And I know it wasn't on for that long, but Bill Paxton in Big Love- he always looked exactly what a dude with three wives and 4.2 million children SHOULD look: tired, rumpled, and desperate. AND he showed his heiny, like, all the time. (YAY BILL PAXTON'S HEINY!)

Big Ups to whomever said Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock. For reals.

Michael C. Hall as Dexter on Dexter

I don't know what everyone else is smokin' but I'll vote for Martin Sheen over Allison Janney on West Wing anyday. Not that Allison wasn't good, but she wasn't the glue, you know?

Colbert as Colbert, clearly.

To throw in a new show, I say--
Nelsan Ellis as Lafayette Reynolds on True Blood.
-- he is one of the better acted characters who I've seen in the thousands of hours (hundreds of thousands?) of TV that I've watched in my lifetime. Easily a scene-stealer.
