The Emma Watson Naked Photo Countdown Was Actually a Matryoshka Doll Of Hoaxes
Follow me here, OK?
Over the weekend, Emma Watson gave a wonderful speech to the United Nations on feminism and equality for women. The world rejoiced. Everyone gave each other high fives and people danced in the streets.
Then, allegedly, the prostate boogers over on 4chan got totally up in arms over the notion of Emma Watson speak to equality of gender that they threatened to release nude photos of her hacked from her phone. Do nude photos of Emma Watson exist? WHO CARES. NOT IMPORTANT.
The important thing here is that 4chan allegedly threatened to reveal those nude photos, and allegedly created a site, EmmaWatsonYoureNext.com, with a countdown clock counting down the seconds until those photos were made available. A lot of shitty dudes on the Internet planned their lives around that countdown clock, too.
Only, it wasn’t 4chan behind it after all (although, there were plenty of 4channers who wished they were behind it). Allegedly, it was a social media firm called Rantic, who had created the site in order to lure people there in order to shut down 4chan with a ridiculous plea to President Obama, not that President Obama could do a damn thing.
Only, there’s another catch! Rantic doesn’t exist, either! Boom! Hoaxed! The Rantic site was created as an experiment by the serial hoaxers, according to Business Insider:
Rantic Marketing is a fake company run by a gang of prolific internet spammers used to quickly capitalize on internet trends for page views. The group goes by a variety of different names. Collectively, they’re known as SocialVEVO … Previously, Rantic Marketing was the source of rumors that the video game Grand Theft Auto V’s release for the PC had been canceled. The fake company then changed its website to make it seem it had been hacked by 4chan. There’s no evidence to suggest that 4chan ever hacked the Rantic Marketing website, and instead it appears that the fake company modified the site itself for publicity.
Here’s a visual demonstration of the Emma Watson hoax.
In the meantime, let us not allow it to get lost here, but Emma Watson gave one hell of a fine speech. Can we all go back to dancing in the streets now?
