Rik Mayall Was Cut Out of 'Harry Potter' For Being Too Funny

This interview with British actor and comedian Rik Mayall isn’t new, but it’s been making the rounds following his sudden death yesterday. Mayall is best known by American audiences for playing the imaginary titular role in Drop Dead Fred. He was probably known more by everyone else for his roles in Blackadder, The Young Ones, and a bunch of other British shows that I’ve never seen but I’m guessing are just as great. You know what Mayall WASN’T known for, though? Harry Potter. Because, at least according to Mayall, he was just too damn funny for that movie, and had to be cut out. He chalks this up to a win though, since getting paid NOT to be in movies sounded like his dream job.

(Skip to the 55 second mark for the Potter story.)
