Rik Mayall Was Cut Out of 'Harry Potter' For Being Too Funny

By Vivian Kane | Celebrities Are Better than You | June 10, 2014 | Comments ()

This interview with British actor and comedian Rik Mayall isn’t new, but it’s been making the rounds following his sudden death yesterday. Mayall is best known by American audiences for playing the imaginary titular role in Drop Dead Fred. He was probably known more by everyone else for his roles in Blackadder, The Young Ones, and a bunch of other British shows that I’ve never seen but I’m guessing are just as great. You know what Mayall WASN’T known for, though? Harry Potter. Because, at least according to Mayall, he was just too damn funny for that movie, and had to be cut out. He chalks this up to a win though, since getting paid NOT to be in movies sounded like his dream job.

(Skip to the 55 second mark for the Potter story.)

You...you've never seen Blackadder? OR The Young Ones?

Where I live those two are pretty much staple for the Pajiba-like crowd. I think I played my Young Ones DVDs so often even my DVD player spat them out and told me to get a damn job, hippie.

When I was a kid, me and my dad would spend our days together huddled around the tv, watching the same three things over and over. Bottom was one of those things - one of the most absurd, hilarious, violent slapstick tv shows I've ever seen. To say Rik Mayall was funny is a huge understatement. I can't even choose a clip, so I'm just gonna go with the first I found - the checkmate skit. RIP Rik.

A shame they couldn't use him as Peeves..I can easily see him as that trouble-making ghost. Be at peace Rik.
