Lea DeLaria doesn’t get talked about quite as much as some of her other Orange Is the New Black cast members, despite her excessive awesomeness and totally heartbreaking season three backstory episode.

So maybe you don’t know that Orange Is the New Black is not her only job. This is a woman with an extensive array of hats. She is (as she puts in in the interview linked to below) “an actor, a jazz singer, a stand-up comic, a writer, and a womanizer.” If you’ve ever heard her comedy, the “womanizer” bit shouldn’t surprise you, but the “jazz singer” one took me by surprise. But not only does DeLaria have a voice to f*cking kill for— she’s putting it to incredible use, with “House of David,” an album of David Bowie covers, which she positively nails.

Maybe you heard about this last month when she turned Conan into a human bass for her rendition of “Fame.”

You can hear her full “Fame” here, and here’s her take on “Modern Love.”

As DeLaria says in that Conan clip up there, this isn’t some celebrity actor half-assed vanity project. She’s been singing jazz since she was a kid. Here’s a very cool interview she did with The Frame in which she talks about how she got her start, and how her dad taught her to go against the female jazz singer stereotype and “sing from the balls.” There’s also a bit of her “Rebel Rebel” at the end, around the six minute mark.

(If you don’t see that interview pop up, you can listen to it here. Autostart audio in that link, BTW.)

As a bonus, it’s not on this album, but her “Black Hole Sun” is f*cking boss.

House of David comes out next week. I’d recommend keeping an eye on DeLaria’s Facebook page.
