LONG NATIONAL NIGHTMARE OVER! Lupita Nyong'o's Dress Probably Recovered

GOOD NEWS, EVERYONE! Lupita Nyong’o’s stolen Oscar gown may have been recovered in the same hotel it was stolen from! The dress in question was stashed under a sink (in a garment bag, for any other fashion enthusiasts who were on the verge of a small heart attack there). The weird thing is that so far reports just say that the dress recovered “strongly resembles” the stolen dress, which seems unnecessarily cagey. It’s a pretty distinct dress, and since the Oscars were only a week ago it seems unlikely that anyone’s had time to knock it off.

Perhaps, though, they’re hedging because reports are starting to come out that the pearls on the dress are fake. this report from yesterday indicates that the dress found WAS the Oscar dress, and that it was returned after the thieves had pearls from the dress tested for authenticity. Which is interesting, because it would seem to imply that the dress was only stolen for the value of the pearls even though its now also worth something as an Oscar gown worn by a famous actress. I would not be surprised if the pearls were fake, even freshwater and cultured pearls are incredibly expensive and that dress was covered in thousands of small pearls, never mind the larger ones on the bodice detail. Or maybe some were fake and some weren’t, who knows. But if they ARE fake, than perhaps the reports switched from “the dress was found” to “a dress CLOSELY RESEMBLING the dress was found” in order to give Calvin Klein an out or to avoid charges of libel for publishing that the pearls were fake. At least we know this; none of us are confused as to what color the dress is and thank god for that.
