The cynical among us will always assume that, when a celebrity has his or her come to Jesus moment, that it’s probably been orchestrated by a PR professional of some sort. But in those cases, you typically get empty apologies and a lot of platitudes.

But here’s something strange: Justin Bieber — that obnoxious little shit who has been wreaking havoc on the Internet the last year and a half by pretending to be a gangsta porn star — is admitting that it was all a put on. That it’s not really who he is. That in reality, he’s a momma’s boy — that he is actually who we think he is, and not who he has been pretending to be.

He released a video confessional on his Facebook page (below), but here’s the full text, and he actually sounds sober and sincere:

“I just wanted to make a video because I wanted to express how I feel right now. Today, I was on Ellen and it was a lot of fun. She’s amazing, it was her birthday, but I was really nervous. I think I was nervous because I was afraid of what people are thinking about about me right now.

It’s been a minute since I’ve been in a public appearance, and I didn’t want to come off arrogant or conceited or basically how I’ve been acting the past year and a half, I’m not who I was pretending to be.

Why I say I was ‘pretending’ is often we pretend to be something we’re not as a cover up of what we’re truly feeling inside. And there were a lot of feelings going on in there. Just being young and growing up in this business is hard. Just growing up in general is hard.”

I just felt awkward up there. I felt like people were judging me, and I really want people to know how much I care, how much I care about people, and how I’m not that person to say, ‘I don’t give a f*ck,’ you know? I’m not that kid. I’m a person who genuinely cares. And although what’s happened in the past has happened, I just want to make the best impression on people and be kind and loving and gentle and soft. And although people can call me a ‘softy,’ that’s how my mom raised me.”

Here’s the video:

And in a good PR move, he also appeared on the Ellen show to talk about his confession to break the ice, so to speak, for the video. He also talked about why he’s allowing himself to be roasted on Comedy Central:

“I think it’s just cool to be able to laugh at yourself so. I’ve done some things. That might not of been the greatest,” he said. “I just want to be able to ya know. And kind of just kind own up to some of the things.”

Has the kid turned a corner? I dunno. Maybe? Let’s see how it shakes out over the next few days and weeks, and see if he actually means what he says. If so, it may be one of the first ever successful attempts to pull out of the child-star tailspin.
