After just over a year together, Jennifer Lawrence and her mother! director Darren Aronofsky have split up, news that was confirmed by People Magazine. The pair met on the set of the divisive movie and kept things pretty private, even while on the promotional trail together. Aside from a candid moment in her recent Vogue profile, Lawrence really didn’t talk about the romance, although she has always kept her private life relatively quiet given her status as one of the most famous women alive.

Most of the gossip around the relationship came from the age difference — 22 years, which is how much older she tends to be forced to play in her choice of roles, anyway — the power dynamics between director and actor, and of course, the controversial scenes of the movie they made together. Suffice to say, for those who haven’t seen mother!, Lawrence was put through the wringer by the auteur, which raised a few eyebrows. There were the rumoured screaming matches on set, with one now deleted Facebook post from an extra who said, ‘Swallowing the amount of crap and yelling [Lawrence] has to take in and redoing a perfect performance over and over a hundred times for a fussy boss.’ While filming, Lawrence also hyperventilated so hard that she cracked a rib, something Aronofsky told her to use for the scene. Aronofsky’s relationship as a ‘tough’ director is not a recent revelation (and frankly, I’m bored of screaming dictators with cameras being called ‘difficult’ as some sort of euphemistic plea to respect the art).

This’ll probably make promoting the film for Oscar chances a bit awkward, but never fear, it’s a busy year and mother! may not even make the cut.
