On Monday, singer Chris Brown was detained on potential charges of aggravated rape and drug violations in Paris. He is still in custody along with two other men, believed to be Brown’s bodyguard and a friend, while police investigate the accusations and determine whether to file charges (they have 2 days to make their decision).

On the night of January 15th, a 24-year-old woman alleges that Brown raped her in a suite at the Mandarin Oriental hotel after the pair met in a nightclub earlier in the evening. And this accusation is just the latest in a long string of violent behavior and legal trouble for Brown, who previously assaulted his then-girlfriend Rihanna on the night before the 2009 Grammy Awards and got 5 years probation. Variety has a detailed refresher on Brown’s other assorted batshittery, from the time he threw a chair at a window after he was asked about the Rihanna incident on Good Morning America to the time he was ejected from rehab for violent behavior, and honestly I’d forgotten most of it because there’s so much. Did you remember that his probation was revoked after an alleged hit-and-run?! And in the summer of 2016, not only did his own manager sue him on charges of assault and battery, but Brown was later arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon in an incident that involved an honest-to-jeebus police standoff.

Look, I’m not going to detail all of Brown’s assorted anger management courses and entourage dust-ups and restraining orders and thrown punches, because that’s all on public record. I’m more interested in the fact that it has almost been a decade since Chris Brown assaulted Rihanna, and earlier this month it was announced that he had signed an impressive new license deal with record label RCA, ahead of his upcoming album. Apparently, the deal makes Brown one of the youngest artists to ever own his own master recordings, which is a huge deal — and also means the man who did (*flaps hands*) ALL THAT is still getting rewarded. I wonder if Rihanna owns her own masters? I wonder if this rape accusation will impact his deal at all?

I realize that right now this is just an accusation, and formal charges haven’t even been filed against Brown. But considering all the violent behavior Brown has exhibited and been charged with in the past, I feel like it’s worth pointing out that studies have shown that physical and sexual violence are often linked. The World Health Organization notes in their 2002 report on violence and health that:

“In many countries a substantial proportion of women experiencing physical violence also experience sexual abuse. In Mexico and the United States, studies estimate that 40-52% of women experiencing physical violence by an intimate partner have also been sexually coerced by that partner.”

Anyway, fuck Chris Brown.
