Because I Need These To Be Lies Like I Need Oxygen or Booze

There was a simple time not so long ago when we thought our precious ’80s movies were safe, protected even, from the remake machine. “They’re too recent,” we said. “They’re not even stale yet.”

This has all changed with the success of that creepy Karate Kid movie. And, yes, it was creepy. Children shouldn’t be able to do split kicks, and that’s a fact.

Rumors of a Sixteen Candles remake have been whispered, even shouted, for almost ten years now. That Footloose revamp has been in the works for years and I’m fairly certain it’s never actually going to happen. A number of vanity projects are postulated every day and never come to fruition.

These are the things I have to remind myself when I read news like this: “Justin Bieber to star in Bill and Ted Remake.”

Allegedly, the tiny boychild with the stupid variation on the kicky Dorothy Hamill haircut, will portray Ted Logan, possibly because with a little pomade, the hair isn’t all that different. “Insiders” (read: Justin Bieber’s mom) say the struggle lies in casting Bill S. Preston, Esq.

Again, lord-willing, this is a rumor. Not just because it’s a movie that I enjoyed in my youth, but because the Bill and Ted movies are a time capsule. They are very much The ’80s. The idea of the lovable slacker is a relic of that decade and the early-mid ’90s. Unless they make our heroes lovable ghetto-affected rich white kids whose balls haven’t dropped yet, I don’t see what Justin Bieber can really do here.

Of course, I’m mainly diatribing about this because of recent rumors that The Scott Baio of Tomorrow wants to remake Back to the Future. This rumor has been squashed by writer Bob Gale, which keeps me from the screaming and night terrors, but if it ever comes true, know that I will set myself on fire in protest.

Look, I don’t get all up in arms about remakes like a lot of us. I wasn’t super opposed to the Let the Right One In remake, though I loved the original as much as everyone else, and I tend to not mind when older films are remade because of the truth that this remake does not affect the original film and its greatness. But the idea of remaking movies that belong in one certain time period, a time period that has passed and now only exists inside these movies, really irritates me.

Also, I will have to implore you to remove yourself from my lawn.

And they're replacing George Carlin with Kanye West..

YOU SHUT YOUR DIRTY MOUTH, SCHAEFFER!

Did anyone see Bieber's acting on CSI? It was like watching someone who can't act whatsoever trying to pretend to be someone else. He was so bad I can't even apply a proper metaphor. It's like he was openly mocking the producers for casting him. If he goes anywhere NEAR a "Back to the Future" reboot, I'll travel back to 1990 and sterilize his parents. The "entertainment" vaccuum in the present will force teenage girls to take over the world, but I'd rather watch 'round the clock Texting Championships on Oxygen, Jr. than watch Michael J. Fox's shaky corpse get violated like that.

Phone rings. Keanu answers.
Manager: Keanu, babe. It's Morty!
Keanu: Oh. Hey, Morty.
Manager: So listen. Neo. Babe. We got this great new script rolling out for Bill and Ted 3D. They go on an adventure across the universe, break through the 4th dimention of time and into the 5th dimention of alternative realities.
Keanu: Woah.
Manager: Yeah, it's pretty cool.
Keanu: Well, I don't know Morty. I've got a lot on my plate right now. They're just about to start filming the M4trix, and I don't know if I'll have the time.
Manager: But, Keanu...
Keanu: Plus, that's in my past, Morty. I did that when I was a kid.
Manager: Yeah, but Keanu...
Keanu: And you know I'm trying to focus on my music these days, Morty. Rock is my life, now! [unconsciously air guitars]
Manager: Yeah, but Keanu listen! They're going to remake it with Justin Beiber if you don't do a third.
Keanu: ...
Morty: Keanu?
Keanu: ...no way...
Manager: Yeah. I know. What the fuck, seriously.
Keanu: Mail me the contract, Morty. No! Fed-ex me the contact, Morty. Overnight that shit.
Morty: [air guitars]
Keanu: [air guitars]

I think he'd be perfect in the Hillary Swank role for a remake of Boys Don't Cry.

Schaeffer,
Come on. Kanye would obviously be the black dude sittin' on the wall in the room with the giant golden Ring Pop descending from the ceiling.

I just love the idea that, if any of this is true, they've already decided that Bieber would be Ted. Like they're sitting in a room going, "Justin, this could be huge. But we gotta make sure you play Ted and not Bill. I know you don't know who Alex Winter is, but trust me. If my logic holds, if the same stuff happens in the remake, the same stuff will happen in real life after the remake...I'm a fuckin' genius."

Mark my words, they will be able to tweet through time, and this will be a plot point.

I generally stay away from remakes. I saw Star Trek because that is not dear to me. For some reason I was attracted to A Nightmare on Elm Street, but then I realized I liked the original, so I'll never see that one. But this one...this one hurts.

Yo, Bieber! Imma let you finish...but the Wyld Stallyns are the greatest band of all time. OF ALL TIME!

(Aaaand I hate myself for resurrecting that.)

Posted by: shanmarie at October 19, 2010 2:07 PM

Yeah, they'd replace Carlin with Dane Motherfucking Cook, not Kanye, because apparently I haven't been able to enduce a full-blown, coma-inducing stroke on my own.

Just.
DIED.

From laughter. Holy fuck, that's some hilariously twisted genius.

I am sad to report that the Footloose remake is shooting in Atlanta right now with some chick from Dancing With the Stars and Andie McDowell. I can smell it from here actually. blech.

Posted by: Neal at October 19, 2010 2:20 PM

Neal, if we're lucky there'll be an altercation with The Walking Dead during filming and Footloose will end up with a much more literal meaning.

I don't have an issue with the idea of remaking those movies. I have issue with remaking them with a Shelf Life of 18 Months pop star with no acting experience. Or does he have acting experience? I have no idea. Happily my exposure to this creature is currently limited to Pajiba, weirdly enough. My kids watch Disney channel, but other than iCarly and Wizards of Wavery Place have little interest in the rest. Given my 10 year old daughter's hatred for Miley Cyrus I can't imagine she would want to listen to this guy thing's singing either. Is he a Disney character? Why is he here? Does Mars Need Hair Product? That picture you posted makes me want to bully him in the face with a bag of hammers.

Does Mars Need Hair Product?

I believe you're confused.
That was an episode of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.
And it was skin care cream.

If they wanna remake BILL & TED, they need to keep George Carlin in that same role. Sure, he's dead, but I'm sure he could still do a better job than Dane Cook or Kanye West.

Bob Gale's comment about not tampering with the past? Delicious.

Yes, I agree. It's a very demure shade of pink.

It's probably bubblegum flavoured.

For some reason that header pic could be on the album cover for "Anne Murray: The Early Years" and not look out of place. It even has that shimmer that early 1970's albums seemed to have.

Exactly what some really good cd players for kids? My cousin is 5 years old and for christmas I'd like to see to buy her a music, she loves my nano but I think it would difficult for her to apply it. Are there any good ones for kids?
