Last month, Johnny Depp sued Amber Heard for $50 million over her op-ed in the Washington Post where she speaks out as a victim of domestic abuse, but never names Johnny Depp as her accuser. While Pajiba’s Kate Hudson had an excellent theory that Depp filed the lawsuit because he’s a d*ck bag who’s trying to use the recent media narrative around Jussie Smollet to his advantage, there’s a very simple explanation for why Depp would be stupid enough to dredge all of this up:

He’s running out of cash.

It’s one thing to blow through money when you know studios can’t wait to watch you derail a production by showing up drunk and needing an earpiece to say your lines. But when you’re franchise poison — How’d that work out for you, Joanne? — apparently that’s when it’s time to squeeze your ex for $50 million and expect her not to fight back? Not happening.

Thanks to Depp’s lawsuit, Heard’s lawyers are bringing out all of the allegations including a 2016 deposition video that never saw the light of day thanks to the former couple’s infamous settlement.

The Blast reports:

In the 2-minute snippet from the deposition, a clearly upset Heard begins to describe the fight that led up to her striking the actor.

“He was hitting me … hard and repeatedly,” Heard explained, adding, “I was screaming. Security walks in and they don’t do anything about it.”

The actress is then cut off by Depp’s attorney from off camera, who claims to just want a “yes or no” answer to the question that was asked.

Heard’s lawyer then jumps in to defend his client and the entire room of lawyers erupts before the moderator calms everyone down.

Heard is then asked again if she has ever hit Depp, and she continues with the story, claiming her sister ran down to help and admitting, “I am protective over my baby sister.”

“He was about to push my sister down the stairs,” the actress emotionally explains, adding, “When he laid hands on her I don’t know what I did, but I know I jumped in between the action that I saw could lead to a fatal accident with my sister.”

Heard’s lawyers also produced photographs of bald spots in Heard’s scalp and excessive property damage from Depp’s alleged drug and booze benders. In other words, this situation was a helluva sleeping dog for Depp not to let lie.

As for his defense? Stop me if you’ve heard this before: She’s lying, she’s the real abuser, this is #MeToo run amok, blah blah blah. If you really want to read that horsesh*t, it’s in both of the Blast links above. Knock yourself out. As for me, I’m going to err towards the likelihood that a wealthy, narcissistic male who indulges his every excess becomes an abusive prick when he’s loaded. Call me crazy, but that sounds a tad more realistic than Amber Heard fabricating reams of evidence so she can… *checks notes*donate her entire divorce settlement to charity.

That’s the opposite of gold-digging, you Jack Sparrow-loving nards.
