Don’t worry, everyone, the world isn’t as terrible as we thought! As a follow-up to yesterday’s post about Kate Mulgrew lending her voice to a documentary about geocentrism made by a wretched piece of fecal dribble, we have this post from Mulgrew’s Facebook page:

Hooray! She’s not dumb or terrible! Only maybe not as discerning about her choices of roles as one would hope. You can also read that Slate article here. In it, Lawrence Krauss says his participation in the film was unwilling, that his clips were pulled from stock footage or other productions. He also dismisses the whole mess as a waste of time and energy.

So, for those of you who are scandalized that a film narrated by a well-known TV celebrity with some well-known scientists promotes geocentricism, here is my suggestion: Let’s all stop talking about it from today on… If others bring up the film, the best thing we can do is tell them to not to waste their time or money either watching it or talking about it. Maybe then it will quickly disappear into the dustbin of history, where it belongs.

While it’s great to hear that neither of these two knew what they were a part of, I disagree that instances like these aren’t worth talking about. Yes, maybe Krauss’ participation was unknowing, but for Kate Mulgrew to lend her voice and thereby her credence as a well-known and respected actor to a movie that she didn’t take the time to fully look into is a mistake on her part. For an actor of her stature to accept a paycheck from these people, it essentially serves as validation of the project. So, no, we don’t have to ignore that. She is a public figure with sway over her fanbase. Her narration may have gotten people to pay money to see this movie. So deserves to be called out, and hopefully in the future she’ll be more discerning about her choices of what projects she’ll give her space captain stamp of approval to.
