Assessing Kevin Bacon: Six Degrees of Underrated

By Agent Bedhead | Posted Under Career Assessments | Comments (30)

Subject: Kevin Bacon, 52-year old American actor and musician

Date of Assessment: June 1, 2011

Positive Buzzwords: Underrated, intense, villain

Negative Buzzwords: Typecast, Madoff

The Case: Horror fans will remember Kevin Bacon’s first mainstream turn in Friday the 13th, but it was really Footloose that catapulted him to the walls of teenage girls everywhere and then (not too much longer afterwards) ceremoniously dropped him in the gutter. Through sheer talent and a willingness to appear in some really awful films as well as a handful of really good ones, Kevin Bacon has somehow survived through multiple decades of a Hollywood career. Just recently, he has also had the dubious pleasure of emerging as one of Bernie Madoff’s victims. While Bacon admits that the experience has indeed affected some of his decisions on what work to accept, he is also a realist and admits that, sometimes, an actor just needs the work. Further, he doesn’t feel that he suffers from the “disease of specialness.” In that regard, I can accept that Kevin Bacon has gladly accepted money for participating in his fair share of trashy movies over the years; at least he’s not deluded into thinking that everything he touches is so-called “high art.”

Besides, a man who unwittingly inspired the “Six Degrees Of Kevin Bacon” trivia game and harnessed its power to create the SixDegrees.org charity can’t be all bad, right? Right.

Admittedly, I hold a special place in my little black heart for Flatliners, and I thought he was brilliant in Wild Things although the full frontal factor might have something to do with that sentiment. Still, the guy looks a bit like Willem Dafoe, so give me the benefit of the doubt when I assure you that it’s (mostly) his acting that captivates. Just a year ago, Bacon won his first Golden Globe for the HBO movie, Taking Chance, so he’s finally getting some recognition in the talent department as well.
Other crowd favorites include Death Sentence, Murder in the First, Tremors, Mystic River, A Few Good Men, Apollo 13, JFK, and Stir of Echoes. He’s also tried his hand at a few comedies — Planes, Trains & Automobiles, She’s Having a Baby, and The Air Up There — but Kevin Bacon isn’t much of a comedic actor at all. Rather, he excels as both a protagonist and (especially as) a villain in dramatic films. Some of his best performances have been as the bad guy — Hollow Man The River Wild Sleepers Criminal Law, and The Woodsman.

While it seems perfunctory and inadequate for me to summarize his resumé in just a few short paragraphs, it’s enough to say that Kevin Bacon is exactly how he appears; that is, he is a fine actor who has appeared in many solidly entertaining movies. Even better, he doesn’t dwell upon his image or try to be something that he isn’t, and his level of humility will keep him going through at least a few more decades of pretty good (but not quite great) movies too.

Prognosis: While I’m convinced that the sociopath Bacon played in Super was probably a character that he liked in the script, I still think he said yes to the movie itself because of his compromised state of mind due to the Madoff fallout. In addition, Bacon might very well give a fine show as the villainous Sebastian Shaw in this weekend’s X-Men: First Class (as Sebastian Shaw), but he probably accepted that role for the money as well. Hopefully, he’ll soon feel free to accept roles on a more selective basis too because he’s a very solid dramatic actor. If anything, oue hope shall stay alive due to his involvement in the very promising looking Crazy, Stupid Love. If nothing else, he can always continue to rock out in concert as one of the Bacon Brothers.

You just got Bacon'd!

He's great in The Big Picture, a fine Christopher Guest film. Boy, do I miss J.T. Walsh!

Posted by: DenG at June 1, 2011 2:21 PM

but he probably accepted that role for the money as well

It's a big budget summer movie. It's the kind of role a actor works their entire life to get just paid for - Gene Hackman as Luthor? Michael Gough, then Michael Caine as Alfred?

When Michael Caine was asked about Jaws 3D, he always pointed at the house it paid for.

So, yeah, I hope Bacon did it for the money.

Just saw Super the other night.... OK, I will take that as Kevin's excuse for being in the movie, what about Liv Tyler and Ellen Page?

Also, I hated Kevin Bacon for years after seeing Sleepers - he was such a good creepy asshole in that, I couldn't help but hate him in real life too!

Friday the 13th? I always thought his first mainstream role was in Animal House-"Thank you sir, may I have another?"

Posted by: Mrcreosote at June 1, 2011 2:34 PM

I thought his first mainstream movie was Animal House? Or am I misremembering that?

He's a talented guy, who seems like a decent human being with a sense of humor about himself (those Comcast commercials he did recently were hilarious). He has my support.

Also, he totally cracked me up in that Logitech commercial (yes, I did have to look up what he was actually advertising in that)!

Posted by: Laura at June 1, 2011 2:36 PM

@Mrcreosote: great minds think alike?

@Laura: Yes, his performance in Sleepers was so disgusting it was hard to forget when seeing him in something else. That movie could have been SO GOOD were it not filmed during the period when people thought Jason Patric was a valid leading man.

STAY CALM!!! ALL IS WELL!!!!

The man can't help but give good performances in just about everything he's in. He can both lead a movie and be good or be a supporting character and be good. Wish him many more years of that.

Plus, I loved the commercials he did for Logitech last year. And yes, I spent many a late night in diners playing "Six Degrees" with drunk friends.

I saw Stir of Echoes very shortly before The Sixth Sense came out and just loved it - very chilling and creepy. After seeing The Sixth Sense I swore that they copied off Stir of Echoes. Oh well. And The Big Picture is really terrific - check it out!

I remember him before he had any film role - as Tim Werner on the Guiding Light. That IMDB listing is wrong, because he was playing that role as far back as 1978, when they were supposed to be in high school he got his ass kicked by that guy who played the Flash (John Wesley Shipp) and later by Mr. Raines (THE James Rebhorn) who kicked him out of his house for dating his daughter Beth, but it was because he was being a sicko and incestuous and OMG how do I remember all this crap? I was eight...

The omission of Animal House and Diner from this career assessment is disappointing. Certainly two of the three (with Apollo 13) best movies he ever appeared in.

Though it is true that his career took off with the Footloose role

I'm sorry, no Kevin Bacon career assessment is complete without discussion of the fact that Tremors FUCKING RULES.

"What the hell is going on? I mean, what the HELL is going on?!"

"Broke in to the wrong goddamn rec room, didn't ya you bastard!"

"We gotta do somethin'." I don't know why "we" always has to be me every damn time. We, we, we. What do I look like, an expert in worm?"

I always laugh when performers are described as being "brave" in the roles they take when that usually means they were required to be a little less beautiful than usual (Kidman in The Hours, Theron in Monster, Clooney in Syriana, etc.), but I believe Kevin Bacon was truly brave to take The Woodsman. It takes someone with a lot of confidence in his abilities to play a pedophile and be sure that he will still be loved.

Thank you! The man is a Highlander! He has been around forever!

Pyrates- Kyra Sedgewick, fire, and a pith helmet. One of the best Kevin Bacon movies ever. (DenG, I also loved The Big Picture.)

MOOSE KNUCKLE!

Where was I? Oh yes.

" . . . Bacon might very well give a fine show as the villainous Sebastian Shaw in this weekend’s X-Men: First Class (as Sebastian Shaw) . . ."

Can I file that in the Department of Redundancy Department?

I love Kevin Bacon, pure and simple. I love that Comcast commercial he did a while ago. Who says Kevin Bacon's not funny?

I'm not a serious movie kinda chick, so I haven't seen some of the more dramatic roles he's been in, but Tremors is a classic for the ages.

He came and saw a show at the theatre where my friend works, and as he walks out he goes to her "Hey thanks, that was a great show" in that Kevin Bacon voice and she said she was struck dumbass speechless.

Power of Bacon. That is all.

Posted by: Laurie at June 1, 2011 7:15 PM

Actually even one in Super was paid to scale. He took a pay cut to be in it. I like the movie and thought he was an incredible creep.

Posted by: Melody Be at June 1, 2011 8:04 PM

Damn it, everyone in Super, not even one. :(

Posted by: Melody Be at June 1, 2011 8:04 PM

That's how they git you. They're under the goddamned ground!

Hey - check this out! I found the ass end!

God I love that movie.

We got X-Men a few days ago over here, and I can assure you, this man is the best part of it.

Particularly in the prologue.

Fassybends is a close second.

She's having a Baby is one of my favorite flicks. He's very good in it and only momentarily loses the camera to a hot young Alec Baldwin. But, for me, Flatliners is still my favorite Bacon.

Posted by: jmflynny at June 1, 2011 11:17 PM

I got a goddamn plan!!

Love it too. And She's Having a Baby, which I think is the reason I still hate Alec Baldwin.

However loopy JFK may or may not be, its strength lay in the parade of strong character actors who either pulled their usual weight (Pesci) or stepped out of the parameters of their usual oeuvre (John Candy). Bacon's character rendering left me stunned while he lays out "the way things are" for Garrison in the film. I don't know who else could have pulled it off more convincingly.

"You don't know shit 'cause you never been fucked in the aaass!"

Kevin Bacon is a goddamned national treasure.

Posted by: Kala at June 2, 2011 11:02 AM

I agree with the fact that Kevin Bacon is an underrated actor. Murder in the First has always been one of my favourite movies and in my opinion, one of his best roles.
