One of the Weirdest Anomalies in Box Office History

Switch-1-375.jpg

There’s some strange things afoot at the Circle K this weekend. I’ve seen a lot of surprising and not-so-surprising box-office records in my day, but this weekend’s box-office rankings are just plain bizarre. The Expendables held on to the top spot for a second week, dropping 52 percent but nevertheless amassing enough — at $16.2 million — to keep the number one ranking. What’s weird, however, is that there is no number two movie in the rankings this week. It’s not a glitch on a single website — it’s widespread, indicated in all of the box-office reporting services. There is simply no number two film this weekend. The rankings skip from The Expendables to number three, Eat, Pray, Love ($12 million) and there’s no explanation provided for the omission.

It’s best not to question it, though. Like the box-office reporting services, I think we’ll just move along. The less said the better.

There were four new entries into the top ten this week, but none of them faired particularly well. Lottery Ticket was the highest debut of the week, landing at number four with $11.1 million, although it did have the highest per theater average of any movie in wide release this week. Just imagine how much better it might have fared if it had actually been a really good movie targeted toward black audiences. Hell, white people might have gone, opening up the demographic by a whopping 85 percent.

The other three debuts landed at sixth, seventh, and eighth, behind The Other Guys, which held on in the top five (it’s put up $88 million after three weeks, ensuring a $100 million box office). The other three debuts stunk up the joint. Piranha 3D made $10 million, the Nanny McPhee sequel scored $8.3 million, and not even Jason Bateman could counteract The Aniston problem, as The Switch debuted with a lousy $8.1 million (suck it, Alan Loeb!). That’s $12 million less than even the execrable The Bounty Hunter debuted with.

(Reviews of Piranha 3D and Nanny McPhee will be posted tomorrow.)

And, for those hoping that Scott Pilgrim vs. The World would have serious box-office legs, all hope is lost. It fell 52 percent, landing at number ten with $5 million. Better luck on Blu-Ray.

And speaking of Scott Pilgrim and its box-office performance, I neglected to announce last week’s box-office challenge winner. Neo was the big winner (followed closely by Darthcorleone). Neo: Email me your details, and your choice of an Edgar Wright, Julia Roberts, or Jason Statham DVD ($25 max).

Okaaaaay. So we're pretending it never happened? Is this for the sake of Prisco's sanity? Or your own, Dustin?

Posted by: greer at August 22, 2010 4:50 PM

Nanny McPhee came out this weekend?

Well, that's just lousy marketing. I totally would have gone to see that, but I didn't even know it was OUT.

Studio jackasses killed their own movie.

Posted by: Maryscott O'Connor at August 22, 2010 4:51 PM

And doesn't this just mean that Eat Pray Love is #2?

Posted by: Maryscott O'Connor at August 22, 2010 4:51 PM

Is this post a comment on how you feel about Vampires Suck? That is listed as the number 2 film on Box Office Mojo.

Posted by: Popcultureboy at August 22, 2010 4:51 PM

Someone didn't close their bold tag.

Posted by: thatguy at August 22, 2010 4:52 PM

Don't worry, hopefully that box office anomaly will drop off the top ten entirely next week

Posted by: Douchebag McGee at August 22, 2010 4:53 PM

"Blinded by the white, wrapped up like a douche, another Bateman in the night..."

Or something like that...

Posted by: Recondite at August 22, 2010 4:53 PM

Pupcultureboy, you clearly didn't read the review.

Posted by: A-schaef at August 22, 2010 5:08 PM

A-schaef, I read the review and didn't get the joke, sorry if I'm slow. I hadn't even heard of that movie.

Posted by: Brenton at August 22, 2010 5:20 PM

Ha! I see what you did there. Unlike another commenter, I shall not name That Which Should Not Be Encouraged, but I guess this proves that even sparkly vampire "satires" will find an audience in today's brain-dead market. Either that, or the apocalypse is here. Goddamn, I still have things to do.

And I guess you did pay attention to my comment yesterday. Now if you could only address those "You might also like" photo badges, which are still kicking your ass and taking your lunch money. And then laughing at you.

Posted by: Uriah Creep at August 22, 2010 5:26 PM

I'm disappointed in whoever went to see the Black Hole of Suck that would have been at #2.

I went and saw Scott Pilgrim last Thursday. In a way, I confirmed what I felt before it came out: it's a decent movie, full of cute jokes, but when you scratch deeper, you find a pretty hollow thing. There's zero connection with Ramona and Scott's relationship, which makes all the fighting of the exes (another unexplained phenomena) pointless.

Still I'd love to see Ed Wright direct an action movie. He seems to have a better eye for action than Tarantino, Smith or any of the major geek directors.

Posted by: Fredo at August 22, 2010 5:43 PM

They're all number 2.

Posted by: jinc at August 22, 2010 5:49 PM

Wait. The Human Centipede: The First Segment surged in the box office to number 2? Or is there a new film that shouldn't exist but does and people try like hell to ignore it?

Cause I can't think of any other film that came out this week in the quasi-horror genre that would be number 2. Nope. Not a one. Is it Splice? 2-D screenings of Piranha 3-D (they exist)?

Posted by: Robert at August 22, 2010 6:16 PM

I think we should go all the way and rid ourselves of the number 2 altogether. In fact let's pull a French Revolution and change everything.

Happy 4 Fructidor CCXVIII everybody!

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at August 22, 2010 6:50 PM

What really shows the lack of taste of the general movie-going public is that The Movie That Shall Not Be Named opened with a higher gross than Scott Pilgrim did last weekend. It's the Apocalypse, I tells ya!

Posted by: Uriah Creep at August 22, 2010 9:56 PM

My parenting win for the day - My seven-year-old upon seeing a preview for Vampires Suck: That movie looks terrible! But... it's probably not as bad as Twilight. I almost cried it was so awesome.

Posted by: Alex S at August 22, 2010 11:22 PM

Applying the Voldemort Principle here will probably be almost as effective as it was in the HP books. Ignoring a thing will not make it go away, and calling it 'That which must not be said' or somesuch nonsense will simply make it forbidden fruit. I say pointing and laughing at anyone who actually watches that crap is a more effective method. Mockery and disdain. Weapons of choice. If they can take down a hard-on, they can shame a movie goer.
But really, these movies do us all a favor. Automatic DEAL BREAKER for anyone who un-ironically likes to watch the Movie Movie genre. It is like when some dude asks you on the first date just how many drinks he will have to buy you before you will sleep with him. Thanks for saving me a LOT of time, buddy. NEXT!

You mean that doesn't work? I'm stunned.

Posted by: Uriah Creep at August 23, 2010 3:45 AM

Overtime kills keeping up with the Pajibaverse. Reading these comments, I truly thought that the "Unlike another commenter, I shall not name That Which Should Not Be Encouraged" and "Ignoring a thing will not make it go away, and calling it 'That which must not be said' or somesuch nonsense will simply make it forbidden fruit" were references to Pookie. Then I read the earlier articles and got the references. Although, fueled with (more than) a few glasses of wine, I still think they're better applied to Pookie then the Number 2 unnamed movie.

Oh, spambot! Your gender-bending antics are so endearing!

Posted by: Phaeolus at August 23, 2010 8:22 AM

Huh....that's too bad. I saw both Scott Pilgrim and The Expendables yesterday, they were equially full. The Expendables was boring.

Posted by: Nimue at August 23, 2010 8:51 AM

The only reason the film did so well is because of the groundswell of vampire backlash.

When did we pass the point of saturation?

Posted by: Recondite at August 23, 2010 9:38 AM

There was no #2. HAHAHHAHAHA! Sorry, gutter-brain.

I think by preventing "Eat,Pray,Love" from being #2, it's telling them, yeah, you're second, be you suck so bad, we're calling you third, just for spite.

Found your site today through Google. Great site you've got, bookmarked. Do you have a mailing list of some sort?

I could swear I read this same article on some other blog yesterday? I hope you understand the risks in plagiarizing content.

I’ve said it many times before and I’ll say it again – THIS is the kind of thing 3-D is perfect for. 3-D is a GIMMICK, and when employed as such, can be fun. I’d MUCH rather see movies like Jackass, Pirahna, and Step Up in 3-D than see “real” hollywood films in 3-D. In those cases it actually distracts and takes away from the movies’ content.

An entire movie of Watching Julia Roberts pray. I am a fan, but this movie let me down. My favorite Julia Roberts line is..." I would rather have thirty minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special".

only a forewarning, there was clearly an identical document on some different web site I read short while ago, you'll want to investigate it

It is weird that they skipped over the second highest grosser for the week. Did they determine what the second highest ranked movie was, or did they just count wrong, and number three was actually number two?

Posted by: fever blister remedy at January 19, 2011 7:16 PM

Totally agree

You made various good points there. I did a search on the issue and found a good number of folks will consent with your blog.

I feel like you could probably teach a class on how to make a great blog. This is fantastic! I have to say, what really got me was your design. You certainly know how to make your blog more than just a rant about an issue. Youve made it possible for people to connect. Good for you, because not that many people know what theyre doing.
