Natalie Portman Is a Better Actor, But at the Box Office, Her Ass Has Nothing on Odette Yustman's

It was a crummy weekend at the box office, where four new releases vied to surpass last week’s number one film, Hop, and all went down swinging against jelly-bean turds. Russell Brand couldn’t unseat himself, as the Arthur remake could only muster a $12.6 million opening, less than even tempered studio expectations. It also, in a way, dims Russell Brand’s prospects as a future leading man, as he hasn’t demonstrated that he can carry a film yet. I’m not even sure why anyone thought he could. It used to be that Hollywood would wait until an actor landed a big hit before he or she was asked to carry his or her own movie, but now apparently, an actor’s box-office prospects are based on something as ethereal as Twitter buzz. See also: Michael Cera and Alex Pettyfer.

England, you can take Brand back home now. We’re all done with him.

Meanwhile, it was something of a surprise that Hanna managed third place with $12.3 million, meager as that is, considering the woeful marketing (I barely had any idea what Hanna was about before Michael Murray’s review, and it was only after reading it that I sought it out). The movie is playing particularly well to African-American and Hispanic audiences (per Deadline) and, honestly, I couldn’t tell you why. But good for Joe Wright and, especially, Saoirse Ronan, who maybe takes some attention away from the other up-and-comer teenage women, Jennifer Lawrence, Chloe Moretz, and Hailee Steinfeld. Given how thin Ronan is, and her obvious ability to whoop some ass, I wonder why she didn’t get more consideration for The Hunger Games?

The Christian-themed one-arm surfer flick, Soul Surfer, landed in fourth place, again with a relatively small box-office of $11.3 million, but given the small budget, it’s already a profitable movie, thanks in large part to church-bus groups, who showed up in droves to watch a shark gnaw the arm off a teenage girl.

However, the big box-office failure of the weekend was the medieval stoner comedy, Your Highness, which flopped like a dead fish in a brothel. I guess we should’ve seen it coming when the marketing began to focus almost exclusively on Natalie Portman’s ass, but why see the movie when they’re giving away the ass for free in all the adverts? Overall, the film scored a C+ with audiences, and that’s a dreadful Cinemascore, given how bias most moviegoers are toward movies they paid to see. The $9.5 million is $10 million less than what the last movie that exploited its female stars’ ass, The Unborn, opened with, and Odette Yustman didn’t have the benefit of James Franco, which doesn’t appear to be as much a benefit as was once believed. I had a lot of hope for the comedy, but that began to wane as soon as reviews started comparing it unfavorably to Year One, which may have been the worst non-sequel comedy of the last five years.

Elsewhere in the box office, Insidious held up extremely well, dropping only 26 percent; Source Code, Limitless and The Lincoln Lawyer continue to perform modestly, while the bottom fell out of the bottom of Sucker Punch, which put up only $2 million in its third week and doesn’t look likely to break $40 million.

Just a dismal week for new releases. "Hanna" has my interest but not enough to see it over the weekend. As for the rest? Strictly Meh.

Isn't the movie called Your Highness?

Posted by: Matt at April 10, 2011 11:31 PM

I myself wondered why Ronan wasn't mentioned for The Hunger Games. Her coloring is all wrong, according to the book, but when has that ever stopped Hollywood, and her combination of intensity and reserve seems to sum up the Katniss character to me.

Hanna was actually pretty great. Really worth everyone's time.

Posted by: Will at April 11, 2011 12:16 AM

Isn't this movie called Your Hignee? That pic of Portman is, and has always been her best work.

Posted by: idleprimate at April 11, 2011 12:55 AM

Source Code and Hanna may not be doing very well but neither had very good marketing. The fact that all the other crap is doing very bad shows people (at least the target audience of these movies) is somewhat selective.

I might be wrong on this, but I think she's gonna be pretty busy with The Hobbit for a while. I don't even want to start to think what fuckery Peter Jackson is perpetuating with those movies that they require elven maidens and shit, so that's about all I know about it.

Also: Natalie Portman has an ass? I couldn't tell.

"Everyone has a nice butt. *I* have a nice butt."
"Yeah? You should bring it in sometime!"

In short: Girl's beautiful, but she has as much of an ass as Keira Knightley has boobs.

I had no idea about Hanna or that Source Code was from Duncan Jones until a few weeks ago. So poor marketing is hurting them.

As for Your Highness, Danny McBride is another acquired taste that has yet to be proven can bring in the public (just as Brand). Franco's act at the Oscars may have hurt him with wide audiences while I'm trying to remember the last movie before Black Swan that Natalie Portman carried over the finish line.

Good Godtopus, Figs, I know you like your mens all bulked up (excepting of course hedgehog Adam Scott), but this is borderline assist.

I can speak for certain parts of England when I say we'd rather not have Russell Brand back, to be honest.

Yes, to this. That pic is really NOT impressive, in terms of either ass-itude or overall nudity.

I say this as an great and devoted fan of on-screen nudity, but it occurs to me that, for someone who gets naked on screen as often as Natalie Portman does, I do not recall ever actually wanting her to do so.

And Russell Brand is just horrible. His face looks like Frankenstein meets Midnight Cowboy, he looks just...greasy, and is not especially funny or interesting. He can go now.

Hanna managed third place

Soul Surfer, landed in third place

They were both in third place with different box office pulls?

Posted by: KatSings at April 11, 2011 9:25 AM

Oh Natalie, you poor beautiful assless creature. How does she muddle through her day in a world where it is easy to find pants that fit?

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at April 11, 2011 9:44 AM

I LOVED Hanna. It was pretty fantastic and fun and well-done. I am totally getting the soundtrack as soon as it comes out. Love me some Chemical Brothers.

Wait, WHAT?! It's been a long time since I read that book, but I don't remember any female characters AT ALL.

Posted by: Todd at April 11, 2011 10:49 AM

That undeserved Oscar is gonna hang around Portman's neck/career like an anvil.
Advocate for some more pedophiles you Harvard educated pervert.

I do not understand the appeal of Russel Brand. He is what I imagine Pauly Shore would have become if had been born in England.

I was wondering about that myself. Bilbo, Gandalf, twelve dwarves.

No chicks, no elves.

Posted by: Meander at April 11, 2011 10:53 AM

figgy,

I kind of agree with where you're going there. I like a nice ass as much as any guy, which means I'm happy a lot, because many women (yourself no doubt included) have one. Many many women. So "nice ass" is just not that big an achievement.

Posted by: , at April 11, 2011 10:55 AM

Truth be told that ass is probably just 86% hers.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at April 11, 2011 10:59 AM

I saw better ass on drag queens this weekend. Much better.

Posted by: Reba at April 11, 2011 12:08 PM

I do not accept the statement that Natalie Portman is a better actor than Odette Yustman (who, BTW, I believe is not Yustman anymore).

Posted by: CubaGooding at April 11, 2011 12:09 PM

I think I remember mentioning in two different threads my desire for her to play Katniss. She would have been perfect.

Posted by: DominaNefret at April 11, 2011 1:04 PM

You guys don't know about the insanity going on with The Hobbit? Yeah, apparently they've cast a shitload of elves (either for Mirkwood scenes or who knows what the fuck), and even Orlando Bloom's gonna be making an appearance. They're making TWO movies, and apparently the actual events from the books are gonna be like half of it, and who knows what the fuck the rest will be. I've heard that it might be dealing with Dol Goldur and the White Council and, I don't know, maybe an elven orgy. And hot dwarves. That thing's gonna be insane.

NERD OUT!

Posted by: Figgy at April 11, 2011 2:16 PM

Also: come on, Natalie's as flat as a pancake in the ass department. Not that that's bad and I'm sure some guys like that, but, come on.

Posted by: Figgy at April 11, 2011 2:18 PM

Natalie P = Jessica Alba minus the nice ass. Natalie got into Harvard because she was pretty, Jessica gets typecast as an idiot hot girl. THeir acting skills and intelligence levels are the same, the rest is luck.

PFFFFFFFFFT.

With that title, how can you not provide a Yustman ass-shot for comparison?

(Yep. Too lazy to google. The elf-porn thread wore me out.)

Posted by: BierceAmbrose at April 11, 2011 4:46 PM

BarbadoSlim's got this one all stitched up, I have to say.

Possible Flop Culprits: Danny McBride has his television show, which I enjoy but would be scandalized to admit if any the people with whom I share a last name found out I watch, but his films? This, Land of the Lost, Foot Fist Way, All The Real Girls (watch that again, I think you'll find it's...whatever, it's right up this site's alley, just not mine, let it be so), I don't know.

You say Franco's performance at the Oscar's hurt the film's chances, I'll take your word for it, because I didn't end up seeing more than ten minutes of the broadcast, I'll admit. Partly because award shows aren't really my thing and that's fine, and a bit more than partly because of what I saw of Anne Hathaway's demented 'little girl in the big city rabbit' act was so grating, insipid and anodyne I had to step back from my sister's television, for the good the nation. Good fuck, how OLD is she? Old enough to date criminals, but I digress...

But really, I'm thinking that the real explanation is the most obvious one, and if any moviegoers think like me--and I'm sure some of them must, somewhere, I'll always contend this-- they would sooner endure a trans-orbital labotomy performed upon them, unanaesthetized, by a team of Bobo Academy-alumni Birther Conspiracists assisted by a freshly coked-up Rachel Zoe than sit through another book review written by the Harvard Dame of Poorly-Structured Sentences, herself, let ALONE sit through hours of some smug kid winkingly reminding them that this is a just a larf for funsies, something to break the tedium between Genius Grants--like when Gwyneth Paltrow hosts SNL--oh, joy!

This kid is every kind of overexposed, and we need a break. The ass is as tight as could only be expected, but it is not a stately pleasure-dome, I decree. Seems the public will have none of this ass parlour, *scoff*, it falls flat.

I'll probably get body-slammed for this, but in a world where they can award a Nobel Peace Prize based on what someone might do in the potential future, then yes, Russell Brand as a leading man makes enormous sense.

And no, I did not vote for McCain/Palin, just to pre-empt anyone on that.
