Geeks Lose. Again

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Box Office Round-Ups | Comments (72)

If you are a man or a woman, congratulations! You were well represented in this weekend’s box-office numbers. If you are a geek, perhaps you can take solace in the fact that you’re also a man or a woman, cause I got nothing for you, except a paltry $10.5 million opening for Scott Pilgrim and a 5th place finish. That’s a little more than half of what Kick-Ass opened with in April, and we thought that was a disaster (Pilgrim, I believe, had twice the budget of Kick-Ass, to boot.)

Was it Michael Cera? Was it the super niche? Was it the marketing oversaturation backlash? Was it the subject material? I doubt very much it was the quality of the film: The very least you could say was that it was better than both The Expendables and Eat, Pray, Love. I saw it. My opinion mostly mirrors that of Dan, save for one other factor: As someone who doesn’t play video games or read comic-books, I felt like the lamest guy in the world during the screening. Fortunately, there were only seven other people in attendance to quietly judge me. Also, I don’t understand why we’re celebrating the lack of irony. I like irony, damnit.

All the same: I’m bummed for Edgar Wright. Not because I loved the movie — I’m really not the target demographic and I have no idea the Sex Bob-Omb reference is to — but because Scott Pilgrim was original, inventive, creative, and energetic. And movies like that should be rewarded at the box office. I’d probably feel a little worse, however, if not for the fact that a movie like The Kids Are All Right has only made $16 million after six weeks. Mainstream America doesn’t like good movies. Welcome to the club, geeks. Now, please stop making me feel like a loser. Just because I didn’t read comic books in high school doesn’t mean that I didn’t get beat up, too. We may not be on the same team, but we have common enemies. Namely: Idiots.

Upside: After the lackluster performances of Nick & Norah, Youth in Revolt and now Scott Pilgrim, plus the disaster that was Year One, Michael Cera has certainly run out of chances. With nothing confirmed in the works, that’s probably the last we’ll see of Cera, except as an occasional best-friend character, until he shows up in a bad sitcom 20 years from now. Welcome to Jon Cryer’s life, Michael Cera.

I think everyone who saw Scott Pilgrim can agree it would’ve been even better if it was Wallace Wells vs. the World.

Meanwhile, The Expendables put up $35 million to win the box office because that’s still the kind of film that wins weekends: Mediocre action movies with recognizable faces. Eat, Pray, Love came in second place with a very solid $24 million. And in the gender wars, men win again, but maybe a few of those men came back from The Expendables to find that their wives had left them after seeing Eat, Pray, Love. Think of it: All of that grief could’ve been prevented if only you’d gone to see Scott Pilgrim together. Or even better: The Kids Are All Right.

The Other Guys and Inception kept kicking along, too, scoring $18 million and $11 million, respectively.

Here’s a poll. Because I’m curious.

I know what happened. The theaters near me were all only running Scott Pilgrim in one screening room. It was long and different, so the theaters weren't willing to risk actually wasting their screens on it. Eat, Pray, Love was getting 3-5 screens; same with The Expendables. Even Step Up 3-D had multiple screens still.

It's hard to just pop into a film that long in this genre when you have to wait three hours for your next chance to see it. You just leave the movies or go see something else. I mean, I got held up late at work and almost had to hold off on seeing it until tomorrow because I wasn't going to the mall for a 7:30 screening of anything on a Friday night.

That poll needs an "I'm broke and therefore waiting for it to hit Netflix" option.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at August 15, 2010 6:17 PM

What if you are a tomboy and a geek? I had to see all 3 movies this weekend.

Posted by: ceejeemcbeegee at August 15, 2010 6:20 PM

a bit of option 2, but mostly because I hadn't seen Inception yet and chose to see that instead. And didn't regret it

Posted by: Squirrelgripper at August 15, 2010 6:21 PM

Well guess I lost the contest

Posted by: The_wakeful at August 15, 2010 6:26 PM

That poll needs an "I loathe comic book / superhero films that feature wimpy teens as main characters, mainly because they never have any gadgets to speak of" option.

Posted by: SB at August 15, 2010 6:44 PM

I liked Scott Pilgrim a lot. I saw that and The Other Guys this weekend and I gotta say that I liked Pilgrim better. Though the nerds in the audience I was in had already seen it once before this weekend and couldn't stop raving about it, which kinda sucked.

Posted by: aroorda at August 15, 2010 6:44 PM

What if you just hate people in general and would rather die than have to socialize with them? I don't go to the movies

Posted by: Porkchop Express at August 15, 2010 6:47 PM

I don't know why anyone would be the least bit surprised.

Posted by: figgy at August 15, 2010 6:49 PM

Though for me it was a)Michael Cera, b) theaters are too expensive, c) anti-social streak that will keep me away from theaters, specially on opening weekends.

And it just had zero cross-over appeal, unlike say, The Expendables, which is marketed towards men but you KNOW that plenty of women and geeks went to watch that. Who (in the general, dumb public) would watch Scott Pilgrim other than fans of the comic book and a handful of other people?

Posted by: figgy at August 15, 2010 6:54 PM

Well, I really can't stand Michael Cera and I really don't understand his appeal. So, no, I'm not going to see this thing even via Netflix. I'm just hoping he'll go away because he just makes my skin crawl.

The three movies came in the order I thought they would so I'm not surprised. "Expendables" made more money than I thought it would but all those action stars still fell short of what Angelina Jolie's "Salt" earned on opening day, so, there's that. Angie beats the old guys.

As for Julia . . . I can't believe $23M is her biggest opening in 10 years. I mean, I thought she was still a star. Guess I haven't been paying attention to those bombs she's been making. So, good for her.

Oh, I saw "Salt" this weekend. Guess I'm a bit behind everybody.

i live in France so ....

Posted by: caro at August 15, 2010 7:15 PM

I didn't go for some of the reasons mentioned by other commenters: no money, low tolerance for theatre-related human dickery. Also because it's a billion degrees out in Vancouver right now and so I didn't even want to go outside this morning when I thought my apartment was on fire.

Speaking more generally, though, I blame the TV spots. If I hadn't read about Scott Pilgrim all over the internet, I'd think it was just some ho-hum Michael Cera film where he punches a guy while a song plays. I've seen nothing at all to suggest the plot or the film's stylistic quirks or whatnot.

Posted by: Melodie at August 15, 2010 7:20 PM

Now can Julia Roberts go back to Taos and never be seen or heard from again? Her paycheck is so unjustified.

Also, I hate Michael Cera outside of Arrested Development, but he's just the reason I didn't see the movie right away so I'll see it later. As of now Restrepo & Winter's Bone take priority.

Posted by: Snrub at August 15, 2010 7:23 PM

I saw Scott Pilgrim and The Expendables this weekend. Scott Pilgrim was incredible, expendables was mildly entertaining but pretty forgettable. I plan on seeing Scott Pilgrim at least one more time in theaters, then buying it on blu-ray.

Posted by: greer at August 15, 2010 7:31 PM

I'll have to agree with one of figgy's comments about crossover. I know that Aunt JR is really excited about seeiong "The Expendables" (probably for the governator).

And I also agree with her first point. Michael Cera has worn thin. His character doesn't appeal to me and he's pretty much a one trick pony.

Next flavor of the week, please.

Posted by: UncleJR at August 15, 2010 7:32 PM

I say lets wait till next week. Maybe there were too many choices.

Posted by: John W at August 15, 2010 8:00 PM

While Scott Pilgrim may get a boost from word of mouth, personally I'm just sick of Michael Cera and he *really* isn't playing anything different here. At least not different enough to argue about.

Hollywood casting mystifies me. MC is a known quantity and along with that comes the knowledge that his shtick is wearing perilously thin. So yeah let's cast Mr. Dynamic in a geeky comic action film/love story where the previews show him looking and acting exactly the same as his previous efforts.

Edgar Wright has the chops, but WTF were they thinking with Cera?

Posted by: Barry at August 15, 2010 8:19 PM

Our movie theaters around here blow chunks. There is really no other way to say it. When I saw Inception in the theater the volume was about half what I watched Kick Ass at in my living room last night. I doubt I'll see another movie in the theater until Harry Potter. Quite honestly my home theater just kicks the shit out of the garbage theaters in this city. Which has a population of about 100,000 and is a Big 10 college town so it's even more baffling why our theaters suck.

Point is a colorful, vibrant, and loud movie like Scott Pilgrim is going to be much better on Blu Ray in the comfort of my house. Sorry it didn't do well. Maybe studios should start auditing theaters to bring them up to snuff.

Also, The Kids Are Alright is still in limited release so 16M is pretty damn impressive. Yet another one for the Netflix.

Posted by: TylerDFC at August 15, 2010 8:20 PM

Scott Pilgrim was the best movie I have seen in the theaters in I'm not sure how long. I walked out of the cinema and immediately wanted to see it again (last screening of the night, unfortunately). For once my friends agreed with me.

Also Pilgrim is so not a Cera character, he's the epitome of cool.

Posted by: Chugga at August 15, 2010 8:22 PM

That was a pretty great write-up, Dustin.

It's a shame Pilgrim didn't do better, I want to see offbeat, unique movies succeed as well.

There was more vibrance and imagination on display in single scenes than during the entirety of The Expendables.

Too bad not every "different" movie could succeed ala District 9. Hopefully we won't be stuck with fewer studios taking chances, and we wind up with more remakes and Squeakquels.

Posted by: Brosef Stalin at August 15, 2010 8:24 PM

@John W: Except that next week you're getting Piranha 3D, The Switch, Lottery Ticket and Nanny McPhee Returns. And the following weekend, it's Takers, The Last Exorcism, Centurion and the re-release of Avatar. There's a quick deluge of movies before August ends as movies try to claim the last few bucks of Summer 2010.

So it's unlikely that any of these movies will retain many of the screens they had this weekend.

TBF, I should be patting myself on the back since it broke down like I thought it would -- although none of the movies made as much as I expected.

Of the 3 of this weekend, it's more than likely that Eat Pray Love will have the longest legs as besides The Switch, there isn't another women-centric movie for miles.

As for Scott Pilgrim and Cera, I wouldn't be as quick to pin it on him. This is just the latest case of the Internet geekbase thinking that, just because they're whole hog behind a project, it will triumph -- like Kick-Ass, Watchmen and Grindhouse.

Posted by: Fredo at August 15, 2010 8:26 PM

Why did "Scott Pilgrim" bomb this weekend???

A Michael Cera vehicle with a budget between $80 and $90 million.

That's about as logical as a pricey Bronson Pinchot vehicle four years after 'Perfect Strangers' was canceled.

wait ... why do people hate Michael Cera?

I'm probably not going to watch Scott Pilgrim because I'm tired of films based on comic books, but I really have no objections to the cast or the story at all ... is there something I missed? does he kill puppies on his free time? or did he go on a Mel Gibson-type rant?

any pajibans from ottawa, the mayfair is playing a truly obscure canadian classic on wednesday, 7pm showing. Its called Crimewave, by John Paisz, from 1985. a surreal comedy drama about a floundering mystery writer. its a great film that was forgotten about five minutes after it was made. this is a once in a lifetime chance to see it. it was never released on vhs or dvd and you cant torrent it.

sorry to hijack the site for a plug. had to be done.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's why I waited until this weekend to see "Salt." I went to the 2:30 showing and there were only three other people there; one sat way down from me and the other two were way up top. It was great. Maybe you should try waiting until the fourth week. But, that is good only for a hit because movies like "Pilgrim" will be at the $3 theatres by week three!!!

Posted by: mslewis at August 15, 2010 9:08 PM

too bad scott pilgrim didn't do better; i went to see it and enjoyed it but understand why others might not be interested. having said that, if we want different kinds of movies, then we have to support them when they come out; i hope the final weekend total will be better and that word of mouth gets folks to the theater in greater numbers; we'll have to wait and see

Posted by: splinter at August 15, 2010 9:19 PM

Chugga:

Cera may be playing against type, but I'll be damned if you could tell that from the previews. And like I said, enough people are tired of the "Michael Cera" character that they'll gladly pass this over based on those same trailers. Deservedly or not.

Casting has consequences, as does poor marketing.

Amendment: I'm not as burned out as some on Cera's schtick, but thats probably because I have ignored most of his films up to now. He was perfect for AD but never came across as an actor with range, so his career trajectory was fairly predictable. Kudos to him for milking his persona for all it's worth I guess. Next.

It will be interesting to see the longevity of the Expendables vs Pilgrim; the former seems like a nostalgia trip that will burn through it's audience pretty quick, while the latter may get by on repeat business and word of mouth. Edgar Wright hasn't failed me yet and is the main reason I want to see Pilgrim, so here's hoping.

Posted by: Squirrelgripper at August 15, 2010 9:52 PM

Sex Bob-Omb is a pretty main-stream reference for videogames. If you've played or witnessed a mario game, you've probably seen a bob-omb.

I don't read Scott Pilgrim but I know what a Bob-omb is.

Bob-ombs a near entry level enemy in every Mario game ever made from the first Mario, to Paper Mario to Mario Galaxy. Heck they even appeared in off-shoot off-nintendo brand games like Mario Teaches Typing.

Its a bomb with feet. As for the sex part, thats probably a comic thing.

That's all.

I saw "Pilgrim" over the weekend with my husband and our faces were like :D for the entire movie, and like others mentioned we wanted to immediately watch it again. I hope it'll be one of those movies that start out slow but gain momentum from word of mouth.

Posted by: Dingles at August 15, 2010 10:22 PM

And at the turn, it's Neo ahead of Brian by a nose, with LBees and DarthCorleone and Blair coming up on the outside! But what's this? Julia Roberts is shooting at the racers! What a display of poor sportsmanship! And we are being told that LBees may be disqualified for overuse of a "poop" joke while Neo had his picks in the wrong order in clear violation of the contest rules. Ladies and gentlemen, this is truly a dark day for movie racing!

Bizarre. The theater I saw Scott Pilgrim in was sold out. Two screenings. Sold out. Granted, I was in Austin. At an Alamo Drafthouse...

Maybe with nothing on the horizon, Cera will finally agree to do the fabled Arrested Development movie?

Posted by: RobP at August 15, 2010 11:51 PM

I was thinking real hard of something clever to write about Mr. Cera. Then I realized the best way I can "honor" Michael Cera would be to put same the amount of effort into my critique as he puts into his acting. So here you go:

Michael Cera sucks

Done.

Posted by: SackLodge at August 16, 2010 12:32 AM

Really, it has nothing to do with Scott Pilgrim's quality. It has everything to do with a problem people really don't think about a lot but studios go batshit crazy over: the strategizing that is release dates. Fifth place is pretty depressing, but consider what titans Scott Pilgrim was up against (besides seven evil exes): a movie version of a book (with Julia Roberts who is seasoned box office gold) that is the Twilight of upper middle class white women....AND a film that has an all-star cast (Willis, Stallone, Rourke, Statham, etc.) that is basically a porn where the sex is blowing shit up and you're promised every action star you could ever think of (except maybe Van Damme & Steven Segal, who were on vacation being pussies). Also, we're dealing with the Late Crowd Effect of Inception. What does that mean? That means people who didn't know about it (like your grandma) and now do are coming to see it - and don't underestimate the Late Crowd Effect's numbers! So, ultimately, it all comes down to planning, and this weekend sucked to be Scott Pilgrim.

Posted by: maxpurr9 at August 16, 2010 2:54 AM

I'll see it when it's out here. Not sure when that is, but I expect it to do better. Not sure what it'll be up against but I don't think our box office works quite the same as yours anyway. It's not as much of a competition. Or it is and I'm totally unaware. That's not unusual.

Posted by: Carrie at August 16, 2010 4:12 AM

Posted by: Carrie at August 16, 2010 4:13 AM

idleprimate,
You mean Crime Wave rather than Crimewave.

Scott Pilgrim has yet to be released in my city. As a matter of fact, The Expendables and Eat, Pray, Love haven't been released here either. I'm just glad they managed to keep Inception for four weeks.

I'll would see Scott Pilgrim if I had the option, but not on its opening weekend. I'm not really big on crowds.

Posted by: Uda at August 16, 2010 4:28 AM

ThingOfThings, not everyone played/plays video games, so the Bob-omb reference is going to be obscure for more than a few people.

As for the "Sex" Bob-omb thing, I'm pretty sure that this is a reference to the song "Sex Bomb" by Flipper. Seeing as Scott Pilgrim is an alt-rock musician, that reference seems apropos.

Posted by: spoobnooble at August 16, 2010 6:57 AM

Er, I meant to say: I would see Scott Pilgrim.
Not sure how the 'I'll' got in there.
Clearly, I've been learning English from the spambots.

Posted by: Uda at August 16, 2010 7:26 AM

Well, there's the Michael Cera thing, that's definitely part of it. But I've never played video games...blame it on my age and near-complete lack of hand/eye coordination. So we have a movie based on a comic book, that I didn't read, with lots of sly references to video games, that I never played, and a star that isn't a draw in any way? Yeah, that's a pretty good reason to save my $11 and stay home.

I doubt I'll be paying retail for a movie any time soon. My daughter is going to see it on Friday with her comic-book-geek buddy, and paying for her ticket will be my contribution to Edgar Wright's retirement fund.

Posted by: Wednesday at August 16, 2010 9:32 AM

No option for "Fuck comic book movies in the eye socket," sooooo ... I went to see "The Wild Wonderful Whites of West Virginia" instead.

Jesco is STILL the ... um, bob-omb, I guess.

Posted by: , at August 16, 2010 9:37 AM

I'm with Wednesday. There was just nothing there for me and they're going to have to go a looooong way to get me to pay $10 to see Cera do anything. And then there's that "bi-furious" line. If that was the kind of dialogue they thought was so great that it had to be showcased in the commercials, if that was the apex of what they were trying to do, then, no. No, no, no.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at August 16, 2010 9:58 AM

In all honesty, I didn't go this weekend because I thought it would be filled to capacity with the comic book fangirls and boys. I hate going to the movies on crowded teenage opening weekends. However given the paltry take, clearly I could have gone and not worried about 250 17 year olds texting and talking and walking on my lawn.

Now I won't be seeing it for a while, because I'm seeing Inception this week, followed by The Switch on the weekend (aka the new Jason Bateman - I'm hoping his presenence has a positive effect on Aniston's standard rom-com disasters). And to anyone who still hasn't seen The Kids Are Alright (most of you) - go! It's so good.

Posted by: Nicole at August 16, 2010 10:11 AM

What does this say about the influence of Comic Con?

This movie had all the buzz at the CC and everyone was expecting it to be a big hit and instead it bombs or should I say Bob-ombs.

Posted by: John W at August 16, 2010 10:18 AM

My kid wants to see it and she'd be crushed if I went without her.

Posted by: admin at August 16, 2010 10:19 AM

Um, sorry everyone, but there is another possible explanation for Scott Pilgrim not doing well. I saw it this weekend and was filled with resounding boredom and annoyance. Sure, there were a few cute/funny lines, but not enough to overcome the terrible, terrible one-liners (bi-furious anyone?), Michael Cera's true lack of appeal and the strangely passive assholishness of his character. Despite the creativity in execution, the storyline itself was pretty thin, predictable and telegraphed.

Posted by: Melanie Lyon at August 16, 2010 10:20 AM

Telegraphed like how Mario rescuing Princess Toadstool, or Link saving Zelda, was telegraphed?

Posted by: RobP at August 16, 2010 10:32 AM

Scott Pilgrim would have probably really appealed to me about two years ago. I don't know exactly what's happened to me since then, but ever time I see the trailers, I'm filled with so much apathy that I don't even care enough to change the channel. I'm not angry about it (I don't hate Cera yet), but I can think of twenty other things I'd rather spend my ten bucks on.

I think it might be the fact that I'm tiring of the whole, "We're So Geeky That We Come Back Around To Being Cool" genre. It's time is just about over. I need something else to subsist on rather than that 'ironic cool' shit.

Posted by: Kaleena at August 16, 2010 10:58 AM

There's a certain hysterical pretentiousness in lumping all movies based on comic books together. There's a world of difference between say, Superman and Maus, and neither Scott Pilgrim nor something like 100 bullets even fits on the continuum between those two. There's probably more variance in theme, plot, and genre particulars between those 4 items than there is between 99% of indie films produced in the last 30 years.

"Comic book movie" is a ridiculously broad brush. It's like saying "movie based on a novel." And we all know that Jurassic Park and Pride and Prejudice are functionally identical and should be treated as such.

Posted by: ZombieScientist at August 16, 2010 11:47 AM

I chose to see "The Kids Are All Right" this weekend. The thing I came away with after viewing it was that nontraditional families can be just as boring as traditional ones. The performances were good, but the material was lame. Great movie? I don't think so.

Posted by: jimbob at August 16, 2010 11:54 AM

I went to see Scott Pilgrim this weekend, but only because it's sent in Toronto and I was guilted into it by hometown pride. It was cute, I would have loved it when I was 16, now.... don't really care for Micheal Cera types. I highly suggest it for rental.

Posted by: Mika at August 16, 2010 12:12 PM

It was a packed weekend, so I had to miss it. I do plan to catch it at the theater within the next week or so. Perhaps I can help prevent the usual second-weekend box office plunge.

Posted by: TarHeel at August 16, 2010 3:33 PM

I honestly didn't expect as many people to say "I'm unemployed and have social anxiety disorder" as have said that but it's seriously half the comments thread.

The theater I was at was less full than the Inception screening next to it, which is a bummer. It was one of the most fun, original movies I've seen in years.

I've heard people making a fairly apt comparison though, which is Fight Club. Fight Club did shit for business in theaters, but once it hit DVD everyone in the world has seen it 100 times. I think this movie is going to have huge legs on DVD.

Posted by: Jason Harris at August 16, 2010 4:33 PM

I swear that I am just still mad at Michael Cera for refusing to do the Arrested Development movie. Michael is a good co-star, but he cannot carry a film. He was good in Juno, great in Superbad, but he needs a strong sidekick with him. As for Eat Pray Love....that is insulting to women. Almost as gross as It's Complicated. Not many women can relate to that nonsense. Although I guess some can because it is selling tickets....yuck!
