100 Books in One Year: Silent Bob Speaks by Kevin Smith

I’m a Kevin Smith fan. I know the guy has his detractors but I’ve liked everything he’s done, even Jersey Girl. I’ve seen his DVDs An Evening With Kevin Smith and the follow-up Evening Harder, and the guy knows how to tell an anecdote. That’s for damn sure.

Those anecdotes are where Silent Bob Speaks really shines. The book is a collection of columns Keven Smith wrote for Arena Magazine, Details, New Jersey Monthly, and Film Comments. They range from amusing to hilarious. Unsurprisingly, the really funny stuff is when Kevin is dishing on his experiences with various actors and actresses. Of particular note is his animosity toward “Greasy Reese Witherspoon” and his plan for revenge is so moronic and juvenile it is near brilliant.

As a writer, Kevin is no-holds-barred with his opinions. He writes how he speaks, which makes for an incredibly easy read. At times he loses his unique voice, especially the chapters in which he interviews Ben Affleck and Tom Cruise. It’s pretty funny when he writes about his unabashed love for Affleck and how Cruise completely brings him under his spell.

What it does not go into is the apparent curse that Kevin brings to his interviewees. It wasn’t long after these pieces were published that Affleck had a run of failed movies and, well, we all know what happened to Cruise’s stature.

Aside from the behind-the-scenes dirt he also offers a few personal pieces about such diverse subjects as his experiences with fat-buster drug Xenical, and his wife posing nude for a painting. He ends the book with an unpublished essay on the San Diego Comic-Con. It’s hilarious and brings new meaning to the phrase “tongue in cheek.”

Silent Bob Speaks is a fun book for the fans, a fast read, and includes some hilarious bits, mostly at Kevin’s expense. His self-deprecation is on full display and it would almost be grating if it also didn’t come off as completely honest. If anything, I have more respect for the man now than I already did. He knows the kind of filmmaker he is, and he is happy to keep making the movies he wants to make. They cost little and he has enormous freedom to keep doing what he wants to do. Not a bad gig.

Great piece Tyler, also I didn't know Smith put out a DVD called an "Evening with Kevin Smith." Now comes word that he's written a book about past columns he's written, this guy is a world class marketer. I was shocked to discover that Mr. Smith wrote and directed "Jersey Girl," but what was even more shocking was that Smith was denied an Oscar for this epic. The apex of his career no doubt.

Wow, Pookie. Thanks for the not at all sarcastic accolades. If I had known this was going to be posted here I probably would have spent more than 5 minutes writing it. Live and learn.

Lowest number of comments for a review ever? Fingers crossed for the record.

Aw, come now, Tyler. There's no easier way to be included among the Cannonball Reader entries than to review a Kevin Smith book. -- DR

Sad

I would hope you would think more of your work Tyler, and you and I both know it took you more than 5 minutes to write this article.

I love the Reese Witherspoon story, if only because I always suspected that she was kind of a bitch. I also love when Hollywood insiders tell tales out of school, a la Kathy Griffin. Usually, all you can get on celebs is commentary on how "generous" they are on the set (God, I hate that word in that context).

I've been meaning to read this book, but something else always comes up. Still, a book of recycled Kevin Smith is always better than say a Pamela Anderson novel. At least you can say you bought the Smith book to actually read it and people would believe you. Thanks for the reminder, Tyler.

I bought this book for my brother last Christmas and keep meaning to steal it, now I'm more excited to read it.

My find of the year was stumbling on the DVD of "Jay and Silent Bob Do DeGrassi" at Five Below. Kevin Smith as a totally unabashed fanboy. Can't say I blame him as it gave him the opportunity to go all fanboy with Stacie Mistysyn.

I too am a huge Kevin Smith. He has actually released another Q&A session recently titled A Threevening with Kevin Smith. It features some great stories like encounters with Sidney Poitier and Bruce Willis. I have yet to read this book but I do have is book "My Boring Ass Life". Except for the story about Jason Mewes' drug addiction and many rehab attempts, it is not that interesting.

The whole Reese Witherspoon thing doesn't surprise me either, she looks as tenacious as a bull dog and probably an S&M dominatrix in the bedroom (poor, poor Jakey-Poo)...Kevin Smith's anecdotes are 10 times better than most of his movies. I've watched him speak at Comic-Con via youtube and I enjoyed every second of it. Man knows how to tell a story and he is himself. Which is refreshing for a change.

I met my husband on Kevin Smith's message board so whatever he does is fine by me. This book was a super entertaining read because I had just joined his message board when I go it and it helped me understand a lot of inside jokes and whatnot. Plus the man is a hell of a raconteur.
